Tropical Gardens of
Welcome
I first visited Hawai’i in 1956 & fell in love
with this tropical paradise. I saw my first Bird
of Paradise (strelitzia), hibiscus & frangipani…
I was just 10 years old! Since then I’ve visited
many times & continued my love affair with this
enchanting, magical place.
Hanalei with its quaint village people & towering
cliffs so loved by Peter, Paul & Mary’s Puff the
Magic Dragon. We’ll explore all my favourite
spots: the mountain of Bali Hai, the dramatic
Waimea Canyon, the landscapes of the Limahuli
People & the gardens in lush waterfall carved
valleys of Kaua’i.We will see rare gingers, vanilla
beans, exotic orchids & fragrant tuberose. With
three days on Kaua’i & five relaxing days in
Honolulu’s famous Royal Hawaiian Pink Palace
Hotel right on Waikiki Beach,
this holiday is a dream come
true.

facilities of this resort that re-creates the
glamour of Hawaii 1920’s & 1930’s in its
beautiful location on the beach at Poipu.

Day 2 - thu 20 jun 13 (B)
Morning visit to Allerton Gardens (Lawai
Kai) where Queen Emma, wife of King
Kamehameha IV chose to build her
garden estate. She named her garden
retreat Lawai Kai which means ‘Garden
By The Sea’, & she carefully introduced
exotic species into the natural landscape,
including bougainvillea & Moreton Bay
fig. Between 1938 & 1989 Robert &
John Allerton introduced more plants
from around the world, along with
design features such as water channels,
cascades, pools & waterfalls, latticed
pavilions & European sculpture. It’s
eclectic in design & dazzling in botanical
diversity.
Nearby is Limahuli Garden & Preserve,
set in a lush tropical valley surrounded by
towering peaks sculpted by eons of wind
& rain, Limahuli Garden offers visions
of natural beauty & intriguing antiquity.
Walk through lava rock terraces built by
Limahuli’s early inhabitants & see the
taro that still thrives there.

Learn about the native plants of Hawai‘i,
the plants brought to the islands by
voyaging Polynesians, & the flowers
& fruits introduced during Hawaii’s
plantation era. Find enchantment in
legends of the Valley & the ancient rocks
that watch over it.
Limahuli Garden was selected by the
American Horticultural Society as the
best natural botanical garden in the
United States, having demonstrated the
best sound environmental practices of
water, soil, & rare plant conservation in
an overall garden design.
Grand Hyatt Resort & Spa, Kaua’i
Day 3 - fri 21 jun 13 Kaua’i
(B)
Scenic drive around the island today
including a visit to Smith’s Tropical
Paradise, a 30 acre botanical & cultural
garden located on the east side of
Kaua’i, known as ‘The Coconut Coast’
within the Wailua Marina State Park.
Visit Hanalei on Kaua’i’s scenic north
shore. Discover taro that grows in
flooded fields & used to make poi, a
Hawaiian staple starch that you can taste
at any luau. Stop for lunch & some free
time in Hanalei town & visit the famous
pier on Hanalei Bay. You can get a good
view of this emerald quilt of taro farms
from the Hanalei Valley Lookout.

Day 4 - sat 22 jun 13 Kaua’i - Honolulu
(B)
Over to the western side of Kaua’i this
morning to visit Waimea Canyon, the
largest canyon in the Pacific & a dramatic
sight. The canyon measures 10 miles
long, 1 mile wide, & more than 3,500feet deep. It was carved thousands of
years ago by rivers & floods that flowed
from Mount Waialeale’s summit. The
lines in the canyon walls depict different
volcanic eruptions & lava flows that have
occurred over the centuries. The elevation
makes the air 10-15 degrees cooler than
in the valley & by afternoon many areas
are often shrouded in clouds.
Afternoon flight to Honolulu. Check in
to The Royal Hawaiian (The Pink Palace)
right on the beach at Waikiki. This
hotel has remained an icon of luxury &
romance for over a century, a Waikiki
landmark recognised around the world.
lawai’a (tending of fishing tools). The
night continues with the sound of a pu
(conch) calling guests to feast, where
a storyteller shares the significance
of lei giving, the ocean, & taro while
guests dine on exquisite pupu (hors
d’oeuvres). After dinner, the Helumoa
story unfolds—a dramatic performance,
including hula & song, commemorates
ancient islanders’ rich history & culture
through a timeline of the historic Royal
Hawaiian to the contemporary style of
Hawaiian music & dance.
