Welcome to the 16th Annual
Jazz in the Pines
On behalf of the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation and the
students of Idyllwild Arts who will benefit directly with scholarship
funds from the 16th-annual Jazz in the Pines festival, I would like
to welcome you.
Since its inception during the summer of 1994, Jazz in the Pines
has been produced with the support of more than 250 volunteers,
dozens of community organizations and our sponsors who have
all understood the value of keeping the American art form of Jazz
alive.
The weekend festivities begin with the annual Patron’s Dinner
Dance on Friday, Aug. 28, with entertainment by the incomparable
Yve Evans, Bob Boss and many more surprises from Marshall
Hawkins. Tickets for this incredible evening are $235 and include
admission to both days of the festival, special Patron’s seating and
parking. Patrons will be pampered with incredible gourmet food,
fine wine, elaborate gift bags and much more.
This year we are continuing to refine areas of the festival, including a wider selection of premium wines available in the wine-tasting
area, a vast array of artist choices in our partnered CD booth and
more unique offerings of handmade merchandise at any one of our
65 vendor booths than ever before. Be sure to purchase a Jazz in the
Pines commemorative glass, T-shirt or tote bag.
Now in its third year, the popular Saturday night Barbecue and
Jam Session costs only $25 and is held in the Idyllwild Arts Nelson
Dining Hall. Seating is limited, so purchase your tickets in advance.
Listen to the cool sounds of Marshall Hawkins & Friends, as well
as Sandii Castleberry, Paul Carman and Bill Saitta.
The Associates and the Jazz committee are pleased to present a
weekend of many of greatest jazz musicians in the music industry
today. On Saturday, Aug. 29, saxophonist Mindi Abair and on

Where do you go from no. 1?
If
you are singer, songwriter
and saxophonist Mindi
Abair — whose 2006 release “Life
Less Ordinary” debuted at the
top of Billboard’s contemporary
jazz chart — you step out of your
comfort zone, reach deep inside,
follow your heart, write a bunch
of killer songs showcasing your
dynamic vocals like never before
and, yes, aim for the “Stars.”
With the highly anticipated
release of Abair’s aptly titled
debut — which her company, 23

a division of the Concord Music

the pop scene with gale force. She
adds a refreshingly unique voice

crossover artists who are, like
her, powerful instrumentalists
as well as thought-provoking
singer/songwriters.

a genre-busting, breathtaking
combination of contemporary

It will be love at first listen.”
Helping Abair and her collaborator/producer Matthew Hager
realize her creative and fearless
musical vision is a choice group
of stalwarts from the pop world:
keyboardist Ricky Peterson (John
Mayer, Prince), drummer Abe

Sting) and cellist Richard Dodd,
(Faith Hill, Foo Fighters).
Already a groundbreaking star
in the contemporary jazz world,
Abair has had three no.1 hit
singles on the Radio & Records

named it the no. 1 most played

in the U.S. and abroad. Each week, she features cutting-edge music by artists such as Zero 7, Air, Thievery
Corporation, and remixes of classic jazz artists such as
Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.
Abair established herself as a major presence in the
pop world in the mid-1990s when she toured as a singer
and sax player with Adam Sandler. She’s been on the road
with Mandy Moore, was hand-picked by Josh Groban as
his opening act on his sold-out fall tour in 2004, and
even performed with Duran Duran for its U.S. comeback
tour.
Abair’s ultimate goal on “Stars” is to bring light to the
darkness, an unapologetic, optimistic sense of hope and
idealism. Case in point: the lilting folk/pop tune “Change”
reminds us that change is the one thing we can count
on, and also the concept that can bring us all together.
“Audiences today are more open than ever to artists
who play instruments, write their own songs and have
something meaningful to say,” Abair says. “While I was
writing the songs for ‘Stars,’ I felt very optimistic, expressing a lot of joy and hope. We need that spirit to take hold
of us today, and I am excited about expressing these ideas
through songs that are meaningful to me and reflective
of my journey and the many roads I’ve taken. I’m going
for broke, making the record I’ve always wanted to make
with songs that honestly portray my innermost feelings
about my own life and the world around me.”

