CREATIVE PORTLAND
Hello, Art Walkers!
Don’t Miss –
This month marks the 154th First Friday Art Walk in
Portland, Maine. Since October 2000, people from all
over the state and beyond have come to the Arts District
every month—rain, snow, sleet or shine—to enjoy all
kinds of visual and performing arts… for free.
Today, thousands stroll back and forth along Congress Street from
Longfellow Square to the Old Port visiting dozens of venues, greeting
friends and neighbors, grabbing a bite or libation, and enjoying street
artists and performers. Other neighborhoods have since joined the
festivities with shows in the East End, the West End, the Baysides,
Oakdale, Deering Center, and Peaks Island.
Based on research that Creative Portland conducted in 2011 with
Americans for the Arts, we safely estimate that the Art Walk results
in over $1 million a year for Portland’s economy. Yet, it’s actually the
tremendous sense of community and creative spirit that motivates
us to participate whether we’re an artist, an arts space or an art fan.
Portland’s zeitgeist suffuses the streets every First Friday with Maine’s
largest free monthly grassroots cultural event for all ages.
And, now, a new partnership starting this month with this newspaper
allows us to share our free listings and map more broadly. A hearty
thanks to our new friends at the Portland Daily Sun for reaching out
and making this possible!
So, grab a copy of the newspaper while meandering the arts-filled streets.
Discover a new corner of creativity. Visit a new gallery, museum or store.
Then, check out the listings online atfirstfridayartwalk.com to plan your
walk for next month.
Thank you, Portland, for having everything it takes to make this event
uniquely Portland. This is a truly special city.
Happy Art Walking,
Lightly. Kimberly Convery. Pen and ink on paper, 6 x 8 inches, 2013.
At: Mayo Street Arts through August.
