Dear Librarian
Where better to start this quarter than with one of the mysteries to have
captured the collective imagination: the Loch Ness Monster – or Nessie as she is
known! In A Monstrous Commotion, Gareth Williams looks at the sightings and
investigations over the years and comes up with his wholly original theory.
A husband goes missing in the middle of the night and his wife is suspected of
wrongdoing in The Loving Husband by Christobel Kent, while in Rebecca
Muddiman’s Tell Me Lies the police have a body but the resolution of the case
isn’t as easy as it should be.
David Morrell returns with Inspector of the Dead, his second mystery featuring
Thomas De Quincey who is set on preventing the murder of Queen Victoria.
Elsewhere Dr Watson, Holmes’s erstwhile companion, embarks on another
mystery, this time involving a kidnap and vile ransom threat, in Robert Ryan’s The
Sign of Fear.
Music plays a role in two of this quarter’s titles. The Song Collector by Natasha
Solomons tells the story of a composer, unable to write since the death of
his beloved wife, who finds that his grandson’s talent enables him to compose
again – and to face an old family rift. More sinister is Gilly Macmillan’s The
Perfect Girl, the chilling tale of a child musical sensation who caused the death of
three teenagers.
Two very different titles this quarter depend on contact with the world beyond.
In Pamela Hartshorne’s House of Shadows Kate awakens following an accident
with no memories – except those of someone who died 400 years ago. In Karen
Robards’ The Last Time I Saw Her a psychologist tries to find find the real killer so
that the soul of her dead lover, executed for the crime, can rest in peace.
In the final part of Rosie Clarke’s Emma trilogy, Emma’s Duty, our nurse heroine
is finding it difficult in adjusting to her husband’s appalling injuries following his
return from the war. When a husband doesn’t mend his gambling ways, his wife
becomes the object of the attention of a ruthless mine owner in Maggie Hope’s
Eliza’s Child. Will an orphaned girl take her unexpected chance of happiness is the
question asked in June Francis’ Lily’s War?
In Ursula’s Secret by Mairi Wilson a woman heads to Africa for answers about
her true identity, while fledgling archaeologist Joan Seabrook visits Arabia with
the goal of visiting the desert fort of Jabrin in Katherine Webb’s The English Girl.
In Under Italian Skies by Nicky Pellegrino a house swap leads Stella to wonder
about the owner of the house in which she is staying, but in Martine Bailey’s The
Penny Heart Mary Jebb finds herself in the penal colony in Botany Bay in far less
salubrious conditions!
Virginia Mcgregor’s The Astonishing Return of Norah Wells looks at the problem
of what happens when a wife and mother who walked out on her family returns
six years later. In Steve Mosby’s Black Flowers another person to reappear is a
girl with a horrifying tale to tell. A missing girl leads the police to the murky world
of migrant labour in Steven Dunne’s A Killing Moon, while in Oliver Harris’s
The House of Fame – the final part of the Nick Belsey trilogy – the dishonourable
copper is thrown into the glitzy world of stars and gossip.
Andrea Camilleri’s ever-popular Inspector Montalbano returns in Game of
Mirrors, this time investigating a woman apparently targeted by persons unknown
and an unexplained explosion. Also back with another case are Kristina
Ohlsson’s Frederika Berman and Alex Recht who investigate a killer targeting
the Jewish population of Stockholm in The Chosen. Newly-located in Luxembourg,
probation officer Cate Austin is concerned that the police aren’t taking the
disappearance of a young girl seriously in Ruth Dugdall’s Nowhere Girl and being
a member of a mafioso family spells trouble for a new member of the Rome
police in Nadia Dalbuono’s The Few.

Jem Lester’s Shtum, a perceptive and heartfelt novel about a boy who won’t
talk has been compared favourably with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the
Night-time. Isolation and strange powers lie at the heart of Pairic O’Donnell’s
The Maker of Swans, while there is change in the air for one man in Paris as
Europe transforms out of all recognition in Jim Powell’s The Breaking of Eggs.
Veterans returning from war and a hurricane about to strike America create
unbearable tensions in Vanessa Lafaye’s Summertime, whereas life is much
more compassionate in Bernadine Bishop’s The Street.
Winston Churchill is seen as the man who won the war, but as Sonia
Purnell reveals in First Lady: The Life and Wars of Clementine Churchill, he
himself admitted that he couldn’t have done it without his wife. Set in those
dark days is Lucy Ribchester’s The Amber Shadows a mystery with Bletchley
Park as its background.
Robert Service takes a look at what really brought about the end of the
Soviet Union in The End of the Cold War: 1985-1991, while John Lawton has
produced a thrilling novel set during the early days of the Berlin Wall in The
Unfortunate Englishman. A severed arm in the Rose Garden at the White House
contains a message that US archivist Beecher White realises could have dire
consequences in Brad Meltzer’s The President’s Shadow. An FBI Special Agent is
on the trail of a man with a hidden identity who kidnapped and brainwashed his
young son in The End Game by Raymond Khoury; and the body of a senior
banker on a beach and the pending collapse of a CIA-funded global bank mean
trouble for financial analyst Kate Pendragon in Jamie Doward’s Toxic.
So there we have it; another not-to-be-missed programme of unabridged audio
books from Oakhill. To find out more about these and our extensive backlist,
why not visit our environmentally-friendly online catalogue. I’m sure you’ll be
spoilt for choice.