E. Family Project Takes Over Sunday
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
On
Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, percussionists Sheila E. and her father Pete
Escovedo will lead the E. Family Project onto
the stage to wrap up the 16th-annual Jazz in
the Pines.
Pete, the patriarch, has been a dominant link
between jazz and Latin jazz for nearly 50 years.
The E. Family Project is a collaboration among
the Escovedo family, led by Pete and Sheila E. The
family’s talents cross cultural and musical barriers
each time they perform their own unique brand
of Latin jazz.
With their enthusiasm and energy, no one will
feel tired after two days of inspired jazz. Feet and
hands will be tappin’ and clappin’ to Latin, pop
and funky jazz rhythms, says Sheila.
During the 1970s, Pete and brother Coke
formed Azteca and toured the country with Stevie
Wonder and The Temptations.
Later that decade, Pete played and toured with Carlos
Santana. During this period, he and Sheila began recording together.
Sheila was obviously influenced by her father. By age
5, she knew she was going to be a percussionist after
experiencing the thrill of playing her own solo onstage
with thousands watching and applauding.
In 1983, Sheila caught the attention of Prince and
changed her name to Sheila E., and Prince helped her
record her first solo album, “The Glamorous Life.”
From dreams of becoming an Olympian runner, Sheila
has become a renowned percussionist.
At age 15, music began to replace running as her focus
and ambition. She played the congas during one of her
father’s tours and never had such an experience.
Part of that experience was feeling a connection with her
whole family — music is in her genes. Pete, a long-time
jazz musician, formed Azteca with his brother, Coke. This
was after they toured with guitarist Carlos Santana.
Their father, Sheila’s grandfather, was a guitarist and
singer. And her mother sang, too.
“This was the family environment,” she said. “My
brother plays percussion, my younger brother plays the
guitar. We always performed at family functions.”
Music wasn’t the only skill her father taught Sheila.
He also ingrained his attitude of sharing and giving back
some of what they have that is special.
“Growing up, Dad took us to many different facilities.
People were worse off than we were, he’d say,” she said.
“It didn’t matter that we didn’t have money, these kids
didn’t have two parents.”
So, just as important to her is The Elevate Hope
Foundation, a charity she co-founded and co-chairs. It
provides a means for her to share and return her success
to abused and abandoned children.
“There are so many kids who need our help,” she says,
“And we’re trying to help them get their lives together by
building their confidence through music and the arts ...
I believe we are here to help people in this lifetime. We
must give something of ourselves to truly live.”
Through the foundation, Sheila and her
business manager, Lynn Mabry, its other cofounder, have assisted schools such as Vista
Del Mar.
With foundation support, a spare room was
gutted and turned into a modern music facility
complete with computers and software such as
Garage Band to compose and write music.
“It’s amazing how they are responding. I
wish we could do more,” she added. “People
say the right thing, but getting donations has
been challenging.” The Elevate Hope Web site
is www.elevatehope.org.
This will be the Escovedos’ first appearance
at the festival and they are excited about playing a venue with the reputation Idyllwild has
built.
“I love to perform, but when I found out
where Idyllwild was I was more excited,” Sheila
replied to why they chose the jazz fest. “A
couple of friends have been there and said ‘It’s
beautiful, you won’t want to leave.’ I’m looking forward
to it.”
In addition to Pete and Sheila E., first-born son Juan
Escovedo and youngest son Peter Michael are part of this
group. “Depending on who’s around, there may be some
surprise guests,” Sheila said. “My nieces and nephews
perform, too.”
In addition to her other talents, Sheila has designed a
new line of percussion instruments for kids, “The Sheila
E. Player’s Series,” with Kaman Music’s toca percussion
instruments.

