Skate Clinic Dryland drills at Birch Park July 20 Coconut Grove Social Skate Set For August 10 Don’t miss the new Coconut Grove social skate planed for August 10. Nearly 20 skaters have already signed on to attend this joint meetup with other area skate groups taking part in this social skate. We’ll meet at Monty’s in Coconut Grove (2500 South Biscayne Blvd) at 9:30 and start skating at 10. There will be areas were faster skaters can speed up and other spots where slower skaters will have short cuts to enable them to remain with the group. The total average distance of the skate is about 9 miles. Our skate will take us through the tree lined streets of Coconut Grove to Alice Wainwright Park for a brief break then we’ll skate to downtown Coconut Grove pausing again for a brief break before proceeding to Peacock Park and returning to Monty’s for lunch about 11:30 until about 2 or whenever people decide they have had enough sun, cool ocean breezes and Monty’s famous pain remover drinks. You’ll have better and lasting success by changing your eating Volume 18, Issue 8 Dewi Spence,CPT: STILL DIETING? SUBSTITUTING WORKS BETTER habits in ways you can live with permanently. So, rather than focusing on what you need to cut out of your diet (for instance, items in the left column) try focusing instead, on what you can include that will be a step up from what you have been doing (for instance, the items in the right column). Here are some examples to get you started… 1. White Rice Brown Rice With Herbs 2. Mashed Potatoes Cauliflower with Garlic, Rosemary and Olive Oil 3. Sweet Potato Souffle Pumpkin or Squash 4. Cream Cheese Hummus with Olives And Chives 5. Sweetened Cereal Non-Instant Oatmeal with Raisins 6. Fried Plantains Boiled Plantains 7. Whole Wheat Bread *Sprouted Whole Grain Bread 8. Jelly Donut Raw Nut Butter on *SWG Bread with Berries 9. Store Bought Fruit Juice Fresh or Frozen, Home-Blended Fruit Smoothie 10. By Candice Richard: Too often we know each other by our skating gear and first names. This is a glimpse of the of Beach Blader living under the helmet. Meet Paola Estrada and Francisco Lopez of Fort Lauderdale, gflopez@att.net When did you start to skate? Francisco: In 1998 I was recently divorced and out of shape, and I rented skates on Ocean Drive. I was terrible. I started going to clinics. I met Rita, Donna, Larry. I learned about the First Friday skate, got hooked up with the South Beach group and eventually with the first Great EsSkate. Paola: In 1999 my friend Sneh was taking skating classes with Donna, and she got me and Corinne to join her. Sunday mornings in South Beach with Bob as the leader—that was my first attempt. And I’ve been attempting ever since. Six years ago, Francisco took me under his wing. I got to be good for about six weeks. Lenny’s tried. Gene’s tried. I paid Nino. I took the Eddie Metzger clinic—it was horrible! Why are you a Beach Blader? F: Over the years, it’s the only organized club of skaters that’s always had a core of members, regular gatherings— Marshall’s parties, Gene’s house. Some of us stray away, but we always go back. This is my theory of skating: There are three kinds: fitness, social and racing. I’ve done all three, but 80 percent of my skating has been for fitness. I used to skate 3 or 4 times a week. Now I skate once a month, and I’m hurting afterward. So I’m trying to get back. What do you do when you’re not skating? P: We make babies! And we work a lot. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and the clinical director at a mental health center. Francisco is an industrial engineer who works as a safety consultant. We like to travel. With the baby coming, it will be interesting to see what we have time for. But if I have free time, I’d want to dance! That’s where my heart is. Hip-hop, tap, jazz—I’ve even taken line dancing classes. I won’t say I’ve hung up my skates—we skated in Birch Park together. I even bought new skates!—but this is my skating theory: I cannot skate in the dark, so no winter skating. And I cannot skate in the heat, so no summer skating. F: She takes the lessons, but she doesn’t practice. BBOSF Birthdays P: But we met on skates. It was 2000, and I’d been skating with Corinne and Rita, and we stopped at a craft show and were talking to Britto. Best wishes to our August Babies! F: It wasn’t Britto, it was the first artist who did a T-shirt for the Great EsSkate. Anyway, a group of us were doing an exploratory skate at Crandon Park in preparation for the first Great EsSkate, and we ended up at the craft show. I saw Corinne and Rita; I didn’t know who they were with. And we were all on skates. In the next eight years a lot happened, but Paola and I didn’t connect. We knew each other through skating. Member Name Date Tony de Campo 1 Kim Alvarez 2 Candice Richard 16 F: The Great EsSkate connected us. Year after year I did registration and she did the Friday dinner and the picnic. Our friendship grew, our interest in