in the late 1800s, freed slave Matt Gardner purchased part
of his former owner’s Elkton land to build a farm and start
one of the first African-American schools in the area; his
homestead is now a museum. Pulaski commemorates the
struggles of the Cherokee people at the new Trail of Tears
Interpretive Center.
Also rich in Civil War history, MAURY COUNTY is
considered “Antebellum Homes Capital of Tennessee.” It
boasts a magnificently restored courthouse; a bustling town
square with unique shops, antique stores and restaurants;
and the President James K. Polk Ancestral Home &
Presidential Hall.

the TN River & near the Buffalo River. With Mousetail Landing State Park
