Pride of the Latvian Economy
EXPORT AND INNOVATION AWARD 2012
Pride of the Latvian Economy
Dear Reader!
A company that has created an innovative product, achieved noteworthy export results, or offers a product or service that is a serious rival to
imported products or services, sets a good example of how the spirit of
enterprise is fostered in Latvia. Such examples are compiled in the publication Pride of the Latvian Economy.
We are pleased to present to you the winners of the Export and Innovations Award 2012 competition – companies that have not only
achieved notable results in their business sectors but, by participating
in the competition, confirmed the spirit of competition so characteristic
of the business environment.
The Investment and Development Agency of Latvia has been organizing the competition Export and Innovation Award for eight years in a
row. The competition is important in presenting an opportunity to evaluate and honor the best Latvian enterprises engaged in healthy rivalry.
The participants vie for awards in several categories, presenting their achievements, new products that are successfully marketed abroad or
high-quality products made for the local market. The companies’ applications for the Export and Innovation Award competition prove its
importance for Latvian enterprises and its popularity with the general
public.
The publication Pride of the Latvian Economy was prepared as part of
the European Union’s Structural Funds project Programme for Motivating Innovative Entrepreneurship. A key objective of the program is to
encourage society to set up new businesses. We hope that the publication will become a source of inspiration and a guide to new, active
enterprises, fostering their successful development.

Seeking the Pride of Latvia’s Economy
To boost the competitiveness of Latvia’s entrepreneurs on both domestic and foreign markets, bring about production
and retail of commodities with high added value, and single out the most successful players in the sector, the Ministry
of Economics and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) for the eighth year have organized the
competition – Export and Innovation Award. Its main objective is to showcase the talent of Latvia’s entrepreneurs in materializing unusual and innovative ideas, creating a wide variety of products with the highest added value, and thereby
ably competing with world-famous companies.
114 bids from enterprises from all parts of Latvia were received for the 2012 competition, representing the key export
branches – wood processing, furniture manufacture, metalworking, automotive industry, electronics, appliances, light
industry, polygraphy, construction supplies, food production, textiles, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, information technology, design elements, etc.
This publication serves as recognition for those companies who have a success story to tell, that the products they make
are not only succesful replacements for their imported counterparts on local markets, but are also in demand on export
markets, resulting in Latvia’s name becoming better known internationally.
2
Export and Innovation Award
The competition was originally meant to rate and then honour Latvia’s most successful exporters, but over the years
such categories were also added as Innovative Product, Import Substitute Product, and Industrial Design. A competent jury evaluates companies that excel at offering innovative products on the market, that are able to replace
imported analogues with their products, and that outdo existing product designs by new and innovative ones.
The total amount of export of the award-winning companies of the past three years is over EUR 796.81 million, and
the most exportable and innovative companies employ more than 7500 people on aggregate.
This year, companies applied in four competition categories: Best Exporter (in two groups: large and medium-sized
companies, and small companies), Import Substitute Product, Innovative Product and Industrial Design. As usual,
participants in the fifth category, Leading Exporter, are selected by jury based on export data and investment in
sustainable development.
A total of 28 companies were nominated as finalists of the Export and Innovation Award 2012 competition.
3
Evaluation and Awards
Evaluation of the Export and Innovation Award’s contenders is conducted in two rounds. In the first, the distinguished
jury reviews the questionnaires filled out by companies on the products they have entered for the competition, and
operational figures. In the second, the nominee-companies are visited by jury members for a first-hand look and the
opportunity to discuss with management the respective sector’s problems and the company’s future prospects on local
and foreign markets.
The jury is made up of economists, members of the Latvian Confederation of Employers, the Latvian Institute, the Latvian
Technological Centre, university professors, regional agency chiefs and other experts.
Each competition category’s winners (first and second place) receive all-expenses-paid business trips – accompanying
top state officials on foreign visits, in LIAA-organized trade missions and/or individual commercial sojourns. Third-place
winners receive free advertising space in any of LIAA’s informative publications.
All winners in addition have the right to use the Export and Innovation Award 2012 logo for their promotional materials
and on product packaging. Information about all contenders is placed on LIAA’s homepage at www.liaa.gov.lv with a link
to the respective company’s Website.

