Peterborough Pride – A Brief History
In 2003, a group of bold and courageous individuals organized Peterborough’s 1st Gay
Pride parade and Mayor Sylvia Sutherland officially proclaimed September 13th as Gay
Pride Day. On that occasion, over 300 people participated in the parade. The proclamation
was a strong statement endorsing the importance of diversity in our community.
www.creemoresprings.com
In 2005, Peterborough Pride participants celebrated the passing of Bill C-38 (the equal
marriage bill) when Parliament spoke clearly and loudly in proclaiming that all couples,
regardless of gender, are equal in value and equal in law in every province and territory
of our country.
For the past 6 years, the Peterborough Pride Committee, made up of representatives
of community organizations along with community volunteers, encouraged by
overwhelming support from post-secondary institutions, individuals, community service
agencies and business people in Peterborough, committed to making the Peterborough
Pride an annual celebration.
Each year the celebrations have expanded to include more events, a bigger parade,
community fair, and pride follies.
Now a Pride Week, the celebration has become a cornerstone opportunity for the
community to gather and express itself publicly.
Show Me Love!
The 7th Peterborough Pride celebration, Show Me Love; reaches back 40 years to the
“summer of love” at Woodstock and the demand for rights and recognition that the
Stonewall riots inspired. Come out, remember our past, take a stand for our future, share
some love, and have the time of your life! We are all worthy of love.
This year the parade ends at Charlotte Street which will be closed to traffic between
George and Water. Stick around and take in the performances, booths, bbq, and more!