Henry Franklin Closes Jazz Day, Opens Hearts
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
Jazz
bassist Henry Franklin, born in Los Angeles, now makes his home in Perris.
Franklin’s trip to Idyllwild for the
16th-annual Jazz in the Pines will be
brief, but his music, his performance,
his quartet will continue on and on
beyond the final plucked string, last
breath or tickled key.
Franklin and his friends, Azar
Lawrence, tenor sax, Theo Saunders,
piano, and Ramon Banda on drums,
performed at the 2008 Jazz in the
Pines. They began about the same
time and concurrent with the Amphitheatre headliner.
Listening to them play was a musical education. They challenged each
other, chasing one another up and
down the scale. They were so smooth
the improvisation was undetectable.
As the set began, about 15 people
were in the Stephens Recital Hall (The Barn). As they
played, nearly 90 minutes without one sheet of music,
a few more people came and sat waiting for the shuttle
bus.
“We play together all the time; there is no need for
music,” Franklin said. “We’re like a brotherhood.”
As people left the Amphitheatre to
catch the bus, more stopped and sat.
Eventually, by 5:30 p.m., well after the
headliner’s performance ended, the
Stephens Recital Hall was filled and
people were standing and listening
outside. The shuttle could wait; the
pleasure was ephemeral, the memories
forever.
The quartet captivated, captured
and enraptured a jazz audience as
tightly as I have ever seen at the
jazz fest.
“I’ve been there about five times,”
Franklin said. “We try to play with a
lot of energy and this is where you
come to hear the ‘real deal’ jazz.”
Stephens Recital Hall is just fine
with Franklin. He describes it as a
“great, great place to play.”
Franklin, still under age 60, began
playing at a young age. His father,
Sammy Franklin, was an early jazz
trumpeter and bandleader, and Sammy’s son began on the clarinet and
piano. Eventually Franklin found a bass, and his love of
music and creativity flourished.
Franklin, like so many of the festival performers, is here
because of festival Musical Director Marshall Hawkins.
They met in a club in Washington, D.C., in the very early
1960s. But the two bass players have never found a duet
they could both play.
A “Bebopper” or traditional jazz player is how Franklin characterizes his music. He has worked with Harold
Land and Hampton Hawes. He’s played with Count Basie,
Ornette Coleman, Billy Higgins and others, most notably
Hugh Masekela.
Together they collaborated and made “Grazing in the
Grass,” a gold record. Several years later, he repeated the
feat, this time with Stevie Wonder on “The Secret Life of
Plants.”
When asked his opinion of the debate between jazz
and smooth jazz, he replied there is no debate.
“There’s real jazz and all the other stuff is like R&B,”
Franklin declared. “You got a back beat. It’s just a label
of some kind on it.”
Franklin still tours and leaves Sept. 2 for a European
tour. The only problem with this gig is airport security.
He cannot carry his bass through all the checkpoints
and onboard the flight. He has to rely on instruments
available at his venues.
Franklin and his brotherhood will be at the Stephens
Recital Hall from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.

