ECU INSIGHTS JULY 2013 ECU Members and the Community Support West ISD After the tragedy on April 17th in West, Educators Credit Union, like many others, wanted to offer help. “Due to our long history with the education community, we focused on West ISD in particular. Many schools sustained significant damage, so we set out to offer help by opening up a benefit account for the school district”, stated Joe Hutyra, Educators CEO. Over the course of two months, money was dropped in jars in all ECU lobbies, donations were mailed in and deposits were made in branches. Thanks to the help of many members, the local community and individuals/ groups near and far a monetary donation in the amount of $9,500.00 was made to West ISD. “I, along with our Board of Directors, would like to personally thank our members for their contributions in support of West ISD”, said Joe Hutyra. An additional contribution of $7,500.00 was made to support West ISD from Educators Credit Union. These checks were presented to Dr. Marty Crawford, West ISD Superintendent, on June 13, 2013. This year ensure your dream trip does not become a financial nightmare by taking the following five steps: 1) Bring your own food and snacks. Whether traveling for a week long or day trip, bring your own food and snacks. Food and beverage prices are typically higher in “touristy” areas, so save your money by bringing bottled water and sodas, and packing snacks and lunches. 2) Have a budget when on-site. Many people budget for the travel and hotel costs of their vacations, but forget to consider meals and activities when on-site. Think carefully about what activities your family might want to experience – water skiing or zip lining – and what meals you’ll want to enjoy out, and budget appropriately before you leave. 3) Look for local excitement. Summer is the season for local festivals and activities throughout Texas, and most are free. See what’s happening in your local area by visiting http://www.traveltex.com/. A plethora of kid-friendly and kid-free events await. 4) Leave unnecessary financial instruments at home. Before going on vacation, look through your wallet and purse and remove any financial instruments that you won’t need, and leave them at home. Why bring your checkbook or other less-used payment methods on vacation and risk them being lost or stolen? Only bring the forms of payment that you plan on using, plus a back-up. 5) Make use of gas perk programs. Traveling by car is pretty much inevitable, whether enjoying an out-of-town getaway or stay-cation this summer. Many retailers, such as grocery stores and gas stations, offer gas discounts that can amount to significant savings, especially if you plan ahead and amass the rewards over the months leading up to your vacation. No matter where you go this summer, the tips above should help! And remember, Educators Credit Union can help with a low rate vacation loan should you need help covering vacation costs. UPCOMING EVENTS Wednesday, July 3 Member Appreciation Day at the Main Office from 11:00 - 3:00. Free Hot Dogs and Sodas. Employees will also be hosting a Bake Sale to benefit Relay for Life. Buy something sweet for your July 4th party. Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3 Storybook Christmas will be set up in the Main Office lobby selling books. All proceeds go to Storybook Christmas to buy books for underprivileged children, pre-K through 5th, in McLennan County. Need a New Car?
