Great institutions have abiding identities because people actively link the past and the future with profound cultural values that resonate with deep meaning and a vital sense of purpose for the people who comprise the life of the institution in the present. At Francis W. Parker School, we know that the bridge between the past and the future is built on the special, creative blend of tradition and innovation that students, educators and parents cultivate through their relationships with each other and the ideas and values that they encounter each day. The opening of Parker’s new Diane and David B Heller Auditorium during the 2008–09 school year is a beautiful example of the school’s commitment to preserve and nurture a tradition of innovation in the present. The new auditorium is both expansive and intimate, allowing us to be together for Morning Ex, dramatic and musical performances, public speakers and town meetings, all in one space, as a complete community and in the warm embrace of a model home. The auditorium serves as a center not only for so much of Parker’s life but also as an emerging center for the cultural and educational life of Chicago and the broader world. Balancing tradition and innovation is no easy matter. It requires open, thorough conversation that is informed by a democratic appreciation that good ideas can come from all kinds of places in and around our school community. It requires an innovative attitude that I can say is shared by so many throughout the school community, from the Board of Trustees to the administration, from students to alumni, from the staff and teachers to the parents. It is this desire to bring the best thinking possible, in the best interest of educating students in accord with our mission, that takes place daily at Parker. continued 2 As human beings, we seek the comfort of the known as well as the energy of pursuing the novel. Whether it is revising administrative processes or rethinking how we educate students about the ancient Greeks, or integrating newer technologies into the curriculum, or supporting newer understandings about how students learn in a wide variety of ways, or encouraging the success of new student initiatives such as the Fourth Wall student theatre group, the Robotics Club, Model UN and more, Parker is at its best when aspects of our past are experienced in the present in ways that are alive and pulsating with energy, clarity and commitment. This is the Parker way. This is who we are. This is our identity as a strong, enduring and innovative school, and I am most grateful to all in our school community who, in so many ways, support the life and mission of Francis W. Parker School. Daniel B. Frank ’74, Ph.D. Principal Parker parent 3 CONTENTS As president of the Board of Trustees, I am proud to report that the 2008–09 academic year was fiscally sound for Francis W. Parker School. We continue to operate with a balanced budget of more than $24 million, maintain a remarkable physical facility and carefully plan for the future of “our model home.” We are very grateful to our incomparable faculty and administration, unflagging volunteers, devoted parents and enthusiastic alumni who make this school possible. This was also a challenging year for Parker. At the outset of the economic crisis in the fall, the administration and the board developed contingency plans to implement both for the rest of the year and for the next several years. We did so with an eye on maintaining educational programming excellence while controlling expenses and providing additional financial aid funding for current families, should that be necessary as the full impact of the crisis unfolded. As we planned for the most difficult economic times that most of us had ever experienced, we also had much to celebrate. This year marked another milestone in our capital campaign. We closed the fiscal year having raised more than $68 million and having collected more than $36 million. Our annual fundraising, which we feared would suffer as it has for many Chicago institutions, virtually reached our budgeted goals. This was a tribute to the commitment of many in our community. Our thanks go to this year’s Cooke & the Colonel Scholarship Dinners co-chairs, Jeanette Sublett and Joanne Nemerovski, as well as the chairs of the Parent Annual Giving Program: Al Bennett, Ellen Block, Kelly Cassidy and Jonathan Marks ’82. This year we officially concluded 14 years of rebuilding our entire campus. The culmination of this effort took place in the spring, when we celebrated the opening of our magnificent new Diane and David B Heller Auditorium. While some would assert that “bricks and mortar” do not a great institution make, our renovated campus, with all its new classrooms, science labs and music classrooms, visual art and drama areas designed to meet the needs of these disciplines, certainly enhances the wonderful interactions between our students and faculty. The auditorium is a facility that not only allows everyone who presents a Morning Ex to be seen and heard, but, for the first time in decades, brings the entire Parker community together to enjoy these events in one place. continued 4 There is still more work to be done to ensure the future of our beloved school. You can read the names of those who have contributed through June 30, 2009 beginning on page 36. The generosity and commitment of our families never ceases to amaze me! We look forward to continued communication about the bold vision for the school’s future and encouraging the participation of every member of our community to make certain that vision becomes a reality. Finally, this year marked my last as president of the board, a position it has been my privilege to hold for the past five years. Parker is extremely fortunate to have on its board a talented, committed and selfless group of individuals who want to do what is best not only for current students but for future generations of Parker students. This past year, we carefully examined the best way to do that in the context of the economic climate. The board, along with Principal Dan Frank, will continue to carefully monitor the economic situation and have contingency plans to deal with further dislocations should they occur. We are also fortunate that Jonathan Marks ’82, a Parker alumnus and current parent (with his wife Stephanie, of three Lower School students), will be our new board president. Those of us who have served for the past decade mark this as a transition of leadership to the next generation of board members and are thrilled that we have such a “deep bench” of younger members to assume the board’s myriad challenges. Jonathan has not only a deep understanding of Parker’s mission and the complexities of the institution, but also a passion for Parker that will serve the school well. I have been at Parker as a parent for more than 20 years (consecutively) and an at-large trustee for almost a decade. Our family treasures our Parker experiences, and, while we all miss the