June 2016 - Hastings Runners
Hastings Runners Newsletter June 2016 Affiliated to England Athletics, South of England Athletic Association and Sussex County Amateur Athletic Association http://www.hastingsrunners.org.uk BRITISH MASTERS ATHLETIC FEDERATION NATIONAL ROAD RELAYS, SUTTON PARK, 14TH MAY Many congrats to the HR ladies team who claimed a medal in the BMAF National Road Relays for the 3rd successive year in the FV65 plus category. Each member of the team ran an undulating 3mile leg on tarmac roads within the park in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham and the combined time of 81mins 45secs was only bettered by Wolds Vets RC and Sale Harriers. Christine Sanderson ran the opening leg in 27.44; Yock Lin Richardson clocked 28.42 for the second leg; Sylvia Huggett covered the third leg in 25.19 - the fourth fastest time of the day in this category. Both Christine and Yocklin were recruited from Hastings parkrun just before the entry deadline, and had never raced at a major championship's before! Read Christine's account below. From Park Run to national bronze. The weekly parkrun in Hastings has given me an amazing new lease of life in my seventies. For most of my married life I was the passive supporter of a running family: “I look after the coats” I used to tell people when they asked me why I didn’t run too. Then, at the age of 44, I started jogging and trained for the Hastings Half marathon. I became hooked on the exhilaration that running brings, 1 learning that exercise is mind-relaxing as well as a way of keeping fit. Joining Hastings AC like the rest of the family, over the next twenty years or so I ran in various local races, though never competing any further away than East Sussex. By my early 60s I had given up racing, just doing regular jogging from home over fairly short distances. Of course I missed the fun and friendships of competition but I thought I was too old to race. About a year ago, just before turning 72, I decided to try the local parkrun. I found it really motivating, not only because it gave me a chance to enjoy socialising with other runners again, but because of the way it is so well organised, giving immediate on-line results with age-related scores. As you get older, it can be discouraging to know your times have slowed so much but the age-related scores give a new incentive, a new chance to score a Personal Best (PB). The whole ethos of the Park Run is to accept people of all shapes, sizes and ages and to encourage them to reach their own PBS. It can be inspiring to see not only the talented winners but also to see ordinary people glowing as they try to achieve their best. Now, once again, I am hooked on racing. Then, to top it all, our event director Nick asked me to join Hastings Runners who needed more women over 65 to make up a team for the British Masters (BMAF) National Road Race Relays in Sutton Park, Birmingham on May 14th. My first National race at the age of 72! I cannot put into words the joy I felt when, along with my two team-mates, I received a bronze medal at that event! Our fastest team-member, Sylvia Huggett, is an experienced runner with many achievements in her running career. But my other team-mate, Yock Lin Richardson, was even more astonished than I was - the parkruns last year were the start of her running career and she too is now over 70. But at that moment the years melted away and we were just three girls having a great weekend away. Thank you Park Run for showing me that age is not necessarily an obstacle! Many thanks to our excellent core team including corun directors Arrianne Callow, Anthony Gardner, Helen Brown, Ken and Jane Hughes. This is a community event, relying exclusively on volunteers ...so if you've been running regularly but haven't helped out yet; then please contact hastingshelpers@parkrun.com There are lots of volunteer roles to fill from 18th June onwards! Hastings Runners highlights for past month included a spectacular photo-bombing of the Hughes family clan by the other pacers on 4th June wearing tamashanters, and a pre-run ode instead of the usual briefing! 14th May ....... Many of the track regulars have come from parkrun, and have made huge improvements in their race times - especially at 5kms. You can all improve if you are prepared to put in some hard work, whether your target is to run a sub 35mins or sub 65mins 10kms! The whole session including warm up and warm down lasts 50 – 60 mins; during which time most runners will have only spent 15 – 20mins running anaerobically (ie getting into oxygen debt). The staggered start, with everyone setting off at the same time but at various intervals dotted round the track, makes for some very tightly contested reps and gives everyone an incentive. Meet 18.20pm for 18.30pm prompt start at William Parker athletics track in Parkstone Road, Hastings; parking close by in Park Avenue, off Park View. Cost £2.00pp; under 18s free. Running Tip of the Month “Treat the first half of any race as a fast-paced training run so that there will be plenty in the tank for the second half.” GRIJSLOKE WEEKEND AUGUST 26th to 28th 2016. This packed weekend starts with meeting early Friday morning travelling to France/Belgium, visiting a town for lunch and maybe visiting a place of interest. We’ll then move on to Grijsloke to meet our hosts at about 5.30pm. The race is on Saturday at lunch time, there is a 6.7k (1 lap) and a 18.9k (3 laps) one short, two long. In the evening there is a get together for drinks and sandwiches in Grijsloke’s clubhouse. On Sunday we go to nearby woods for a short run or walk. Afterwards it’s back to the clubhouse at lunchtime for more drinks and a lovely roast gammon, frittes and salad lunch (not to be missed!!!!!). We depart the clubhouse at about 3.00pm for home. So if you are thinking of joining us and can drive it would be very helpful if you can take your car as we car share and are always short of space. If you’d like to book a space please let me know as soon as possible, bookings for ferries and trains, especially at a bank holiday weekends, always go fast.
