NEWSLETTER University of the Third Age. Inc. Forster-Tuncurry Volume 20 No. 2 May to June 2015 Published before term, four times a year, by Forster-Tuncurry U3A, PO Box 94, Forster, 2428—ABN 28 191 516 496 Courses held at Cape Hawke Surf Lifesaving Club, One Mile Beach, Forster Supplied to members as part of their membership fee. Available online at http://forstuncurry.u3anet.org.au/ President’s Report Welcome to the 2nd term for 2015. Term 1 went reasonably smoothly while we adjusted to our changed location. We covered learning, social and physical activities and from what I have been hearing your interests were well served. Many thanks to those who presented or facilitated sessions, the class assistants, tech assistants and everyone who did something to help along the way. IN THIS ISSUE: Please help us cut down on our newsletter costs! We would ask those of you who request both email notification and a mailed copy, to please opt for email notification only. We know there are sometimes good reasons for wanting mailed copies but if you can, please opt for email notification. The web version is in glorious colour, can be magnified for easy reading and you can download it to your desktop so it never disappears under that pile of paperwork. Reports Term 1 Activities Committee List 2/3 2 Transport contact 2 Session reports 2/3 Special Notices 3 We need your feedback DIARY DATES It is not long before the Annual General Meeting in July. The position of Publicity Officer has not been filled for a few years and the committee has been doing what is necessary but not much more than that. We need someone to give greater emphasis to publicity as we still come across people who have no idea what U3A is about. There must be someone among our members who would enjoy this position! Please contact a committee member if you are able to help. (Phone numbers at bottom of page.2) We also need a Coordinator! We cannot operate without a Coordinator! Noline has completed three years (Well done Noline!) and our Constitution does not allow her to continue. She has the job down to a fine art and is happy to support the new coordinator. This position offers a great way to get to know U3A members and the community as a whole. We have many members offering to present sessions so the job is not as onerous as it may sound. Please contact Noline or one of the committee members if you want to know more. I look forward to seeing you at Welcome Morning. It is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with ‘old’ friends, meet new members, be updated on Term 2 activities and enjoy morning tea. See you then. Sue Buls Coordinator’s Report 3 Once again, we are offering a variety of programs that will educate, entertain, raise awareness of issues likely to affect most of us as we grow older, keep us fit and stimulate our brain cells. Thank you to all the people who have offered to present interesting and informative sessions. It is wonderful that there several members who contribute term after term and I can’t thank them enough. Without them, we wouldn’t have a program. Term 2 Courses Mon / Tues 4 Tues / Wed 5 Wed / Thur 6 Thur/Fri 7 Term 1 Calendar 8 Everyone has life experiences, interests and ideas that could easily become a worthwhile session for our members. If you have ideas, please mention them. If you don’t feel confident in talking to a group, someone else could work with you in preparing and presenting your ideas. It was great to meet so many new members in Term One. I hope you all have felt welcome and part of the U3A team. So many of you, along with our established members, have helped to make our program so successful. Thank you. The two weekly sessions of Balance “N” Bones have been going well. Not only are we increasing and maintaining our fitness levels, we also have fun and lots of laughter. This program is ideal for any fitness level and is for men as well as women. So come on male members and join in. You may be very surprised how much fitter and stronger you will become. Maybe you will even develop a six pack! This program is also great for keeping your brain active. Square dancing is another program where we laugh a lot, get fit and exercise our brain cells. Come and join in. This is my last Coordinator’s report as my tenure finishes at the end of Term two. I will willingly work with the new coordinator during Term three. However, we desperately need someone to offer to take on this role. I have loved meeting so many people and getting to know them well, and this has brought great enjoyment into my life. INSERT Thank you all for giving me this opportunity. Enrolment Form Please complete and return the attached Annual Survey by Welcome Morning on 4 May. Annual Survey Noline Cornhill, Coordinator You can bring them to U3A on Enrolment Day, Welcome Morning or email them to: noline.cornhill@inet.net.au BUSH POETS—17th March. STORIES IN SANDSTONE—PART 2 Tuesday 24th March. The Bush Poets session was well attended and we