Lola at Le Mans 2008 Media Guide Le Mans Test Day Report Lola LMP Coupe Inside Story Lola Team Profiles Lola 50th Anniversary All-Time Top Ten Lolas Peter Ashdown Interview More Than Motorsport Lola Sportscar Register 1998-2008 Complete Lola Le Mans Results Welcome from Martin Birrane 2008 is a very special year for Lola. Reaching the milestone of 50 years in race car manufacturing is quite a remarkable achievement. For most of this time Lola has been the largest and most successful constructor of race cars, producing winning designs for virtually every category from Formula Ford and Sports 2000 to Formula 1 and Le Mans Prototypes. The 24 Heures du Mans is the greatest motor race in the world and I am heartened to see a further increase in our entries this year to seven – the largest since 1979. Lola is currently the only constructor offering open and closed cockpit models in both LMP classes. We have enjoyed LMP2 victories in the last four races at La Sarthe and hope to add another in 2008. We also have all the resources major manufacturers require for a Le Mans programme and are actively seeking opportunities to realise our vision of winning Le Mans outright. The Lola factory, with its state-of-the-art wind tunnel, seven-post test rig, constantly updated CFD, FEA, and CAD systems, and top engineering team produces cars which are not just fast but also safe and beautiful. Lola’s capabilities also extend to the supply of composites and engineering services to the automotive, defence, aerospace, and communication sectors. This work is now as much a part of the Lola Group as our traditional motorsport activities. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all teams and drivers a safe and enjoyable race and to wish our seven Lola teams luck in their endeavours. Although I would prefer to be driving rather than spectating, I look forward to joining you in watching this classic event unfold. Martin Birrane Executive Chairman June 2008 Lola at Le Mans 2008 2 Seven-Strong Lola Entry Makes the Most of Wet Le Mans Test Day Lola sportscar runners prepared for the 76th running of the 24 Heures du Mans at the event’s official test day on 1 June. Seven Lolas are entered for the great race this year, the marque’s largest contingent since 1979. The conditions were mostly wet, putting the focus firmly on reliability and driver testing, especially for Lola’s latest coupe designs. Lola are the only constructor fielding all four of the available prototype configurations, with coupe and open-cockpit designs in both LMP1 and LMP2. Lola will also be aiming to score a record fifth consecutive LMP2 victory. The B08/60 LMP1 coupe of Charouz Racing System, powered by a V12 Aston Martin engine and run in conjunction with Aston Martin Racing, set the ninth fastest time. Tomas Enge, Stefan Mücke, and Jan Charouz all completed laps in the sleek blue and white machine on the car’s very first run in the rain. The well-drilled team has been the clear pacesetter among the petrol-engined cars so far this season, and its aim at La Sarthe is again to lead the privateer pack chasing the three Audi and three Peugeot factory entries. If it’s June, it must be Le Mans… Entered under the Charouz Racing System banner but functioning very much as the US-based CytoSport outfit, the Muscle Milk-liveried Lola B07/17-Judd LMP1 put in a solid day of running, ending the session 12th fastest. Team principal and driver Greg Pickett familiarised himself with the 13.65 km circuit, thoroughly enjoying the experience after a season of the American Le Mans Series competition in 2007. The 1978 Trans-Am champion is teamed with Germany’s Klaus Graf and Dutchman Jan Lammers, ensuring plenty of experience will be on tap for the team’s Le Mans debut. Chamberlain-Synergy Motorsport chose not to risk their B06/10-AER turbo too much in the tricky conditions. The Hugh Chamberlain-led team focused on making sure Amanda Stretton recorded her 10 rookie laps, paving the way for her to become the first British woman to race at Le Mans since Juliette Slaughter in 1978 (also in a Lola!). Amanda will share driving duties with husband Bob Berridge and Gareth Evans. The Speedy Racing Team Sebah effort was getting used to running their new B08/80 LMP2 coupe with Judd power at Le Mans. Their priority was to ensure that Le Mans rookie Steve Zacchia completed his mandatory 10 laps, which he accomplished before a minor incident befell Xavier Pompidou on the Mulsanne Straight. Thankfully, damage to the well-sponsored Anglo-Swiss Lola was minimal. 