FROM THE RABBI’S DESK
Imagine the
following scene
playing out on
C-SPAN: On
a specific day
of the year,
the Supreme
Court justices
together with
the members of
Congress take
copies of the
United States
Constitution and
dance around
the floor of
the House of
Representatives
while singing,
clapping and
lifting the law
books high in the
air. With each circuit of those carrying
the Constitution, the others lean in to
affectionately kiss the books as they pass
by. This entire scenario seems impossible
and the very suggestion of this scene is
ludicrous.
Don’t Just
Read the
Book, Dance
with It
And yet, this is exactly what we do on
Simchas Torah in Shuls around the world.
We collect all the Torahs from around
the shul, sing and dance in a spirited
fashion and kiss each Torah as it passes us
by. What explains our seemingly bizarre
behavior, especially in contrast with the
attitude and approach every other legal
system and religion brings to their law
books?
Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks writes
so beautifully:
“A Torah scroll is the nearest thing
Judaism has to a holy object. Still written
today as it was thousands of years ago
— on parchment, using a quill, by a
master-scribe — it is our most cherished
possession. We stand in its presence as if it
were a king. We dance with it as if it were
a bride. We kiss it as if it were a friend.
If, God forbid, one is damaged beyond
repair, we mourn it as if it were a member
of the family.
The Koran calls Jews a “people of the
book,” but this is an understatement. We
are a people only because of the book.
It is our constitution as a holy nation
under the sovereignty of God. It is God’s
love letter to the children of Israel. We
study it incessantly. We read it in the
Page 2
synagogue each week, completing it in a
year. During the long centuries of Jewish
exile, it was our ancestors’ memory of
the past and hope for the future. It was,
said the German poet Heinrich Heine,
the “portable homeland” of the Jew.
Some Christians have found it hard to
understand the Jewish love of law. To
them it sometimes seems like an obsession
with detail, the “letter” rather than the
‘spirit.’”
We live in a world of great darkness in
which people are desperately searching
for meaning, purpose, happiness, joy,
direction, fulfillment, family values,
and more. While so much of the world
struggles, we are amazingly blessed,
fortunate and privileged to be charged by
the ideals, values and laws of the Torah
that truly provides a prescription for a
meaningful life. It is not ours alone and
we have no monopoly on its message. Etz
chaim hi, lamachazikim bah, it is a tree of
life for all those who hold on to it.
As we close in on seven long and intensive
weeks that began with the first of Elul
and concludes with Simchas Torah,
many of us feel burnt out, tired, and
sick of cooking, eating, long davening
and yes, even preparing and listening to
sermons and classes. It is no coincidence
that exactly when we begin to feel
Jewish holidays and observant life are
burdensome and difficult that we observe
Simchas Torah and remember how
fortunate and blessed we are to have
Torah and the true simcha it brings.
Rabbi Sacks writes elsewhere:
“If you want to understand Jews and
Judaism, think of Simchat Torah. It’s the
only festival that is the pure creation of
the Jewish People. All the others were
either written in the Torah or came about
through historical events, like Purim and
Hanukkah. Not so Simchat Torah, which
isn’t mentioned in the Torah, not even in
the Talmud. It appeared for the first time
in the early middle ages.
Now you might have thought that with
all their dispersion and persecution Jews
would have created a fast, but they didn’t.
They created a day of pure joy. And joy in
what? In the Torah, a book of law…If you
want to understand Jews and Judaism,
think of Simchat Torah and we realise that
Judaism is really a love story: the story of
the love of a people for a book, the book
with which we dance with on Simchat
Torah as if it were a bride.”
Next week, when Simchas Torah ends,
let’s not put our bride away in a closet or
Ark. Let’s continue to get to know her,
to fall in love with her, to celebrate our
relationship with her and to dance with
her throughout the year. Now is the time
to renew our commitment to study and
celebrate Torah. There is no shortage of
opportunities at BRS.
You will shortly be receiving our
incredible new Community and Adult
Education Brochure filled with classes,
programs, events and speakers on diverse
topics for diverse audiences. The Dr.
Yitzchak Belizon z”l Beis Medrash
and the Women’s Midrasha have more
offerings and learning opportunities than
ever. I encourage you to not just peruse
the brochure, but to sit down with a
pen and go through it carefully. Circle
the classes you are pledging to attend
and the learning opportunities you will
incorporate into your life this year. Put
them on your calendar and set alerts
to remind you of the daily or weekly
commitment or the special event you
don’t want to miss.
As we head into the final stretch of this
marathon season, I wish you a Chag
Sameach and a year filled with simchas
Torah, the joy of Torah and simchas
ha’chayim, the joy of life.

