1.1 - THE RACE
The Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - Compressport is organized by DIÁRIO de Notícias da Madeira in partnership with Camara Municipal do Funchal
and Compressport, under the Ecotrail. It is a competitive timed race through nature areas mostly over non-paved trails. It consists of four distinct
races with different distances and different demanding standards.
The Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – 80 Compressport covers approximately 80Km distance and about 5.500 D+. The race will start and finish in the
centre of Funchal (Avenida Arriaga) although most of the race will take place on the hills overlooking the city. It will be run in a single leg, at a free
pace, with precise time barriers. The start will be on Saturday, 22 October 2016 at 6:00.
The Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – 40 Compressport covers approximately 40km, about 2.500 D+. This race will start at São Roque and finish at
Funchal (Avenida Arriaga). It will be run in a single leg, at a free pace, with precise time barriers. Departure will be on Saturday, 22 October at 7:30.
The Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – 25 Compressport covers approximately 25km, about 1.500 D+. This race will start at Parque Ecológico do Funchal
and finish at Funchal (Avenida Arriaga). The race will be run in a single leg, at a free pace, with precise time barriers. Departure will be on Saturday,
22 October at 9:30
The Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – 15 Compressport covers approximately 40km, about 2.500 D+. This race will start at Miradouro do Pico dos
Barcelos and finish at Funchal (Avenida Arriaga and it will be run in a single leg, at a free pace, with precise time barriers. Departure will be on
Saturday, 22 October at 11:00.
1.2 – REGULATIONS
All those who enter for the different Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – Compressport races tacitly agree with these regulations. Any situation not covered
there in will be subject to the appreciation and decision of the Jury of the Race.
1.3 - CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RACE
The Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – Compressport is by nature a semi self sufficient race. During the course, there will be aid stations where liquid and
solid foods will be provided, to be consumed at the station. Regarding liquids, while other drinks are available, only water may be used for refilling
containers or hydration packs brought by the athlete.
Each athlete/participant, when leaving the station, shall guarantee that he/she has the quantity of food and water needed for own consumption until
the next aid station.
Assistance may be given to participants in the areas planned for that purpose (aid stations and control posts) only by a person with identification
supplied by the organization.
It is strictly prohibited for any person who is not a duly registered competitor to accompany another at any point during the course.
1.4 – NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
The maximum number of participants for the Ecotrail Funchal – Madeira – Compressport is 500 per race.
1.5 – CONDITIONS OF REGISTRATION
The different Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – Compressport Races are open to male and female participants in good physical conditions and who will
abide by these Regulations.
The weather conditions may be adverse even in October (wind, cold, rain and even snow). Good training and a true sense of personal autonomy are
essential for the success of this individual adventure.
Entry to the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 80 km Compressport and Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 40 km Compressport is open to all athletes aged 18
or over at the time of the race, professionals or not. In the case of the 80Km race, it is strongly recommended that the participant has already
completed a trail-running of at least 42Km.
Entry to Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 25 km Compressport and Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 15 km Compressport is open to all athletes over the age
of 16 at the time of the race, professionals or not.
To enter the race the entrants have to submit the Statement of Liability duly filled in at the Secretariat of the Race at the time of the check in. Failure
to submit the document duly filled in will lead to cancellation of the registration, without the right to a refund.
The athletes should be aware of the complexity of the race therefore, they are to be physically and mentally prepared for the special characteristics
and requirements of the course. Nevertheless, we draw the attention to all participants for the possibility of problems of extreme fatigue during the
race, associated to muscle and joint pains, problems of digestion among others. Should such situations arise, the Organization will assist the
athletes whenever deemed necessary or whenever assistance is requested. The participants themselves should be prepared to overcome such
situations as best as possible.

It is mandatory that the check-in be done at the places and times announced previously and the athlete or his/her legal representative has to show
identification (citizen card, ID or passport). The bibs cannot be collected on the day of the race, except in cases of force majeure agreed by the
Organizing Committee.
1.6 – REGISTRATIONS
The registrations for the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – Compressport races can be done:
• On www.ecotrailmadeira.com, the official site of the race.
• At the Diário de Notícias da Madeira shop, at Rua Dr Fernão de Ornelas, 56 R/C– 9054-153 Funchal.

