INTRODUCTION When selecting a tool from this catalog be guided by the requirements of the workpiece and the largest fastener or rivet to be installed. Tool selection is normally based upon access to the workpiece and maximum power required. The maximum power capability of each tool is specified along with a photograph and other pertinent data. Tool requirements for riveting are determined by rivet diameter and material type such as copper, steel, titanium, aluminum, monel, etc., and whether solid or semi-tubular. In the case of captive hardware such as studs, threaded inserts, floaters, stand ofts, etc., diameter and material type must be considered. General Pneumatic Tools are light, easy to hold and simple to operate. All are essentially noiseless expect for the muffled exhaust. All General Pneumatic Tools function as squeezers, not as hammers. This squeezing action whether in a hand held or stationary tool is deemed necessary to produce the vital cold metal flow essential for proper retention of captive hardware. These same characteristics assure uniformity required to meet the rigid specifications of MIL-403B. Whether your requirements are for the military, aerospace, airline assured the finest quality and value available anywhere in the world. or commercial you are Elsewhere in this catalog you will find general information pertaining to rivets of all types used throughout the United States. In addition we have included complete information on tooling for these rivets. X 1/4 inch long STEP NO.1: Insert 2 flat squeezer sets in the tool. Apply air and measure the gap between sets at end of stroke. This gap should always measure slightly less than the length of the rivet. Flat squeezer sets are graduated in 1/16 inch increments from 1/8th thru 1 inch in length. All other squeezer sets are graduated in 1/8th inch increments. Make a trial squeeze on scrap material. If more squeeze is needed, add a shim under the head of either set. Hardened shims are available for this purpose in three increments: 1/64th inch, 1/32nd inch, and 1/16th inch. This system allows adjustment between squeezer set increments. The gap at end of stroke is important, if too small the tool will stall. Keeping in mind that full power is obtained during the final1/16th inch of RAM travel. Because the tool cannot squeeze beyond the end of travel it is therefore possible to squeeze even the tiniest rivet or fastener precisely without damage to the workpiece. It's all in the gap adjustment. POPULAR RIVET HEAD STYLES & STANDARD Example: AN-470 - AD-4-.8 AN - When these two letters precede numbers, they indicate Army and Navy specifications. MS - When these two letters precede numbers, they indicate Military Standard specifications. 470 - The first three numbers ind icate the type of head: 470 = universal head, 430 = round head, etc. AD - Letters following head type code indicate material: A = 1100 (2S) aluminum, AD =2117-T4 (A17ST) , etc. 4 - First numbers after material code indicate diameter of rivet in 32nds of an inch. 4::: 4/32" or 1/8", 12 = 12/32" or 3/8", etc. 8 - Last numbers indicate length of rivet in 16ths of an inch: 8 = 8/16" or 1/2",10 = 10/16" or 5/8", etc. A 1100 (25) NO MARK AD 2117-T4 (A175T) Rivel ShankDiameter Lto ROUND HEAD AN430AD MS20426A MS20470A AN455A TIo UO LJo ITo ITo 100 C'SUNK UNIVERSAL BRAZIER FLAT HEAD MS20426AD' MS20470AD AN455AD AN442AD 100' C'SUNK UNIVERSAL BRAZIER FLAT HEAD D AN430D MS20426D MS20470D AN455D AN442D 2017-T4 'ITo UOI ITo RAISED DOT ROUND HEAD 100' C'SUNK UNIVERSAL DD 2024-T4 AN430DD MS20426DD MS20470DD (245T) RAISED DOUBLE DASH , B 5056 (565) UO ROUND HEAD AN430B BRAZIER FLAT HEAD AN455DD AN442DD C'SUNK UNIVERSAL BRAZIER MS20426B MS20470B AN455B 100' AN456D MODIFIED BRAZIER AN456DD MODIFIED BRAZIER FLAT WF:AD AN4428 AN456B UG TIe UG u0 LTo TIe UNIVERSAL BRAZIER FLAT HEAD MS20615CU AN420C AN441C 100' C'SUNK C MS20435C MS20427C NO MARK ROUND HEAD 100' C'SUNK UNIVERSAL 90' C'SUNK F MS20435F MS20427F MS20613F AN420F STAINLESS STEEL MODIFIED BRAZIER TIo UO 1fo ITo Uo ROUND HEAD .". A single item is referred to as a set. Two sets are required to upset any rivet. Normally one will be flat and the other will be selected to properly nest the head of the rivet. If there is any question as to the proper tooling check the MS or AN number. If this is not available compare the head shape with the drawings. 4. SELECTING A YOKE C-YOKE NOMENCLATURE Four factors will determine how to select the proper yoke for your application. 1. The gap dimension ("B") on our yoke drawing, the length of your rivet determines minimum gap. 2. The reach (dimension "A") edge distance determines reach. 3. Allowances must be made for rivet material such as aluminum, brass, copper, steel, stainless steel, monel and whether solid or semi-tubular. The rivet diameter directly affects your choice of yoke. A B C D Reach Gap Center Line Between Bolt Mounting Set Holder Diameter E Top Set Hole Diameter -A.E I F Thickness of Yoke G Base Height D --./ 4. Tool power rating (maximum force). compressive Because of these variables ouryokes are manufactured as either light or heavy duty types. All General Pneumatic yokes are made of chromemoly steel, precision machined, heat treated and ground for long life. In general it's best to select a yoke with the smallest gap and shortest reach consistant with your application. Go as light as possible. It saves both weight and money. As the rivet length increases it is necessary to increase the gap of the yoke. Consult our chart for gap requirements based on rivet length.