High Priest of Jazz Brings Sax Tucker’s Style
to Idyllwild
In
By J.P. Crumrine
News Editor
Azar
Lawrence is a jazz superstar. He and his saxophone will be at the 16th-annual Jazz in
the Pines festival at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug.
30, performing with the Henry Franklin
Quartet in the Stephens Recital Hall.
Last year was Lawrence’s first time playing at the local festival. Those who heard
his and Franklin’s performance enjoyed
one of the finest entertainments on the
program. The longer they played, the crowd
swelled as though Lawrence’s every breath
was filling a balloon.
Eventually, when the music ended, the dozens standing
outside the Stephens applauded and even those patrons
waiting for a shuttle ride to their cars begged for more
jazz.
Lawrence has studied and reveres famed jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, but he has never played with him.
He has played with both McCoy Tyner, for more than
five years, and Elvin Jones for several more. Tyner was
Coltrane’s pianist and Jones was “Trane’s” drummer.
His devotion and Coltrane’s style are easily apparent
on the CD, which Edwin Bayard and Lawrence recorded,
“Legacy and Music of John Coltrane.”
“[Jazz] is my life and has been for more than 35
years,” Lawrence said when asked what it means to him,
“a big part of my life since graduating high school. I’ve
dedicated my life to it.”
His talent was neither masked nor mistaken even in
his youth. At age 19, he was a member of Tyner’s band.
Since then, he has always felt that jazz evokes
important values of self and uplifts the listener.
Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme,” considered a
classic, is Lawrence’s example of how music
and the spirit moderate the other.
“They lift themselves and you closer to
higher values in life,” he said.
While Lawrence is dedicated to jazz, he
likes and enjoys all genres of music. He has
composed songs for Earth, Wind and Fire, for
example. But he acknowledges the central role
of jazz and at times feels it is being eclipsed
by other music.
“A lot of people prefer playing R&B. You’ll
hear R&B and pop musicians working the jazz festivals,
but you don’t hear jazz at the R&B,” he lamented. “You
learn it’s all good music.
“I don’t look down at any music. Who am I to do
that,” he said. “We all want to get music to the people
to enjoy.”
Lawrence has produced and recorded dozens of albums
in his career. While he has spent hundreds of hours
in the studio, he says live concerts are still his favorite
venue. His concerts have been increasing in the past six
months.
“I’m trying to do my part to help all of us feel good,”
he said. Like many great musicians, Lawrence recognizes
how music can affect the soul and change our emotions.
“Music is the language that helps heal us with time and
thoughts,” he said. “It inspires that type of thinking.”

and Latin America. This wanderlust is distinctive in the
music she chooses today with jazz-based rhythms and
music of Brazil, France, Italy, Latin America, Japan and
the U.S.
Give a listen and come with her on a journey that
evokes images of sounds, generations and lands both
distant and in our own backyard.

Sinatra Helped Launch
Pat Rizzo’s Career
Jazz
i n
the
Pines, the renowned
Idyllwild jazz festival, has become
an annual event for
saxophonist Pat Rizzo since its inception
16 years ago.
Rizzo came to the
attention of Frank
Sinatra after his
appearance at the
desert home of Ol’
Blue Eyes. Shortly
afterward, in 1974,
Sinatra asked Rizzo
to join his musical
aggregation in Las
Vegas. Rizzo became
a featured soloist.
Their musical paths
crossed many times.
“Working with Frank Sinatra has been one of the
greatest musical opportunities of my life, a real learning
experience!” Rizzo recalls.
In total contrast to life with Sinatra, Rizzo was completing an around-the-world tour with Sly and the Family
Stone from 1972 to 1975. During this period Rizzo also
performed with Tito Puente and Sinatra.
Rizzo continued concert touring when he replaced the
late Charles Miller in War, one of the hottest recording
groups of that era. Additionally, he recorded several albums and film sound tracks with Ry Cooder.
He composed and performed on four of War’s hit
albums and can still be seen today on VH1’s redubbed
videos of both War and Sly and the Family Stone.
His ability to make easy transitions from jazz to rock
to pop comes from a deep artistic devotion stemming
from his early childhood. He learned to play piano by
ear, picking up what he heard from his mother, a former
concert pianist.
Later, he turned to woodwind instruments and soon
mastered the five saxophones.
By the time he was 12, Pat and boyhood friends
formed their own band and played for neighborhood
fraternal organizations and high school dances. As early
as 15, they had to lie about their ages to perform in local
nightclubs.
At college, first at Windham in Vermont and later at
The Manhattan School of Music, Rizzo received formal
musical training and added mastery of the flute to his
repertoire.
His versatility and widespread notoriety in New York
garnered the attention of noted bandleaders such as Tito
Puente. His work
with Puente widened his expertise in Latin jazz
where he added
the conga drum
to his musical
craft.
Hollywood
beckoned. On
the West Coast,
he worked for
a cadre of superstars on the
A&M, Warner
Brothers, and
Motown labels.
He appeared
in and recorded
sound tracks for
several movies,
including “Palm
Springs Weekend.” This began his 25-year love affair with
the desert city.
Today, Palm Springs is his home. He has become a
must-see celebrity in the desert.
Rizzo has served as maestro for one of Palm Springs’
most illustrious events, The Frank Sinatra Invitation Ball,
as well as the private after-party bash for special Sinatra
celebrity friends.
The occasion, in honor of The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, starred Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme.
R i z zo a n d
his orchestra
joined forces
with pianistvocalist Frankie
Randall in presenting a weekly extravaganza
at Morongo
Casino in the
mid-1990s.
This musical entourage
hit the concert
tour in October 1997, armed with original arrangements
of Frank Sinatra’s hit recordings. It was entitled, “World
on a String,” a good title for a concert tour and an appropriate description of Pat Rizzo’s musical career.