day-to-day connection with the school community, we will never feel disconnected from it. I hope that all those families who are part of the Parker community will continue to support the school, as our family will, as it completes the Founding Our Second Century Campaign and secures its future in this seemingly insecure world. Once again, our entire school community can gather under one roof for Morning Ex, classroom presentations, guest speakers, student performances and much more. The new auditorium has been named after Diane and David B Heller to honor their generosity and commitment to Francis W. Parker School and the Founding Our Second Century Campaign. The Heller family has been integral to the school for more than seven decades, and they have been instrumental in helping secure Parker’s future as well as inspiring others to give. From its opening in early March through Commencement in June, the auditorium welcomed several special guests. Grand Opening Celebration: March 2, 2009 This event was a wonderful opportunity for Parker families and friends to gather and celebrate our spectacular new auditorium as the school hosted a dedication to thank the Heller family for their generosity in making our new auditorium possible. The evening included student performances, tours of the new space and a reception. To view photos of the Grand Opening Celebration, click here. Dr. Paul Sereno Lecture: March 23, 2009 Parker’s 2008–09 Robert A. Pritzker Visiting Scientist•Inventor•Engineer in Residence was worldrenowned paleontologist Dr. Paul Sereno. In addition to his interactions with students, Dr. Sereno gave a public presentation about his most recent discovery in the Sahara. For information on the program and Dr. Sereno, click here. continued 9 Delfos Danza Contemporánea: March 31, 2009 Recognized as one of Latin America’s most important contemporary dance companies, Delfos Danza Contemporánea from Mexico made its Chicago debut in April at The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago. While in Chicago, the company participated in several lecture/demonstrations in Parker classrooms and gave two special performances in the new auditorium: one for Parker students and one for nearly 400 Chicago Public School students. For more information about Delfos Danza Contemporánea, click here. Francine C. Rosenberg Lecture Series: April 20, 2009 The stage of the new auditorium has been named the Francine C. Rosenberg Stage to honor the memory of one of Parker’s most dedicated and effective volunteers. As an exceptionally competent and purposeful leader for Parker, Francine had a far-reaching impact on the school and on those who had the privilege of knowing her. For the past 11 years, Parker has welcomed a guest to talk to the community under the auspices of the Francine C. Rosenberg Lecture Series. This year’s speaker was Sir Ken Robinson, a 2008 Peabody Award winner, who spoke on the topic, “The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything.” For more information about Robinson, click here. In addition to these momentous events inside the school walls, Parker as an institution was represented at two important national conferences: ■ Principal Daniel B. Frank, Learning Resource Department Chair Allison Kimball, Upper School Learning Resource teacher Karen Swidler and Intermediate and Middle School Head Tom Rosenbluth spoke at Yale’s Center for Dyslexia and Creativity Conference. The conference focused on ways of supporting students with dyslexia in Independent schools as well as current research and implications. ■ A number of Parker faculty members participated in the annual National Association of Independent Schools conference, entitled Schools of the Future: Sailing the Winds of Change. Parker's Upper School student jazz band Grooveyard performed at the event. One main priority for the year was to reflect on and refine our curriculum, particularly in the area of literacy. Lower and Intermediate School Curriculum Coordinator Barbara Hunt facilitated many conversations with faculty throughout the year. As a result, we have been able to gain further consistency within and across grade levels and ensure that our curriculum reflects current research and best practices. Another goal was to explore expanding our Spanish instruction throughout the Lower and Intermediate Schools. We are thrilled to expand Spanish instruction into 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in the 2009–10 academic year. Our new Spanish teacher, Dan Baltierra, and Barbara Hunt helped us research best practices and outline a plan that will bring this important program into these three grades. Baltierra used the Spanish tradition of Las Posadas in the SK–2nd grade classrooms; to read more about this project, click here. Students and teachers took full advantage of our presidential election last fall. Every grade level studied the election process and watched the historic inauguration as a community. Many classes used this event to help children further understand the democratic process. One SK class learned to vote to select their new class pet. A 1st grade election took place to choose their favorite literary character (click here to read about it). The class divided into three groups and each came up with a “party” name and chose a candidate from a different book. The students discussed the characteristics of their candidates; made posters, information sheets and flags; and even held lively debates. To culminate the project, they held a mock election with their 1st and 2nd grade peers, their 5th grade buddies and teachers from throughout the school. As Parker strives to “cultivate in its students qualities of character and citizenship,” we work to nurture a sense of environmental stewardship. The Science and Art Departments collaborated on several continued 11 endeavors this year, including a Morning Ex to share the work with “fast plants” that many grade levels studied across the school. We had a full week of Earth Day events, including an “off the grid” classroom in the courtyard. At our annual JK and SK Spring Fling, teachers led an activity that had children decorating reusable lunch bags to bring to school next year. Every year, we strive to enhance and refine our Central Topic curriculum, holding on to rich traditions and making changes or additions to keep our studies relevant. One 2nd grade class became interested in learning more about cranes through their study of Japan. Second grade teacher Kathy Wild led her class in an origami project to help bring good luck to this endangered species. These 2nd graders taught students and adults of all ages to fold the cranes and donated their large collection to the International Crane Foundation in Wisconsin. For a few more examples of innovative Lower School activities, click on the links below. Accomplished Professional Inspires SK Artists One of the many unique aspects of a Parker education is the flexibility to take advantage of unanticipated opportunities for new