enjoyed listening to everyone’s favourite bush poem. Some were personal compositions and some from well known and not so well known poets. What is the meaning behind the picture above? Carole McGuffog and Margaret cooked the dampers and we all enjoyed “Cocky’s Joy” (damper and golden syrup) for morning tea. On the 24th March Margaret regaled us with part two of her “Stories in Sandstone” series. Everybody was amused at some of the unusual gravestone inscriptions which Margaret had collected in the form of a Power Point presentation. Above L to R: Anne Hailes, Noline Cornhill, Ann Miller, Margaret Ball, Gwen Cochrane . Photo by Carole McGuffog. Margaret also had a store of anecdotes about sandstone and its reputation as a building material. For instance we were told that any inscription in sandstone will not weather and slowly fade away, but will instead become deeper and more pronounced with time. And yet it has a hard outer face that will wear well and withstand the elements. U3A SINGERS Our U3A singers, led by Geraldine Mullin, have been entertaining our members at special functions, such as St Patrick's Day and our Christmas Parties for a number of years. As well, they visit Nursing Homes to sing for the residents and also perform at local Aged Care events. Copyright rules mean that the singers must purchase their own music books and this can be quite expensive. It was welcome news recently to learn that their submission to the Great Lakes Council for assistance under the Community Grants Funding Program was successful. Well done Geraldine and company! Thank you Great Lakes Council. It's the soap picture that Colleen McGregor did after our Stories in Sandstone session. Everyone was inspired to bring out their artistic side after Margaret Guider’s presentation. Margaret had also gone to some trouble to give us the opportunity to try our skills by carving our own inscriptions in soap with some supplied “Carving Sticks”. I tried this and carved an inscription I had seen on a Gravestone in Tombstone Arizona. This was the grave of a man who had died in a gunfight, it read: Les Moore Two shots from a 44 No less no more. This was an interesting talk and I heard Noline arrange with Margaret for another session in this series. I am sure we all look forward to it. Wal Stemp DO YOU NEED TRANSPORT TO CAPE HAWKE SURF CLUB? We realise not everybody has a car and the bus service is non-existent. So if you need a lift to and from a session, please phone Pat on: 0431 339 351 If no answer leave a message and Pat will call you back. We enjoyed Coffee Morning at the Brass Bell Cafe on 26 March - but it was rather embarrassing when only 8 of the 33 people turned up. Colleen and the management re-arranged the tables which had been specially set up for 23 people! And it was such a bargain! Nice food at $7 each! Jan Bennett Of 33 members enrolled for the coffee morning, only TEN APOLOGIES were received.. L to R: Judy Shand, Noelle White, Colleen McGregor, Carol Sinclair, Anne King, Janet Lawrence, Maurice ?, at the Brass Bell Café, Photo taken by Jan Bennett. This is a great example of how IMPORTANT it is to either NOT enrol for coffee OR at least phone the tutor to apologise if you cannot attend. Colleen had made special arrangements with the café to cater for this function and was very embarrassed on the day. Road Safety For Seniors Tuesday 24th February Becky Hunter, Road Safety Officer for the Council, presented very thought provoking information on how to be safe on our roads, as a driver and a pedestrian. This included: changes to the NSW road rules; using roundabouts, older driver licensing, using motorised wheelchairs on the roads; strict rules for using mobile phones and tips for staying safe as a pedestrian. This was an excellent session and we will be exploring these issues further during Term 3. Noline Cornhill WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK. On the back of the enrolment form we have included our Annual Survey. Your input would be greatly appreciated. You will notice that Balance and Bones is now only on Tuesday and Friday. If you would like to add Wednesday, insert your comment on the survey form. Another suggestion has been put forward to have a luncheon club for U3A members, please indicate your interest on the survey form. POSITION VACANT Noline is worn out, we are looking for a member to volunteer to do the Co-ordinator’s job (or maybe two could share it). The position needs to be filled at the AGM so give it some thought and contact one of the committee if you would like to “have a go”. “Hallidays Garden Club invites U3A members to their Open Gardens weekend to view 7 gardens on Saturday 2nd May to Sunday 3rd May from 10 am to 4 pm, entry fee is $15 per person covering all weekend.” Collectors – Carole McGuffog They say laughter is the best medicine, so if you want some joy in your life, come to Collectors. Proceeds will go to Manning Great Lakes Branch of RDA (Riding for the Disabled).