Lily’s War
Read by Sue Jenkins
When Montalbano comes to
the aid of his new neighbour,
Liliana Lombardo, after her car
is interfered with, the inspector
can little imagine where this will
lead. It soon transpires that the
young woman is being targeted by someone. But
is Liliana’s growing interest in Montalbano simply a
product of the detective’s innate charm? Or is she
trying to lead him into trouble? Meanwhile a bomb
explodes outside an empty warehouse in Vigàta.
But who was it intended for? As Montalbano and
his colleagues investigate they begin to receive a
barrage of false clues. The inspector realises that
he is being led into a hall of mirrors, where there is
danger at every turn and nothing is quite clear ...
About the author
Andrea Camilleri is one of Italy’s most famous
contemporary writers. His Inspector Montalbano
series was adapted for Italian television and
screened on BBC4.
The mutilated body of a senior
banker is found on a Kent
beach. Could the man’s death be
linked to the scandal engulfing
his employer, a global bank
created by the CIA to help track
terrorism financing? Kate Pendragon, a financial
analyst seconded to MI5, discovers that the bank
is close to collapse. Elsewhere, intelligence is
gathered on an Islamic terrorist cell intent on
triggering a nuclear catastrophe to rig the world’s
financial markets – rigged, it would appear, by the
Americans. Pendragon believes the intelligence
community on both sides of the Atlantic could
be falling for a sophisticated hoax. Only, no one is
listening to her.
About the author

Observer for 16 years and is currently its

to return with him to Australia
as his wife, she finds it very hard to say no. But
with rumours of war on the horizon, will she
have to choose between her head and her heart?
A story of love and loyalty set against a backdrop

and Lovers, Going Home to Liverpool, Kitty and Her

A Monstrous Commotion:
The Mysteries of Loch Ness (NF)
Read by Andrew Cullum
The Loch Ness Monster: a
creature that should have died
out with the dinosaurs, or a
legend built on hoaxes and
wishful thinking? Sir Peter Scott
was convinced that the Monster
existed. So were senior scientists at London’s
Natural History Museum and Chicago University;
they lost their jobs because they refused to
renounce their belief in the creature. For decades,
the scientific establishment was determined to
quash attempts to investigate Loch Ness – until the
journal Nature published an article by Peter Scott
featuring underwater photographs of the Monster.
Drawing extensively on new material, Gareth
Williams takes a wholly original look at what really
happened in Loch Ness.
About the author
Gareth Williams is Emeritus Professor at the
University of Bristol. He has written extensively on
the subject of science and scientific enquiry.

always compassionate understanding of human behaviour.
About the author

youngest witness in the Lady Chatterley trial in 1960. After writing two novels, she taught
in a London comprehensive school for 10 years and then had a distinguished career as a

JEM LESTER
Shtum
Read by David Thorpe
Ben Jewell has hit breaking point. His 10-year-old son, Jonah, has never spoken. So when
Ben and Jonah are forced to move in with Ben’s elderly father, three generations of
men – one who can’t talk; two who won’t – are thrown together. As Ben battles single
fatherhood, a string of well-meaning social workers and his own demons, he learns some

The End of the Cold War:

The dismantling of the Berlin

range of sources, he builds a picture of the two

surrounded the story of Klaus Fuchs as the Governments of Britain, the United States
and Russia tried to cover up the truth about his treachery. In this revealing account,
Mike Rossiter unravels the truth about his clandestine meetings, deadly secrets, family
entanglements and illicit love affairs, all set against the tumultuous years from the rise of
Hitler to the start of the Cold War.

ANDY SEED
All Teachers Bright and Beautiful (NF)
Read by David Fleeshman
Andy Seed is beginning his fifth year teaching at Cragthwaite Primary in the Yorkshire Dales,
and as always a new term is full of surprises. There’s a beautiful, but not terribly bright,
student on placement from the local teacher training college, and a particularly pushy
parent with a fine line in complaining. At home in Applesett, things aren’t all rosy either.
Barbara is forced to take a job to help pay the mortgage, which means finding someone to
look after Tom and Reuben. When two old friends move into the village it looks like the
problem has been solved, but it soon transpires that rural life is not for everyone.