3 Looking back on the day, team principal Hugh Hayden said,“You never stop learning, but with a new car the hill is steeper. We qualified our rookie driver and our other drivers reacclimated to the circuit. What we didn’t achieve was working on race set-up.We could handle the conditions but it wasn’t worth risking anything. I think the competition’s strong, but we have a good package and we’ll try and give them a race. Consistency, compatibility of drivers, and reliability are the key to keeping it on the track and out of the pits.” The seasoned RML team had a successful test day with their MG-powered Lola B07/40 open-cockpit LMP2 .The familiar driving trio of Mike Newton, Tommy Erdos, and Andy Wallace enjoyed a trouble-free day and believe that they have every chance of completing a unique hat trick of LMP2 victories in two weeks’ time. Portugal’s Quifel ASM Team had a frustrating time at Le Mans with technical problems restricting track time in their B07/40 LMP2. Olivier Pla did however manage to complete his rookie laps as did Guy Smith who was reclassified as a rookie due to not having driven at Le Mans since 2004 – despite winning the race in 2003! From left to right below: CytoSport B07/17-Judd LMP1 RML B07/40-MG LMP2 Quifel ASM Team B07/40-AER The new-look Kruse Schiller Motorsport squad regrouped after a difficult Spa Le Mans Series race to ensure that their drivers all received adequate seat time in their Mazda-powered B07/40 LMP2 chassis. The German team have drafted in experienced Frenchman Jean-François Yvon to join Japanese ex-F1 pilot Hideki Noda and London-domiciled Frenchman Jean de Pourtales. Lola at Le Mans 2008 4 Interview Cooper on the Coupes Tell us about the design of the new Lola LMP coupes – what were the main challenges? “The main area to look at is obviously the cockpit and especially the doors, which can get complicated aerodynamically. Getting the aero right took over 200 hours of testing in our own wind tunnel, but before that we did a lot of conceptual work using CFD (computational fluid dynamics). The structural integrity of the chassis is just as important. We decided on a single-piece monocoque, which meant a very exhaustive FEA (finitie element analysis) study. One of the key concerns in all these studies was to avoid any excess weight in the roof area. I would say the result has turned out to be very efficient aerodynamically. The other changes from the open car have been largely driven by the coupe’s shape. We altered the fuel cell area and moved the oil tank. Even the adoption of a different geometry and a third-spring for the front suspension was influenced by the packaging issue.” Chief Engineer Julian Cooper How difficult was the ergonomic design of the LMP coupes? “Seating the driver properly and defining the windscreen area were probably the biggest challenges in designing the coupes. The shape of the windscreen, and in fact the entire cockpit, were dictated by aero and CFD studies dating back to 2005. It’s a lot more than a slippery form to fit around the driver, it’s a carefully and painstakingly researched design. For instance, we had to model the driver access into and out of the cockpit to determine the best locations for the door fixtures, which then required us to evaluate the torsional stiffness of the chassis. The access is really good in this car – probably just as good as an open car – as we’ve given the drivers various things to get hold of to help them lever themselves into or pull themselves out of the cockpit quickly and comfortably. The wipers and air conditioning also involved quite a bit of work. The Speedy LMP2 car has the air conditioning system we developed, while Charouz are running a Prodrive system based on the one used in the Aston Martin GT1 cars.” What are the major differences between the LMP1 and LMP2 coupes? “The LMP2 is shorter than the LMP1 and the bodywork does change subtly due to the different wheel widths. But the main things are the engine installation and keeping weight off the LMP2 car because the margins are more critical in terms of the minimum weight for that class. To make the limit, we used lighter composite panels on the LMP2, with the occasional downside that they are not quite as robust.” 