November 10, 2014 | Vol . 17 PRESIDENT MESSAGE GLEN BAILEY Aloha Rotary Sunset Members, "I'm Excited". Its Foundation Month!! We had a great Club Assembly this past week where our ave of service leads told us about the great things they are doing this year. It was very inspirational hearing and seeing our plans to lead projects both here and internationally. At our meeting Rich presented two of our Rotary International Foundation awards earned last year. Our club is the lead when it comes to foundation giving in our district. I'm also happy to report that we voted and passed our By-Laws. Our meeting this coming Monday on November 10th is one you don't want to miss. First of all we will be visited by 10 Rotarians from the Toba Rotary Club of Japan. Next we will be inducting 3 new members. They are: David Talbert - Retired Airline Pilot - Proposed by Win Elvira Stanbro - Insurance Consultant - Proposed by Jan Kathy Brooks - Retired-Beautician - Proposed by JB Finally our guest speaker is Perry Springman lead singer/songwriter of the Canadian Band, Perry and the Poorboys. Perry will perform for our club as well as give a presentations on World vision and their Child Sponsorship Program. Perry's band plays primarily in schools, clubs, festivals and churches in Canada, The U.S., Europe, Australia, and South America. They have shared stages with such artists as Bob Geldoff, Bonnie Tyler, Thomas McClary (guitarist/songwriter from The Commodores), DC Talk, Michael W. Smith, Six Pence, and Steve Taylor. Perry has recorded 10 albums. The latest CD entitled Halfway Around, features the song 'Where Will You Sleep Tonight,' a beautiful song about two little girls; One of them lives in a very poor village in Africa, the other is Perry's daughter, Emma. Perry plays acoustic guitar, ukulele, and performs songs from his large repertoire of original music, and is often accompanied by one or more of his musician friends. Perry has a great passion for his work with World Vision and their Child Sponsorship program. He says, "it gives me an opportunity to give back a small amount of what I have received as a result in living in a prosperous country." He is very thankful to able to help connect people in the West with an impoverished child in need from the Third World! No stranger to Rotary Clubs, Perry has presented at more than 25 Rotary Clubs just in the state of Hawaii alone! Our Mission IHS, The Institute for Human Services, Inc., is a comprehensive social services agency working to prevent and end homelessness in Hawaii. We are a 501(C)3 – a private, non-profit organization, that is solution oriented and positive outcome-driven. Our mission is to provide “respite for those who are unsheltered and solutions that transform the lives of homeless and at-risk people.” Our vision is “a community where everyone has a right to, and responsibility for safe, decent, and affordable housing.” (Adopted by the Board of Directors, November 2008). ROTARY CLUB OF HONOLULU SUNSET MATCHING/NON-MATCHING GRANTS - 2014/15 " #1 Project Name: Jefferson School STEM Hydroponic Project Total Project Budget: $2,759 District Grant Funds Requested: NM $2,759 Project Narrative: Provide Hydroponic Plant Systems to all 17 classrooms at Jefferson Elementary School to promote a STEM study project for the children. Project is a combined Youth Services and Vocational initiative. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ #2 Project Name: Veterans Engaged in transition VET House Total Project Budget: $1,690 District Grant Funds Requested: Match $845 Project Narrative: Provide bedding and equipment to the VET House. This facility provides a halfway house option for homeless VETS in transition to self-sustainment. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ # 3 Project Name: Women in Need Assistance Project Total Project Budget: $1,745 District Grant Funds Requested: NM $1,745 Project Narrative: Assist Hawaii Women In Need halfway house homes on Oahu. Provided needed items to upgrade living conditions for the occupants and supplies for personal hygiene and activities. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ #4 Project Name: JABSOM H.O.M.E. Project Total Project Budget: $7,038 District Grant Funds Requested: Match $3,519 Project Narrative: Provide equipment and vaccines for the H.O.M.E. Project Medical Van that services Oahu Homeless centers. The van staffed by a group of volunteers mostly from the John Burns School of Medicine. This outreach program brings the medical van to homeless areas on Oahu. NOTE: Continuation/upgrade of the project our club started last year. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ #5 Project Name: Philippine Relief Total Project Budget: $2,000 District Grant Funds Requested: Match $1,000 Project Narrative: Provide emergency relief funds to the Rotary Club of Atimonan, Philippines to be used to purchase galvanized iron roofing sheets required to assist the affected people in their town. Sheets will be giving to those who lost their roofs during the recent storm. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ #6 Project Name: Toilet Block for Mazzieri Primary School Total Project Budget: $4,300 District Grant Funds Requested: Match $ 2150 Project Narrative: Installation of toilet block at Mazzieri Primary School which is located on the outskirts of Luanshya, South Africa.