Title Leading Exporter
Mikrotīkls Ltd.
Mikrotīkls Ltd.
Routers and wireless systems
Mikrotīkls Ltd. (MikroTik) is a Latvian company founded in 1995 to develop routers
and wireless ISP systems. MikroTik now provides hardware and software for Internet connectivity in many countries around the world. The company has created the
RouterOS software system that provides extensive stability, controls, and flexibility
for all kinds of data interfaces and routing.
„The main feature of MikroTik is that the company creates
and develops products, which are then manufactured by
other MikroTik approved companies. We like to concentrate
on areas, we believe, we are the best at, and let others do
what they are best at. At the moment, this cooperation has
been very successful.’’
Arnis Riekstiņš,
MikroTik President:
„Three factors have determined the
success of our company – orientating
ourselves towards the global market,
the constant development of new
products, as well as educated employees, who are interested in what they
do. We have always based our business
on how we create our products, and
that persons make the decision to buy
our products not based on being encouraged to do so, but making the decision themselves. We have not participated in any state tenders or received
any kind of European funding.”

Turnover (2012): EUR 79.98 million
Number of employees (2012): 82
Main export partners: EU, USA,
China, Indonesia
6
The company’s products are manufactured in production plants in Latvia, Lithuania and China, while the equipment and accessories themselves are sold through
various distributors around the world. MikroTik is one of Latvia’s largest exporters.
The company began its activities connecting research establishments with wireless
connections, which back then was a revolutionary innovation. Furthermore, the
company’s first project abroad was in Moldova – connecting the country’s parliament and government buildings with Internet.
„We understood that the Latvian market was too small, thus
we must manufacture something that can be used everywhere. Orientating ourselves towards the international market is our success story. ‘’
The company admits that the situation in the IT sector keeps changing rapidly. Often, when a new product is developed, others look at it and find ways to manufacture it faster and at a lower cost, thus the original developers are forced to abandon
production. In such cases, decisive is the role of the creative team, which is capable
of innovative thinking and being able to immediately react to the latest technological innovations on the market.
Three years ago, MikroTik opened a subsidiary in Hong Kong, so that it could more
conveniently oversee production and sales in the Far East. In other areas of the
world, the company’s products are distributed by cooperation partners. The company attracts new clients through its web-site, as well as participating in IT exhibitions around the world. Furthermore, the company itself organizes its own exhibitions and conferences.

Glass with anti-reflective coating – Artglass, Sapphire, Diamond
The high technology plant GroGlass is one of only five such companies in the world
that is capable of manufacturing glass with anti-reflective nano-coatings. The
unique GroGlass production equipment was created by the local company Sidrabe,
but in 2008 the company began manufacturing anti-reflective or ‘’invisible’’ glass.
„Priceless artwork framed in glass at the London National
Art Gallery and the Louvre in Paris, Bang & Olufsen television
displays – these are just some of the many examples where
this high-quality Latvian made anti-reflective glass is being
used.’’
The anti-reflective glass manufactured by the company is being used in a wide variety of sectors – glass framing art, television screens and electronic displays, glass
supermarket refrigerators, as well as modern architectural and interior design solutions. In the manufacturing process, the glass has several metal oxide coatings
applied on both sides, with the thickness of the coating being about 1/500th of a
human hair, thus virtually eliminating glare by reducing reflection to 1%. Furthermore, GroGlass glass is capable of UV protection of up to 100%.
Aleksandrs Kelbergs,
GroGlass Ltd. Director:
„Our anti-reflective coating makes the
glass practically invisible and eliminates reflections, which allows modern
architects all over the world to include
our glass products in shop and restaurant windows, VIP areas in stadiums
and many other places where visibility
must be perfect. We are extremely
satisfied with our cooperation with the
Investment and Development Agency
of Latvia and that we were able to attract European funding for research to
create new products and conquer new
export markets.’’