5 What are the future development plans for the LMP coupe models? “The initial testing went very well; better than expected, really. Sorting out the air conditioning in the LMP2 coupe was about as difficult as it got. Beyond that, we are already pushing very hard to develop the cars both aerodynamically and mechanically, just as we have with all our sportscars over the last ten years. We’ve recently had a significant upgrade to our CFD and wind tunnel resources which has helped get this effort off to a flying start. It’s also been helpful to have the feedback of such a professional organisation as Aston Martin Racing, who are involved in running the LMP1 coupe.” What has been done in terms of 2008 updates for Lola’s open-cockpit LMP models? We did our usual post-season aerodynamic evaluation and produced an update kit for this season to improve the efficiency of the car in several areas. We did the most work around the front suspension and the gearbox, which now has a larger bearing in the left hand side cover. A few of the lessons we learned from developing the coupe were also incorporated into the update kit. The main thing we’d like everyone to know is that any of our open-cockpit chassis from 2005 and after can be upgraded to full coupe specification quite simply and costeffectively!” Lola at Le Mans 2008 10 Chassis: Lola B08/60 Engine: Aston Martin 6.0-litre V12 Tyres: Michelin Team Principal: Antonin Charouz Team Manager: George Howard-Chappell Race Engineer: Gavin Fuller Drivers: Jan Charouz CZE Stefan Mücke GER Tomas Enge CZE Website: racing.charouz.cz 6 Team Profile Charouz Racing System After a superb debut season in 2007 when Charouz Racing System proved to be consistently the quickest petrol-engined LMP1 entry in the Le Mans Series and Le Mans 24 Hours itself, the team has ratcheted up its effort another notch in 2008 by replacing its open-cockpit Lola B07/17 LMP1 with the first example of Lola’s groundbreaking B08/60 coupe. The new car is powered by an Aston Martin 6.0-litre V12 engine based on the famed marque’s successful GT1 powerplant. Charouz have joined forces with Aston Martin Racing to run the car under the management of vastly experienced engineer George Howard-Chappell. The combination has maintained Charouz’ status as the petrol-powered benchmark in LMP1. The Lola proved an immediate success, with a third place podium finish on its debut at the Le Mans Series season-opener at Barcelona in April. The car has also been the highest-qualifying non-diesel at each of the three LMS rounds to date, including the classic Monza and Spa circuits as well as Barcelona. Czech business and motorsport tycoon Antonin Charouz harbours ambitious plans for his patriotic team. For Le Mans, team regulars Stefan Mücke and Jan Charouz are joined by the Czech Republic’s leading driver, ex-F1 pilot Tomas Enge. Mücke is a former DTM ace while the 20-year-old Charouz was the revelation of the international sportscar scene last year. All are determined to improve on last year’s fifth place finish in the LMP1 class are confident of having the tools to do the job. Resplendent in the Czech national colours of white, blue, and red, the Charouz Lola enjoys backing from a range of international and domestic brands active in the Czech market, including O2 mobile telecommunications, Skoda cars and trucks, Castrol lubricants, Sonax auto care products, Sebring motor accessories, and Mountfield garden equipment. 