learning experiences. SK teacher Johanna Davis had one such opportunity this spring, when Charles (’78) and Julie Ruder San Fratello (’80), parents of her student Nathalie, suggested that their friend, professional artist David Lee Csicsko, visit her class. For more about Csicsko's visit with the SK, click here. Third Grade Pioneer Audio Projects In their study of pioneers, 3rd grade students learned to expand their thinking to include individuals throughout history noted for being the first to do something important or special, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Ben Franklin and Helen Keller, to name a few. For more about this classroom project, click here. 12 By Tom Rosenbluth ’72, Head T CONTENTS his was an interesting year in the Intermediate and Middle Schools. In some ways, it was a year of refinement and experimentation: we adapted some traditions, such as the 5th grade Medieval Fair, to best fit the needs of the students and reinvigorate the event. Altering traditions is always tricky business, even at a progressive school such as Parker, because the pressure exerted by the expectations of each group of students and parents, combined with the high standards from past years, creates a weight that can be overwhelming. Nonetheless the faculty did make some changes, and the results were encouraging and enlivening. The 5th grade has studied the Middle Ages for many years and often performs a play or series of skits focusing on a particular theme, such as a cheerful examination of life during the plague years. These performances are frequently very interesting but present a range of challenges, from writing a script with 54 parts to running rehearsals that equally engage all involved. This year the team invited the students to research any aspect of the Middle Ages that interested them. We had experts on blood-letting, siege engines, stained glass, royal intrigue, mapmaking and dance. The students and art teachers then transformed their rooms into medieval towns or castles. The students practiced staying in character and each actually took on the persona of an imagined tradesman, dancer or zealous blacksmith. The visiting audiences were transported to the world of the Middle Ages by 54 simultaneous portrayals of medieval people going about their lives. It was fun and engaging for the audience and for the students, who discovered a way to dramatically share their knowledge and validate, equally, the work and voice of every student. The refinements were a huge success. For photos of the 5th grade medieval dubbing ceremony, click here. Similarly, the Middle School faculty wanted to make some changes to our Community Service Program. For many years, Middle School students have spent eight half days each year volunteering at 20 different sites, such as Christopher House, Chicago Children’s Museum, Carole Roberts House, Ronald McDonald House, Kidney Dialysis Centers and other locations. We remain committed to the importance of this activity and believe it lies close to the heart of the school’s mission. But we also wanted to inject new life into the program. Some wanted to consolidate our efforts into fewer days to make a big difference continued 13 on one project; others wanted a whole grade to work together or to be able to work with different combinations of students. We decided to devote two community service mornings at the end of the year to raising money and awareness about the lack of access to fresh water facing many people. Partnering with an organization called H20-School to School, we raised more than $2,000 to help provide a bathroom and drinking water for the Mahweh School in Uganda. Our students obtained sponsors as they rotated through a series of activities, such as a water-carrying obstacle course or painting wall panels with a water theme. Click here for photos. The theme of water access emerged in the curriculum of several classes as well. More than anything, we learned, in a positive and optimistic way, that we can actually make a concrete difference in the world and that some problems that seem intractable can be solved by small groups of people acting purposefully to make the world a better place. I find the vision and courage of teachers to re-imagine aspects of their curriculum to be inspiring, creative and continually invigorating. Visiting Storyteller Inspires 5th Grade Writers Writing plays a central role in Parker’s 5th grade curriculum. Storyteller, author and artist Susan O’Halloran visited 5th grade classrooms to share her expertise and inspire Parker’s emerging writers. For more about O'Halloran's visit, click here. Sixth Grade Story Theater a Hit! Another flourishing Parker tradition since 1997, which celebrates Asian history, culture and literature, is the 6th grade presentation of Story Theater, held May 28 in the Auditorium. For more about the presentation, click here. Class of 2014 presents An Encyclopedia of an Extraordinary Seventh Grade Seventh grade English teacher Paige Sweet led her young writers on a transformative journey this academic year. Beginning the year with an introduction to Parker parent Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s memoir Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, students immediately connected with her clever and witty chronicling of what may seem—to the naked eye—to be an existence of the mundane. For more about the Encyclopedia project, click here. continued 14 Wordspeak in the 8th Grade David Fuder’s 8th grade English classes recently finished a creative project that combined students’ artistry and poetry skills. Students selected words that were filled with memory, meaning or mystery and brought these words to life in visually sparkling ways. For more about this class project, click here. Middle School Science Olympiad Team Closes Their Most Successful Season Yet! Science Olympiad, a nationwide competition that invites middle and high school students to tackle science topics and challenges outside their normal curriculum, is carving out a space for itself in Parker’s Middle School. For more about the team's accomplishments, click here. Eighth Grade Math and Science Curriculum Engineering Challenges are part of the new curricular unit in 8th grade science and math that places an emphasis on engineering. Presidential Election Promotes Citizenship at all Grade Levels The election year offered our skilled faculty a perfect opportunity to connect class work to current events in guiding students to be thoughtful and active participants in a democratic society. Click on the links below to read about ways our students engaged in this historic event. Democratic Participation for All Ages Learning by Doing in an Historic Election Year First Graders Explore the November Election Process A Timely New Course for an Election Year: Participatory Democracy 15 By Joe Ruggiero, Head O CONTENTS ur main, overarching goal in the Upper School in 2008–09 was to spend more time as a faculty actively discussing and exploring ways in