It is with pleasure that I introduce the new Guide of EDUITALIA, a no profit organization which has among its basic aims the international diffusion of the Italian culture in the field of Study Abroad. The EDUITALIA Guide proposes a selection of the best academic courses of schools/ universities , trying in this way to represent a cultural guidance compass for the foreign student. Italy is a nation which enchants in every Region for its naturalistic wonders, for its considerable historical, cultural and artistic heritage which turns our country into an open air gallery. Italy is described by those who had the possibility to study and to live there, even for a short period, as a paradise for lovers of art, culture and savoir-vivre. And I am sure that thanks to the EDUITALIA Guide, foreign students and schools abroad can choose their favourite places for the best cultural and, in the meantime, tourist experiences. In the Guide they will be able to find, in fact, the courses of the best schools present in our country, including Design and Fashion institutes, Art institutes (Sculpture, Painting, Ceramics), Italian and foreign universities with their humanistic, technical and scientific courses even in English. A better world of peace can be created only with the birth of a new global citizen and the student is the driving force of this hope. Senator Franco Danieli Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs VA L L E D A O S TA Roman Aosta - Aosta, also known as the Rome of the Alps is a city rich with numerous Roman remains; The Theatre, Forum, Au gustan Arch, Praetorian Gates, Cyptoporticus, and Pailleron Tower. These wonderful structures are an inte gral part of Valle d'Aosta's identity, a place where modernity constantly draws upon its ancient roots. Valle d'Aosta is famous for its castles and witness to a particularly rich and intense feudal history. In its primitive fortifications, military forts, sumptuous courtly residenc es, towers and fortresses, vis itors will remain enchanted by the magic and charm of these 'sentries of the past'. Follow in the footsteps of pil grims along the Franciscan Way, which up until the Mid dle Ages was the only route between England and Italy. Aosta www.regione.vda.it VALLE DAOSTA Passing over the Great Saint Bernard Pass and leading directly to Rome, this ancient route will allow you to discover numerous sanctuaries, solitary consecrated cells and see a different side of Valle d'Aosta at a slower and more attentive pace while taking in all the details of our precious history. Spirituality has deep roots in Valle d'Aosta, visible on the medieval pilgrim ways, in sanctuaries, churches and chapels. There are countless examples of age-old faith: imposing Gothic bell towers, superb décor, lavish frescoes, precious crucifixes, prestigious shrines and many other treasures to discover and admire. In the mid 18th century, the properties of the Savoy Dy nasty became exclusive, rec reational places for hunting and select agricultural prod ucts. This was the case, for example, for the Racconigi, Pollenzo, Govone and La Torino Mandria residences, which remained "royal holiday res idences". Cuneo www.piemonte-emozioni.it www.regione.piemonte.it State in the 19th and 20th centuries, the palaces, castles and villas became museums. They now speak to us of the past; of dukes and kings who PIEMONTE When the properties were transferred from the Savoy Dynasty to the were warriors but also lovers and patrons of art; sophisticated royal ladies who loved theatre and ballet; court architects, painters and literary men who interpreted the king's tastes; ceremonies and luxurious parties between hunts and moments of leisure; labyrinths; nymphaeums; parks and fountains famous in most of Europe. 9 St. John International University (SJIU) was founded with the goal of spreading Italian culture and the study of the Italian language throughout the world. Nature is generous in the winter, from December to April, when the Dolomites become the preferred destination for thousands of skiers and snowboarders - but snow sports are not the only attraction here. Cortina d'Ampezzo, the queen of the Dolomites and capital of Nordic and Alpine ski, is located right in the Dolomiti Superski district with Mount Civetta. Venice is one of the most unique cities in the world. Its history began around 1500 years ago on the islands of the lagoon and developed in a way completely unlike any other Italian or European city. The city had strong relationships with the Orient whose influence helped Venice to eventually grow and become one of the major economic powers during the Renaissance. The Venetians decorated their city with beautiful paintings, sculptures and architecture and today Venice