7 12 Chassis: Lola B07/17 Engine: Judd 5.5-litre V10 atmo Tyres: Michelin Team Principal: Greg Pickett Team Manager: Jim Dunford Sporting Manager: Sam Hignett Race Engineer: Steve Conover Drivers: Greg Pickett USA Klaus Graf GER Jan Lammers NED Website: cytosport.com Team Profile Charouz Racing System Officially entered under the Charouz Racing System banner, this entry is actually a combined effort by Team Jota, which oversaw Charouz’ 2007 programme, and the US-based CytoSport operation. The link between all three elements is the Lola B07/17-Judd LMP1 used by Charouz in 2007. CytoSport launched its prototype career by running selected rounds of the 2007 American Le Mans Series in an ex-Dyson Racing Lola B06/10 powered by AER’s twin-turbo V8.With team principal Greg Pickett doubling as lead driver and supported by German Klaus Graf, the Californian outfit scored several impressive ALMS results, including a third place LMP1-class finish in last autumn’s Petit Le Mans. Management duties will be shared by Team Jota’s Sam Hignett, bringing to bear the experience which so nearly brought the British outfit a top-six finish at Le Mans in 2005, and regular CytoSport team manager Jim Dunford. It’s hard to believe that in a driving career that has spanned four decades in GTs and sportscars, this is Greg Pickett’s first Le Mans 24 Hours. The former Trans-Am champion and his German temmate will be joined at La Sarthe by one of the race’s most successful and popular competitors, Dutchman Jan Lammers. The 1988 race winner is contesting his 21st Le Mans this year. CytoSport’s red and silver Lola is sponsored by Pickett’s CytoSport company, an established leader in the US sports nutritional supplement market, and features its high-profile Muscle Milk brand. The other half of the team’s moniker is contributed by driver Gareth Evans’ Synergy Pharmaceuticals firm. This will be the team’s fourth consecutive Le Mans 24 Hours and the always popular yellow Lola will attract added interest this year as Amanda Stretton joins the team for her first appearance at La Sarthe. After guiding a pair of factory TVR GT2 entries to the finish at Le Mans in 2004, the Oxfordshire-based team ordered a new Lola B05/40 for 2005 and enjoyed an outstanding debut season in the prototype arena as Evans emerged with the Le Mans Series LMP2 class crown. 2006 saw Chamberlain-Synergy graduating to the LMP1 division with the first Lola B06/10 model to race in Europe, finishing second in the LMP1 team standings. Stretton’s husband Bob Berridge can be counted on to deliver a respectable grid slot for the team and his spectacular driving style is always a hit with the British fans, who are once again expected to provide the majority of spectators at this year’s event. Evans is expected to continue his steady rise among the ranks of ‘gentleman’ drivers gracing the 24 Hours. Replacing Peter Owen in the all-British driving squad, Stretton brings more than publicity to the team. Long a front-runner in historic and GT competition, Amanda has also shown an impressive turn of speed in sportscars, most recently in this year’s Le Mans Series pre-season test at Paul Ricard and previously in the Lola B98/10-Judd she raced in the 2005 Silverstone 1000km. 9 25 Chassis: Lola B05/40 (updated) Engine: MG 2.0-litre I4 turbo Tyres: Michelin Team Principal: Ray Mallock Motorsport Director: Adam Wiseberg Team Manager/Race Engineer: Phil Barker Drivers: Mike Newton GBR Tommy Erdos BRA Andy Wallace GBR Website: rmlmallock.co.uk Team Profile RML Ltd RML was founded in 1984 to undertake Le Mans projects with Aston Martin in Group C. Expanding into saloon cars during the 1990s, RML ran successful BTCC programmes for Nissan and Vauxhall, taking the title in 1995 and 1998.The Wellingborough operation’s recent history includes involvement with the road and race versions of the Saleen S7 supercar as well as Chevrolet’s success in the World Touring Car Championship. RML’s consecutive Le Mans LMP2 class victories in 2005 and 2006 with an MG turbo-engined Lola B05/40 were supplemented by three wins and eight pole positions in the Le Mans Series over the same period. Armed with the latest Lola update kit, RML finally claimed the series’ LMP2 championship in 2007. The team were unlucky to miss out on a Le Mans LMP2 hat-trick when Andy Wallace suffered a big accident. Despite slick work by the RML crew and a tenacious fight back through the field, the car eventually retired. After a winter of development, particularly on the engine side, RML believe they are giving nothing away in their quest for success at Le Mans – and their test day form suggests they may be right. In the constantly evolving