COUNCIL SWITCHES TO SOLAR West Arnhem Regional Council (WARC) is doing their bit to reduce their impact on the environment with a solar energy system now installed at the Jabiru Headquarters office. As part of the management strategic planning, West Arnhem Regional Council has identified that Grant and Funding will become increasingly harder and the Management Team have looked at ways of reducing operational expenditure that will impact on Council in future years. West Arnhem Regional Council Regional Manager Service Delivery Gordon Smith said electricity is a significant expense to council for every day operations and it is certain that these expenses will increase overtime. “One strategy to reduce this ongoing expense and to reduce impacts on the environment was to look at solar power for council buildings environment,” he said. Jabiru Main Office was identified as a perfect trial to see if the saving would be beneficial over the long term, with council expressing an installation of a data logger on multiple meters to the office to work out how much energy is used on what days and times. West Arnhem Regional Council Senior Project Manager Claire Smerdon said council is already seeing the benefits. “The system does tell you how much energy has used, which after The solar energy system now been installed at West Arnhem Regional approximately one month was over 6,000kw hours and $1,900 Council’s office in Jabiru. saved.” interest in renewable energy “This information confirms and its advantages in January the ‘cash flow analysis’ 2015. included in the proposal Council has since conducted which stated that council a feasibility study, sourced could potentially save over quotes from installers and $22,000 per annum.” sought support from local While council is waiting to stakeholders including receive the first electricity bill Kakadu National Park and stating the potential savings, the Jabiru Town Development it hoped that solar energy Authority. systems will be rolled out Council approved a budget throughout all council offices for $76,500 at an Ordinary in the future. The community storm water system is also set to be improved with further works required over the coming years. (My radio code) From the Diaries of Flemming Jensen 1968-1969 In the previous episode, Flemming successfully brings down a buffalo and Allan’s return is delayed due to the weather.. Sunday, 8th February In the past I often wondered what tropical rain really was. I certainly figured it out lately. It has rained heavily all day. No-one could under any circumstances land any airplane today. Time these days can feel long but I try the best as I can to kill the time. This afternoon I made pancakes and have taken into consideration that it is the first time I’ve done it, they tasted pretty good. Unfortunately we now have no more eggs! After listening to the radio to hear whether there were any messages from Darwin I went to have the daily bath at the edge of the billabong and on my way I met Laura, one of the old aboriginals. “No one could under any circumstances land any plane today” She came with a big knuckle from a wild boar that their dogs had brought down. I thanked her very much. It was touching that they thought of me. They did not know that I had the whole refrigerator filled with meat but now I also have pork for a change. Monday, 9th February The morning was spent cutting up and freezing the pork from yesterday. The meat had been hanging to cool all night. Towards the afternoon I wanted to concrete the last toilet floor and that was what I did. It was just finished as it began to rain and I do hope that the rain does not weaken the surface. Fortunately has been no trouble with the water pump at the time and it starts in both the dry weather and when the rain is falling. Old Jack came down to get something for his eyes but I could not help him because I do not know what Pat used to give him. Charlie is known for his big smile and helping children and the community, where no task was too big or small, including walking foot patrols and vehicle patrol in dark areas to ensure the community is safe. Night Patrol Coordinator Greg Sheldon said Charlie is a pillar of strength and a role model to many staff and the community. “He has sacrificed his time, patience, endurance, professionalism and cultural leader experiences with many,” Greg said. “We haven’t got enough words to say ‘thanks’ for all the sacrifices and hard, dedicated work that he has done.” Community Services Manager Natalie Bellew, Community Services Manager in Minjilang Candice Siedler-Twine and Greg said Charlie will be missed by all. “We say ‘thank you’ to his family in the community for sharing him with the Night Patrol team in Minjilang. A team of veterinarians and veterinarian students have visited Warruwi, Gunbalanya and Minjilang to provide the beneficial dog health program called West Arnhem Land Dog Health Program (WALDHeP) recently. This is the twelfth visit that the team of veterinarians and students from the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Melbourne have visited Gunbalanya and associated outstations, and the second visit to Minjilang and Warruwi. Led by Associate Dean at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor Liz Tudor, the WALDHeP program involves surgical desexing of dogs and cats, as well as treatment for internal and skin parasites. Throughout two weeks, the team visited Gunbalanya, Minjilang, Warruwi, Manmoyi, Gumeringbang and Mamadewerre and performed more than 150 surgical procedures and treated hundreds of animals with worming medication. Dr Tudor said nearly half of the procedures were dog speys. “We are very grateful for the welcome and support given to us in communities, and for the opportunity to work with dog owners over time, and to help them maintain the health and well being of their dogs,” Dr Tudor said. Fellow Veterinarian Cam Raw said 43 of the desexing procedures were performed on Warruwi community’s animals. “These animals also received tick and worming medications following their surgery, and an estimated 70 other dogs were treated with worming medication after consulting with their owners,” he said. “The community was so welcoming and receptive to the services we provided and we are so grateful to them for our wonderful experience.” West Arnhem Regional Council Community Services Manager at Warruwi Kupa Teao said ongoing vet work through the program within remote communities is vital. “This work assists us to manage the dog population in the community and address their health as well, so the benefit for the community is significant,” he said. In West Arnhem, I have been speaking with people about housing, employment for local people and the health and wellbeing of our families. As someone who has lived on an outstation in the Tiwi Islands with my wife and at times, my many grandchildren, I continue to advocate for better housing services whilst maintaining our cultural connections to country. I have been focusing on how infrastructure, roads and housing will continue to involve local people and local jobs. The recent release of my government’s $2 billion Remote Housing program will provide new housing, substantial upgrades and jobs in housing. I am looking forward to heading over to Minjilang and Warruwi and talking to people about opportunities for their communities and kids. It will be great to share some of the excellent examples that are happening in my own community of Tiwi Islands and how economic development can and should occur on Aboriginal land.Of course, we all know that to the health and education of our communities are critical in improving the life of our communities. Recently in Malabam, I heard first-hand of the good work of Malabam Health in supporting the wellbeing of our young people. I was pleased to support the work of Malabam Health, presenting them with an Aboriginal flag for their office (pictured below). As an ex teacher & youth worker, I really want to create opportunities that give our kids a better chance in life. Helping my local schools find funds for important infrastructure projects to support kids learning has been a highlight this month. Jabiru Area School will use these funds for an outdoor learning space and Gunbalanya School kids will no doubt think that there HUGE fan is very ‘cool’. I encourage people to contact me over the coming weeks on 0429 919 539 and share and like my Facebook page/Francis4Arafura. Not only was it the first time in history that a team from Kakadu has participated in the championship, but the Kakadu squad also took out second place in the 10 kilometre relay event and fourth place overall. Team Manager Trish Miller and project squad member Emma Cameron congratulated team members Emily Pettersson, Caylis Perik, Jaxen Mitchell and Aaiden Huxquin for their efforts in both the relay event and their individual races.