is considered one of the art capitals of the world. It is a magical and romantic city that presents itself as a fascinating labyrinth of tiny streets, canals and bridges. One can easily discover the elegant palazzos, impressive museums and churches along with the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge. After shopping in the small boutiques and enjoying the beautiful sights, you can relax at one of the many local restaurants and experience the richness of the Venetian cuisine. Located on the eastern side of central Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and the high Appennine mountains, much of the region remains unspoiled by the ravages of mass tourism. The Atlantic coast is known as a mecca for "sun and sand" holiday makers for decades, but few venture far from the beaches. IInland, perhaps more so than anywhere else in Central Italy, one can find places where time really has stood still. There are numerous medieval streets filled with artisans and merchants selling and showing their traditional Florentine crafts from art to jewelry and leather. One can discover the most authentic spirit of the city by walking through the small cobblestone passages, over the Arno River and visiting the small wine cellars and restaurants. Thousands come to admire the famous art and architecture from the Renaissance such as Botticellis Spring in the Uffizi Museum, Michelangelos David, and Brunelleschis Dome. Florentines have maintained their traditional cuisine which consists of simple dishes always prepared with fresh and hearty ingredients like olive oil, meats, vegetables and bread. They also enjoy elaborate recipes and creations that recall the splendor and decadence of the Renaissance court. Not to be missed: Discover the essence of Florence by walking along the Lungarno and over the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Visit the magnificent Duomo and Baptistry, stop in the Piazza della Signoria to imagine life five centuries ago and then head over to Santa Croce and visit the tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo. At sunset, head up to Piazza Michelangelo and enjoy the panoramic views of the city. 43 TOSCANA Firenze Università degli Studi di Firenze faculties: Agriculture, Architecture, Liberal Arts, Economics, Education, Engineering, Law, Mathematics, Physics, Natural Sci ences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Political Science, Psychology e-mail: scambi.usa@adm.unifi.it web: www.unifi.it Lorenzo de Medici courses: Studio Art and Design, Social and Political Sciences, Italian Language, History, Cinema and Film-making, Art and Human ities, Archaeology, Museum Management, Cultural Studies, Jewelry, Peace Studies, Restoration and Conservation, Theatre, Culinary Arts and Wine Appreciation. e-mail: info@lorenzodemedici.org web: www.lorenzodemedici.org see page 46 Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri courses: Italian language and culture, Internship programs and All Inclusive packages e-mail: study@clida.it web: www.clida.it see page 51 Institute of Italian Studies in affiliation with Drake University (IIS) courses: Italian Art History, Studio Art, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Communica tion, Photography, International Business e-mail: drakeiis@drake.edu web: www.italy.drake.edu/iis Marist International Programs courses: Art History, Business, Communications, Digital Media, Fashion Design and Mer chandising, Graphic Design, History, Italian Language, Jewelry Design, Liter ature, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Political Science, Performing Arts, Studio Art e-mail: ldmitaly@marist.edu web: www.marist.edu/international Scuola Leonardo da Vinci Scuola per l'Arte della Gioielleria PERSEO courses: Wax-Working, Stone Setting, Chasing, Engraving, Jewellery, Gemology, Jewel lery Design e-mail: info@perseoschool.it web: www.perseoschool.it 44 courses: Italian language, Art, Culture, Cooking, Wine, Music e-mail: florence@scuolaleonardo.com web: www.scuolaleonardo.com see page 48 CONTACT www.lorenzodemedici.org - info@lorenzodemedici.org Admission office LdM US US Academic Relations, US Enrollment Services 3600 Bee Caves Road, Suite 205B Austin, TX 78746 USA toll free: + 1 877 765 4LDM (4536) phone: + 1 512 328 INFO (4636) fax: + 1 512 328 4638 LdM Italy Main Campus Via Faenza, 43 50123 Florence, Italy phone: +39 055 287 360 +39 055 287 203 e-mail: info@lorenzodemedici.it web: www.lorenzodemedici.it courses taught in: Italian, English OUR INSTITUTES IN ITALY: Scuola Lorenzo de Medici opened its doors in 1973 as one of the first centers in Florence to specialize in teaching Italian as a foreign language. The charm and beauty of its towns and villages takes visitors