Site Le Corbusier :
unique in Europe
To keep in mind
Did you know?
The biggest urban and European architectural site of Le Corbusier is at Firminy. Site
Le Corbusier brings together 4 historical
buildings and has received the 20th Century Heritage accreditation. The Firminy-Vert
district, which symbolises industrial France
during the ‘Trente Glorieuses’ (‘thirty glorious years’ or the years of reconstruction
following the Second World War), received
the Grand Prix for Urban Planning in 1961.
The architect Le Corbusier co-chaired the
association for the synthesis of the plastic arts with Matisse and he also corresponded with Chagall.
In 1950, he was called in India by the
Prime Minister Nehru to build a major
city symbol of peace.
In Bagdad, he built his second world
olympic stadium with the Fiminy’s
one.
A Utopia Accomplished
Absolute must-see!
Site Le Corbusier tells part of the story of
the grand social and urban utopias of the
past century. These utopias were born as
a result of a coming together of visionary
architects and bold professionals who
shared the same belief: architecture and
modern urban planning could help build a
better world.
Wednesdays and Saturdays guided tours
are very appreciated. Do not forget to make
a reservation.
Knowledgeable guides will give you the
keys to understanding 20th century architecture.
Enjoy the stunning play of light during the
free morning tour of the church of SaintPierre.

The museum offers the chance to discover the world of mining through its buildings, which, since their closure in 1973,
have preserved the traces of the men who
worked there, and to follow in the footsteps of the miners with its unique reconstructed mine gallery.
Since 2012, Couriot has been the subject of an important programme of work
aimed at protecting its heritage, making
your visit more enjoyable and updating its
visitor’s trail.
Since December 2014, the site has
unveiled 1 000 m2 of new exhibition
space. A children’s playground, picnic
areas and large lawns are available to
all on an 8 hectare park surrounding the
headframe.
After having examined the ‘grand lavabo’
(large washroom), go down into the
depths of the mine inside the cages attached to the headframe, then climb aboard
the pit train and discover the reconstructed
mine gallery which is as close to reality as
possible.

City tour 2: Saint-Etienne, parks
and gardens one step at a time
Saint-Etienne is one of the biggest cities in France to have the most inner-city
green areas with over 700 hectares of parks and public gardens in the city. Your
walks will make everyone go green with envy!
1 Puits Couriot / Parc-Musée de la Mine
3 Jardin des Plantes
The preservation and promotion of the
city’s mining heritage make this place
unique and a great place to soak up SaintEtienne’s industrial heritage (cf p. 12).
The garden is at the top of the city on Villeboeuf hill with a rich variety of flora and
fantastic views of the surroundings.
2 Musée d’Art et d’Industrie garden
Two very different settings in the garden
surrounding the museum:
• a forest walk via the upper entrance following the Larousse ascent;
• a beautiful garden via the main entrance
with square patches of dye plants
producing natural vegetable dyes.
Saint-Etienne was listed as a French City of Art
and History in December 2000. The city promotes its 19th and 20th century industrial heritage and reflects its powerful social history.
The City of Art and History provides guided
and self-guided tours throughout the year
to explore Saint-Etienne, its conferences and
events.

Saint-Etienne, a multifaceted
city of culture
The city’s infectious energy makes Saint-Etienne what it is today.
A wealth of events, a variety of shows, a diverse range of local and international artists… you’ll be spoilt for choice: festivals (Paroles et Musiques, 7 Collines,
Rhino Jazz, Arts Burlesques, BWD12, etc.), theatre-cafés, small theatres, etc.
Opéra de Saint-Etienne,
lively advocate for the art of opera
A love of opera is not just an empty phrase
in Saint-Etienne!
Opera has certainly remained one of the
greatest cultural conduits in the Loire for
46 years, influenced no doubt by the great
Jules Massenet, who was born in Montaud in 1842 and who made his mark on
the city of Saint-Etienne with both his
magnificent works and his festival.
A fantastic musical journey awaits you at
the ‘Opéra de Saint-Etienne’, with its truly
magnificent orchestra and choirs.
Le Zénith, on the front row
The only Zénith in the Rhône-Alpes region
will take your breath away with its aerodynamic structure designed by the internati
nal architect Sir Norman Foster.
Le Zénith Auditorium can be adjusted to accommodate between 970 to 5,396 people
seated and between 1,838 to 7,092 people
seated or standing. These many di fferent
configurations enable it tohosts major
French and international productions along
with sports events, business conve ntions,
conferences, seminars and private functions.