each other, and two years ago we got together. Damir Romic 22 Jose DeAndres 22 P: And now we’re expecting Andres Lopez Estrada at the end of September or first of October. L.A. Justice 22 Nick Colletti 25 P: He was in love with me, even if he doesn’t want to say it. F: We are contributing to the future of the skating community. Volume 18, Issue 8 Beach Blader News Meetup groups.. What’s up with that? Last November, Beach Blader member While we offer several skates during Anna Schafer suggested using meetup as an additional way for local skaters to find the skate club and join area skates. She signed up as an organizer with Meetup.com and got other local skaters to do the same. Now there are 67 members enrolled. Beach Blader members can create their own profile and communicate (“give a shout”) to other members to arrange their own skate or sign up for a scheduled Beach Blader skates. Recently Anna turned over her organizer duties to Jim Dolan. the week, based participation of indiv i d u a l s k a t e events we know that more local skates on different schedul e s would draw more skaters. So now would be a good time for other Beach Blader members to sign on as an assistant organizer and host skates in their local area or favorite location. If you are interested please give Jim, Dewi, Gene, or Rob a “shout.” We are considering using meetup for all Beach Blader communications, so we urge you to join meetup even if Check it all out at: http:// you are already a Beach Blader meminlineskating.meetup.com ber. It’s easy to sign up to meetup just go to : http:// inlineskating.meetup.com/83/ and fol- Birch CSO Picnic Aug 16 low the easy instructions. Once you sign up, you’ll see a m em b e r ’ s di r e c t o ry i n c l u d ing individual photos and profiles. You can create your own profile (just write a few words about yourself) and you can select how you want to receive reminders about upcoming skates. Another benefit of meetup is the ability to have joint meetups. This can bring even more skaters together and give every a chance to meet new people and more social opportunities within the company of old friends. The leaders of the area skate meetup groups will be working together to bring more skating and social opportunities to all area skaters. At times you will see the same event on more than one group and other times there will be different events and skate locations on the same day and/or time. The local inline skate community is diverse in interests, skate ability, and desirable locations. The various meetup groups will reflect that as we plan to attend to the needs of our members and the skating community to make inline skating a fun and social sport for everyone. Page 6 Marshall & Lisa’s Frozen Margarita Labor Day Weekend SK8/BBQ Pool Party…It’s August, so Labor Day is closing in a n d wi t h i t c om e s M a r sh a l l & Lisa’s Frozen Margarita Aura VI Labor Day Weekend SK8/BBQ Pool Party. The annual party for area skaters and bikers comes early this year and is scheduled for Saturday, August 30. We’ll meet at 5pm and depart for a Delray Beach area skate/bike at 5:30 pm. The route is about 10 miles Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a favorite skating venue for many of us. It’s also been the scene for several Beach Blader picnics, in line skate races and even an overnight party. The park has many hiking trails and has great beach access. Now some exciting things will be happening at Birch State Park that will be of special interest to everyone who uses the park. A number of Florida state parks including Birch have a group of local citizens who volunteer to support the park by various tasks including creating programs that are in the park systems overall plan but fall outside of the budget. Called Citizens Support Organizations (CSO) these volunteers work with park officials to enhance park programs and may even raise money to fund special projects. The Birch Park Citizens Support Organization invites you to a picnic at 11:00 am on August 16, 2008 in the park to tell you all about a new program called Trestles to Trails and urge you to become a member of the park program.. We are certain that you will be just as excited about the new project as we are, so please take a moment to read the attached flyer and come out and see for yourself how much this new project will enhance the park. through the historic downtown and beach area and includes 2 bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway The BBQ starts at 7:30pm with BBQ chicken, Rack of Lamb, Shrimp, Frozen Margaritas, door prizes , a raffle, and music. Marshall and Lisa are also resuming their Ultimate Dessert Challenge. So if you think you can make a great desser t, then bring it. Otherwise, please bring your favorite side dish and beverage too if you pref er something other than Marshall’s & Lisa’s World Famous Frozen Margaritas For more details and directions please refer to the attached flyer in this newsletter.