1.7 – FEE AND ENTRY DATES

To the above amount, the participant may add €5.00 cancellation fee. Payment of this fee entitles the participant to a refund, should the conditions
provided for cancellation be met.
Registrations will be considered valid and effective once the registration fee has been paid and validation of the registration will depend on the
reception of the payment confirmation with the full name of the participant or registration number
The registration fee includes:
- Personal accident insurance;
- Supply of solids and liquids during the race, for which the participant has entered, at the designated refreshment points:
- Meal on arrival;
- First aid at designated rescue points;
- Transport from the centre of Funchal (to be designated later by the Organization) to the place of departure of the different races (where
appropriate);
- Transport from the closest spot that can be accessed by car to the arrival point/secretariat, in case of withdrawal or if banned by the Organization
from continuing the race:
- Access to ecological showers after the race;
- A Digital Certificate of Participation (to be downloaded later)
- Participation Toolkit;
- Kit Finisher (exclusively for athletes who finish the race).
1.8 – CANCELLATION OF ENTRY
Each and any cancellation for the race is to be communicated to the Organization by email or registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt
sent to the contacts referred on the last page of these Regulations.
Request for reimbursement should be sent to the organisation of Funchal – Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – Compressport attaching the
corresponding proof, in accordance with the terms of the paragraph that follows, within a maximum period of ten days following the event.

• Accident or serious illnesses which will entitle to sick leave of over 3 days.
• Death or disablement
• Acute illness requiring hospitalization
• Death of the partner, spouse or direct descendent or one of the parents within the 30 days prior to the event in question.
All the requests for reimbursement will be analyzed within the period of three months following the races Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira –
Compressport. No reimbursement will be made outside the conditions provided for in these regulations or to any participant who had not enrolled in
the registration cancelation guarantee / insurance.

Due to unexpected weather conditions during the race, and the demanding conditions of the ground, the following material is also recommended.

1.10 – RACE BIB AND BRACELETS
The bib and bracelet will be delivered to participants at check-in and each participant is to produce an ID with a photo.
The bib must be permanently attached and visible throughout the entire race. It should be worn over the clothing at all times and not placed on the
satchel or legs. The name of the partner and logos may not be changed or hidden.
The bracelet, if supplied, must be worn on the wrist at all times during the event. It will be necessary for accessing not only the race, but the various
facilities, events and services reserved for participants (transportation, bag deposits, showers, etc.).
Race bibs are personal and non-transferable. No exchanges are allowed
1.11 – TIMING CHIP
When race bibs are delivered, an electronic chip is also given to each runner for time tracking. It should be attached according to instructions at
check-in. Each participant is responsible for the correct use and preservation of the chip. The participant cannot be timed if:
• The chip is not being used;
• The chip is lost;
• The chip is damaged;
• The chip is not used in accordance with the instructions of the organisation.
Should the chip be out of order or mislaid, the athlete has to communicate such fact to the organization at the next check point soon after the fault is
detected.
1.12 – CHANGE OF CLOTHES
Each participant of the Eco Trail Funchal – Madeira – 80 Km Compressport will be given two bags for clothing and other personal hygiene items: one
for a change of clothes at the mid-point of the race (Alegria), the other for storing belongings for the finish.
Each participant of the Eco Trail Funchal – Madeira – 40 Km Compressport as well as of the Eco Trail Funchal – Madeira – 25 Km Compressport and
Eco Trail Funchal – Madeira –15 Km Compressport will be given one bag for clothing and other personal hygiene items: one for a change of clothes
at the mid-point of the race (Alegria), the other for storing belongings for the finish.
A sticker with the athlete’s identification must be placed on each bag, which will be delivered with the race bib at check-in.
Bags with belongings should be turned in at the designated location at the start line before the race begins. Poles are not allowed in the bag, so any
participant who starts the competition with them must transport them to the finish line. A sticker with the athlete’s identification and destination

The bags will be claimed in Funchal at the finish line by the athletes themselves or by a third party upon presentation of the identification document.
Bags will be available near the finish point up to an hour after the race time limit. After this period, athletes should contact the organisation to collect
their bags. In the event the bag must be sent to the participant, the latter shall bear all related costs.
Only bags provided by the organization may be used. Their contents will not be checked, nor will any claims regarding the contents be accepted.
Valuables should not be left in the bags.
The maximum period to claim bags is 15 days following the race. After this time, the contents will be donated to charity.
1.13– SAFETY AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
In the sections of the course that follow public roads, each participant must respect the Highway Code and shall be solely liable for any infringement
of these rules.
First aid stations will be available at some aid stations, as shown on the elevation chart. These stations will have direct phone lines to the race office.
A medical team will be present during the entire race as a preventative measure.
First aid stations are intended to assist anyone in danger, using the means provided by the organization or under conventions. The official race
medics are authorized to remove the race bib and consequently remove the runner from the race, depending on their assessment of the
participant’s health condition. First aid responders are authorized and prepared to evacuate, by all means at their disposal, any participants believed
to be in danger or whose physical or psychological wellness is in question.

