Dear Friends, www www.ZenMarketingInc.com .ZenMarketingInc.com Welcome to the 3rd annual Red Shoe Luncheon & Fashion Show in Hunterdon County! We’re excited to have you join us once again as we continue our mission of building a national network of chapters, bringing women together for a common cause and establishing a platform that focuses on awareness of domestic abuse. The Red Shoe is a special day to celebrate all of our successes while giving back to our community and providing much needed support to those in need. BW NICE was created to help women balance business with charitable outreach. At all of our meetings and events, we help women gain meaningful business connections, learn new ways to succeed, and find reinforcement for positive living. Proceeds from today’s event will go to our charity partner, SAFE in Hunterdon, a not-for-profit agency dedicated to serving victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse and BW NICE, Inc. Please read more about SAFE on page 6. On behalf of the entire board, I wish you a fabulous day of networking, dining, shopping and most of all, fun! We look forward to your continued participation and support of BW NICE. 24 1 Our Mission BW NICE, Business Women Networking Involving Charity & Education, provides women at all stages of business and personal life with support, education and resources. We see value in the balance of business and charitable outreach. We bring women together to gain meaningful business connections, learn new way to succeed, and foster an empowering environment. Each BW NICE chapter raises funds and awareness supporting a local organization in the fight against domestic violence. 2 More than 400 business women in Central Jersey have discovered a favorite recipe for networking: Start with friendship, stir in business, and mix with a dollop of charity. That’s the success formula of BW NICE — Business Women Networking Involving Charity and Education. Members describe the BW NICE experience as motivating and rewarding, both professionally and personally. As we come together in networking and education, we bring our collective skills and interests to the aid of women in distressed circumstances, lifting them up and cheering them on to success. We’ve gotten where we are through the support of those around us, and that’s what we want to do for our members and others in our community. At monthly breakfast meetings, attendees follow a typical networking agenda: 30-second business pitches, followed by a 15-minute educational talk. The difference is the charitable connection. BW NICE, Hunterdon County Chapter, supports SAFE in Hunterdon (see page 8) by making regular in-kind donations at monthly meetings and by holding the annual charity event, The Red Shoe. BW NICE does not limit the group to one person per profession. We welcome all women in business and our members include doctors, lawyers, corporate and small business owners, job seekers, homemakers with hobby businesses and entrepreneurs of all stripes. Meetings in Hunterdon County are held the second Wednesday of every month at Mountain View Chalet, 154 Route 173, in Asbury. Registration and networking start at 8:30 a.m. and the meeting is 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. For details, visit www.bwnice.org or e-mail us at info@bwnice.org. Education – We share best practices and methods for building a successful business and career. BW NICE brings in speakers to offer instruction, motivation and encouragement to all of our attendees. Charity – BW NICE brings together its collective talents to help benefit other women in the community. Each BW NICE chapter raises funds and awareness supporting a local organization in the fight against domestic violence. Is BW NICE looking for business and corporate sponsors? Yes. We actively pursue partnerships within the local business community. By teaming with us, companies find business associates and sponsor outreach work. Dear Red Shoe Sponsors and Supporters, On behalf of the SAFE in Hunterdon Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers, and most of all, our survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and sexual abuse, thank you for supporting our prevention, crisis intervention, legal advocacy, safe housing, and counseling services made available to children, teens and adults. The Red Shoe Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show is an invitation to all strong, empowered, successful women to step up and out on behalf of those in need of safety, shelter, advocacy, and support. Your positive energy, burning desire to help, and outrage at the very existence of this public health issue are what is needed to change the lives of those suffering in pain, silence, and fear. It is only when empowered people mobilize to empower others that positive change will undoubtedly occur and the community will become truly SAFE in Hunterdon. Linda Luce Osterman Red Shoe Volunteer ,# '% 18 7 Melissa Harrison Woman of theYear 2 • 0 • 1 • 4 “Melissa is a great example of “grace under pressure,” serving as a superb role model for people of all ages.” – Marguerite York Melissa Harrison owns and operates a delightful, warm and inviting salon in Milford, NJ, while constantly striving to promote the town of Milford. As president of the Milford Merchants Association (MMA), a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the economical and cultural growth of Milford, she directs a number of community projects designed to thank Milford residents and the surrounding communities for supporting the businesses throughout the year. These include Milford ALIVE, Milford Garden Tour, Milford Halloween Parade and Christmas in Milford. Milford ALIVE began as a small town fall festival and has developed into a large music and arts festival. Melissa devotes hundreds of hours each year to community building activities. Other volunteer efforts include hair cutting fundraisers for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and participating in the Del-Val Employment Transition program, which offers special needs students work to prepare them for life after high school. In tough economic times, Melissa worked diligently to raise the town’s profile. Over the last decade, Milford has weathered the closing of the paper mill, a number of floods, extensive road work and a bridge closing diverting traffic away from the 8 center of town. While these stresses placed on the small town led some to believe the town was dying, others believe it was Melissa’s vigorous efforts that brought the community together and brought people back into this charming town. Melissa additionally focuses efforts on beautifying Milford, overseeing the flowers and trees that are hung and planted and helping to organize the volunteers necessary to care for the plantings. She has attended town council meetings, requesting that dilapidated or neglected properties are addressed. Milford’s future includes being the first town in the area to have a town wide mobile app – thanks to Ms. Harrison working with an app developer. This app would showcase not only the town businesses, but the school, youth sports leagues, churches, library, historical society and local government. Melissa grew up in Frenchtown, NJ and resides in Hellertown, PA with her husband Gary Harrison and son Bryce. BW NICE is thrilled to honor Melissa Harrison as the 2014 Business Woman of the Year. Melissa’s devotion to the town of Milford is something to be celebrated! 17 We celebrate Melissa Harrison by way of sharing… President/CEO “Melissa is a warm, caring and compassionate person who gives so much of her time to make the community of Milford a much better place to raise children and grow businesses.” – Dawn Van Doren, Global Healthcare Management, US Healthcare Supply “Melissa taught me to ‘think local’ first and to appreciate all we have right here in Milford. But more importantly, she has inspired optimism in me and the belief that the work of a few people, with skillful guidance, can make a difference.” – Jennifer Locke, Milford Public Library “…I get tired just watching her in action…I just don’t know how she does it but she makes me want to step in and do more.” – Dr. Lynn D’Oria, Chiropractor 16 9 OLD WI CK ANI MAL HOSPI TAL ANNA OWREN FAYNE, VMD JANISSE M CAILLES, VMD JOHN HEIDGERD, VMD 908.439.2470 130 OLDWICK ROAD, WHITEHOUSE STATION, NJ www.oldwickanimalhospital.com THE WORK-FAMILY CONNECTION, INC.
