Page 2 Council Corner Message From the Board- Message From the Manager– Ron Botello, Board Chairman Sergio Salazar, General Manager The Club at Sonterra is the place to be. My family, including my grandsons, attended the 4th of July celebration and it was awesome. Took the boys to the pool and they were able to play games while the rest of us chilled out and enjoyed the pool side service and great company. The evening events were done extremely well also, even with the showers. Of course concluded by one of the best fireworks displays you’ll see anywhere in San Antonio. It was great seeing members and guests enjoying the festivities that the Sonterra staff worked so hard to provide. It made me proud to be a member and proud to be an American. I also had the privilege of sharing lunch with the legendary Lee Trevino and his son. Lee’s son was preparing for a tournament to be played at our course and wanted to get in a practice round with his Dad. Lee had some great comments about our North course and asked if we knew what a gem we had. I believe Jeff Hunter is providing a little more detail in his article this month. I will say this, I thought I talked a lot; Lee is the master of conversation and shared some stories about the tour and his friendship with fellow member Frank Connor. It was great sharing time with Lee and hearing positive comments about our club. Work has begun on the renovation of the bar in the main clubhouse. I know everyone will be pleased when this is completed and I can’t wait to see the final result. I hope many of you took advantage of the Chairman’s Challenge and invited guests to a round of golf on us, no green fee. We are struggling to meet our next goal for the renovation of the 19th hole, please consider inviting your friends to join the best country club in town and one that is actually growing and providing a wide range of activities for everyone. I’m proud to be a member of The Club at Sonterra, I hope you feel the same. If you are, share this with those that would like to be a member also. Enjoy the remainder of the summer! Great Firework shots from Lisa Abrams! Gorgeous shot by Mark Rodriguez. The Boecking Family! Great picture Mada Al-jundi! It is hard to believe that August is already here. It seems odd that the children will already be going back to school. After a slow start to the year, we seem to have hit our full stride later in the year than usual. Both golf courses are in great shape and the clubhouse looks better every day. Both restrooms in the main clubhouse have now been completed and new flooring has been installed in the sports grill and in the tennis pro shop. The remodeling of the lounge in the main clubhouse will begin the second week of this month and is scheduled to be complete in three weeks. Many members have asked what we will do for a main bar during the renovation and we have decided to create “Sonterra’s Traveling Saloon.” Every few days, we will theme a different room in the clubhouse and incorporate that theme into the drink specials and music. More information will be available through our club emails and Facebook. We are still 20-25 net golf members away from triggering the start of the 19th hole/Ivy Room renovation. The re-invention of this space would be a huge milestone and would be a benefit to our club in the future. While a few private clubs in the area have cut back on member dining hours and have even eliminated dining on Saturday evenings and Sunday brunches at their club, we have continued to add events and music to encourage the use of the club. We need to create a place that encourages use and becomes more of a member destination. If you know anybody who you think may be interested in joining please contact Deborah Routon or myself. Thank you for being a Member, Sergio Salazar Teresa Nguyen’s daughter Elena enjoying a snow cone at the pool. Another great picture! Thank you Maru Castillo for sharing! Beautiful girls sent to us from Mary Herrera. Kathy Zywina fireworks! Kathy Schneider’s daughter, Sarah Stringfellow, waiting for the rain shower to pass. Beautiful Sky shared by Stefanie Schindler. Sonterra Clubs within a Club Page 5 This year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I. To celebrate this anniversary your club has pressed into service, Col. Joe and Col. Janet Robinson authors of the recent book "The Great War Dawning." In a series of three presentations, we will offer subjects that should tickle the interest of many amateur historians. We invite you to sit back, have a drink and listen to one or more of these presentations – all of which will contain: "Things we never learned in school." The first presentation was held on (July 29). "The German Schlieffen Plan, August 1914." The second presentation (August 5) is for everyone – we have grown up reading and hearing about scandals and issues with the British Royal family. Well Imperial Germany had twenty-one Royal families. Entitled "Scandals and Gossip about the Royal Families of Imperial Germany," we will take a humorous view of scandal, infidelity, insanity, diseases, and one of the "original cougars." The third presentation (August 12) is held on the exact anniversary of the battle. Transpiring eight days after the start of World War I This is a littleknown story of an engagement between Germany and Belgium. Based on their upcoming book "The Last Great Cavalry Charge," you will learn about what the Belgians refer to as the "Battle of the Silver Helmets." Four mounted German cavalry regiments charge their way into history and glory. After eight separate charges they left behind 1000 dead horses. Because there were no English-speaking participants and the British forces were just starting to land on the European continent not much has been handed down to us in English-language texts. The Germans were not really proud of their performance and did not publicize this debacle. You must reserve a seat with the receptionist but there is no charge. They start at 7 o'clock on three consecutive Tuesday nights. Beat the heat and try the air-conditioning! Fitness Boot Camp at Sonterra Boot camp Instructor Carlos Torres has created a boot camp designed to improve your