LMP2 class, the open-cockpit RML entry faces a stiff challenge from the new Porsche RS Spyders and Lola coupe, but if anyone can pull off the coveted hat-trick, it is Ray Mallock’s ultra-professional squad. Mike Newton, head of the AD Group of internet video/CCTV technology firms, is recognised as one of the world’s foremost ‘gentleman’ sportscar drivers. Having forsaken a promising racing career in the early 1990s to pursue his burgeoning business interests, Newton returned to the cockpit in 2003 with RML and co-driver Tommy Erdos, and has driven with both ever since. Andy Wallace has become the team’s regular third man at La Sarthe, the vastly experienced Briton keen to add another winner’s trophy to those earned in 2006 and his very first Le Mans in 1988 with the mighty Group C Jaguar. Among the AD Group brands represented on the RML Lola are Dedicated Micros, Net-Vu, Flight-Vu, D-Tec, and Traffic Safety Systems, along with Aspen Grove Dressage. Essentially a merger between the successful Speedy Racing and Sebah Racing GT operations, the new squad boasts some serious talent, both in the car and behind the pitwall. The father-and-son Sebah Racing team of Hugh and Bart Hayden took the Le Mans Series GT2-class crown in 2007. They appear to have stepped up seamlessly to the demands of prototype competition, if their brilliant second place debut at the Barcelona 1000km in April is any indication. Equipped with Michelin tyres and the powerful new Judd DB 3.4-litre V8 powerplant, the Anglo-Swiss team’s package could make them well-placed to see off the challenge of the Porsche RS Spyders, whose durability over 24 hours remains unproven. The talented driver lineup includes Formula Nissan race winner Andrea Belicchi, 2004 LMS GT2 title winner Steve Zacchia of Switzerland, and last year’s LMS GT2 champion Xavier Pompidou. The trio seems to have gelled quickly under the Haydens’ guidance, demonstrating the steadiness of a long-established combination. The smartly-liveried Lola coupe boasts an impressive range of sponsors, including Rebellion Swiss timepieces, Lemo electrical connectors, Tornos machine tools, Alte car rental, Omerin high-temperature cables, Meguiar’s car care products, Valcuvia lingerie, E-Light laser engineering, Swiss Interim temporary employment, Microdia extrusion products, JP Optimum printing, and Lista industrial furniture. 11 40 Team Profile Quifel ASM Team Chassis: Lola B05/40 (updated) Engine: AER 2.0-litre I4 turbo Tyres: Dunlop Team Principal: Antonio Simoes Team Manager: Mauricio Pinheiro Race Engineer: Alan Mugglestone Drivers: Miguel Amaral POR Olivier Pla FRA Guy Smith GBR Website: asm.co.pt Founded by former British Formula 3 racer Antonio Simoes, ASM are now entering their third season in sportscars and targeting class victory at Le Mans following strong runs in 2006 and 2007. With a fresh look in both the cockpit and garage this year, the ASM have reason to be optimistic. The Portuguese ASM team were the sensation of the 2006 Le Mans Series, winning three races and only losing the teams championship due to a quirk of the rules. Having started the season under the wing of the Chamberlain-Synergy operation, ASM quickly found their feet and assumed full control of their programme at mid-season – accompanied by a name change which barred them from transferring points earned earlier in the season. The team continued to enjoy LMS success in 2007, with a convincing victory at the Valencia 1000km and runner-up spot in the LMP2 season standings. Former GP2 frontrunner Olivier Pla joins the driver lineup for 2008 and certainly has the pace to fight for top LMP2 honours, as does 2003 Le Mans winner Guy Smith. Miguel Amaral’s continuing improvement at the wheel means that ASM has one of the strongest driver lineups in LMP2 this year. The team have a sound engineering squad as well, with Mauricio Pinheiro and new recruit Alan Mugglestone spearheading the technical effort. Mugglestone ’s extensive sportscar experience includes a spell at Lola in the late 1980s. The team’s striking blue, white, and black B07/40 carries the logos of Iberian companies Quifel Energy, Leya publishing, Panda computer security, and One watches. Rising from the ashes of a 2007 