Because all employees negotiate together through their Local, those represented by the union receive better wages and benefits than workers employed in non-union companies. As an employee working under a UFCW contract you are, as a condition of your employment, required to pay dues or fees to the union. People who are members pay dues to the union and people who opt out pay an equivalent fee. These fees, which are authorized by law, along with members’ dues, are your fair share of sustaining your union’s broad range of programs that benefit all workers. Those who choose to file an objection should contact their Union Representative in writing at the Local union’s business address and request information on how these fees are calculated. Nonmembers are also ineligible to vote on collective bargaining agreements, cannot participate in the nomination or election of officers or delegates, cannot participate in strike votes and cannot participate in numerous other union activities. B y now you all know that we successfully completed our contract negotiations with ShopRite and Stop & Shop earlier this fall. The new five year contracts are the best on the East Coast – if not in the nation – in terms of health and welfare benefits and pensions that Harvey Whille continue to protect our members and their families. I want to take this opportunity to reflect on what we – meaning Local 1262’s members, the 60 rank-and-file member negotiation committee and our officers -- went through during the ten months of negotiations. More importantly, I want to talk about the impact this outcome will have on the future. I can honestly say that in my many, many years negotiating contracts, this was the most difficult due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its federally mandated guidelines for health coverage reform. Despite that, we forged a plan that meets and exceeds federal mandates. At a time when pensions and wage increases are practically non-existent we were able to forge an agreement that continues to sustain your pension benefits and wage increases that reflect your employer’s appreciation for your work and its impact on the company’s bottom-line. All told, we emerged after ten months with a contract that protects your health and welfare benefits, a strong pension and on-going wage increases. This outcome would not have been possible without some very important people – you! Throughout the process you stood – in solidarity as one -- behind us and what we were trying to achieve on your behalf. The patience, trust and loyalty our members demonstrated is the very definition of what “Solidarity” can achieve. You knew changes were coming that were beyond our control due to new health mandates. You knew it was important to strengthen our funds so your pension would be secure. And you knew that the fight for wage increases would not be an easy one. Despite all this you stood “ together -- as one. You put your faith and trust in us and waited patiently for the I consider it a privilege to represent each and every one of you – the hardworking, dedicated people of Local 1262. ” contracts to be completed. That type of solidarity will play a vital role in our future. Our industry is strong and continues to grow. However, each day we see more and more encroachment by non-union companies who – with their low wages -- make competition more difficult. As we move forward we must continue to fight the growth of non-union entities. And as we do, I want you to recall this show of Solidarity and what it achieved. We must also lend our solidarity to help our brothers and sisters in other unions as well. From supermarket workers to steam pipe fitters, we are all the same – hard working people who dedicate their lives to their work. The hard working people who deserve to be treated right and paid an honest livable wage. If we do that, America’s labor movement and our unions will not only survive, but can thrive. As we close the door on 2014, I look forward to working together with you and for you. I cannot say it enough, I consider it a privilege to represent each and every one of you – the hardworking, dedicated people of Local 1262. I wish you and your families and friends a peaceful Holiday Season and a healthy and happy New Year. winter 2014 1262 Banner 3 U F C W L o c a l 1 2 6 2 S e c r e t a r y - t r e a s u r e r ’ s M e s s a g e Would you really want to work without a contract? F or most of our members, much of the past year was spent in a “holding pattern” as Local 1262’s officers and our Negotiation Committee worked with ShopRite and Stop & Shop to forge a new contract – also known as a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). WINTER 2014 1262 Banner 5 PARSIPPANY PATHMARK MEMBER MARKS 50 YEARS AS PART OF LOCAL 1262 At an age when many people are retired or thinking about it, Walter Butterfield is still going strong. Walter, who works part-time at the Parsippany Pathmark, recently marked 50 years as a member of Local 1262. Walter first became a member of Local 1262 in 1964 when he joined Grand Union part-time. Union Representative Mike Ebbe and other Local 1262 staff recently met with Walter where he recollected how much things have changed over the years. And believe it or not, he still has his very first pay stub from Grand Union! Congratulations Walter. 2015 GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS Monday, January 26 Monday, April 27 Monday, July 27 Monday, October 26 All meetings are held at Local 1262 Headquarters, 1389 Broad Street Clifton, NJ 07013 Meetings begin at 7 p.m. sharp. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. CHILD CARE GRANTS AVAILABLE Each year UFCW Region One South Women’s Network administers Child Care Grants to UFCW Members in our region. During 2014, several of our members received these one-time grants which are paid directly to the child care providers. Pictured here with Union Representative Gary Sague is Tanya Robertson of the Garwood ShopRite, one of this year’s grant recipients. Tanya, who serves as Shop Steward for her store, has six children with several in child care programs. The deadline for grant applications is December 31 each year. A copy of the application can be found on our web site under our Member Assistance Program tab at the top of the page. 6 1262 Banner WINTER 2014 A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR CONTRACT REPORT COMMITTEE MEMBERS I would like to take this opportunity to thank the nearly 900 members from ShopRite and Stop & Shop who served on our Report Committee during negotiations. You represent the dedication and hard work that each of members displays every day as they work. These members – your co-workers – played a vital role in the Negotiation Process by serving as the voice of the Union in the store and ensuring that all of our brothers and sisters had accurate information regarding negotiations. If you haven’t already done so, please take a minute to thank these very special brothers and sisters. Five years ago, they began collecting food at the seminar to donate to a food pantry. Shop Stewards bring the donations to the seminar and are entered into a raffle. The winner decides where the food will be donated that year. This year’s winner was Sean Daly, Shop Steward at the Perth Amboy ShopRite (pic- tured below). Sean chose St. James’ Food Pantry for the donation of the two vans full of canned and dry goods that were donated at the seminar. Local 1262 delivered the food the following day. Pictured (left to right) are Bob Banasiak, a volunteer from Kiwanis Club 847 in Woodbridge, Local 1262 Union Representatives Steve Blaho and Ed Magierowski, and Pantry volunteers Lloyd Leventhal and Joan Cardinale. OAKLAND SHOP-RITE FRONT-END ASSOCIATE COMPLETES THE NEW YORK MARATHON – TWO TIMES IN A ROW! UFCW Local 1262 member Shane Mastrangelo, a front-end associate at the Oakland ShopRite, recently completed the New York Marathon – for the second year in a row. The New York Marathon is considered one of the most difficult because of the numerous bridges and elevations along its course. Despite his disability, Shane never stopped and ran a steady pace – never hitting the dreaded “wall” where many runners simply run of energy. Shane began training with his father Jim in 2012. His training included running five halfmarathons and several 18 and 20 mile runs. Overall, he ran more than 1,100 miles in preparation for the race. Running with his father Jim, Shane finished the marathon – all 26.2 miles of it – in just over 4 hours. A special thank you to Dot Patson of the Oakland ShopRite for telling us Shane’s story. If you know a member in your store who goes above and beyond, please write to us. They might appear in a future issue.
