The Silopanna Sculptural Playground will create a safe space for children, families and those using nearby trails, to rest and play adjacent to the Museum located in Annapolis near Bates Middle School. The Chesapeake Children’s Museum www.theccmorg., located at 25 Silopanna Road, was incorporated in 1994. What is your strategy for increasing the effectiveness of your organization? “I wanted these Sculptures to first be works of art,” says Casey Reed Johnson in his written proposal. “designing in the functional element of play. I also wanted these works to describe or allude to forms you may encounter living by the Chesapeake Bay or being out on the water.” The new works of art, designed in collaboration with Campion H. Ruby Landscape Architects, will be constructed with domestic hardwoods such as Black Locust, Red Cedar, and White Oak. A maintenance plan will be created to ensure they last a minimum of 10 years. “We love to see projects,” says Executive Director April Nyman, “When two organizations work together to reach out to serve a larger community,” 2 2 THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! Opening July 17th at BWI Marshall Airport “REFLECTIONS” Juried Art Show On exhibit through October 30, 2015 Summer 2015 It has been an active year for Anne Arundel County Arts Organizations! We have seen growth in artistic programming as well as upgrades and additions to our arts venues. In order to support and promote this growth, the Arts Council has been busy! Looking back on the past fiscal year, I’m pleased to report our accomplishments. Our grants committee created and funded the first set in a new category of grants – Strategic Impact Grants. Intended for projects that fall outside of an organization’s regularly scheduled programming, Strategic Impact Grants allow for a major change in the way an organization is able to impact the Arts within the community, and are already proving successful. We also implemented a web-based grant application process and have completed two successful rounds of grants submissions through this system. We’ll continue to streamline the process for our grantees. We have also used a variety of media platforms, paired with our expanding technology, to support the programs of our own organization and our grantees. Our arts exhibit program now has developed and implemented an online registration, application and submission process for our juried shows. This includes an online artist gallery. A second exhibit venue is in the works and we hope to debut it this fall. Our Outreach Committee presented three programs this year for grantees and the arts community. These included interactive presentations on non-profit social media, funding/grant availability for both organizations and artists, and a networking event. It’s been a great year – but we’re not done! Key goals for this coming year include expanded outreach to county artists, arts organizations and the community; expanded partnerships with groups that can promote the arts; and enhanced marketing, public relations and social media on behalf of our arts organizations. Have a great summer… and be sure to enjoy some amazing local performances and art exhibits while you do! ------Marnie Kagan, President Arts Council of Anne Arundel County Board of Directors Arts-in-Education Grants Make a Difference STUDENTS LEARN WHILE CREATING MURAL The remarkable Maryland mural that the 2014-2015 fourth grade Brock Bridge Elementary School students created includes local wildlife, landforms, and Native American tools. It is a wonderful hands-on tool that will enhance students’ understanding of the Anne Arundel County Public School’s fourth grade social studies curriculum. During the year, students in fourth grade study the geography, economics, and history of Maryland. In future years to come, students in all grades, but especially fourth grade, will be able to use the Maryland mural to learn and explore our great state. Sarah Lipphard, teacher The Arts-in-education program administered by the Arts Council provides opportunities for Anne Arundel County schools to utilize auditorium programs and artist-in-residence programs to enrich student curriculum in a variety of ways. At Brock Bridge Elementary School in Laurel, fourth grade students worked with artist Amanda Pellerin, to create a mural made of ceramic tiles. Pellerin worked with each social studies class to plan and design the mural. Together, artist and students created handmade clay tiles that they cut and shaped. After the tiles were fired in the kiln, each group participated in executing the layout, cementing, and grouting of the mural. Says ACAAC Board member Esther Parker, “I'm really excited the Arts Council is able to assist our educators in putting the "A" in STEM and turning it into STEAM by helping to bring art into our schools through both residency and artist-in-residence grant funding. Art can enable our students to sustain learning in many different ways." "A History of Annapolis in 99 Objects" Historic Annapolis is developing a museum exhibit that will relate stories about Maryland's capital city using artifacts in the collection of Historic Annapolis or loaned by other institutions or individuals. There’s still time to see our Spring Show: “Red Winter, Pink Spring and all the Colors in Between” before our next exhibit “Reflections” opens on July 17th. You are invited to nominate an object you think should be considered For inclusion in the exhibit. online at: http://www.annapolis.org/in dex.asp?pageid=206 and e-mail a digital photo of the object you are nominating to 99objects@annapolis.org Artist Rufus Norman, standing beside his work “revolution” acrylic on paper, at the opening reception of “Red Winter, Pink Spring and all the Colors in Between” Photo by Wil Scott.