„The foundation of the company’s success is the fact that it
has a well thought-out product portfolio differentiation, as
well as persistent work on product research and development. One job in manufacturing, ensures several jobs in the
service industry, thus we are pleased that in such a way we
are supporting the Latvian economy.’’
At the moment, GroGlass has taken approximately 70% of the market in several
European countries, and has also won several prestigious awards, including the
Export and Innovation Award in 2012. Creating a new, innovative and successful
company in a specific sector is not easy, however, the GroGlass success story can
serve as a source of inspiration for Latvian entrepreneurs hoping to find new ideas
for new brands that can proudly say - ‘’Made in Latvia’’.
Lauma Fabrics Ltd.
Raw materials for manufacturing lingerie
Lauma Fabrics main business lines include production and sale of materials for the
manufacture of lingerie and medical products. The materials offered by the company come in a range of harmonious colours, including a wide array of lace and
patterned fabrics in a variety of functional, classical and more complex motifs; the
company also produces lighter, more delicate lace and knitted fabric.
Lauma Fabrics is the only company in the Baltic countries that can provide clients
with all they need for making lingerie. This means that the production process includes thread preparation, knitwork and spinning, treatment, quality control, cutouts, tailoring and sewing. The production process at Lauma Fabrics combines a
number of technologies to create complex products that the company can offer to
clients in one set.
„In this kind of business, you need to keep track of fashion
trends and client requests. The demand for our products
is determined by various client-related factors: the client’s
main business, market segment, business going well or going bad.”
Edijs Egliņš,
Lauma Fabrics Ltd. Director:
„When you work in the textiles and
fashion business, you have to keep in
mind that large amounts of money
must go into product development.
The company has never tried to save
on the development of new products,
which is why the materials produced
by the company are used by over 200
lingerie brands in more than twenty
countries. We cannot compete with
China in terms of prices, but we are
open to co-operation with any lingerie
producers to whom original design,
quality and service matter.”
Website: www.laumafabrics.com
Turnover (2012): EUR 34.43 million
Number of employees (2012): 550
Export countries: Belarus, Lithuania,
Estonia, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, France
Lauma Fabrics products are sold in twenty countries in total. The company works
with clients by meeting them individually and at fairs, constantly maintaining contacts to achieve co-operation that lasts for many years. Furthermore, the company
has agents in several countries, as well as wholesalers that act as go-betweens for
Lauma Fabrics and its clients.
Taking into account that many local companies in Latvia have been historically
developing along with Lauma Fabrics, this kind of co-operation has always been
excellent and successful, and the company is very pleased with this. The company
has also developed good co-operation with LIAA, which currently supports the reconstruction of the company’s finishing facility.
„The main objective this year is to successfully complete the
reconstruction of the finishing facility without halting the
production process. As a result of this reconstruction, the
quality of our products will be higher, the company’s energy
efficiency and customer service will improve, which in turn
will significantly consolidate the company’s competitiveness
in the future.”