MAIN MINYAN GALA KIDDUSH
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
“I did not find this world
desolate when I entered it.
My ancestors planted for me
before I was born. So do I
choose to plant for those
who will come after me.”
We are looking forward to another year of great Kiddushim and the camaraderie
it brings. As the cost of a private Kiddush has become prohibitive, the monthly
Gala Kiddush affords those with a Simcha to share that Simcha at an affordable
price with the entire BRS community. Please consider joining our growing list of
sponsors to ensure the Kiddushim continue.
The Gala Kiddushim for this year are tentatively scheduled as follows:

BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT
In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,”
we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of
individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious,
political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where
all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed,
members are required to comport themselves in a manner which
reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness.
“Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful
dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a
“safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose
of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh
language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom
one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our
Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior.
In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is
consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the
value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of
heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate
will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate
views, as do we.
Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with
kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong,
vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained.
Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good
standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.
In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and
create an even better community.
• Different families are going to make a variety of educational choices for their children. This must not lead to separation; we should strive
to find commonality with our fellow members.
• When you Daven, please be conscious of the person next to you and Daven in a voice you can hear, but won't disturb your neighbor.
All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email
us at office@BRSonline.org”

LIFE CYCLE
Simcha Freedman Ami Harow While the high holidays are over, the synagogue will be
extremely busy over the coming weeks with the Sukkot
holiday. We strongly encourage everyone to remain
vigilant during this festive time. If you see any suspicious
activity on the synagogue campus, please report it to the BRS staff or the
security team members immediately.
Additionally, many of the BRS members will be traveling during the
sukkot holiday. Please be aware of your surroundings and take necessary
precautions wherever your travels may take you.
If you are ready to help enhance the security of our community, please
consider joining the security team. Trainings for new and existing recruits
will recommence following the end of the upcoming holidays.
The Security Committee wishes you and your family a joyous Sukkot.

ISRAEL UPDATE
SOCIAL ACTION
In a new attempt to facilitate an economic boycott of Israel, the UN’s Commissioner on Human Rights, Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid AlHussein of Jordan, is demanding a blacklist of Israeli and international companies doing business in the West Bank, Golan, and eastern
Jerusalem. From Honest Reporting: Ties which can qualify a business for the Black List include those with any branches in the
territories. These include, for example, banks which could be boycotted by the UN under the criteria set out by Al-Hussein even if
its main operation centers are not situated in the West Bank or the Golan Heights. Officials from the Israeli Foreign Ministry have
said that that the implementation of the resolution could result in an economic disaster for the State of Israel since Israeli businesses
operating outside Israel will be threatened with consumer boycotts. Furthermore, international corporations operating in Israel will be
forced to choose between having their products labelled by the UN or activity in large parts of Israel.

Sukkot Thought
While the Beit ha-Mikdash stood, only those in its vicinity took a
lulav and etrog all seven days; everybody else only did so on the first
day of Yom Tov. After the hurban, R. Yohanan ben Zakkai
established that everybody, regardless of where they live, take a
lulav and etrog all seven days as a means of remembering the
Mikdash.
The Midrash writes that the lulav and etrog are considered to be
symbols of having emerged victorious from battle. We are proud
to have made it through Yom ha-Kippurim and celebrate our newly
cleansed spiritual state.
While this status cannot last forever, in the four days between Yom
ha-Kippurim and Sukkot we are busy taking care building sukkot and
purchasing and arranging the lulav and etrog. It’s so all
encompassing that we practically don’t really have any time to do
violate any aveirot. Hatam Sofer explains that even days later, on the
first day of Sukkot, we are still able to be proud of our victory and
new spiritual status. After a full day of Yom Tov however, we
cannot be so sure of ourselves anymore and therefore, the mitzvah
of lulav and etrog no longer applies.
Those celebrating Sukkot in Yerushalayim however, are directly in
Hashem’s presence for the entire holiday and experience it on a
spiritually exalted state. They can therefore be fully confident that
no sin will befall them during their sojourn in Hashem’s city and
can perform the mitzvah of lulav and etrog for all seven days.
Rabbi David Shabtai, MD
Rabbi, Sephardic Minyan
rds@BRSonline.org
Page 8
In our post-hurban world, we indeed celebrate with the lulav for
seven days. But not because we are confident in our spirituality,
but rather with no centralized source of spiritual inspiration, we
must strive to have those experiences wherever we may live.