If necessary, and in the rescued person’s best interests, the rescue may be carried out by fire fighters, using the appropriate means. The resulting
cost of these extraordinary means shall be the responsibility of the rescued person.
In submitting to medical or first aid treatment, any and all athletes / participants accept to abide by the Doctor’s or First Aid Responder’s decisions.
1.14– PHYSIOTHERAPISTS – MASSAGES
Physiotherapists, masseurs and other health professionals will be present at the race finish to assist runners. Access to these services will be
restricted to participants (upon presentation of the bib).
1.15– CONTROL POSTS AND AID STATIONS
The control posts placed along the race course are areas of mandatory passage. The location of a few posts may not be communicated by the
organisation.
Except for members of the organisation team, only athletes with a visible race bib will have access to aid stations. The race documents will identify
the locations of the aid stations along the course, as well as what is provided: solids, liquids, or both, to be consumed at the station, with water
available for filling each athlete’s personal container.
A buffet meal will be provided after the race at the finish line or at a location chosen by the organization
1.16 – MAXIMUM RACE TIMES
The athlete has a maximum of:
• 22 hours to complete the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 80 km Compressport.
• 12 hours to complete the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 40 km Compressport.
• 9 hours to complete the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 25 km Compressport.
• 5 hours to complete the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 15 km Compressport.
The time limits (time barriers) as well as aid stations and control posts will be published and delivered with the course map to all the participants at
the time of the check in.
The time barriers are calculated in order to allow participants to arrive at the finish line within the maximum timeframe provided by the
organization (including stops, supplies and any assistance needed). In order for the athlete to continue in the race, he/she must leave the control
posts or aid stations before the deadline set for that location, regardless of the arrival time at them.
Any participant who turns in a race bib cannot continue the competition. If the athlete decides to continue on anyway, he does so on his own account
and at his own risk, in complete autonomy.
An athlete who abandons the race and delivers his/her identification (bib) will not be considered a “Finisher.”
In the event of poor weather conditions and/or safety reasons, the organization reserves the right to cancel and/or stop the race in progress or
change the time barriers, in full cooperation and in connection with the various entities involved in the event.
1.17 - SHOWERS
There will be showers at the finish in a location to be announced later for use by athletes after the race.
1.18 – WITHDRAWAL AND TRANSPORTATION
Except for injury or serious health impairment, no participant may abandon the race outside an aid station or control post. The runner must hand in
the race bib to the station head. The athlete retains the bracelet as it will still be needed to access organisation and event services and facilities.
An athlete who wishes to withdraw from the race must first inform the organisation using the emergency number given and which, for convenience,
is found on the race bib. Transportation to the race finish will be decided by the control post or aid station head, respecting the following conditions:
• Athletes who withdraw but whose health condition does not necessarily require an immediate return, will be transported to the finish line as soon
as possible.
• In the event of bad weather that requires a partial or total stoppage of the race, the organization will guarantee that athletes who were stopped are
transported from control posts or aid stations as soon as possible.
• Withdrawing from the race before a control post or aid station, except for the reasons set forth above, results in the athlete being responsible for
the return and transportation to the finish line.

1.19 – PENALTIES – DESQUALIFICATIONS
Over the course of the race, there will be members of the organization team specifically qualified to check for the mandatory equipment and, in
general, the compliance with the regulations (identification of the participants, respect for the environment and event spirit, assistance and
restricted companions, non-visible race bibs, etc.).
Any runner who does not have in his possession, at the time of the check, all the mandatory equipment will be automatically disqualified, a decision
which cannot be appealed.
A minimum 30-minute time penalty is applied for any and every other infringement of the regulations. The controller shall inform the head of the
post or the secretariat of the race and may request (depending on the seriousness of the act committed and the runner’s behaviour) the
disqualification of the competitor.
The Race Jury may announce the disqualification of a competitor for any and every serious infringement of the regulations and specifically for:
• Using the race bib irregularly.
• Not presenting an identification document, or presenting an identification document that does not match the race bib.
• Not using the bracelet.
• Disrespecting the Highway Code when using public roads and regional and local highways.
• Disrespecting the instructions given by the organisation members, present or not, at the control posts and aid stations.
• Using any means of transportation (during the race).
• Leaving an aid station/control post after the time limit set by the organisation.
• Not helping a competitor in need.
• Receiving personal assistance outside the areas officially designated for aid.
• Receiving a prohibited accompanier during the race.
• A competitor or team member polluting or damaging a space or environment
• Impoliteness, insults or threats directed to any organisation member or volunteers.
• Refusing to be examined by physician of the organisation at any time during the race.
• Doping or refusal to submit to an anti-doping test.