Five Decades of a Life Playing Jazz
Charles
McPherson was
born in Joplin,
Mo., and moved to Detroit at the age of
9. After growing up in Detroit, he studied
with the renowned pianist Barry Harris
and started playing jazz professionally at
age 19. He moved from Detroit to New
York in 1959 and performed with Charles
Mingus from 1960 to 1972. While performing with Mingus, he collaborated frequently
with Harris, Lonnie Hillyer (trumpet), and
George Coleman (tenor sax).
He was recently featured at Lincoln
Center showcasing his original compositions and arrangements with a seven-piece
ensemble. He has toured the U.S., Europe,
Japan, Africa and South America with his
own group, as well as with jazz greats Billy
Eckstine, Lionel Hampton, Nat Adderly, Jay
McShann and others.
McPherson has recorded as guest artist
with Charlie Mingus, Harris, Art Farmer,
Kenny Drew, Toshiko Akiyoshi, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, and the Lincoln
Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. He has recorded as leader on Prestige,
Fantasy, Mainstream, Discovery, Xanadu,
and most recently Arabesque record labels.
His most recent recording is the highly
acclaimed “Manhattan Nocturne.”
McPherson also was the featured alto
saxophonist in the Clint Eastwood film
“Bird,” a biography about Charlie Parker.

McPherson remains a strong, viable force on the jazz
scene today. He is at the height of his powers. His playing combines passionate feeling with intricate patterns
of improvisation. Throughout his five decades of being
an integral performer of the music, McPherson has not
merely remained true to his bop origins, but has expanded
on them.
Stanley Crouch says in his New York Times article
on McPherson, “He is a singular voice who has never
sacrificed the fluidity of his melody making, and is held
in high esteem by musicians both long seasoned and
young.”
He is available internationally for concerts, festivals
and club dates as a soloist or with The Charles McPherson Group. McPherson also offers clinics and master
classes.

Wine Garden a New Venue This Year
This
year’s festival features a new venue for jazz
goers who want to get away from the music
and excitement for a spell, and kick back while sipping
some quality wines.
Iron Horse Vineyards of Sonoma County, which specializes in sparkling wine, pours its premium wines and
bubbly to tasters for only $5 in the new Wine Garden
set between the French Quarter and the Amphitheatre
on the same side of the lane.
Iron Horse is a small, independent,
family-owned winery located in cool, foggy
Green Valley. “The founding partners, Audrey and Barry Sterling first saw it in the
pouring rain in February 1976,” according
to its Web site. “Driving down Ross Station Road, they were sure they were lost
until they crested the knoll and the view
opened up to 300 acres of gentle rolling hills and a wall of
trees behind that looked like Camelot to them. Incurable
romantics, and having extraordinary vision, they bought
the property in just two weeks.
“The name Iron Horse came from a train that stopped
at Ross Station at the turn of the 20th Century. The logo,
the rampant horse on a weathervane, came from an actual
weathervane that was unearthed when they were leveling
the ground to build the winery.”
LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR,
Iron Horse’s sparkling wines “have been served at the
White House for the past five consecutive presidential
administrations, beginning with the historic ReaganGorbachev Summit Meetings, which led to the end of
the Cold War.”
Bristol Farms flowers add to the ambiance, and its
prewrapped fruit, cheese and cracker trays, for sale at
the venue, give wine tasters something to nosh on while
enjoying the garden.
Bristol Farms opened its first store in 1982
in Rolling Hills. The gourmet and specialty
food retailer “was named after a street in West
Los Angeles, and the word ‘Farms’ was added
to emphasize freshness, homemade quality and
a warm glow of simple pleasures,” according
to corporate information.
In addition to Rolling Hills, the areas
of South Pasadena, Manhattan Beach, Westlake Village,
Long Beach, Newport Beach, Hollywood, Westwood,
Beverly Hills, Redondo Beach, Westchester, La Jolla, San
Francisco, Palm Desert and Santa Clarita Valley all boast
Bristol Farms stores.
“The accent is going to be on champagne tasting so we
offer something unique,” said Jazz in the Pines Executive
Director Jeff Hocker.
“Tasters also will be able to buy Jazz in the Pines
commemorative glasses for $5 each,” he said.
Tasters also will be able to buy bottles to take with
them, with the winery providing carriers.

