Quigley Cripple - Fresno Fly Fishers
QUIGLEY CRIPPLE By Jerry Hopewell This fly was tied by Bob Quigley! We will tie the fly using his style. For different types of Mayflies, the tying technique remains the same, only the colors of material changes. Fish the fly as you would fish a dry fly. Hook: Mustad C49S sized to match the emerging insect. I am using a 16 hook. Thread: White Gudebrod 8/0 or 10/0 to match the hook size. Tail: Z-Lon light tan very sparse. Body: Insect green Marabou fibers. Rib: Small Copper Wire. Thorax: Fine dry fly dubbing. Hackle: Barred Ginger or Dun dry fly hackle. Wing: Fine Deer Hair. The material used to tie the fly. Start the tying thread at the half way point of the hook shank. Tie in the Z-lon material on top of the hook shank. Tie in the Copper Wire rib material. I tie on the bottom of the shank. Tie in the tips of three or so Marabou fibers to the top of the hook shank. Wrap the Marabou fibers anti clockwise, secure with the tying thread and trim the excess. Wrap the Copper Wire rib clockwise, secure with the tying thread and trim the excess. Dub your tying thread with the Super Fine Dubbing and make a ball size lump. This supports the rear part of the wing. Finish making the dubbing ball. Select your Deer hair, clean the under fur, stack the Deer hair fibers and tie the hair on the top of the hook shank with the tips pointing forward. Post the front wing slightly. Select the proper size of dry fly hackle and secure the stem to the area between the forward wing and the rear wing. Force the stem up the forward wing. Secure and trim the excess. Wrap three turns of hackle, secure with the tying thread and trim the excess. Now you have the finished fly. This one tied by Jerry Hopewell!