back in time. This is the other side of a region that not only offers art, folklore and delicious food, but can also give you an alternative holiday with shopping in lux ury boutiques, days spent in modern health spas or stays in historic residences. The unique archaeological heritage we can admire today in Cam pania is the result of centuries of foreign peoples ruling over this region and influencing its arts and civilization. From the temples of the Magna Graecia and the buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, to the masterpieces kept in the many museums and churches of the region, and the archae ologial excavations of prehis toric sites. Campania is a must if one wishes to explore the development of human history and civilization. www.turismoregionecampania.it Napoli Sorrento www.regione.campania.it CAMPAPANIA Naples has an aristocratic spirit. It is the city of the Spanish and French monarchs with royal palaces, castles and noble villages. The city is set between the sea and hills and faces one of the most beautiful gulfs in the world. Here one finds numerous basilicas, Baroque churches and antique cloisters, including the celebrated Santa Chiara. The flavors of the wine and gastronomic traditions can be experienced in the cafes and historic restaurants where pizza was invented. Not to be missed: Visit the Castle of Ovo that arises from a little island in front of the Santa Lucia quarter. The name derives from a legend by Virgil of an enchanted egg that was placed within its walls. It became the castle of Frederick II who made it his residence and the seat of the royal treasury. Inside are more great sights: the Room of Columns, the Loggia of Arches, the Church of Salvatore and the Towers: Maestra and Normandia. The extraordinary morphological wealth of this region is striking. In Calabria youll find every thing - limpid seas, the sol emn, generous and hospitable mountains, the wild As promonte and fertile country side. Capture the irreducible essence of a land firmly em bedded in traditions. Absorb the extroverted nature of the Calabrese people who know how to be both generous and united. Not many populations have lived such a deep attach ment to a specific way of being which they fiercely safeguard at all costs, while at the same time managing to amalgamate and blend together with the numerous civilisations that they have come in contact with. Calabria is a land of in terwoven cultures, each filled with respect and a sense of sharing. Lamezia Terme Vibo Valentia Soverato Reggio Calabria www.regione.calabria.it CALABRIA Calabria is not simply a land to pass through, but rather, a region to get to know inch by inch, where the variety and beauty of the landscape combines magnificently with the multitude of artistic and cultural aspects that form the basis of our civilisation. With its eight hundred kilometres of coastline Calabria is a region deeply immersed in the Mediterranean. The economy, culture, history, folklore of this region with its thousand colours and perfumes, owe their existence to the sea. Its no wonder that every stretch of coastline is defined by a colour according to the sunsets and dawns and the vegetation flanking its shores: the Costa Viola (Purple coast), Costa dei Gelsomini (jasmine coast), the Sabbie Bianche (white sands) of Tropea, the Sabbie Rosse (red sands) of Crotone. The climate is mild from April to September with the possibility of pleasant excursions all year round. The Tyrrhenian coast alternates between wide beaches and stretches of steep rocky bays with grottoes at the waters edge and inlets reachable only by sea. 87 CALABRIA Tropea, or the pearl of the Tyrrhenian, rising up on a section of the coastline filled with picturesque reefs, steep cliffs and inlets is one of Calabrias greatest tourist attractions. The last town here is Capo Vaticano where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire Calabrian Tyrrhenian coastline. After Capo Vaticano, Costa Viola begins, taking its name from the colour of its remarkable sunsets. Nicotera, the Tyrrhenian Sea Gem, holds an extraordinary patrimony, made of natural beauties, of a millenary history, of culture and traditions. These elements are the result of a magnificent intertwining, composed by typical artistic and architectural beauties. Thanks to its position on the Tyrrhenian Sea, Nicotera still keeps the charme of its particularly pure environment and offers to its visitors a phantasmagoria 88 of lights, colours, perfumes and tastes and a sea whose waves inaugurated myth and history. Reggio Calabria stands in a splendid position on the Straits of Messina, with a magnificent seaside promenade which has been immortalised by poets and writers Gabriele DAnnunzio defined