In the Company of Divas
Yve
(pronounced
Eve) Evans, singer/pianist/entertainer, has been
called “a wholesomely flirty
little ball of a woman with
eyes that can convey either
humor or sex directly to the
back row of the audience with
an honest immediacy.” (Michael Burgess, Village News)
Regardless of how others
might describe her, she will tell
you that it is the truth in the material that she tries to instill
in her performances. Whether as singer, pianist or musical
actress, Evans explores the truth in art — the depth of loss,
the height of celebration, the joy of being.
At age 3, singing before a congregation of 1,500 people on
Easter Sunday, Evans had no idea that performance was her destiny.
But the young girl grew up to be a blues singer and pianist of the
highest order.
The intangible quality of her music has a life of its own that
reaches out and touches the souls of the people who hear it.
Evans has toured the world, played with the greats and cut five
albums. She was educated in the United States, Japan and Europe.
She was mentored by internationally renowned choral conductor
Jester Hariston and attended the University of California, Irvine,
School of Fine Arts where she studied opera and theater.
Evans’ band (she calls it her Company) is comprised of some
of the industry’s most accomplished musicians; each performance
showing a dedication to the tradition and understanding of jazz
and its timeless repertoire, and the intention of sharing the sheer
joy and freedom the music brings with the audience. Or at the very
least, taking the audience on a musical roller coaster ride (with
Evans at the helm).
An international performer who has learned from every
milieu in which she has spent time, Evans divides her performing influences into the three phases of Evans the artist
— singer, pianist and stand-up actress/performer, which is to
say that Evans tells stories with her music.
After Evans tells her story, you will have been there with
her.
Sherry
Wi l liams
is first and foremost a singer
— the 14-karat variety. Since
she began singing as a professional, Sherry has had the
good fortune to rarely be
out of work. “When I was a
high school student in San
Bernardino, I got a chance to
sing and tour with The Young
Americans,” said Sherry. “That’s heavy stuff when you’re 16,
but it gave me the foundation that I needed.”
Sherry became a member of Disneyland Kids of the Kingdom group, then worked with the famous Roger Wagner and
the UCLA Choir, both in Los Angeles and Europe.
In 1969, Sherry joined The Unusual We, a musical group
composed of 10 energetic performers, working with them in
big-time arenas and theaters like Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe.
Fate stepped in again. Debbie Reynolds was so impressed with
the group she signed them as an integral part of her nightclub
act and concert tour. When The Unusual We dissolved, Debbie
asked Sherry to continue in the act, which she did.
Since then there have been numerous TV appearances (The
Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Glen Campbell Show,
The Tom Jones Show, The Della Reese Show, Soul Train and
others), recording sessions (including albums with El Chicano
and Red Bone) and more nightclub and concert tours. She has
also toured with Andy Gibb and the legendary Johnnie Ray.
In 1976, Sherry left The Eddie Kendricks Tour and struck
out on her own, touring Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and
Bangkok.
Since returning to the U.S. after her last Asian tour in 1980,
Sherry has acted in films and on TV, worked extensively in
and around the Los Angeles and Denver areas in important
jazz venues, nightclubs and festivals, and recorded three solo
CDs. In 1997, she released her first CD, “The Way You Love
Me,” to rave reviews. Her second release, “Taste Of Sherry,” was
on the 2003 Grammy ballot and one of the songs was used
in the soundtrack of the film “The Core.” In late 2003, she
released “You Must Believe In Spring,” again to rave reviews.
Robin
Ad l e r,
San Diego vocalist and veteran
of the Peter Sprague group,
and her husband, multi-instrumentalist music producer
Dave Blackburn, have been
lifelong fans of Joni Mitchell.
In early 2006 they embarked
on the ambitious project of
learning her music in all its
complexities and through all
its epochs. Hoping to honor
such a major artist they have produced a tribute show deep
in its own right.
Although they often perform as a guitar and vocal duo,
Robin and Dave have assembled a group of extraordinary
musicians to be the concert band, called Mutts of the Planet,
after a line from a Mitchell lyric. The band has evolved
fresh arrangements of well-known Mitchell standards such
as “Woodstock,” “River” and “Both Sides Now” and tackles
some of the most challenging material from the later jazz
period in Mitchell’s career.
The music is presented along with illuminating details of
educational interest about Mitchell’s songs and the circumstances of their creation, which has been a favorite aspect for
many listeners. The result has been a hugely successful series
of sold-out concerts prompting audience testimonials from the
website guestbook: “Robin’s vocals were dead on. I thought
Joni was actually in the room!” “Robin was incarnating the
soul and spirit of our beloved Joni” and “Was it worth the
2,281 miles I traveled to hear it? Oh heck yeah!”
The concert band comprises Robin on all lead vocals, Dave
Blackburn on guitars, Barnaby Finch on keyboards (touring
veteran of Tom Scott, Lee Ritenour and George Benson’s
bands), top San Diego bassist Dave Curtis, Jeff Olson on
drums (David Benoit) and Britt Doehring backup vocals.
Guitarist, drummer, producer, recording engineer and
songwriter, Dave Blackburn has performed and recorded with
his wife since 1990. They share a love of soul, jazz and funk
music that reveals itself in all their work.

