world of Texas singer-songwriters, being celebrated by Texas Music
Magazine as one of their artists of the year. The voice, the stories, the
images, the grace and infectious enthusiasm, it’s a complete package.
But it’s the power of her live performances that really have been

Not About Heroes
by Stephen MacDonald
directed by Eliot Giurlarocca
Not About Heroes is the unforgettable story of two of the
finest Great War poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon
– their friendship, their inter-dependency, their poetry.
Through the letters and poems of these two men, Stephen
MacDonald’s acclaimed play paints a vivid and moving
picture of their friendship and the conflict that brought
them together.

No Further Action
No Further Action will see Jim tell the story of his arrest and the
nightmare 12 months that followed,
the clearing of his name and
winning the heart of the nation as a Big Brother champion. Jim will
be doing this in the only way he
knows how, by entertaining people,
something he’s been doing to great
acclaim for nearly 40 years. It promises
to be the most outrageous, hilarious
and insightful show he has ever
performed, but most of all it will be the truth.
One hundred years on from the beginning of the First
World War, Not About Heroes is both exhilarating and
uncompromising in its exploration of love, war and a
friendship that changed the face of British poetry.
“I am not concerned with Poetry. My subject is War, and
the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity” Wilfred Owen

Berlioz Overture: Beatrice and Benedict
Onslow Symphony no. 1 (1831)
Beethoven Symphony no. 3 (Eroica)
Francois-Xavier Roth
Berlioz’ opera Beatrice and Benedict is based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing, and its
genial overture captures the teasing
and light-hearted spirit of the play.
Known during his lifetime as ‘the
French Beethoven’, George Onslow
was one of the most important
composers in France in the early
nineteenth century. His first
symphony is an attractive piece
which deserves to be heard more
often. The Eroica symphony
expanded both symphonic form and musical language in one
astounding blow.
Don’t miss this musical feast
featuring former stars from Les
Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, The Producers and other hit West End
musicals, performing in concert. The
show is constantly being updated
with songs carefully selected from
over eight decades of popular
musical theatre, including favourites
such as Suddenly Seymour (Little Shop
of Horrors), Oh What A Circus (Evita),
Defying Gravity (Wicked), culminating
in their tribute to probably the most popular musical of all time, Les Misérables.

Returning to The Haymarket after great success in 2012, Craig Gilbert’s
ingenious, acclaimed adaptation of Jerome K Jerome’s classic tale of
boating misadventure returns to the UK stage this autumn armed with
more singing, wilder adventures and sporting even brighter blazers.
Originally intended as a guide to boating on the Thames, Jerome’s
ripping yarn of youthful friendship, mischief and folly celebrates the
very essence of Britishness inspiring many of our comic legends from
Morecambe and Wise to Monty Python.
Original Theatre Company take this classic tale of British misadventure
and folly by the scruff of the neck. Equipped with a working pub, live
piano accompaniment, some ale, a dog and a feast of physical comedy,
they give you a night out to remember.

The Trial
An opera by Philip Glass
Adaptation by Christopher Hampton
Based on the novel by Franz Kafka
The meeting of two extraordinary
minds – Philip Glass and Franz Kafka.
Both are masters of their craft. Each has his own instantly
recognisable style. Together, they are the perfect match.
Kafka’s nightmarish tale of a man
arrested and prosecuted for an
unknown crime by a relentless and
inaccessible authority has lost none
of its chilling potency down the
years. Now, Philip Glass brings his
signature music and dramatic force
to this literary classic. Working with
Christopher Hampton as librettist,
this new opera faithfully follows
Kafka’s story, relishing the author’s
notorious paranoia and bizarre sense
of humour.

Haydn’s works represent the peak of classical string quartet writing,
and this C major quartet is one of his very best. It’s followed by
arguably Philip Glass’ best string

fascinating contrast to the other
Philip Glass works performed at The Anvil this month. The concert
ends with Dvorak’s magnificent
American Quartet, written at the

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt
We’re going on a bear hunt.
We’re going to catch a big one.
What a beautiful day!
We’re not scared.
A family go on an expedition of a lifetime – running down the
grassy bank, wading through the cold river, squelching over the
oozy mud, stumbling into the dark forest, then peering into a
cave… what will they find?
Liadov’s colourful miniatures are like musical Fabergé eggs. His talents
are shown to the full in the ‘fantastic
scherzo’ Kikimora, which vividly
depicts a malevolent character from
Russian folklore. Prokofiev’s magical
violin concerto opens dreamily and
continues with an acrobatic scherzo
movement. The finale presents its
theme in various guises before the
music evaporates in a haze of trills.
Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony has
probably been written about more
than the other five combined, but
whatever its significance to the
composer, its overwhelming emotional
impact is not in doubt. This orchestra
gave the piece its premiere, conducted
by the composer nine days before his
death, and it retains a special place in
its repertoire.

slickest, wickedly wittiest, most
delightfully choreographed cabaret
extravaganza of the year. Dress up

Original ‘dreamboats’, Marty Wilde,
Eden Kane and, John Leyton with
the Wildcats join forces.
The late fifties and early sixties were
without doubt some of the most
exciting and important years in the
history of music. With the arrival of
rock ‘n’ roll, a whole new pop culture
was born. Performing their own
hits and collaborating live on stage,
teen idols of their day, Marty, John
and Eden show us how rock n’ roll
shaped the style of music that we
listened to then and still do today.

performed by Roy Bailey and Robb Johnson
This abridged version of Robb
Johnson’s highly acclaimed
suite Gentle Men focuses on his
grandfathers’ experience of the
war. The songs present the effect of
history on two of its statistics, two
ordinary soldiers, two gentle men,
who survived the war but were
forever in its shadow. This shorter
version places real individuals, our
everyday lives, at the centre of the
narrative and our understanding of
history’s great events.
“In all the artistic commemoration
of the First World War, I wager
nothing will show more humanity
or understanding than Gentle Men”

Emily Portman Trio
Emily Portman is the 2013 holder
of the BBC Radio Two Folk Award
for Best Original Song; an accolade
which reflects her power to lure
listeners into a complex, dark and
brooding realm. Her ethereal voice
and the trio’s enchanting harmonies
belie a world of cruel deeds and
sordid city landscapes, part inspired
by traditional balladry and part by
rich literary sources, from the myth
of Leda and the Swan to the magical
realism of Angela Carter.
Twenty years ago Britain’s favourite
publican Al Murray, The Pub Landlord,
embarked on his one man mission
as the King Cnut of Common Sense,
holding back a tide of bottled

at the lager top, come and see him at

Basingstoke Choral Society will be celebrating St. Cecilia’s Day by
performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah,
which must rank as one of the best
loved of all choral works. Composed in
the spirit of his Baroque predecessors,
the beauty of this work is its lyricism
and orchestral style. It was commissioned
for the Birmingham Festival, where it
was premièred in 1846, in front of an
audience of two thousand. The
melodrama of the text, the beauty of
the arias and the magnificence of the
stirring choruses make this an evening

Blumine was originally part of Mahler’s First Symphony, but after the first few
performances, the composer decided not to use it. It remains a charming and
romantic piece, reprenting a lovers’ serenade. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto is
gradually becoming more familiar after decades of neglect. The polonaiseinfluenced finale is a delight from start to finish. Arguments continue to rage
over the true meaning of Shostakovich’s most performed and recorded
symphony, but it remains a work of extraordinary emotional and musical
tension, poised on a knife edge between survival and disaster.