fire which destroyed their LMP2 PescaroloJudd and most of their equipment, team principal Kai Kruse joined forces with Hardy Schiller, a former motorcycle racer and passionate fan of endurance racing. Together they acquired the Lola B07/40 chassis run by Fernandez Racing in last year’s American Le Mans Series and struck a deal to become the first team to run the Mazda’s 2-litre turbocharged powerplant in Europe. Despite a relative lack of testing, KSM have shown some promising pace in the early-season Le Mans Series rounds. The team’s Dunlop tyres were outstanding at Le Mans last year and the Mazda engine makes impressive power, so KSM could be a dark horse for the LMP2 podium come four o’clock on Sunday afternoon. Japan’s Hideki Noda climbed the single-seater ladder in the early 1990s to compete in a handful of F1 races for Larrousse in 1994. Hideki returned home to become a star of Formula Nippon, before making the move to sportscars and the LMS in 2006. The French-born, British-domiciled Jean de Pourtales began his racing career in single-seaters during the mid-1990s. Jean, who races with a prosthetic arm, is a determined character whose new aim is to forge a competitive career in sportscars. Dependable GT veteran Jean-François Yvon was a late claimant of the final place in KSM’s 2008 Le Mans lineup. A variety of European and Japanese sponsors adorn the KSM machine, including Eminence mens underwear, Cisco asset management, ABC industrial hoses, Global property development, DyDo soft drinks, Tereshia logistics, and ProStaff car care products. 13 Fun at 50: Celebrating Lola’s Golden Anniversary As befits a company which has covered the world of motorsport for 50 years, Lola’s golden anniversary is being marked by a full calendar of commemorative events. March saw the unveiling of the official anniversary poster depicting a memorable Lola from each of the company’s 50 years at the Race Retro Historic Motorsports Show. The World Sportscar Masters at Brands Hatch in May featured a Lola Trophy Race, historic Lola paddock, and a successful recreation of the first sub-60 second lap of the Kent circuit by Eric Broadley in his Lola Mk1 in 1958. At Le Mans, the ACO is marking Lola’s anniversary by featuring the RML team’s LMP2 Lola on the official poster for the annual Grande Parade des Pilotes and including the Lola T70 Mk3B raced in 1969 by Jo Bonnier and Masten Gregory in the parade through the historic heart of Le Mans early on Friday evening. Copies of the 50th anniversary poster will also be available then. As might be expected, Lola will have a high profile at the massively popular Goodwood Festival of Speed held on 11-13 July. An exclusive paddock will display a wide range of cars covering the 50 years and a parade of Lolas will ascend the famous hill each day. A dedicated hospitality area will round out what is certain to be a highlight of the year’s celebrations. Lola will also be represented at several other historic race meetings during 2008, including the Silver Flag Festival in Vernasca, Italy on 27-29 June and Silverstone Classic on 25-27 July. North American Lola enthusiasts will be well catered for, with the Mosport Can-Am Revival on 20-22 June, Brian Redman Festival at Elkhart Lake from 18-20 July, and Zippo Classic Grand Prix at Watkins Glen on 5-6 September. The town of Huntingdon will provide a perfect finale to the year’s festivities when it hosts Lola Day on 12 October. A parade of Lolas through the streets of Huntingdon will finish at the historic market square, where the cars will remain on display during the afternoon as residents of the Cambridgeshire town are invited to enjoy the cars and meet Lola luminaries – including some star Lola drivers of today and yesterday. A VIP dinner will also be held at the Town Hall, and Lola founder Eric Broadley will be officially honoured. Noteworthy participants included Brian Redman, one of Lola’s winningest drivers; Mark Blundell, who set the fastest-ever pole position lap at Le Mans in 1990 driving Nissan’s Lola-built Group C car; and Indy 500 winner and three-time CART Champion Bobby Rahal. Having mastered almost every racing category at one time or another during the past half-century, it was always going