Prayer 101 – 5 Steps to a New You!
7:00pm - 8:00pm
There are four primary misconceptions that prevent us from effectively communicating with our Creator through prayer.
It feels like we are talking to a wall. Since we don’t actually see God or sense Him with any of our five senses, how can we have
a
conversation with Him? A one-way dialogue is awkward at best; at worst a little crazy. It makes no sense to pray to God if He knows our needs.
He’ll either give us what we want if we need it, or He won’t if we don’t. How can prayer change His mind? God doesn’t seem to answer our prayers.
Sometimes we pray for an ill person and he dies anyway. Or we pray for years to find a soul-mate or to have children and our requests go unanswered. So why keep
trying? Standardized prayer is a drag. How can you have a natural conversation with someone if you don’t get to decide what to say and when to say it? That’s not called
communication.
This series will explore each of these questions and see how a small change in perspective can make all the difference.
November 3, 2016
1.
Introduction to Prayer
This class will serve an introduction to the subject of Jewish prayer. What is Prayer? Where did prayer come from? What are some of the basic skills? We will open the
siddur and demonstrate how prayer can help us unlock the secret to becoming the individuals that we know we are meant to be.
November 10, 2016
2.
The Morning Blessings Stretch
What’s with Judaism and all these blessings? Does G-d really need my blessing? Who is blessing who? This class will demonstrate how every blessing is not only
about G-d, but has more to do with each of us that we ever could have imagined.
November 17, 2016
3.
Warming up with Kriat Shema
The Shema is a declaration of faith, a pledge of allegiance to One God. It is said upon arising in the morning and upon going to sleep at night. It is said when praising God
and when beseeching Him. It is the first prayer that a Jewish child is taught to say. It is the last words a Jew says prior to death. What makes this prayer so special?
December 8, 2016
4.
Stand Up and Get Moving
We’ve been preparing and working really hard to get to this point of the prayer service. Now that we have spent time stretching and
warming up its time to have a personal conversation with G-d. But what do I say? What if I have a personal request, where can I insert it?
How can I make the most out of this special moment.
December 15, 2016
5.
Cool Down and Make it a Great Day
Just when you think that it’s over, there is one more critical aspect to the service. Unfortunately it’s one of the most neglected pieces
and a reason why many people don’t get any substantial results. Join us as we conclude the series and solidify all of the lessons we
learned to ensure that you can become a new you.

KOL HANEARIM TALLIT ORDER FORM
It is with great pride and excitement that that Boca Raton Synagogue is the Guinness World Record holder for
the world’s largest Tallit. The Tallit is made of 49 Tallitot! It is the size of a half basketball court. It can hold
700 children comfortably beneath it.
Kol Hanearim is a time to celebrate our children and grandchildren’s Torah learning. We hope everyone
in the community will use this as an opportunity to have their children and grandchildren and even great
grandchildren’s names added to this Tallit. The children may even be able to look up and find their name when
they all come together under the Tallit on Simchat Torah.
The cost to have a name embroidered on the Tallit is $4 per letter. All names will be embroidered in English
and will be spelled the same way they are submitted on the form below. If you have any questions, please
contact Cherelle in the Shul office at 561-394-0394.
The deadline to submit your form to the Shul office with payment is Friday, June 30, 2017.

We are especially grateful to Dr. Ashi & Chava Weisstuch for their sponsorship of the center of our Kol Hane’arim
Tallit. The Weisstuchs have sponsored the Tallit in loving memory of her beloved father, Henry Kamioner.
We would also like to thank our corner sponsors Moshe & Channi Bertram, Dr. Robert and Judith Bruckstein,
Saul & Bobbie Friedman, and Dr. Merv and Elaine Jacobs.
*If you are adding names to an already existing family box, you have the option of either paying
to have all of the names redone so they appear on one box or you can just pay for the additional
names you would like added, and we will have it placed under the currently existing family box.

Pillar Society
Seven years ago, Boca Raton Synagogue launched the Pillar
Society for those members that wish to help our synagogue
continue to offer the highest possible level of educational,
religious, and social programming to our community. The
Pillar Society provides a backbone to our community, and your
commitment enables the Shul to provide for the needs of all our
members, regardless of their ability to pay.
Boca Raton Synagogue would like to thank the families that have
already committed to the 2016/2017 Pillar Society.
We appeal to you and others to become members of The Pillar
Society – to be the leaders of Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut
Chasadim in our community.