Festival’s Success Depends on Associates
Who Are the Associates?
The Associates are a dedicated group of individuals,
families and businesses who support the educational
programs of Idyllwild Arts. More than 300 members, both
in Idyllwild and off the Hill, share a belief in the vital role
of the arts in our society.
Mission Statement
The Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation is a group
of more than 200 dedicated volunteers who organize
fund-raising events each year to raise monies for scholarships for Idyllwild Arts students.
The Associates’ fund-raisers include concerts, auctions
and the popular two-day Jazz in the Pines, now in its
16th year. Jazz in the Pines is staffed by Associates as well
as many volunteers from the Idyllwild and surrounding
communities, and brings in audiences from throughout
Southern California and beyond.
All proceeds from each of the Associates’ events go
directly to scholarships.
What Do the Associates Do?
• Raise funds for Summer Program and Arts Academy
scholarships through annual membership contributions
and fund-raising events.
• Maintain a special endowment fund for future
scholarships.
• Provide volunteer service to the school.
• Sponsor cultural activities for members and the
community at large.
How Does Jazz in the Pines
Fit in?
All Jazz in the Pines profits are used directly for
Idyllwild Arts scholarships, both for the regular school
year and the Summer Program, providing an opportunity
to learn or polish skills in a variety of arts disciplines,
including jazz!
Scholarships are based on financial need, talent, and a
program’s need to strengthen a particular area.
Funds also are dedicated to children of single-parent
families and to encourage increased multicultural
diversity in the summer.
Why You Should Join Us
Reasons for joining the Associates are as varied as the
individual members.
Some join just to support the scholarship program.
Perhaps equally important is working with others who
care about music, theater, dance and other arts.
Some members love jazz and want to get involved with
our prestigious festival.
If you are new to our community, joining the
Associates may be your way to meet people and get
acquainted.
Whatever reason, you’ll be joining a group of people
committed to giving talented young artists financial help.
Add a new dimension to
your life. Join us!
How did you learn about the Associates?