Arčers Ltd.
Planning, manufacturing, and assembly of glazed building structures, construction work
The construction company Arčers was established in 1992. Its operations are
focused on the construction and reconstruction of buildings, as well as the design,
planning and construction of glazed and aluminum constructions. Arčers has also
worked on projects abroad, carrying out mainly specialized construction projects.
Approximately 35% of the company’s glazed construction products are exported –
aluminum, plastic and glass interior and exterior constructions. The company’s
main export region is Scandinavia, especially Norway, Sweden, as well as Western
Europe, especially Belgium. The company also has experience in such countries as
Denmark, United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
„Both the Scandinavian and Western European markets are
long-standing, and business persons in these regions are
very experienced, who all highly value quality, cooperation
history, speed in solving problems, as well as attitude towards clients. Overall, the most optimal export markets for
Latvian builders are Scandinavia and Western Europe. Price is
important in these regions, but not necessarily the determining factor.”
Edijs Purmalis, Arčers Ltd. Deputy
Chairman of the Board:
„Our cooperation experience with the
Investment and Development Agency
of Latvia has been very successful, as
we ourselves wished to utilize all of
the opportunities the agency offers
companies to expand their businesses
abroad. It is wrong to believe and
expect that it will provide companies
with foreign contracts. Each company
has to achieve this themselves.”
Website: www.arcers.lv
Turnover (2012): EUR 46.95 million
Number of employees (2012): 200
Export countries: Norway, Sweden,
Belgium
10
Another important factor is the distance of export markets, which can substantially
influence the final price. However, Arčers remains competitive in this area as well –
calculating travel costs, subsistence allowances and living costs, Arčers can offer a
price similar to what local companies can offer.
„It must be pointed out that when entering new markets,
in many cases, there is a long process of harmonizing documents to obtain the necessary permits, as well as various
inspections are carried out. Furthermore, companies also
frequently come in contact with hidden market protection
mechanisms. Strict legislation in foreign countries, as well as
the active work of local labor unions, ensures that salaries are
in accordance with the salary level in that respective country.
Latvian entrepreneurs can save on cheaper energy resources
used during the production process, as well as on engineering solutions, which are often equal and even superior to
what local companies can offer in foreign countries.”
Brabantia Latvia Ltd.
Ironing boards and laundry dryers
Brabantia Latvia is a subsidiary of the Dutch concern Brabantia International B.V.,
which has over 90 years of experience in the manufacturing of household products. Brabantia Latvia began its operations in Latvia in Talsu Region’s Ģibuļi County
in 2008. Evaluating the most suitable location for its production plant, the parent
company compared several countries in Eastern Europe. Latvia was finally chosen
because of its highly developed metalworking traditions, membership in the European Union, having the euro currency pegged to the national currency, as well as
the overall favorable environment for business activity.
Brabantia Latvia manufactures durable, functional and long-lasting household
products, which are made out of high quality materials. The company is capable of
manufacturing one ironing board per minute, and several hundred per day. Each
week, the company ships seven or eight truckloads of products to warehouses in
Central Europe and England. Since the company began its operations in Latvia, it
has produced over one million ironing boards and 860,000 drying racks.
„The company’s first steps in Latvia were taken with major
support from the Investment and Development Agency of
Latvia. Good cooperation has also been established with the
local government.”
Georgijs Buklovskis,
Brabantia Latvia Ltd. Plant Director:
„In the five years since we established
our production plant in Latvia, we
have become one of the most effective
manufacturing companies in the country. The efficiency of Brabantia Latvia,
per one employee, is two times higher
than the EU average and four times
higher than the Latvian average. This
gives us the opportunity to successfully offer our products on the international market.”
Website: www.brabantia.com
Turnover (2012): EUR 11.49 million
Number of employees (2012): 76
Export countries: UK, Belgium
99 percent of products manufactured by Brabantia Latvia are exported. Furthermore, export volumes in 2012, compared to the previous year, increased over twofold. Overall, the concern has 23 offices and 60 distributors all over the world, as
well as over 10,000 cooperation partners. Brabantia household goods are sold all
over the world in a total of 97 countries.
„Since we began production in Latvia, we have been able to
double production volumes and turnover each year. In addition to increasing financial figures and production volumes,
there has also been a proportional increase in products with
“Made in Latvia” on them, which is something we are very
pleased with.”
Business processes within the company are organized in accordance with the latest
and most effective business methodologies. The company utilizes a large number
of automated production lines, robots and other modern equipment. The company
is also constantly carrying out improvements and planning expansions for the future.
11
Jelgavas tipogrāfija Ltd.
Books, diaries, calendars, advertising materials and presentational materials for businesses
Jelgavas tipogrāfija specializes in production of books, diaries, calendars, advertising materials and presentational materials for businesses. The company’s competitiveness is based on high-quality production. Until 2005, Jelgavas tipogrāfija exclusively produced advertising materials. Later came investment in book production
technologies, purchase of required equipment and construction of a new printinghouse outside the city.
„A book is not only a product for generating profit. It is a part
of national culture. Each day, we create books from various
materials, combining ideas and visions with paper, materializing the thoughts of authors and artists. Through our work,
we contribute to a better world.”
The local market, where activity is currently the highest, is emotionally important
for Jelgavas tipogrāfija. Around 50% of the company’s production is sold to Latvian
book enthusiasts, the second half is exported.
„The export market helps maintain economic stability, but local books provide
more joy.”
Juris Sīlis, Jelgavas tipogrāfija Ltd.
Chairman of the Board:
„The printing-house has one the most
advanced modern technologies,
however, this is no reason to stop. Our
previous years can be described as
development years. We work with enthusiasm and pleasure, which results in
growth and boosts product quality and
operational efficiency. We will continue
our path of development, investing in
technologies, seeking and introducing
innovative solutions in book publishing, and training personnel.”
Website: www.jt.lv
Turnover (2012): EUR 6.95 million
Number of employees (2012): 110
Export countries: Germany, Finland,
Russia, France, Norway, Sweden,
Switzerland, Estonia, Lithuania,
Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium
12
The company chooses its export markets intuitively, of course, taking into account
various factors – social, economic and political. Support from the Investment and
Development Agency of Latvia and a chance to use the European Union’s structural
funds are important as well.
„Logistics, tax and customs legislation are particularly important on export markets, just like market share rivals’ technological capacity, chosen products, buying and payment habits.”
Recognition among the competitors indicates that we are capable of producing
competitive production and are European-level specialists in our sector. The company’s success is an award for all employees.
Papīrfabrika Līgatne Ltd.
Paper and paper products
Papīrfabrika Līgatne (Līgatne Paper Mill) is one of the oldest and tradition-richest
paper producers not only in the Baltic countries, but also in Europe. Today, it is the
only paper production mill and major paper recycler in Latvia. The company specializes in production of art paper for schools and young artists, core board and
paper cores, special purpose technical and packaging papers. The paper mill exports 70-80 % of its output. The company produces all of its products from recycled
paper, which helps protect the environment.
The Paper Mill has created a new product line called „Paper from Paper’’, which includes 20 different paper products, for example, office paper, art paper, as well as
colored paper notes. The company’s products are all „FSC’’ internationally certified.
Līgatne exports its products to Lithuania, UK, Slovenia, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden,
Slovakia, the Netherlands, Finland, Australia, Norway, Ukraine, Germany, Belgium,
Chile, USA and Poland. Over the past several years, paper consumption and production volumes in USA and Western Europe continue to decrease, but there has
been an increase in demand for specific design paper, as well as the importance of
recycled paper. The Paper Mill has been able to successfully combine both of these
niches, and is capable of competing with high-quality products for a good price.
Normunds Dzērve, Papīrfabrika
Līgatne Ltd. Member of the Board:
„The success is in large part due our
team, which works together to optimize the production process, as well as
implement new innovations and technologies. These are persons who are
not only capable of finding new export
markets, but are also capable of retaining long-time clients.’’

