44th Annual Fourth of July Fun!
F
reedom has its life in the hearts, the
actions, the spirit of men and so it must be
daily earned and refreshed — else like a flower

As I drive by the clubhouse several times
every day, it’s great to see all the activity
going on there. The pool is open all week,
swim team continues to practice and it
feels like summer has returned to Sleepy
Hollow again. Though the schools have let
out for summer, I want to remind you to
please drive safely. There are lots of kids walking and riding bikes.
I have heard rumors that some people
think we will close the pool early for construction of our new club house. This is
simply NOT TRUE! As I have written
in past letters, there will be no interruptions of pool hours this year. So if you
haven’t done so yet, don’t hesitate to join
the pool this year. Our plans to rebuild
the Clubhouse are moving forward and
we hope to have final approval for permits
before this letter goes to print. Any future
construction will happen after the pool
has closed for the off-season in the fall.
There’s still time to donate to this great,
community legacy.
While we are on the subject of the Clubhouse, I hope you will make it to what
will be the 44th annual, Fourth of July
parade. By the way, the first two parades
were organized by the Horsemen’s Assoc.
of Sleepy Hollow (HASH). There were a
large number of horses, a fire truck, the
Prince Charles Bagpipe Band, the Natural
Gas Jazz group on a flatbed truck, the 4H
Mounted Flag bearers, Boy Scouts, Cub
Scouts, Brownies, the Legend Club, and
many others. This was before the Swim
Team existed. Needless to say, the parade
became a great Sleepy Hollow tradition! I
urge you to come out and support our flag
and our wonderful neighborhood.
We will begin with the annual Fun Run/
Walk with registration at 9:15 a.m., start
is 10:00 a.m. at Deer Hollow Rd. and
Butterfield. The parade will start at the
same location at 11:00 a.m. and end at the
Clubhouse. There will be swimming, food,
drinks and entertainment for the kids and
adults with lunch sponsored by the swim
team immediately after the parade. The
party will continue at 5:00 p.m. with more
live music (bring your dancing shoes), oysters, beer and wine, Dave Nichol’s famous
pulled-pork sandwiches and much more!
This is my favorite event of the year. Don’t
miss it!
Calling All Cars! If you have a classic car,
truck, muscle car, or idea for a cool float,
bring it on! We want you in our parade! So
dust it off, crank it up, wax on and bring
it to the parade start and we’ll get you in
there! Call your friends, long-lost cousins
or family from Fresno and tell them to get
out to Sleepy Hollow to enjoy the 4th the
way it was meant to be!
I would be remiss to not thank our Board
members Brad Schauer and John Van Der
Wal for organizing one of the best Happy
Hour Socials on June 6th. Wow! We served
over 200 dinners and consumed many beverages together. Also thanks to those who
helped, including; Pim Brouwer, John Richard and Holly Briese for the life guards and
countless others. Great job!
Make sure you put September 20 on your
calendar – the second annual Sleepy Hollow Creek Cleaning Event. Creek Corps
leaders and Sleepy Hollow residents Eric
Riemer, Mark Anderson, and James Baigrie
will be working with trained volunteers to
do trimming and vegetation/debris removal
in the creek as needed. Please read the
“Notice to All Sleepy Hollow CreekSide Residents” in this bulletin for more
information. And thank you for supporting
this important effort!

Trees, Roads
and Creek Need
Attention
Summer has arrived
and I hope you have an
opportunity to relax, take a vacation and
enjoy your favorite summertime activities. Just a reminder that while summer
generally means less traffic, there are
still plenty of bikes and walkers on our
local streets and roads. So please drive
with care. Thank you in advance for
being cautious!
Eucalyptus Trees on Butterfield
Several residents have contacted my
office expressing concern about the state
of the eucalyptus trees on Butterfield
Road. I, too, had noticed their condition – browning limbs and leaves – and
was concerned about their health and
potential safety issues. As a result of this
collective concern, I asked the County’s
public works department to conduct an
assessment of the eucalyptus trees on
Butterfield and Legend Road covering
health condition, structural condition,
and hazard potential.
The arborist found that all eucalyptus
trees are in general good health. What
we are seeing is akin to frost bite – primarily cosmetic – leaves, smaller branches “burnt” by the extended period of dry,
cold weather during the winter. While
eucalyptus trees are drought resistant,
they are fairly sensitive to frost damage,
depending on temperature lows and
duration. The arborist recommended
some trimming/minor pruning which
has been underway, but did not recommend taking any of the trees down,
or major pruning. The arborist will be
doing a follow-up “exam” in the Fall and
I will report back to the community.
Cottonwood Trees on Butterfield
While in the neighborhood, the arborist
was also asked to do a complete assessment of the cottonwood trees on Butterfield and found that several of the

trees have extensive decay, poor structure
and limb failure. The arborist recommended that four trees be removed,
given they are a public safety issue. The
arborist also recommended crown reduction on the remaining trees.
The plan is for the work to begin the
week of June 23 and be completed by
July 4. My office will be reaching out to
neighbors directly affected in advance of
the work.
Summer Roadwork
County roadwork to occur this summer
in the Hollow will include the resurfacing
of Fawn Drive from Butterfield to end,
Fawn Court from Fawn Drive to end,
Garden Rock from Crane to end, Crane
from Van Winkle to end of County maintained section. Public works anticipates
the work will start in mid to late July
and be completed by October. Affected
residents will be notified in advance. No
roads will be closed, but there may be
some minor inconvenience and delays.

