Fall Conference to Address Depressed Moms
CSC’s Institute for Child and Family Development will hold a full-day conference
November 14, 2008, entitled “How Maternal Depression Affects Babies and Young
Children.” Program presenters are well-known, published experts in their field: Dr. Roseanne
Clark and Dr. Andres Pumariega. The conference will
be held at the Best Western Hotel & Conference
Center. Two Rivers Health & Wellness Foundation

depression is important for mother, baby, and family. Major depression in the postpartum
period is a significant public health concern that poses risk to the quality of the motherinfant relationship during a critical period for the development of attachment. Inadequate
attachment or failure to attach is associated with developmental delay, behavior issues, and
other challenges in infants and young children, which adversely affect learning.
The prevalence, symptoms, and risks associated with postpartum depression and the impact
on maternal functioning, mother-infant and family relationships, and consequences for
child development and subsequent psychopathology will be described and explored in this
conference. Presenters will discuss strategies for early screening and identification of postpartum depression, as well as assessment and treatment approaches for supporting positive
family relationships, emotions, attention, and behavior regulation in young children.

Baum Art Students Beautify CSC
Under the direction of Rosemary Geseck, a teacher
with the Baum Art School, eight high school students
are painting a mural for the reception area in the Levin
Administration Building at the Donley Children’s
Campus to enhance our “family-friendly” environment.
Students include Reed Baum, Shay Baum, Matt
Chernasky, Sandra Kanapathy, Kaitlyn M. May, Abbey
Rosko, Dani Savaki, and Mia Walton.
Susquehanna
Bank Helps Classrooms
A big thank you to Randy Wenhold, Assistant Vice
President and Branch Manager at Susquehanna Bank’s
11th & Hamilton branch, for spearheading a Back to
School book and supply drive on behalf of CSC’s
Allentown Pre-K Counts School, which is moving into
new classrooms down the street from the bank this
September.
CSC Expands Pre-K Counts
Thanks to Gov. Ed Rendell and the PA Legislature,
the free preschool program for low-income families
was expanded for the next school year. CSC was
awarded funds for 20 additional students, bringing
the total to 140 in our program. In September, 120
preschoolers attend CSC’s Pre-K Counts School in
Allentown and 20 in Easton.

New Pre-K Counts school Opens
in Allentown
The building gods were with us this past summer and
CSC was able to secure a lease for the former Verizon
Building at 11th & Linden in Allentown. With enough
space for all six Pre-K Counts classrooms, CSC is
moving its once scattered classrooms under one roof,
making for easier administration. The building is
owned by Mark Smith Realty.
Kudos especially to Jim LeVan,
Business Team Manager, Toshiba,
for conceiving and spearheading
a recycling event to raise money
for CSC. Toshiba Customer
Service Rep. Casey DeCeia was
instrumental in coordinating with
recycler Shawn Erie, Regional
Sales Manager for AERC/
Comcyle. Lehigh Valley Economic
Development Corp. and the
Eastern Pennsylvania Business
Journal assisted efforts by
promoting the event through their
networks. Thanks also to Colby
Kent and Jared Steckel, CMA.