Belgium, Chile, USA, Poland
„We are a small paper mill, thus we are capable of fulfilling
specialized orders and the individual requests from our clients, which larger paper companies are not capable of. This
is proven by the geography of our extensive export markets
all over the world, as well as our loyal and trustworthy clients,
who have been working with us for many years.’’
In recent years, a trend has been noticed where Latvian residents choose local
products more frequently, as well as products that are ecologically and biologically
friendly. This is a very important aspect. We are beginning to see more and more
clients recycling their waste and giving their recyclable goods to local manufacturers – in this case recyclable paper to our paper mill.
„Participation in the Investment and Development Agency of
Latvia’s Export and Innovation Award 2012 was a bench-mark
of sorts for our company, as we were able to evaluate the work
we have carried out and come to the conclusion that we are a
competitive company on the global market.’’

Thanks to the company’s co-operation with the Kurzeme Business Incubator, established by the state to help new and promising start-ups make their first steps in business, a new logo has been designed for the company. There have been promotional
photo sessions, a catalogue of the company’s products has been released, packaging design for the company’s products was developed, and several market studies
were carried out and the company’s employees could attend training courses.
„Participation in the competition made us all feel like members of a team – we knew we were not alone and that we

The company’s main operational directions are production of all types of wheat

Evopipes Ltd.
Plastic pipes for engineering communications infrastructure
The plastic pipe manufacturer launched its business in 2005 when Modulex-Invest
Jelgava Ltd. was established in Jelgava with the aim to develop pipe manufacturing
industry in Latvia. The idea of building a production facility was proposed after it
was established that transport costs accounted for up to one-third of the imported
pipes’ price, therefore it would be rational to make the pipes in Latvia. At the end of
2008, the company was renamed Evopipes Ltd. so the company’s products could
be marketed internationally.
At the moment, the company, whose turnover on the Latvian market increased
more than twofold last year, is focussed on the development and production of innovative and efficiency-raising products. By 2015, Evopipes is planning to increase
its annual production and sales volumes to EUR 30 million.
„When investments are made in the construction of a facility’s pipe system, material costs account for up to 20% of total investment, therefore quality and durability of the pipe
system is of utmost importance.”
Edgars Viļķins, Evopipes Ltd.
Chairman of the Board:
„Evopipes has been successfully cooperating with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia for several
years already, and the company has a
very high opinion of this co-operation,

and dynamic content, making it a unique product in the world’s marketing scene.
„The product that we entered in the competition had been
launched on the market in 2010. Initially, Mailigen was only
meant to operate as an e-mail marketing service, but it has
been developing at a fast pace and now has gone beyond
the boundaries of the traditional e-mail marketing, becoming a platform that combines e-mail, mobile and social network marketing.”
About 90% of Mailigen users are foreign clients, whereas Latvian clients make up
the remaining 10%. On the Latvian market, Mailigen is the leading provider of email marketing services. The main target markets abroad include the USA, China,

JSC Latfood
Potato chips, sweet and savory snacks
JSC Latfood is the leading Latvian potato processing company whose core business
is production and distribution of potato chips, salty and sweet snacks. The company was established in 1993 and its products are known under two brands: Ādažu
čipsi, which in 2012 placed third in Latvia’s Favourite Brand Top in the sweets and
snacks category, and Taffel, the company’s brand for exported products.
The high quality of Latfood products is guaranteed by the raw materials: oil, spices,
and potato grown specifically for the company by twenty Latvian farms. On the domestic market, Latfood sells Ādažu čipsi, whereas products under the brand Taffel
are sold not only in Europe, but also in Georgia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Australia.
„The company’s turnover is growing on an annual basis, creating new development opportunities. Taking and keeping

the responsibility to our clients, importance of innovations,
green thinking and high quality standards on each pack of

