This event not only changed his life, but it also changed the lives of the Conter family. Dealing with feelings of guilt, anger, and frustration, Savoia began his battle with post-‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Flashbacks, nightmares, isolation, and hyper-‐vigilance were some of the symptoms that he needed to deal with. In 2000, Savoia requested permission from the Conter family to establish a Trust that would end the silence and ease the suffering of others like him who were dealing with PTSD. The Trust would also serve to honour the memory of the Conter family’s beloved Tema. The Tema Conter Memorial Trust began in 2001 as a modest charity offering scholarships to paramedic students. Today, it has grown to become a hub for research, education and training, as well as a peer and psychological support resource for the men and women serving in Canada’s public safety organizations. 5 Why is this Tour important? In the wake of the many suicides and reports of work-‐related post-‐traumatic stress disorder within the ranks of Canada’s public safety and military organizations, we chose to take on this ambitious task of bringing a message of MOTIVATION, INSPIRATION and HOPE across the country. In 2014 we undertook the largest scale project this charity has ever organized, the 2014 Heroes Are Human Tour. Visiting 47 cities and towns, we brought our message to more than 5,000 Canadians. In 2016, WE’RE DOING IT AGAIN! First Responder Suicides 57 first responders have died by suicide since April 28, 2014. • • In 2014, 27 first responders and 19 military members died by suicide. Year to date, 30 first responders and 8 military members have died by suicide. Prevalence of Post-‐Traumatic Stress Disorder • • • • • • It is estimated that 9.2% of Canadians suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. 1 It is estimated that 25.6% of Canadian Correctional Officers suffer with Post-‐Traumatic Stress Disorder. 2 It is estimated that 25.5% of Canadian Paramedics suffer with Post-‐Traumatic Stress Disorder 3 It is estimated that 17.3% of Canadian Firefighters suffer with Post-‐Traumatic Stress Disorder. 4 It is estimated that 8.0% of Canadian Military Personnel suffer with Post-‐Traumatic Stress Disorder. 5 It is estimated that 7.6% of Canadian Police Officers suffer with Post-‐Traumatic Stress Disorder. 6 References 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Predictors of Post-‐Traumatic Stress Disorders in Police Officers 6 About the Tour th On Monday, May 2 , the tour will begin in St. John’s Newfoundland – one of 40 towns and cities across the country to host a 2-‐hour community based event that is open to everyone. Our goal is simple: to raise awareness and provide education about acute, cumulative, post-‐traumatic stress disorder and vicarious trauma, as well as suicide awareness and intervention. Each event will feature a preview of our feature documentary “The Other Side of the Hero.” About The Documentary The Other Side of the Hero plunges us into the world of the first responder. We’ll witness the excitement and bravado as these real life action heroes head out on a call. We’ll see the camaraderie and dark humour back at the station, as we get to know first responders as people rather than just the uniform that they wear. And we’ll discover the flip side of what can happen when a hero discovers that they are not emotionally immune to all that happens in the course of a shift. For five years, actor Enrico Colantoni played a police officer on the mega-‐popular TV show, Flashpoint. Some 20 years ago, Vince Savoia, a former paramedic, had to quit his job after a traumatic call that changed his life. He now runs the Tema Conter Memorial Trust, an organization dedicated to working with first responders suffering a little known side effect of their job: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In The Other Side of the Hero, these two men will meet several real life heroes across Canada. They’ll talk to their families, see daily life, laugh, and unwind with them. They’ll also be there to offer support, put a hand on a trembling shoulder, cry along with a firefighter who has discovered that the job isn’t all they’d expected. The cop who can’t hold it together back at the station or the paramedic who needs to take some time off after a particularly difficult call is often told to “suck it up.” What is the tragic result of not being given a chance to heal mentally? Depression, darkness, solitude, and at its worst — suicide. Every first responder has a story. Are we listening? When we don’t listen, we witness stress, crisis, and suicide. We are making this documentary so that first responders can be seen, heard and understood. 7 Celebrities Supporting and Appearing in the Documentary Our National Spokesperson, Enrico Colantoni In 2011, we welcomed Canadian actor, Enrico Colantoni as our national spokesperson. Enrico has starred in such TV shows as Veronica Mars, Just Shoot Me, Person of Interest, Remedy, and Flashpoint. Having a brother who is a retired police officer, and a chance meeting with Heroes Are Human founder, Vince Savoia, inspired him to help with the cause. “What 9/11 did to these [people] raised their status. But is seeing them giving up the ultimate sacrifice what it takes for a community to understand what they do every day? I hope not,” said Colantoni. “When simply doing their jobs means sustaining a life-‐altering trauma themselves, we owe our emergency workers and military personnel the respect and the dignity of first-‐rate care, understanding and support.” Enrico will be emceeing several of the 2016 Heroes Are Human Tour’s community events, including the finale in th Toronto on July 15 .