which interdisciplinary work can continue to strengthen and enrich the educational experience of our students. Because teachers in the Upper School are affiliated by academic discipline and not by grade level, we have to work especially hard to make sure that we are adequately and consistently exploring how to collaborate on improving the way students experience the curricula on a holistic and developmental level. To this end, several of our faculty meetings this year were spent in grade-level groups with teachers sharing everything from course content to learning goals and objectives to assessment and evaluation methods—all to provide faculty who taught at each grade level with a better understanding of potential overlaps to capitalize on, connections to develop further and opportunities to live up to our mission of developing “citizens who, with their teachers, connect the experience of the classroom with life throughout the school, our broader society and the wider world.” The cross-disciplinary work allows the student to see and experience real interconnectedness and experience more meaningful reflection, learning and insight. This work has resulted in many examples of innovative and exciting instruction. In 9th grade, the Integrated Science class has the central theme of sustainability and environmental responsibility; biology, chemistry and physics instruction are all developed in association with hands-on, lab-based learning and experimentation to get students to think more critically about the world around them and their place in it. When these teachers began more structured conversations with our 9th grade history teachers about their curriculum— including the topic of “Human Needs, Utilitarianism and the Natural Environment” in the Themes in World History course—there was a sense of excitement and opportunity about how their curricula could mutually support, expand and enrich each other. As a culminating joint experience, the teachers organized a trip to a local waste facility to learn about and discuss the principles of waste management from an ecological as well as an ethical perspective. We are discussing other cooperative ventures for future years. continued 16 Another example of teachers working together across disciplines was spurred on by the excitement over the Presidential election this past fall. Teachers from the English, History and Math Departments, in conjunction with our Community Action Office, created opportunities for students to learn and talk about the election from a variety of perspectives (historical/sociopolitical, statistical, journalistic) and participate in such activities as creating an electoral politics museum, volunteering at campaign offices or publishing their own survey data. Students even got involved across divisions through an active collaboration between seniors in our Participatory Democracy class and Bev Greenberg’s 1st graders, who were just learning about the relationship between voting and democracy. To read more about this venture, click here. We greatly look forward to continued work and further progress in collaborative teaching. As a progressive institution, we are fully invested in deepening student knowledge by systematically building on learning in multiple contexts and strengthening our instructional program coherence. For more examples of our efforts this past year, click on the links below. Parker Students Shine at Robotics Regional Competitions—On to the Nationals! The All-City Chicago Knights Robotics Team, including five Parker Upper School students, had a busy start in 2009, reaching out to the community and competing regionally to earn accolades and a spot at the World Championship competition in Atlanta in April. For more about the team's accomplishments, click here. A Visit to the Modern Muslim World What’s the best way of helping two cultures better understand each other? By bringing them together, of course. And this is just what history teacher Kevin Conlon decided to do, bringing his Modern Muslim World students face-to-face with students from the Islamic Foundation School in Villa Park. For more about this exchange, click here. Civil War Debates in the Upper School Wanting his U.S. History students to do more than just read about the Civil War and the injustices of slavery, Andrew Bigelow initiated a series of debates, assigning students to a specific side of four different groups: the Secessionist branch of the South, the Nationalist branch of the South, the Abolitionist branch of the North and the Free-Soilers branch of the North. For more about this classroom activity, click here. 17 CONTENTS As part of its mission to cultivate responsible citizens who make significant contributions to their communities, Parker offers students opportunities for service at all grade levels. Lower School/Intermediate School Teachers, students and parents in Parker’s Junior Kindergarten classroom worked with their 2nd grade counterparts to conduct a winter clothing drive. The donations of previously used coats, boots, hats and mittens brought in from students’ homes combined with unclaimed items from Parker’s Lost and Found were brought to donation sites just in time for the December holiday season. Parker’s 3rd grade Animal Ranger program attracted large numbers of students interested in playing a primary role in caring for animals at school. Rangers came to school before classes to help feed and care for animals used in Lower and Intermediate School science classes and helped younger students who came to the morning open science lab learn about the class pets and how to properly handle them. Fourth grade students played a hands-on role in ensuring their younger peers arrived at their classrooms safely each day through Parker’s long-standing K-walker program. Each day, a group of 4th graders reports to drop-off and pick-up locations to safely escort Lower School students from their cars to the classrooms and back at the end of the day. Middle School Students in 6th–8th grades learned about themselves and others by working in different neighborhoods and institutions. Choosing one of 15 site options, students had the opportunity to organize activities, provide assistance and implement solutions to real-life problems. As a result, students strengthened their self-esteem, solidified their capacity to feel empathy for others and deepened their understanding of what it means to be responsible citizens in a democratic society. Students working at Casa Central Adult Wellness Center and Child Development Program used their Spanish language skills with both elderly and young Chicagoans. They danced, engaged in arts and crafts activities and interviewed seniors to get to know them better. In Casa Central’s Head Start program, students assisted teachers, read to younger children and interacted with them during play time. Later, Parker students captured their experience in words and pictures and made a beautiful memory book as a gift for Casa Central. continued 18 To