health and fitness level. Let’s PARTY!!!! And get in shape! Page 6 Golf News- Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf Often times we come to Sonterra through the same door. We fail to look at the club as if we were new to it and rob ourselves of seeing Sonterra and what it has to offer. This week I had the pleasure of hosting Lee Trevino, his son, and wife along with one of his good friends from San Antonio. I first met Lee some thirty years ago when I worked the tour and as you would expect Lee was Lee. Talkative, outgoing and friendly to all that approached. However, Lee pulled me aside and said “Jeff, do your members know just what they have here?” My reply, some do. Lee then proceeded to tell me just how much he loved the North Course, how this quickly became one of his favorite courses in Texas, and just how beautiful the club was. This man has won over 80 tournaments in his career including 6 majors. He has seen the world through golf and reminded me of just how beautiful Sonterra is. What a great reminder to all of us! Treat Sonterra as it deserves to be treated. Fill those divots, share carts and let us all try to leave the club and courses in better shape than we found them. Walk through a different door and view her with different eyes. Your pride and your want to share with friends might and should grow exponentially. CONGRATULATIONS to our men’s Senior Club Champion, Harry Ramirez. Three solid rounds of golf including a 67 on the South Course propelled Harry to victory. Harry takes the crown from last years champion, Rhett Morrow, whose game title defense fell a little short. Thank you to all who participated. Please keep us informed and feel free to ask those that may be walking, jogging, riding bikes, or abusing club grounds, for a name or member number. Many members have told me about non members using the club in the evening or Mondays, yet they won’t give me a name. I am more than willing to protect your club, but you must be willing to give me names so that I can make a phone call. Help us help you!! Golf Corner **Fairway Feats** Mike Slay– HOLE IN ONE- North #14 Travis Hooper – Eagle #8 South Tish Rosenthal- Eagle #7 North Dino DelaFuente – Eagle #5 North Bob Serna – Eagle #1 North Bob Germain shot his age twice in a Month! On the Greens– Donny Latham, Golf Course Superintendent July has come and gone and we actually received some much needed beneficial rainfall. This is rare for July but we certainly needed it. The courses are very healthy and the turf is growing like crazy. We aerified our South course Emerald greens on July 28 and the greens are recovering quickly. We will aerify our North course MiniVerde greens on August 18. This process, although disruptive to member play, is a necessary agronomic practice that we must do to eliminate thatch, alleviate compaction and provide oxygen to the root zone. This process is paramount to maintaining the high level of greens conditions that you all expect. I would like to discuss what maintenance is being done to our bunkers. Several years ago the North course bunkers were renovated and all the sand was removed, liners installed and new sand was installed. As many of you have noticed, the liner has been pulled up on many of the greenside bunkers. We are continually pulling more liner out of these bunkers as it is exposed. I purchased a tiller that we use in these bunkers to soften the sand that is silted over. When we receive these much needed rain events, often times our sand is washed down off the face of the bunkers and sand, silt and soil is mixed together. This makes the surface of the bunkers very firm, as if there is not enough sand in the bunkers. Our goal is to scrape this silt off the top and till the sand up. This will help our greenside bunkers remain soft and easier to hit an elevated shot. We also added sand to many of our bunkers on both North and South that were getting thin. We also ordered 25 new rakes in July and will continue to purchase new rakes in the upcoming months to replace some of the broken, splintered handled or old rakes. As we get into August and the rest of the summer, as always, I ask that you avoid traffic areas, avoid driving in the roughs and please follow any and all signs that are posted so that we may continue to have great course conditions the rest of the year. Thank You ALL for Being a Member. With all the activities here at the club, and getting in those family trips, fall just sneaked up on us. We here in the tennis shop are in fall mode preparation. We have summer leagues ending, summer junior camps ending, summer clothes going on sale and everyone is in preparation for the fall leagues. We had a great time at our annual 4th of July Mixer. There were 70 adults and 25 juniors that played for three hours and this time the rain held out for us. We played, we swam, we ate, we rested and then we came back for the festivities that evening of fireworks and more eating and partying. What a day! August is again one of those transition months. As I said earlier there is a lot ending and a lot starting. Team numbers have already been given out in July and teams are forming if not already formed. The mid-season ratings came out in July and there is now some shuffling going on with members getting rated up or down. Please contact the shop if you need help finding a team – we want you here on a Sonterra team. I must congratulate Sonterra league tennis once again for having a great first half of the year. We’ve had a mixed doubles team go to Hawaii, we have a World Team Tennis team going to Kansas, we have many teams going to sectionals in Dallas this month, we have our combo teams sweeping out the competition 5 out of 7 divisions, we had teams go to Nationals, we have one of our pros that won the men’s 45’s doubles in Worlds Cup in Turkey and we have a whole page of winners every month in our Winner’s Circle section. Congratulations to all our members and thank you for making Sonterra the place to be for fun tennis, competitive tennis and family tennis. Stay tuned for all the upcoming events via e-mail, bulletin board, word of mouth, smoke signals and any other way we can get the word out.
