Technology in the Sim Lab Some Simple Strategies to Increase Learning John Harris, BS, NRP, CHSE Educational Services Specialist Laerdal Medical Corp. Objectives • Recall 3 evidence-based recommendations to improve learners’ adoption of simulation. • Demonstrate how to use media as “virtual moulage”. • Discuss two inexpensive technological enhancements to increase learning. Overview Research Patient Monitor Media Technology Activity This is a short quiz to check your mental flexibility Work alone and don’t talk or peek! What does the Research Say? • Set your learners up for success – Brief – Role Model – Remain current in clinical practice and with current technology – Model thinking-in-action – Repeat demonstrations • What does this have to do with technology? • Prepared videos? Using Media to Enhance Simulation Media Virtual Moulage • Media files are used in simulation to enhance the reality of the experience. • Existing files are imported and then displayed on the simulator’s patient monitor Media Types • Pictures (x-ray, wounds, skin conditions, injuries) • Video (neurological signs and pathology, breathing patterns) • Documents (lab results, radiology reports) • Learning materials (reference material and rationale) • Vocal sounds (pre-recorded sound clips played as the simulator’s voice) Collecting Media • • • • Purchase from SimStore Download from internet Access from patient records (HIPAA Compliant) Retrieve from learning support materials (some textbooks include media files) • Create your own – Digital camera – Digital video recorder – PC Sources to Gather Media Websites • Vocals – http://www.wavsource.com – http://wavplanet.com/ – http://audiosparx.com • Images (wounds, faces, x-rays, etc…) – – – – www.mysimcenter.com http://images.google.com http://istockphoto.com http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus • Video – http://proficientprocedures.com – http://www.medicalvideos.us • Share ideas at your table Media File Types • Pictures – – – – – *.jpg (except Lab location) *.jpeg *.bmp *.gif *.tiff • Documents – – – – *.htm *.html *.txt *.pdf (except Media location) • Video – – – – *.avi *.mpg *.mpeg *.wmv • Audio – *.wav Activity Start the computer on your table Importing Media 3G & Essential • Click File then select Transfer media files… Importing Media 3G & Essential • Select Destination Folder by clicking on the tab, then click on Add files… Importing Media 3G & Essential Importing Media 3G & Essential • Alternatively, you can save media files directly to the destination folder by following the pathways below – X-Rays: C:/ Program Files/ Laerdal Medical/ SimMan3G/ ri/ userdata_common/ X-Rays – Media: C:/ Program Files/ Laerdal Medical/ SimMan3G/ ri/ userdata_common/ Media – Labs: Start / My Documents/ SimMan 3G/ userdata_common/ Labs • Vocal files can be saved here– Vocal Sounds: C:/ Program Files/ Laerdal Medical/ SimMan3G/ ri/ userdata_common/vocal sounds Displaying Media on the Patient Monitor • Media appears on the patient monitor Displaying Media 3G and Essential • Click File, then select Transfer Media Files… Displaying Media 3G and Essential • Select tab Radiology, Multimedia, or Lab Results, then click Add Files… Displaying Media 3G and Essential • Select file from saved images. Note, your computer may go back directly to the last folder you looked in. If this happens, utilize the address bar to back out to the root folder named Xray, Media, or Labs Displaying Media 3G and Essential • Now the file will be displayed in the “prepare for transfer” window. Displaying Media 3G and Essential • Once transferred, the file will move down to the “Transferred files:” window. This means the file is available to the learner (delayed files not withstanding). These files will be available for the duration of the scenario. Displaying Media 3G and Essential • Adding text messages to the patient monitor Tech Tips Tech Tips Tech Tips Tech Tips Compressor tubing Remote Desktop Software Activity • Share ideas and thoughts with your table.
