marketplace. By law, an antique is an item
that’s at least 100 years old. A collectible is
just about anything that people collect. The
age of a collectible is not important, except if
an item is labeled a vintage collectible which
means it is at least 50 years old. A reproduction
is an item created to look like an original, but
that has no value in the antiques world.

hen buying a
new home or
remodeling an
existing one, many people get caught up in the
selection of hardwood
flooring or cabinet colors
and can sometimes forget
about adding real value
to a home — specifically
with the right combination of energy-saving solutions and
an optimal heating and cooling (HVAC) system. What’s behind the walls and in the attic, basement or utility closet can
really impact a home’s value and performance and lead to
greater energy savings and long-term buyer satisfaction.
The average homeowner spends approximately $1,900 a
year on energy bills. According to the U.S. Department of
Energy, heating and cooling account for about 56 percent of
a typical home’s energy usage, making it the largest energy
expense for most homes.
A natural first step to achieving an energy-efficient home
is to install a high-efficiency heating and cooling system.
Many of today’s top builders and contractors are turning to
the experts for their full line of energy-efficient solutions
to help reduce energy use in homes without pricing buyers
out of the market. Plus, many energy-efficient products meet
or exceed federal energy requirements and are Energy Star
compliant.
Though investing in energy-efficient heating and cooling
may have the biggest impact on reducing household energy
use, homeowners should approach energy efficiency from a
more holistic perspective.
A highly efficient system should work in concert with
high-quality insulation, water heater, windows, roofing,
light fixtures and energy-efficient appliances to ensure the
greatest energy savings. Be sure to talk with a homebuilder
or contractor about how these various systems work together
to determine the right solution based on the style of home
and climate.
So while contemplating what color to paint the master
bedroom, think about what’s in the utility closet, too. It’ll
reduce future energy use and contribute to a comfortable
home.

Art that’s too large will overwhelm and
art that’s too small will be lost and look out
of proportion. The bolder the art, the more
room it needs to breathe. Measure the space
you want to hang the art and leave enough
“white space” so the painting will not feel

with a light color, as it will hold less heat
beneath and have a lower temperature. You
can also reduce heat beneath the awning by

ue to new mortgage regulations that went
into effect in early 2014, lenders may be
extra diligent when underwriting home loans.
The rules put pressure on lenders to verify
that borrowers have the ability to repay their
loans. Keep good records of your finances,

I
f you have a wet basement problem, try this
to identify the source of the water. Cut a
1-foot square of aluminum foil and tape the
square to the basement wall that collects
the most water with masking tape and leave
for 24 hours. Then look at the foil to see if
there are beads of water on the outside. This
condensation issue can be helped by using a
dehumidifier, opening windows, and using a
fan in the basement to create air movement.

it’s something to be done in moderation. To prevent shoulder problems,
avoid long reaches with your arms. Alternate raking on your left and right
side every 5 to 10 pulls for a more balanced muscular response. Practice brief
periods of raking interspersed with leaf collecting. Frequently changing body
positions will emphasize different muscle groups and help prevent injuries.
When bending down to collect leaves, flex your knees rather than bend your
back. You don’t have to clear the whole yard in a single session. Spend about one

a home’s energy efficiency. You can reduce
energy costs by installing energy-efficient
windows and doors in your home. If your

Adding storm windows can reduce air
leakage and improve comfort. Caulking and
weather-stripping can reduce air leakage
around windows. Use caulk for stationary
cracks, gaps, or joints less than one-quarter

windows. Window treatments or coverings can reduce heat
loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Most window

Home Improvement Glossary
Understanding the terminology used in home improvement and construction industries can help
homeowners be better informed and involved in projects around their homes. The following are
some common industry terms.
Aggregate – Crushed rock used in many asphalt applications.
Ampacity – The amount of current a wire can carry safely.
Asbestos – A fibrous material that was once used widely in building materials but is linked to cancers
of the lung cavity.
Backfill – Soil or gravel used to fill in against a foundation.
Beam – Horizontal framing member designed to carry a load from joists or a roof.
Butt Joint – Lumber pieces joined at the end.
Casement Window – A window with hinges on one of the vertical sides making it swing open like a door.
Caulking – Flexible material used to seal a gap between two surfaces.
Code – Rules set forth by a governing institution to determine fair and safe trade practices.
Curing – A process that brings paint or masonry materials to their final, durable form.
Drywall – A wall finish made from gypsum plaster encased in a thin cardboard.
Estimate – The anticipated cost of materials and labor for a project.
Fixed Price Contract – A contract with a set price for the work.
Flashing – Sheet metal or roll roofing pieces fit to the joint of any roof intersection or projection.
Footing – Widened ground base of a foundation to support foundation of piers.
Framing – The structural wooden elements of most homes.
GFI – A ground fault current interrupter, which is an electrical device used to prevent injury from contact
with electrical appliances.
Jamb – The exposed upright part on each side of a window frame or door frame.
Level – A tool to check for level or plumb surfaces.
Permit – A legal authorization to begin a work project.
Pitch – The slope of incline on a roof.
Rebar – Steel rods that are imbedded in concrete for stability.
Shim – A tapered piece of wood used to level and secure a structure.
Stud – Vertical parts of framing placed 16 or 24 inches apart.
Watt – A measure of the electrical requirement of an appliance.