Creek Workshop and Fall Clean Up
Once again this Fall, the Creek Committee will be hosting two events – a
workshop and annual creek cleaning day.
We heard from several residents last year
that they were interested in learning
more about creek bank stabilization/erosion control/restoration, so our workshop
this year will be hands-on and focused on
what streamside work you can do on your
property to address these issues.
The second annual SHHA creek cleaning
event will be held on Saturday, September 20, with efforts being led again by our
Creek Corps leaders and Sleepy Hollow
residents Eric Riemer, Mark Anderson
and James Baigrie. For all residents living on the creek – please pay special
attention to the Creek Committee
notice in this bulletin – we’d like to
hear from you if you know of potential problem areas that need to be
addressed and/or if you’d like to “opt
out” of having volunteers in your area
of the creek.

creek and flood concerns. Storm waters
flow off all our properties!

Championship Meet July 12
Sleepy Hollow Presbyterian Church
Our swimmers continued their winning ways in May
and June with victories over the Seals, Stingrays,
Waterdevils, and Tidalwaves. They also defeated our
archrivals, the Scott Valley Sea Serpents, on June 14th. It was
an amazing day and a classy victory...go Sea Lions! Fun events
continued with SLIC stores and Friday treats, pizza night and
a wild time at Waterworld. We are looking forward to the 4th
of July parade and our Championship Meet on July 12th. Keep
your fingers crossed for our 21st title!

HOA Report: June Meeting Minutes

Meeting brought to order at 7 p.m.
Board Members present: Sean Solway,
Pim Brouwer, Maria Young, Brad Schauer,

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Old Business:
John Grubb – Sleepy Hollow
Charitable Foundation.
Fundraising from residents is at $431,000
which is up 10K from last month. A
mailing went out and arrived Monday/
Tuesday (June 9/10). The thermometer is
displayed on Butterfield at the entrance
to the Hollow. The amount needs to
be updated. County planning has told
the SHCF that they will green light the
design and a decision of record will be
published next week. There will be a twoweek window for appeal. If the design is
appealed it will go in front of a committee for final decision.
The agency agreement between the
SHCF and SHHA is still in the hands
with the legal advisors.
After the design is approved, the next
step will be to get construction drawings
and submit those to get construction permits. A general contractor will be hired,
but not until the agency agreement is
approved. The SHFD hasn’t made a decision, but once they make their decision
they will send an letter of intent so that
we are all on the same page.
New Business:
John Van der Wal– Social Hour
The first social hour on June 6 was a great
success. It was “crazy” and “crowded.”
The net revenue was $1062.44.
Some notes for the next happy hour in
August: Order more beer and food (the
crowd was larger than expected)
There was an issue with the CC/Internet
connection so using credit cards was a
problem. If we go with all cash, we need
to have more small bills to make change.
We also are considering doing tickets
so the bartenders don’t have to make
change.

The other happy hours are going to be
the Luau – August 1 and September 12 –
live music? Rich Shortall’s band??
Pool
Pool check in. Is it working? The lifeguards are using an old ipad for check-in
and we’re being more militant.
Pool Membership
316 members and 140 non-resident pool
members. Some homeowners may be
confused about donation levels and
homeowners dues in 2013 versus 2014.
Pool is overloaded? Do we need to limit
the number of pool memberships? Is
there a max for the number of people
who can be in the pool at a time?
Swim team will be finished soon so
attendance will dwindle. Tomorrow is
the last day of school so that may affect
the attendance as well. This is a year for
observation and the electronic check in
may help the who/when.
New Homeowners
Pim has delivered plants and gift cards
to new homeowners and will do a second
round soon.
Lisa Drive. Wilder Road in the
Hollow
An individual in Fairfax is seeking motor
vehicle access from Fairfax via an easement on Lisa Drive to Butterfield Road.
The Board is going to contact Katie Rice
and get the County involved.
Top of Fawn
Gate being put at the top of Fawn (700)
and the neighbors are upset. Pim reports
that the gate is red-tagged. Until later…

Andy Van Dam passed away this
June, losing a battle to cancer. He
and his wife Nan were 37-year residents of Sleepy Hollow, loving it’s
glorious lifestyle and beauty. (Sent

George Nixon, a much beloved
resident of Sleepy Hollow, died
in Tasmania on June 6. He is
survived by his wife Heather, son
George IV and daughter Vanessa.
They lived in Sleepy Hollow for
over 40 years and their children
attended school here. He was the
first African-American pilot for
