Analysis • Transient differences like this are: • Much more likely in high motion files with significant scene variability • Rare • Short (1-2 frames) • That said, VBR • Avoids this problem • Produces Many Files Encoded Per Week? • Streaming Learning Center (16 respondents) • 10 of 16 produced more than 100 files per week Which Encoding Technique • 25 responses – could select more than one • 11 used CBR • 11 also used some form of VBR If Constrained VBR, What %? • 110% most commonly used • Meets TN 2224 spec • Provides encoding wiggle room • Otherwise range up to 200% constrained VBR Regarding HLS Files • Hmm Comments • We have applied 110% constrained VBR for HLS streams for over 2 years. Point is not to be strictly in line with Apple app recommendations (Apple will approve apps with warnings in validator - we've had many on iOS and tvOS), but to get best VQ as possible and to get the heuristics used to switch from one stream to work as expected. • IreplayTV Comments • Using VBR with a peak rate that is much greater than the average is a problem when the network throughput is constrained to significantly less than that peak, such as the nominal rate plus 10%. • In many cases there is a weak link in the network, such as throughput of a crowded Wi-Fi hotspot, so the peak rate may be an issue. • Broadcom Also • Apple has bumped VOD recommendations for Apple TV to 200% constrained VBR • http://bit.ly/AppleTV_recs Bottom Line • CBR is most conservative • Of course, use for live • 110% is next, preserving switching heuristics and avoiding CBR quality deficits • Other producers are more aggressive • May want to consider different ladders for mobile and Apple TV I-, B- and P-frames • Defining keyframes (used interchangeably with I-frame) • Choosing a keyframe interval • Configuring keyframe parameters • Note – B-frames discussed at bit.ly/h264fun (for fundamentals) What are I, B and P Frames? • I-Frame - encoded without reference to other frames (also called keyframes) • P - looks backward to I and P frames (predictive) B - looks forward and backward to previous I and P frames (Bi-directional interpolated) No frames refer to B-Frame (most of the time) Configuring keyframes Though largest frame, keyframes enhance interactivity • • • All playback starts on a keyframe When seeking to random frame (like the third p-frame), must start playback at preceding keyframe To enhance interactivity, maximum key interval should be 5-10 seconds Has to seek back to here To play this frame What About Adaptive? • Rules change when encoding a group of files for adaptive streaming • Shorter keyframe interval to enable more nimble stream switching • Keyframe interval must match in all files • Need regular interval (e.g.. every 90 frames) • Disable scene change detection when this will change this interval What About Adaptive? B-frame Tests • Encoding parameters • Encode with 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 • Encode at 720p@2900 • Three different files • New test clip (11 clips, lots of motion and detail) • Walk Among the Tombstones movie trailer (limited DF, lots of quick cuts and camera motion) • Sintel animation (Blender Foundation) B-frame Comparisons • Definitely use B-frames • Magic number between 3- 4 • Your mileage may vary by footage and data rate Reference Frames • What are they? • Frames from which the encoded frame can find redundant information • What’s the trade-off? • Searching through more frames takes more time, lengthening the encoding cycle • Since most redundancies are found in frames proximate to the encoded frame, additional reference frames deliver diminishing returns How Much Time? Tests performed with Sorenson Squeeze on 3.3 GHz 12-core HP Z800 workstation encoding 93 second 720p file to 800 kbps. How Much Quality? • Sharpest image appears to be 5 reference frames • Clearly not a huge difference B-Frame Bottom Line • 3 B-frames/5 reference frames is a good general purpose recommendation • Always enable adaptive B-frames so encoder can adjust for content Choosing a Codec • Codec – stands for enCOde/DEcode • Need the decode side to play the video • Which platforms have decoders? Computer/No tebook iOS Android Retail OTT (Roku, Apple TV) Smart TV H.264 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes HEVC No No Version 5+ No Most newer Chrome, Firefox, Opera No Yes Some Few VP9 Codecs: What’s Coming? • AV1 Codec • Alliance for Open Media (Google, MS, Mozilla, Cisco, Intel, Amazon, ARM, AMD, NVIDIA, Netflix, Amazon) • Consolidate open source development from Google (VP10), Mozilla (Daala) and Cisco (Thor) • AV1 should ship between 12/2016-3/2017 • Immediate support in Chrome, Edge, Firefox • Immediate use by Netflix/Amazon/YouTube • Hardware support in the short term • Clear open-source successor to VP9 for HTML5 Codecs: What’s Coming? • V-Nova Perseus • From UK company • Deployed by Sky Italia • Installed on existing STBs, upgrading playback capabilities from H.264 to Perseus • No Cap-EX • Performance about 40% better than H.264; Slightly behind HEVC • Cuts Sky Italia’s bandwidth costs and enables higher QOS to customers on slower connections • Also used by Fast Filmz for ultra-low bitrate Android/Mobile deployment in India • USP is very light decode requirements • Also deployed by Sky Italia (since 2013) for contribution • No clear path to play in browser; could be very successful if sole market is STB upgrad Use H.264 for Compatibility • Primary focus is H.264 • Most broadly compatible • HEVC – 4K TV sets (may change with Android) • VP9 – Though DASH is codec agnostic, most implementations, other than YouTube, are not VP9 Watch Profiles and Levels • Profiles/Levels • Most critical compatibility-related setting • Encode using wrong profile, file won’t play on target device • Available on all encoding tools • Don’t exceed profile and level of target device • Exclusively a concern with mobile (we’ll examine later) • Computers and OTT devices can play High profile (any level) Codecs and Container Formats • Codecs: Compression technologies • H.264, VP9, HEVC • Container formats • Specs detailing how data/metadata are stored in a file • MP4, WEBM, .MPD, .TS, .ISMV, .F4F • Also called “wrappers” • As in, “encoded the file using the H.264 codec in a QuickTime wrapper” • Why important? • File must be in proper container format to play on target platforms Where is Container Format?