to be a tough task for those polled to narrow down their selection to just 10 favourites. The T70 Mk3B claimed the winner’s laurels. Acclaimed as one of the most beautiful racing sportcars of all time, it won on its debut at the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours and cemented Lola’s reputation in endurance competition. Lola Executive Chairman Martin Birrane counts himself among the most avid fans of the T70 series. “Many racing enthusiasts have fallen in love with the T70 over the years. When you consider the car was designed over 40 years ago, it’s astonishing how modern it still looks today. Some of the staff who built the original T70s still work at Lola and are back building the T70 continuation series cars today!” 10 T260 Can-Am ✹ ✹ ✹ ✹ ✹ 1 6 2 7 ✹ 4 3 ✹ ✹ 8 9 ✹ 5 ✹ 10 15 Interview Peter Ashdown: Lola’s First Le Mans Hero Peter Ashdown is credited with being Lola’s first official works development and race driver. The 73-year-old was also the first to drive a Lola at Le Mans when he shared a Mk1 with Swiss driver Charles Vögele in 1960. He went on to test and race several more Lola models until he hung up his helmet in 1962. Today, Peter spends most of his time at his retirement villa near Toulon in the south of France. Ashdown enjoying the spoils of victory, Clermont-Ferrand 1960 What do you remember about the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hours race? “It was my first Le Mans. I was scheduled to drive the year before, but had to forfeit my seat in a Lotus. I did most of the running in 1960 because Charles (Vögele) was very much the gentleman driver and he didn’t like the rain all that much. His business was high-class menswear and we got some great deals on suits! We got through to about 11 o’clock on the Sunday morning and then the engine broke. It was a shame because that little Mk1 could have finished very well. I remember I had to stay sharp when it came to looking out for the Ferraris. They were quick, especially with drivers like Phil Hill and Paul Frere at the wheel. But to be honest, on the Mulsanne it could get a bit boring! I always took an apple or two to munch on while I was doing a long stint.” What was your relationship with Eric Broadley like? “Very good. I have enormous respect for Eric and the way he operated. He was very quiet, but very skillful and pragmatic. I was with Team Lotus for a few years and Colin (Chapman) was a very different animal. He was quite ruthless, but Eric was a joy to work with. The Lolas I drove were always immaculately prepared, which gave you so much confidence in the car and what you were doing with it.” Ashdown and the Mk1 in action What was the Lola Mk1 like to drive? “Brilliant. It was so driveable. I remember at Brands Hatch early in 1960 Jack Brabham came up to me and Eric in the pits and he just couldn’t believe this little 1100-engined Lola was going quicker than his works Cooper. I also won at Clermont-Ferrand that year, which was Lola’s first ever international victory. We beat the great Jean Behra in a works Porsche there. That was very satisfying indeed. For Le Mans, we had a modified car with a larger fuel tank and we also had this huge windscreen. If I remember rightly, we used an MG gearbox as well. I think the Mk1 really shook the motorsport fraternity. It changed a lot of things in terms of sportscar design and of course only a few years later that Ford saw the Mk6 GT and got Eric to work on the design of the GT40.” Lola at Le Mans 2008 16 More Than Motorsport Lola’s facilities, personnel, and expertise constitute a powerful resource for non-motorsport clients.Whether the requirement is for sophisticated design solutions, advanced testing and simulation, or lightweight structures, Lola is ready to deliver innovation, high quality, and rapid turn-around for any project, from initial concept and feasibility studies to design and production. Road Car Consultancy Lola first established its credentials with the motor industry by transferring its skill in building short runs of race cars to two low-volume production cars, the Saleen S7 and Ascari KZ1. With its contributions to the Cadillac Cien, Jaguar R-D6, Nissan Qashqai, and other concept vehicles, Lola