1.20 - COMPLAINTS
Complaints will be accepted up to 30 minutes after the posting of provisional results.
1.21 – ANTI-DOPING TEST
Any athlete may be subject to an anti-doping test before, during or after the race. Refusal to submit to the anti-doping test will automatically result in
disqualification. All positive tests automatically entails the exclusion of the athlete from all events organised under the EcoTrail brand.
1.22 – RACE JURY
The Race Jury is made up of:
- Organiser
- Event Coordinator
- Safety Coordinator
- Medical team head
- Control post heads (stations in question)
The Jury is authorized and mandated to make decisions, within the time limit compatible with race regulations, in all disputes, complaints or
disqualifications that may occur during the event. The decisions of this body are not subject to appeal.
1.23 – THE COURSE
The courses of the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – Compressport will be marked with a tape and other signposts, as described hereunder. Any
signposting that is not in accordance with these graphics is not to be taken into account by the athletes, for it is not the responsibility of the
Organization.
1.24 – CHANGES IN THE COURSE OR TIME LIMITS; RACE CANCELATION
The organization reserves the right to change, at any time, the course, location or locations of the control posts and aid stations, without advance
notice. In the event of adverse weather forecasts (strong depressions, risks of heavy rain, strong wind, orange or red advisories, snow, etc.), the start
will be delayed up to 2 hours, and beyond this time the race will be cancelled.
In the event of poor weather conditions and for safety reasons, the organization reserves the right to cancel or stop the race in question, review or
modify the time barriers at control posts.
The cancellation, postponement or any change in the race does not give the right to any registration reimbursement or damages.
Al decisions will be taken by the Jury which will include the Director/Coordinator of the Race, Organizer, Coordinator of safety coordinator, as well as
any other competent person appointed by the Organization.
1.25 – INSURANCE
The organization will provide personal liability insurance and race insurance, to cover the race. The personal liability insurance will cover all the
athletes during the race as well as all participants in initiatives and spaces managed by the organization.
All participants are covered by personal accident insurance within the amounts provided by the law.
Nevertheless, we recommend that all competitors have their own personal accident insurance.
1.26 – COURSE MAP / RACE BOOK
A detailed description of the course will be provided at an opportune time. At the time of check-in, each athlete will be given a race book that will
include all the practical information, such as for example: outline and elevation of the course, time limits for passing each control post, information
regarding aid stations, first aid stations.
1.27 – STANDINGS AND REWARDS
A Finisher is any participant who crosses all the control locations and the finish line within the time limit designated by the Organization and only
these will be ranked. There are no cash prizes. All athletes who finish the race will have access to the “FINISHER’S KIT.”
The FINISHER’S KIT is identical for everyone within the same race. The FINISHER’S KIT may be different from race to race.

The following categories and classifications are provided for:
• Overall classification for Men and Women;
• Classification by category in Men and Women;
• The first 3 men and first 3 women in the general standings will receive a trophy.
• The first 3 classified in each category will also receive a trophy.
• In the event of a category having fewer than 3 participants, only the first person in each category will be honoured.
A Finisher is any participant who passes through all the control posts and the finish line before the maximum limit set by the organization.
1.28 - ECOLOGICAL CONCERN
Throughout the course, together with the bib/dorsal, each participant will be given a specific bag for the garbage that may be produced during the
course. Everyone is expected to collaborate by making use of that bag so that the race is more eco friendly. Any participant who consciously throws
dirt during the course will be disqualified.
All participants must respect the signposting of the race and undertake not to damage intentionally the trees and vegetation. Failure to comply with
this principle will imply disqualification.
Garbage will be collected at all supply stations. We recommend that the participants make use of it using the selective waste collection.
1.29 – AID
Within the framework of values of solidarity and environmental protection, it is natural that Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - Compressport Organisation
is associated with other entities with the objectives of environmental protection and the minimisation of the ecological impact of the race.
Various measures and concrete initiatives will be announced at an appropriate time.
The selection of protection and environmental rehabilitation measures will be announced, in accordance with the organisation partners in this area
and will be published on the race’s website: www.ecotrailmadeira.com
1.30 – IMAGE RIGHTS
In participating in any event or initiative of the Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira – Compressport Organisation, each athlete authorizes the organisation to
use or reproduce his/her name, image or voice and sports performance within the context of the Trail and in relation to any direct or indirect
exploration of the event. This authorisation is extended to all means known or unknown to date, using any support, worldwide, for an unspecified
period of time. Any project or advertising support produced must have the prior approval of the Organisation.
1.31 – INFORMATION PROTECTION
The organisation Ecotrail Funchal - Madeira - 80 km Compressport, pledges to scrupulously respect that which is stipulated in the Portuguese law
in regard to the gathering and processing of information.
We call the attention of all participants to be aware of their rights: Citizenship Rights – the rights related to the use of informatics are established in
the Constitution of the Republic (Art. 35) and developed in the Law of Data Protection. It is very important to know them and exercise them. These
are the main rights: Right to Information / Right to Access/ Right to correction or elimination / Right of contestation / Other rights