LAURA THOMPSON
A Different Class of Murder (NF)
Read by Anna Bentinck
On 7 November 1974, a nanny named Sandra Rivett was bludgeoned to death in a
Belgravia basement. A second woman,Veronica, Countess of Lucan, was also attacked.
The man named in court as perpetrator of these crimes, Richard John Bingham, 7th Earl
of Lucan, disappeared in the early hours of the following morning. The case, solved in the
eyes of the law, has retained its fascination ever since. Laura Thompson narrates the story
that led up to that cataclysmic event, and draws on her considerable forensic skills to reexamine the possible truths behind one of postwar Britain’s most notorious murders.

A. N. WILSON
The Book of the People: How to Read the Bible (NF)
Read by Gareth Armstrong
A. N. Wilson has been thinking about the Bible, and reading it, since he read theology for
a year at university. Martin Luther King was ‘reading the Bible’ when he started the Civil
Rights movement. When Michelangelo painted the fresco cycles in the Sistine Chapel,
he was ‘reading the Bible’. In The Book of the People A. N. Wilson explores how readers
and thinkers have approached the Bible, and how it might be read today. Charting his
own relationship with the Bible over a lifetime of writing, Wilson argues that it remains
relevant even in a largely secular society, as a philosophical work, a work of literature and
a cultural touchstone.

The Special Dead
Read by Richard Burnip
Read by Sally Armstrong
Mark Howitt expects a fun, no-strings night of passion with Leila. But when he wakes up
in the early hours of the morning, he is horrified to stumble upon his former bed partner
dead and suspended from the ceiling, alongside 27 Barbie dolls. Rhona Macleod’s forensic
investigation of the scene reveals the cord used to hang Leila to be a cingulum, an artefact
used in the practise of Wicca, and sketches hidden in nine of the dolls suggest the dolls are
linked with nine men. As the investigation continues, it looks increasingly likely that other
wiccan witches will be targeted too ...

final twist, when Rex, and the last people to see her, must all account for their guilt.

Bitter Remedy
Read by Saul Reichlin
Commissario Alec Blume, on health leave, has retreated from Rome to central Italy. At
the Villa Romanelli he enrols on a natural remedies course conducted by a young woman
named Silvana. But far from recuperating, a feverish Blume becomes isolated and sluggish
with sickness. Increasingly ill-at-ease in the stifling environment, the dark history of the
crumbling villa and its once-magnificent gardens draws him in. And when a Romanian girl
who works for Silvana’s fiancé Niki asks for his help, Blume is dragged into the shadowy
case of a missing girl, and the horrors of the garden’s malign beauty.
In the quiet village of Carriveau,Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as
he heads for the Front. She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France, but invade
they do. When a German captain requisitions Vianne’s home, she and her daughter must
live with the enemy or lose everything.Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious 18-year-old
girl. She meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within
France. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking
her life time and again to save others. A heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the
resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a
novel for a lifetime.

Sweet Sunday

Turner Raines is Mr Heartbreak. Everybody leaves him. They walk out, they run away ...
they die. When his oldest friend Mel Kissing dies with an ice pick through his skull, Raines
picks up the thread and sets out to ask ‘who?’ and ‘why?’ But this is America in 1969 and
one death is just a drop in the ocean. The Vietnam War is ripping the country to pieces, the
Woodstock Festival is in full swing and Norman Mailer is standing as candidate for Mayor
of New York. Against this backdrop, Raines’ questions take him back to the childhood home
he left in Texas, back to the battered remains of his youth, and as his memory unravels,
America unravels with it.

man who, quite simply, fell from the sky. And, at the centre of it all, the figure who links the
past to the present – the irrepressible, unforgettable former Sergeant Punch. Ivor Punch

A recipe for life should be a simple thing: love and happiness, family, friends and a little
food … But life is rarely straightforward. Alice wants to make the most of life – after all,
she knows how fragile it can be – and knows she never feels more alive than when she’s
cooking. Babetta has spent a lifetime tending the garden of her tiny house on the Italian
coast, supplying food to feed a family now grown and gone. One summer these two
women are brought together in a crumbling Mediterranean villa, with the shared language
of food. There, under the heat of the Italian sun, or the shade of the pomegranate tree,
secrets will be spoken, fears and hopes shared. But life’s lessons are not learned easily.

natural choice for men of ambition. While Wellington is blooded in Ireland and Flanders,
Napoleon is caught up in the dramas of the French Revolution and war with Prussia,
Britain and Holland. None of this is enough to distract Wellington from his pursuit of Kitty
Pakenham or Napoleon from his future bride, Josephine, for these men throw themselves
into all aspects of life as enthusiastically as they rush to battle. A wonderful, multi-layered
introduction to an epic series.