increase students’ awareness and understanding of homelessness in general, and in Chicago in particular, one student group took to the streets. They gathered food to donate to shelters, served meals at shelters and engaged with those who currently struggle or have struggled with homelessness. Especially meaningful to students was making sack lunches at the school and distributing them directly to those in need on Chicago’s streets. Through these interactions, students became more aware of stereotypes and misinformation that exists, allowing them to think more critically about the issue of homelessness. Parker students served as facilitators between preschoolers from the Jewish Reconstructionist Day School and members of the Council for the Jewish Elderly Adult Day Services Center. This intergenerational program aims to help participants understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses by working in triads on cooperative projects. To better understand and appreciate the daily challenges confronting the elderly people they came to know during the year, students attempted to simulate their challenges on a simple trip to the store: cataracts were reproduced by wearing lab goggles smeared with Vaseline, students wore earplugs to decrease hearing ability, and they donned mittens to replicate the loss of dexterity associated with arthritis. This firsthand experience with reduced abilities they once took for granted helped students better grasp the difficulties associated with getting older. Upper School Students at all grade levels got involved in campaigns and elections: 18 Parker students served as Election Judges—one on the South Side handed then-Presidential candidate Barack Obama his ballot—and many more campaigned for candidates for both the Presidential and the Congressional elections. The 9th grade students chose from a range of groups, including Homecoming for Veterans, Conversation Partners with Refugee Students, Theatre of Civil Rights, Nature Conservation and the Healthy Earth and Healthy Selves partnership with 1st graders at Stockton Elementary. Students developed friendships with people of diverse cultures, ages and backgrounds and learned about their city, one another and themselves. Among the Social Arts Partnerships that 10th graders participated in: ■ Siddhartha Project with Orr Academy—creating shadow puppets and a gamelan orchestra, students adapted and performed the story of Siddhartha at Intuit Museum for the public and Parker P.M. students. ■ Urban Dance Projex with Uplift Community Academy—facilitated by the hip hop group Kuumba Lynx, Parker and Uplift students learned hip hop dance and poetry as a means of exploring justice and peace in the world and in the self. continued 19 ■ Theatre of Social Justice with Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy—facilitated by theatre artist Jasmin Cardenas, Parker and Lozano students learned methods of Theatre of the Oppressed. ■ Mikva Challenge Issues to Action program—students developed action projects around the issue of school closings in Chicago. The 11th grade Community Connections offered students a variety of themes and issues to act upon, including: ■ Creating alliances between straight and gay students ■ Environmental justice in Chicago ■ Homelessness ■ Parents Allied with Children and Teachers for Tomorrow (PACTT) ■ Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) ■ Women in the world For more about Community Connections, click here. Independent Social Action Projects in 12th grade allowed students to develop projects around their interests and concerns: ■ Leadership and Community Class—students actively participated in choosing the winner of this year’s Susan F. Berkowitz Award for Outstanding Service to Children; worked with 10th graders on their Issues to Action project, which won an award for Excellence in Research at the Mikva Civics Fair; and participated in the Illinois Council of Students, drafting legislation advocating funding equality for all Illinois schools For more about the Berkowitz Award, click here. ■ Mikva Youth Council—the group developed participatory action research projects focused on adolescent health in Chicago. ■ Chicago Youth Initiating Change—working with students from other Chicago schools, Karen Cuenca ’09 helped to organize the third annual Chicago Student Social Justice Expo, addressing issues such as violence, environmental injustice, school closings and more. 20 CONTENTS P arker’s athletics program is designed to provide all students in grades 6–12 with the opportunity to participate on an interscholastic team. The program emphasizes the positive development of student athletes and aims to help them maximize their athletic potential and understand the benefits of teamwork while establishing lifelong habits of fitness. Parker athletes learn self-confidence, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship, while demonstrating empathy and support for their teammates as they give their all in every practice and competition. Participation remained strong, with more than half of students in grades 6–12 participating on one of the school’s baseball, soccer, softball, tennis or track teams. Out of the Box: Parker Students Excel in Athletic Pursuits Parker encourages its students to explore their interests and passions as they develop as individuals and citizens. When these interests fall outside the scope of offerings available at the school, Parker students often take the initiative to think “out of the box” and find an outlet for their personal success and satisfaction. In doing so, they regularly achieve high levels of recognition and excellence. For more about students’ athletic accomplishments outside of Parker, click here. The Parents’ Association, to which all Parker parents automatically belong, serves as a link between parents and the Board of Trustees, faculty and the administration. The Parents’ Association also promotes and supports parent volunteer activities, educational programs and the financial well-being of the school. The Parents’ Association consists of the Parents’ Committee, which serves as the connection between the school and home, and the Parent Network, which facilitates communication between parents and supports them as they encounter child development challenges. As we complete our term as Co-Chairs of the Parents’ Association, we look back on the accomplishments of the past three years. The Parents’ Association has developed an increasingly important link to the school’s administration. Regular meetings with the Principal and Assistant Principal have provided us with a consistent opportunity to represent and voice parents’ interests and concerns. We have actively participated in the ISACS evaluation process; worked with administrators, staff and neighbors of the school to manage increased traffic and parking congestion in the area surrounding the school; provided input on the hiring and orientation of the new Lower School Head; supported student recruitment