it as the loveliest kilometre in Italy. The Duomo and the Chiesa of the Ottimati are well worth a visit and the Museo Nazionale containing interesting prehistoric and archaeological collections, works of mediaeval and modern art and numismatic collections. One of the greatest attractions of the museum are the Riace Bronzes, statues of two warriors, discovered by chance in 1972 in the sea 300 metres off the coast at a depth of 8 metres. It is a university city, boasting one of the most prestigious faculties of architecture in the country. and mathematician, Pythagoras, settled here in 530BC and founded the harsh Pythagorean school of religious and scientific thought. CALABRIA In the province of Reggio Calabria we can visit Locri and Gerace, both rich in art works and history, the former on the sea, and the latter sitting on the hill above. Locri Epizephyrii represents a pilaster of Calabrian ar chaeology. Solemn, noble Gerace is a town rich in ancient testimonies that rises up on a cone trunk completely in tuff. Its city centre is still intact with historic churches and palazzos. In many of the workshops the ancient trade of making utensils in glazed terracotta with the shapes from Magna Grecia is still carried on. The seaside continues flat and rather linear as far as Crotone, a site of considerable importance in the history of Magna Grecia since the philosopher, physicist 89 CALABRIA Cosenza, known also as the Athens of Calabria is the leading cultural center of the region. The creator of the old town centre was Frederick II of Swabia, who in the thirteenth century transformed the Castle on the Rocca of Brezia. The sixteenth-century witnessed a great cultural flowering, partly as the result of the founding of an Accademia which is still active today, and to the work of Bernardino Telesio. In the piazza where the splendid Palazzo del Governo stands, we can also admire the Teatro Rendano. Among the monumental edifices of Cosenza is the fifth-century Cathedral, entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1184. The interior houses the Gothic sepulchre of Isabella of Aragon, the sarcophagus of Meleagrus and Atalanta and the wooden crucifix named after Telesio. The adjacent Palazzo Arcivescovile houses the Reliquary-cross considered one of the most precious works of art in Calabria. The civic Museum offers an interesting visit in view of the vast repertory of antiquities originating from the surrounding territory, ranging from prehistory to the Roman period. The University of Calabria has its premises in Arcavacata, a district of Cosenza. 90 CALABRIA COSENZA Università della Calabria Campus di Arcavacata (Cosenza) faculties: Economics, Pharmacy, Engineering, Phi losophy and Liberal Arts, Mathematics, Physics and Natural Science, Political Science e-mail: orientamentostudenti@unical.it web: www.unical.it NICOTERA Scuola di Italiano The Italian Language and Culture Centre in Calabria address: Corso Umberto I (Castello Ruffo) 89844 Nicotera (VV) courses: Italian Language, Italian Cook ing, Italian History, Photography, Golf taught in: Italian, English e-mail: info@scuoladitaliano.com web: www.scuoladitaliano.com tel: +39 0963 82 105 fax: +39 178 276 650 TROPEA Piccola Università Italiana The Italian Language and Culture Centre in Tropea courses: e-mail: web: Our course is aimed at employees of in ternational firms who use the Italian lan guage in their work and at university stu dents studying languages and literature. Like a beau tiful woman, Sicily needs a certain type of approach and cannot be easily won over. All one can do is to let himself be seduced, as were the first Mycenaeans when they passed this way to buy obsidian and pumicestone in the Aeolian Islands, when nothing else was known for cutting and polishing. The Phonecians also journeyed along these coasts, establishing trading stations and commerce with every corner of the Medi terranean. These were people who lived in peace, trading with Siculs, Sicans, and Elymians. Sicily welcomes everyone, and has always done so. Everyone becomes Sicilian - you don't have to been born here. Hermocrates of Syracuse made this point way back in 424 BC when he said: We are neither Ionians nor Dorians, we are Sicilians.. We use the hand gestures of the ancient Phoenician merchants, we are as crafty as the Greeks, as captious as the Byzantines, and as blasé as the knights of Andalusia, and we still show great respect for the dead and for the necropolises of all those who died on the island. Because of its location in the heart of the west Mediterranean, Sardinia has been besieged by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Spaniards and the Piedmontese, and all have left important traces of their culture and traditions.