established itself among the handful of motorsport firms partnering major manufacturers in road car development. Lola’s current contract to supply the Class A composite body panels for a supercar co-produced by a leading automaker and top Formula 1 team underscores its manufacturing capability. Non-Automotive Projects Lola also contribute to a growing array of non-automotive projects. As well as serving the needs of Lola Cars and outside motorsport and automotive customers, Lola Composites is a supplier of composite tooling and components to the civilian and military aerospace sectors. Lola’s Altanet Technology operation specialises in large-scale defence, communications, and marine composite structures, such as the SCOT radome systems procured by 11 navies worldwide and fitted to more than 140 ships to date. Ascari KZ1-R road car Cadillac Cien concept car Royal Navy T45 destroyer radome T45 radome in mould at Altanet 17 Executive Chairman Martin Birrane is as dedicated to ensuring Lola’s competitiveness in the global high technology marketplace as on the race track, as seen in the 2007 appointment of Andrew Manahan as Group Managing Director. “Lola’s end-to-end capability, from design and tooling through to manufacturing is very attractive to non-motorsport businesses,” Manahan explains. “Access to our state-of-the-art wind tunnel and vehicle dynamics test rig are another advantage, and also help us deliver operational security and commercial confidentiality. But perhaps more than anything else, it is the speed, efficiency, versatility, and responsiveness bred by racing that makes Lola such an attractive partner for non-motorsport clients.” With great drivers having played such a prominent role in Lola’s racing success, it is ironic that remotely controlled vehicles now loom so large in the company’s business. Based on its experience producing aerial targets for Meggitt Defence, Lola Composites recently joined the Thales UK-led consortium building Watchkeeper unmanned aerial vehicles for the UK Ministry of Defence. Altanet produced the prototype Talisman unmanned underwater vehicle for BAE Systems, whose project manager noted, “Using technology from outside the defence industry allowed us to develop Talisman faster and more cost-effectively, and introduce innovative technical solutions along the way.” Sikorsky S72 engine cowling Fairline Targa 47 roof assembly Thales UK Watchkeeper UAV BAE Systems Talisman UUV Lola at Le Mans 2008 18 Appendix Lola Sportscar Register 1998-2008 Model Chassis Original Owner Model Chassis Original Owner B98/10 SR1/LMP900 HU01 HU02 HU03 HU04 HU05 HU06 HU07 HU08 Intersport Racing Konrad Motorsport Multimatic Motorsport SWR Cascadia Whittington Racing Kremer Racing DAMS MG EX257 B01/60 LMP675 HU01 HU02 HU03 HU04 HU06 MG X-Power MG X-Power MG X-Power KnightHawk Dyson Racing HU01 HU02 HU03 HU04 HU05 HU06 Team Rafanelli Schubot Racing Champion Racing Konrad Motorsport Team Rafanelli Intersport Racing HU01 HU02 HU03 HU04 HU05 HU06 HU07 HU08 HU09 Binnie Motorsports Chamberlain-Synergy Motorsport/Speedsport RML Ltd Intersport Racing RML Ltd Horag Lista Racing Fernandez Racing B-K Motorsport B-K Motorsport HU01 HU02 HU03 HU04 HU05 HU06 HU07 HU08 HU09 HU10 HU11 HU12 HU14 HU15 HU16 Martin Snow Racing TRP Racing Archangel Multimatic Motorsport KnightHawk Sports Racing Team Sweden Jeff Giangrande Robert Julien Robert Julien Jeff Giangrande Archangel Gunnar Racing Carl Haas Automobile Imports Intersport Racing Marshall Cooke HU01 HU02 HU03 HU07 Dyson Racing Dyson Racing Charouz Racing System Chamberlain-Synergy Motorsport/Speedsport B07/18 LMP1 HU01 Swiss Spirit B08/60 LMP1 HU01 HU02 Charouz Racing System/Aston Martin Racing Charouz Racing System/Aston Martin Racing B08/80 LMP2 HU01 HU02 Speedy Racing Team Sebah sold _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ B2K/10 SR1/LMP900 _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ B05/40 B06/40 B07/40 LMP2 _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ B2K/40 SR2/LMP675 B06/10 B07/10 LMP1 _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ The 1997 acquisition of Lola Group by Martin Birrane coincided with the introduction of new sportscar technical regulations by the FIA and ACO.