efforts in cooperation with the Admission Office; and worked with administrators, faculty and staff to successfully adopt a school-wide Wellness Policy. The Parents’ Association has emphasized open communication and dialogue between parents and the school. The Association’s annual State of the School meetings have highlighted new programming in the classrooms and kept parents up to date on developments throughout the school. During each of the past three years, we have hosted an annual meeting to review and discuss the school’s budgeting process. These meetings have enabled parents to review the school’s budget and provided an important opportunity for parents to discuss the budget’s implications with members of the administration, Board of Trustees and Business Office. Our monthly meetings, which are open to all parents, have featured presentations by administrators, faculty, students, parents and outside speakers on a broad range of topics, including the continued 23 work of the Diversity Support Council, school construction, new health initiatives by the school’s Counseling and Community Health Department, a foreign exchange student’s experience at Parker and the Faculty Workshop Day devoted to differences in learning style. This past year, the Parents’ Association participated in discussions with administrators and the board about ways to maintain the school’s mission while remaining fiscally responsible during the national economic downturn. We are proud to report that the Parents’ Association drafted policy and approved the use of its accumulated surplus funds to support an emergency fund for families requiring economic assistance as a result of current conditions. One of our greatest pleasures as Co-Chairs of the Parents’ Association has been working with the incredible parents at Parker. We want to thank the countless parents, grandparents and friends who have given their time, energy and expertise to Parker. Your assistance in the classroom and throughout the school has broadened our children’s experiences and provided invaluable support to the faculty, staff and administration. We are grateful for the opportunity to have served Parker as leaders of the Parents’ Association. It has been an honor to work with the administration, faculty, staff and parents who have continually dedicated themselves to enhancing our school community. We leave the Parents’ Association in good hands as we welcome incoming leaders Diane Goodman and Keith Struve (pictured left). As you know, it has been my privilege this past year to serve in the role of Student Body President, a task I have approached with the blend of gravity and enthusiasm that is, of course, necessary to that office. Yet there was a time, not so long ago, when I was merely a young upstart of a board rep, nervously rapping my sweaty fingers against the armrest of my corner seat in the Harris Center, my eyes darting around the room as faces, familiar and unfamiliar, took their places for the first meeting of the 2006–2007 year. I look back fondly on my days of attending Parker board meetings; I’ve never really gotten over the initial excitement I felt at finally seeing how a school such as this one actually conducts its business—something that I find to be one of the most fascinating aspects of private education. While that might not be an opinion shared by every member of this community, and indeed I’ve had more than a few heated discussions with Mark Aymar on the subject, the fact remains that without the contributions of time and effort made by each and every one of you, the school simply could not function as it does. It has been a genuine honor to get to know so many of you, and your sons and daughters, personally, particularly both Jerry and Kay, for whom I wish only the best, as they, like me, move on to a new phase in their relationship with Parker, and I cannot imagine what my time at this school would have been like if I had not done so. The 2008–2009 school year was, for me at least, a period of transition—and, if I may say so, a particularly successful transition at that. Like many of you, the students agonized over and ultimately celebrated the eventual completion of the construction project that had colored some facet of each of their Parker experiences for the last 14 years. Following paths forged initially by the dynamic work of our immediate predecessors, my fellow students and I strove to develop creative solutions to the myriad unwieldy inconveniences to our standard methods of operating that were the inevitable result of the unpredictable and unavoidable march of progress. No longer able to take the availability of facilities, services or acoustical equipment for granted, the student body remained ever patient and resourceful, with the result that the continued 26 institution of Student Government, and indeed, all aspects of the student experience, remained not only intact, but emerged from this period of turmoil with more vibrancy, and indeed more relevance, then ever before. I am happy to say that the fledgling reforms of my diminutive predecessor (or is that predecessors?) have not been in vain, and I am confident that the day is not far off when even as venerable an institution as Student Government will be able to hold its head aloft proudly, knowing that it is as up-todate as any aspect of our newly constructed facilities. That we are indeed on the cusp of a new period of success for this institution I have no doubt, for as Following is a list of colleges and universities that members of Parker’s class of 2009 are attending: I led the assembly into the newly opened Diane and David B Heller Auditorium for the first time to hold our weekly plenary meeting, I was presented with a sight that will no doubt continue to warm my heart during the many long New England winters that lie ahead for me. For, though the business of the meeting was routine, and perhaps even tedious, the students still remained polite and respectful. There were no cat- Albion College calls from the back rows as there once were, no pennies flying at the heads of innocent 8th graders, only Boston University a sincere interest in each of the commenting individuals’ concerns. Whether through the implementation Brown University Colorado College Columbia University Davidson College Duke University of new practices or simply through the renewed enthusiasm of the students, this organization has entered into a new phase of its existence, one that I am sure will continue to serve the student body well for a good many years to come. One particular pleasure that has resulted from such newfound energy was an opportunity to enter an Emory University online Skype discussion with students of the Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy, an institution with which The George Washington University those of you involved in the Mikva Challenge organization may already be familiar, that caters to the needs Hampshire College of students who have failed to find success in a number