History
Idyllwild Arts (formerly Idyllwild School of Music
and the Arts or ISOMATA) was founded by Dr. Max
Krone and his wife, Beatrice. Visionaries with a dream
of a remote place where people of all backgrounds could
come together to experience the arts, they established the
Idyllwild Arts Foundation in 1946 and purchased acreage
in the scenic San Jacinto Mountains on which to build. In
1950, about 100 adult students began attending summer
classes in the arts.
Over the years, summer activities have continued to
grow, expanding to include programs for children of all
ages, a special Family Camp, and the Distinguished Artist
Residency series. Classes in music, dance, theatre, visual
arts, writing and Native American arts are offered to
students from ages 5 to 85. Each year more than 1,800
adults and children attend Idyllwild Arts Summer Program
courses.
In 1964, the school was given to the University of
Southern California under the terms of an agreement with
the Idyllwild Arts Foundation. In 1983, the Foundation
exercised its option to resume independent management
and resumed sole ownership of the school. In 1985, Dr.
and Mrs. Richard H. MacNeal became major benefactors
of the school and provided the funds to realize a long-time
dream: the establishment of the first independent boarding
high school for the arts in the western United States, the
Idyllwild Arts Academy.
The Academy opened in
the fall of 1986 with a student body of 70 students,
grades 8–12. In that first
year, students attended a
nearby school each morning for college-preparatory
academic classes and returned to the Idyllwild Arts
Academy campus to receive
pre-professional training in
the arts each afternoon. By
1990, academic classes were
held on the IAA campus.

Volunteer of the Year Makes It All Work
By Marshall Smith
Staff Reporter
In
every major concert entertainment event, there
are the behind the scenes logistical managers who
make it all work for the musicians and concert patrons
— from setting up playing venues to collecting trash to
placing portable potties.
Richard Collins, 2009 Jazz in the Pines Volunteer of
the Year, is that guy.
“I’m a nuts and bolts guy,” said Collins, whose background includes heading the Ventura County Probation
Department Youth Services Division and many years in
Santa Paula as a general contractor.
With a master’s degree in public administration from
Thousand Oaks’ California Lutheran University, Collins
came to the Hill from Santa Paula in 2004 and in short
order became involved with the Associates of Idyllwild
Arts Foundation.
Liz Wirt and Nancy Harrison recruited him in 2005,
where he first worked in setting up the French Quarter,
still his favorite venue.
The next year, Collins assisted Ted Cummings who
headed the logistics effort. “Cummings was a great mentor,”
said Collins, “a great organizer and one who committed
everything to paper.”
Collins, who tips his hat often to fellow volunteers,
said Cummings’ template made everything easier when
he graduated into heading the logistical planning team
the next year.
“There are a lot of things that have to be dealt with
in a short period of time,” noted Collins, who went on
to describe the Thursday/Friday setup window for getting the festival structurally in place, and the Monday
breakdown and storage day.
“My construction background has been helpful,” Collins said. “It was probably the reason I was recruited in
the first place.”
But Collins is careful to credit the team with which
he works. “The last couple of years have really gone
smoothly,” he said. “I know it’s the team.”
Those volunteers with whom he has worked give him
more credit.
“He’s an all-around kind of guy who knows a lot
about a lot of things,” said Suzon Capparelli. “He has
the foresight to see what needs to be done without being
asked. Everyone [all the Associates] agreed he was the
one [to receive the award]. He’s just a great guy.”
“He never really wants to take any laurels,” said volunteer Marsha Lytle, “He’s great to work with.”
Associates’ President Jorgine Brause said, “He’s marvelous. He’s been a mainstay of the festival for several years.
We couldn’t do the jazz festival without him.”
Collins maintains his modest equanimity.
“There are so many people who are involved as volunteers that need to be thanked. I want to make sure
everybody gets their due.
“This is one of those labors that pays you back for
every effort you put into it,” said Collins.
“It [the festival] is in a beautiful setting. People come
up to see Idyllwild.
It’s for a good cause [funding scholarships for Idyllwild
Arts students] and you get to meet terrific people.”
Coworkers would say that Collins is one of those terrific people.
