June 2016 - New Albany Housing Authority
Neighborhoods June 2016 A Publication of the New Albany Housing Authority Published and edited by Christal Stephenson Fresh Stop Markets are “pop up” farm-fresh food markets set up at local churches, housing authorities, and community centers in fresh food insecure neighborhoods. People in the community describe Fresh Stop Markets as welcoming and happy-like a family reunion where all five senses are engaged and there is lots of laughter, food, and fun! Our Fresh Stop Markets are open to everyone and created, led, and sustained by community leaders. Most Fresh Stop reserve 75% of all shares for those individuals and families identifying as having limited resources according to the WIC eligibility guidelines. Fresh Stop’s operate on a sliding scale based on income. The scale is as follows: Shares are $6 for families on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Shares are $12 for families who receive SNAP/EBT Food Stamps or others with limited resources according to the above guidelines. Shares are $25 for all others. Produce shares are order one to two weeks in advance and are full of the bounty of Kentuckiana’s seasonal produce. Each share is accompanied by a newsletter with recipes and information from our farmers. Call now (502) 509-6670 to join the Fresh Stop in your community and use your SNAP benefits, cash, or credit to purchase your bi-weekly “shares” of delicious fruits and vegetables. 21st Century Scholars If you are planning to purchase a home for the first time, this workshop is for you! Patrick B. is the Family Self-Sufficiency success for June 2016. Patrick is not one to brag about his achievements, but WE CAN! In 2012 Patrick came to the FSS office seeking support. Patrick was a brand new single Father and was out of work and really was unsure on where to start. He sat down with his FSS case worker and developed set goals. Patrick had worked odd jobs, he had worked as a cook, a laborer, and he even loaded trucks. Patrick knew that he had to do better because he was the main provider in his young daughter’s life. After joining the FSS program, Patrick became a regular person to stop in and say hi. He always attends the monthly meetings being offered. Patrick even attended a ZUMBA class that is a weekly event here at 300 Erni Avenue Gym. He was sometimes the only guy in the crowd but he was willing to do whatever it took and it has really paid off! Patrick wrote an essay and was awarded a full scholarship to attend a Certified Nurse Training with the American Red Cross. English is not his native language so all of the writing, testing, and quiz taking was a challenge for him. He never gave up! Patrick was helped by fellow students and passed his C.N.A. Certification. That was in June of 2012 and he has not looked back. He has continuously worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant ever since. Patrick still has goals and he is working toward a bigger and brighter future. His little girl, Patricia, is growing tall and doing well all because of Patrick’s commitment to success. Patrick has big plans to move in 2017. If you are wanting to set goals, get a good job and enjoy the supports FSS has to offer call today!