of the city’s public high schools. Having already Harvard University established a system of peer disciplinary review modeled on the Parker example, these students Hobart and William Smith Colleges approached my cabinet and the students in Shanti Elliot’s Leadership and Community class asking for Illinois Wesleyan University advice on how best to cultivate and reform a Student Government of their own in the same vein. Our model Indiana University at Bloomington home, it seems, now serves as a model for others as well, and I hope that this will be but the first episode Kenyon College in a long and fruitful relationship with this school, and many other institutions like it, throughout the city. Knox College Loyola University New Orleans Middlebury College continued Likewise, we have taken particular pains this past year to address the ever-evolving composition of the Upper School student body. As I believe Dr. Frank has already mentioned to you on previous occasions, continued 27 Monmouth College last November’s controversial Presidential elections served as a springboard from which to launch a Mount Holyoke College series of small group discussions examining the true level of tolerance of political and, in turn, ideological New York University diversity in the high school curriculum and to what extent our intellectual community was truly an example Northern Illinois University of the “Marketplace of Ideas,” envisioned by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. The results Northwestern University Pitzer College Princeton University Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of these discussions were eye-opening, and at times, both sobering and reassuring. While the process was not without its moments of tension or unpleasant truth, I believe sincerely that to have deliberately skirted the issue for the sake of apparent convenience would have been to do a profound disservice to Skidmore College the citizens of this embryonic democracy. What each of us has learned about each other and ourselves Smith College through engaging in this process strikes me as particularly invaluable, and I believe we have become Tufts University stronger as a population through doing so. This has been accomplished by the dedication of a large number of alumni, the pro- fessional support of the school’s Development and Alumni Office and financial support from the school. Following is a recap of events and initiatives that the Alumni Association has generated and is responsible for running, with the excellent support of our Development and Alumni Office. For photos of these events, click on the links below. FALL 2008 ■ Homecoming/Reunion Weekend “Welcome Home” Cocktail Reception: Entering its fourth year, this event has succeeded in attracting a significant number of alumni to the school all at once, more than 200 each year. Previously, alumni might visit from out of town and never visit Parker, but this event has welcomed them back and reminded them of their love for the school. Thanks to our event chair in each year, Kim Kamin ’89, and, this year, Rachel Bradley ’89. ■ San Francisco and Los Angeles Regional Alumni & Friends Gatherings: These events offer our West Coast alumni a chance to get together and reminisce about their Parker experiences. Typically 50– 75 alumni have attended. Thanks to San Francisco event chair Kim Kerbis ’81, Los Angeles host Rita Stern ’73 and Los Angeles event chair Justine Amodeo ’79. ■ Post-Thanksgiving Gathering: This past year, event chair Jon Landan ’95 came up with the idea of combining the Parker and Latin Thanksgiving events. The idea exceeded our wildest expectations with approximately 500 attending, half from Parker. This event is primarily for our younger alumni, and we hope it will continue to take place annually. continued 29 WINTER 2009 ■ Financial Symposium: John Ettleson ’76, who has chaired this event each year, and William Blair & Company hosted our second annual symposium "America's Changed Financial Landscape.” Although the event has twice fallen on the coldest day of the winter, we have had about 75–100 in attendance each year. This symposium has proved an excellent networking tool for our alumni in the financial community. We hope in future years to have a little less exciting news to discuss. ■ Real Estate Symposium: New this year, "Real Estate Challenges and Opportunities," the brainchild of David Kaplan ’97, was a great success with more than 80 alumni in attendance. We are very grateful to David and his family for their leadership. SPRING 2009 ■ New York Regional Alumni & Friends Gathering: Welcoming about 70–90 alumni in each of the past five years, this event owes much to the generosity of the Goodman family, which has allowed us to enjoy Event Host John Ettelson ’76 (L) with classmate Ken Dawson ’76 at the Financial Symposium. remarkable venues at Rockefeller Center. Thanks also to event chair Stephanie Lieber ’94. ■ Chicago Alumni & Friends Gathering: Four years ago, we realized that our base of Chicago alumni craved the chance to reunite with their fellow alumni as much as others around the country. Like our Welcome Home Cocktail Reception in the fall, this event has attracted 200–250 alumni each year. Thanks to our event chair for each of the years, Jennifer Oppenheimer ’91. YEAR-ROUND COMMITTEES During the past two years, we have launched two committees to intensify our fundraising efforts: ■ Reunion Gifts Committee: This committee’s mission is to make Parker reunions more like successful college reunions that serve as fundraising platforms for their schools. We started by trying to get 100 percent participation from classes; this year we will be combining that goal with specific fundraising goals, such as challenging the class celebrating its 20th reunion to raise $20,000. We know the love is out there and we feel very strongly that reunions are an appropriate place to tap into that affection. (L–R) Zanna Goldblatt Nikitas ’88, Jill Carlson Buckley ’88 and Laura Maloney ’89 at the Real Estate Symposium. Thanks to chairs Elizabeth McCarthy Samuels ’86 and Jill Carlson Buckley ’88. continued 30 ■ Alumni Campaign Gifts Committee: The mission of our newest committee is to target leadership gifts from alumni for the current capital campaign, Founding Our Second Century, as well as endowment and scholarship support. Thanks to chairs Harry Rosenberg ’78 and Laura Maloney ’89. We would never have been able to accomplish all this without the excellent support of Assistant Director of Development–Alumni Relations Sarah Wagoner and Director of Development Renée Ruffing, as well as Principal Dan Frank ’74, who showed his commitment by attending every event. The success of these events is also due in large measure to our event co-chairs (see list on page 32). In addition, every event has scores of co-hosts, and though there are too many to mention, their involvement has been essential. As I look back on this past year, I also thank the Alumni Association Executive Committee