Orchard Gardens Assisted Living HONORING THE PAST, INVESTING IN THE FUTURE 2015 Autumn Newsletter 2015 National Assisted Living Week Orchard Gardens Assisted Living celebrated National Assisted Living Week, September 13-19. The theme was “Nourishing Life, Mind, Body, Spirit”. We had a week full of activities and entertainment. There was an Ice Cream Social where families were invited in, a Breakfast Smoothie Bar, Bingo (Community, Hoedown and Bingo with Michael), two outside entertainers who came in to perform, a Hoedown Luncheon where staff performed, Bible Study, Resident Surprise, and a Big Red Chili Feed. The highlight of the week was a creative production, “Good Afternoon Orchard Gardens”, put on by staff and one outside guest. It was the Emmy Award winning talk show with host, Glenda Gardens. There was music, laughter and fun between staff and residents. Our first guest was Elvis Presley who had been lying low since his visit last year to OG. He felt “All Shook Up” to come back and visit the residents. Then there was Carnac the Great who shared her abundant wisdom with suggestions like, “Always keep your words soft and sweet in case you have to eat them later.” Mrs. Green Jeans from Green Acres made an appearance with her great pumpkin and her Farmer’s Almanac; her overwhelming word for the year was “WET”. The next guest was Mr. GoLightly, an author with the newest book out entitled, “Constipation, Is it Fact or Fiction?” Glenda Garden’s sidekick shared the “Top Ten Reasons to Live at Orchard Gardens”. Orchard Gardens #1 Husker Fan made her way through the crowd to the Nebraska Tunnel Walk song dressed in all the Nebraska gear. The residents sang the Nebraska Fight Song and were charged up for the big game on Saturday. The last guest was Edith Bunker. Edith got the resident’s laughing so hard they were crying. Everyone was having so much fun after the show, music was playing, the staff started a dance line and residents just joined in. What a memorable week! Our main focus here at Orchard Gardens is “Health” and “Safety”. We take it seriously so we offer health and awareness programs to give our residents the tools to be safer in and out of their homes. We offered our traditional “Annual Flu Clinic” and we also hosted a “Balance Clinic” that would help each individual resident specifically with their fall risks and how to help side step those falls and injuries. It is that time of year again with the holidays coming where there is hustle and bustle but we need to remember to take care of ourselves. Make sure and get your rest, stay hydrated and eat right, practice washing your hands frequently and stay active. Remember these tips so we can all enjoy the season at hand. To feel good is truly something to be thankful for. ENJOY YOUR FALL BY PREVENTING FALLS Orchard Gardens put on a “Balance Clinic” where residents learned tips for prevent falls and in-home safety awareness. Pictured right are representatives of Gentiva, Jody White and Kelly McCann helping individual residents with their specific risk factors. 2015 Autumn Newsletter Let’s Fall in Love with the Activity Department We do our best to create an Activity Calendar that is fresh with new ideas and a little bit of everything for everyone. If you want to stay active, there are things to do. Staying involved and making a connection with others is so important for your mind, body and soul and over all health. Even coming down early to lunch and making a connection there helps stimulate conversation and the making of friends. When you make a connection or see the smile of a friend, it’s like a ray of sunshine and we all need that warmth that offers hope of a beautiful day. We want to encourage you to stay active and be well! Check out our website for all our activities and join in on the fun! Above: Residents making a fall craft. It’s fun to share our treasures with our friends in our Orchard Gardens community. Being thankful is one of the most rewarding activities one can possibly do; it generates good feelings and positive energy. It changes your mood and lifts your spirits. The more you are thankful for things in your life, the more life gives you to be thankful for! It is the season to be thankful! What are you thankful for? Orchard Gardens Assisted Living is proud to have a Resident’s Council, a voice of our residential community. Resident Council is presented in a positive, enthusiastic manner to residents, families, staff and administration. They meet monthly to discuss ideas, suggestions and concerns and are solely a functioning body of Orchard Gardens Residents. Minutes from the meetings are given to management monthly; and at times, staff are invited in to share as well. It is another connection between residents and staff that offers support of one another. In November, they had a speaker come in and discuss “Stress and Depression Surrounding the Holidays”. Christy Roubicek, LCSW from Pando Geriatric Counseling shared with the residents that they should practice good sleep habits, eat right and stay active; and in closing, she encouraged residents to get involved, have some fun and to enjoy the blessings of each day throughout the holiday season.