Valdis Blūms, JSC Latfood
Chairman of the Board:
„Participating in the Export and Innovation Award 2012, the company used
the opportunity to take a detached

Latfood regularly invests in modernisation of production facilities, thereby creating
new development opportunities and offers to consumers. The company supplies
its products to 300 wholesale and retail outlets every day. The team of Latfood sales
representatives make sure that all orders are timely processed by making systematic visits to the existing clients and looking for new co-operation partners.
„On the Latvian market, Latfood is a stable market leader in
the potato chips and salty snacks segment, but by 2018 we
are planning to become the leader in the Baltics by also attaining the number one spot in Estonia and Lithuania.”
Five potato varieties are used in the production of Ādažu čipsi and Taffel products:
Saturna, Marlena, Lady Claire, Lady Rosetta, and Verdi. The main criterion when a
new potato variety is considered for cultivation is high quality of chips that will be
made of the potatoes, as well as long storage life. Of great importance is the variety’s suitability for the climatic conditions of Latvia – and high yield. The company
is planning to deepen co-operation with Latvian farms in the future, because the
volume of potatoes bought from the farms will significantly increase in two to three
years.
Liko-R Ltd.
Eeyeglass lenses
Liko-R was established in 1993. Initially, the company’s main area of operation was
to distribute products made by the Italian company Luxottica Group in the Baltics.
However, in 2005, the company began to develop and manufacture glass lenses
with high added value. Using the latest equipment, with highly precise digital lens
technologies, Liko-R manufactures specialized lenses for individual orders, meant
for persons with complicated vision problems.
The advanced glass lenses manufactured by Liko-R solve two problems at once, as
they easily blend the transition from looking into the distance and reading up close,
while at the same time look like regular spherical glass lenses.
„The company continues to closely follow along the latest
glass lens technologies, as well as the most modern materials
used to manufacture lenses. Thanks to our extensive circle of
cooperation partners, we are always the first in the Baltics to
offer the latest in optical trends.”
The company sees good opportunities in the Russian and Belarus markets, as the
distribution of advanced glass lenses in these countries is at a lower level than in
the Baltics due to their complexity.
Linards Kovaļevskis,
Liko-R Ltd. Director:
„The main advantage of our company
is the ability to manufacture highquality glass lenses in a short period of
time. We also offer direct consultations
on the most suitable glass lenses for
each individual order, as well as manufacture more complicated products, for
example, sunglasses with diopter lenses. Our motto is – a safe and healthy
view on the world.”

Turnover (2012): EUR 1.23 million

The main condition which determines the selection of export markets is knowledge of the optical markets in these countries, as well as previous experience working
in these markets. The main priority of Liko-R is to increase sales volumes of its manufactured glass lenses, as well as to continue increasing the proportion of exported products. In 2011, this proportion reached 11% of total turnover, in 2012 – 15%,
while it should see a two-fold increase in 2013, the company predicts.
„Participation in competition and the praise we have received have been very good, and there is constant incentive
for us to achieve our export goals, so that in the coming years
Liko-R could participate in these competitions as a leading
exporting company.”
Liko-R employs experienced specialists who are experts in their field. Furthermore,
the company also utilizes support instruments from other countries and the EU to
attract new employees, as well as to train current employees.

The production process itself is complicated due to the unpredictability of the materials used. One of the characteristics of the designer furniture market is limited
sales volume, due to the reason that a distribution network is made up of several
stages. Hence the final price consumers pay is substantially higher.
„Coming up with good designs for new products is often a
very innovative process in and of itself. To put together complicated shapes and effective elements, it is usually necessary
to take an original and unprecedented approach. In order to
ensure this, the qualification and enthusiasm of our employees is of huge importance. This characteristic is also a perfect
way to describe those working at Rīgas Krēslu Fabrika.”
Rīgas Krēslu Fabrika’s cooperation with the state has been highly successful, for example, with the support from the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia,
the company has participated in three international exhibitions in Europe, as well
as implemented a project which supports the introduction of new products for
manufacturing. Meanwhile, participation and success in the Export and Innovation
Award 2012 has provided the company with additional confidence that the path it
has taken was the right one.

necessary to take into account that