and Board of Representatives, who have shown valuable dedication and worked hard to help us reach our goals (see (L–R) Amy Berliner Carson ’98, Stephanie Lieber ’94 and Marisa Rice ’98 at the New York Regional Alumni & Friends Gathering. list on page 32). We have many other dreams about how to make the alumni community stronger. The only limitation to making these dreams become a reality is your active support and involvement. We all have families, jobs and other commitments that demand our time. Each of us has only so much time we can give to the school we love. Please come join us and help keep Parker alive for the next 100 years. My daughter is now in 7th grade, my son is in 5th grade, and my condition has only gotten worse. Unlike my experiences in 7th and 5th grades, my children could not wait to get back to school; they absolutely love Parker. Love is intrinsic to Colonel Parker’s concept of progressive education. He encouraged teachers to bring out “the light of pleasure” in each student’s eyes. I see this light every year on those special Parker days, whether it’s selling popcorn in JK for County Fair, spending the day in the 2nd grade Japanese tea room, Woodland People Day in 3rd grade, 4th grade Egyptian Museum, 5th grade Dubbing Ceremony or my own 6th grader reciting a poem at Morning Ex. I also see the light every day in how they learn at Parker. The way they learn math and reading and social studies and science is so different than how I learned. They are engaged and inspired by reading primary sources and doing their own investigations. They critically think instead of memorize. They acquire knowledge that is contextualized and connected rather than isolated and arbitrary. One day this past summer, my son asked me for help on a long division problem from his summer math packet, and I showed him the formula that I robotically learned when I was in school. He asked me why I did it that way—what was the reasoning behind my strategy. I had no answer. I was dumbfounded—of course, the Parker student always asks why. I give to Parker because I wish I had the kind of education that encouraged me to ask why—that inspired and engaged me in what I was learning. I give to Parker because I am grateful my kids are getting this education and because I want to support others so that they can be inspired and engaged as well. I give to Parker because, as an education professor as well as a parent, I know that this kind of engaging education that fosters a love of learning is what all children need to thrive. 33 CONTENTS ONLINE Visit fwparker.org/donate to make a gift or pledge online. Exploring the Mind-Body Connection Little Moments Matter 41 DONOR LISTS T CONTENTS he Founding Our Second Century Campaign is the most ambitious capital campaign in the history of Francis W. Parker School. The Campaign seeks to raise $89 million, with the major funding objectives of endowment growth and facility improvements. Thanks to the generosity of Parker alumni, parents, grandparents and friends, Parker has raised more than 75 percent of this goal to date. During the past year, the school celebrated the completion of all campus improvements, most significantly the Diane and David B Heller Auditorium. Among our other renovations: ■ Suzanne Crown Goodman Science Wing ■ First floor north wing—Lower School shop, Middle and Upper School art and scene shop, new dance studio, ceramics room, new small café meeting and performance space and new administrative offices ■ Second floor north wing—new window seating and energy-efficient windows in the Kupcinet Gallery, new instrumental/recording studio ■ Third floor north wing—new window seating and energy-efficient windows in the Middle and Upper School Commons, new performing arts and TV studio, MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) lab ■ Fourth floor east wing The Board of Trustees, the Campaign committees and the administration are deeply grateful to the Parker community, especially students and faculty, for their patience and support throughout this process. As we enter the final phase of the Campaign, our focus is on properly endowing Parker from a financial standpoint. The future of our school will require an endowment that is well beyond the $17 million that currently exists. To be responsible, this campaign must provide Parker with an endowment of at least $52 million. This figure allows the school to meet minimum standards recommended by the National Association of Independent Schools by having an endowment that is two times its current annual operating budget, and it will enable Parker to operate without the panic of having to constantly scramble to balance its budget. More importantly, a properly funded endowment will ensure the continuation of important Parker values: diversity and innovation. The endowment supports the people and programs that are fundamental to the school, directly funding financial assistance for families in need, faculty endowment and educational programs. 42 This list recognizes all donors who have made a commitment to the Founding Our Second Century Campaign between July 1, 2003 and June 30, 2009. Duffy Memorial Scholarship Fund Henry “Buzz” Paschen Fund William Duffy was a rare and gifted teacher who taught English at Parker beginning in 1975, inspiring three decades of students to love literature and writing. He was an impressive, loving and intelligent man who his students and colleagues remember for his passion for teaching and for finding ways to allow each person to see what he saw: the power of imaginative thinking that lies within each of us. To honor the legacy of this great teacher, the school established an endowment in his name following his death in 2002. Parker allocates all contributions to this endowment to the Scholarship Fund. created the Anita McCormick Blaine Planned Giving Society. A planned gift provides the opportunity for donors to help secure the school’s future while also incurring tax benefits either during their lives or through their estates. Blaine, the school’s first benefactor, endowed Parker with the land on which the school currently stands and served as a trustee for the first 30 years. Her outstanding commitment is echoed by many parents, parents emeriti, alumni and friends who have helped ensure the school’s future by including Parker in their wills and estate plans. This year, each classroom traveled back in time to the Middle Ages: students assumed the roles of merchants, stained glass makers, doctors, soldiers and more, as parents and student peers strolled from room to room to hear all about the significance of each role in that era. 55 DONOR LISTS CONTENTS The Susan F. Berkowitz Award for Outstanding Service to Children was created to honor the life and work of the late Dr. Susan F. Berkowitz. Our community’s continuing support of this award is a testament to Dr Berkowitz’s many good works at Francis W. Parker School, her devotion to the well-being of all children and her spirit and approach to life.
