I want to talk to you.” It adds an element of humanity to our day, breaking down an invisible barrier between us. June 4 is National Nametag Day, a day when everyone in the city is invited to wear a nametag. There will be two two stations in Pittsburgh: Outside of Dream Cream Ice Cream at 539 Liberty Avenue and at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont where we will hand out nametags prior to the day’s showings. Violent, quirky, and darkly funny, Fargo delivers an original crime story and a wonderful performance by McDormand. —Rottentomatoes.com Oscar Micheaux was the first major African-American feature filmmaker, and produced more than 44 films during the silent cinema era through the mid-1950s. Many of his films were open, blunt, and thought-provoking regarding certain racial issues of that time. Body and Soul, perhaps his best known film, is a direct critique of the corruption and dishonesty among the clergy of his day. He cast singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson in his film debut in dual roles as an escaped convict posing as the minister of a Southern black church and as the convict’s upstanding brother. Made by a black filmmaker for black audiences, the film has an almost entirely all-black cast and crew. Paul Robeson, the son of a minister who had been an escaped slave, had attended Rutgers University and distinguished himself on the concert stage. Robeson appeared at the request of Eugene O’Neill in his plays All God’s Chillun Got Wings and The Emperor Jones, also starring in the 1933 film version of the latter work. He made a handful of other films, notably singing Ol’ Man River in Show Boat (1936), but his leftist political views aroused great controversy, and he made his final movie appearance in Tales of Manhattan (1942). He continued his concert career in Europe through the 1960s and has become an outstanding symbol of black consciousness and pride. Jasiri X first burst on the national and international Hip-Hop scene with the powerful hit song Free the Jena 6, which was played on more than 100 radio stations and was named Hip-Hop Political Song of the Year. His debut album, American History X, was named Album of the Year at the Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Awards. A six time Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Award winner, Jasiri recently became the first Hip-Hop artist to received the coveted August Wilson Center for African American Culture Fellowship. A founding member of the anti-violence group One Hood, Jasiri started the 1Hood Media Academy to teach young African-American boys how to analyze and create media for themselves. Doors open at 7pm, introduction by early Black Cinema historian Joseph Kennedy IV at 8, with film and performance to directly follow. SERIES. The Friends of the Hollywood Theater receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. presented thanks to SPECIAL ENGAGEMENTS CAT IN THE BRAIN 10 PM, FRIDAY & SATURDAY, JUNE 10 &11 Never before released in the U.S. theatrically, the Hollywood Theater is pleased to present the new digital DCP transfer of Lucio Fulci’s Cat in the Brain! In case there was any doubt, it’s Italian splatter with plenty of guts and gore. Director Lucio Fulci plays a horror filmmaker who goes to a psychiatrist because the types of films he makes are starting to disturb him, he suspects that his German producers are Nazis, and he believes he may be a killer himself. Cat in the Brain has been called the horror film equivalent of Federico Fellini’s 8½, using cynical, Grand Guignol humor. Juxtaposing gory horror clips from several of his own past horror films, which he either directed and/or produced, Lucio Fulci shot a wrap-around segment featuring his own plot and used Vincenzo Tomassi’s film editing (as well as his own voice over) to create the storyline—a personal insight into the effects of horror filmmaking on the psyche. (Comedy Horror/1990/ R/133min) Sadism, carnage, brutality, lust, and utter psychosis delivered only as Fulci can. —Clive Barker WAY OUT WEST 3 pm, Sunday, June 19 (FATHER’S DAY) New Digital Restoration! XANADU IGGY POP LIVE IN BASEL 2015 OPENS JUNE 10 OPENS JUNE 16 In this film, the mysterious Kira (Olivia Newton-John) appears to assist and inspire a young artist, Sonny Malone (Michael Beck). Kooky abandon and unembarassed chutzpah make it a movie nobody dared to love. —Film Experience There’s a reason why many consider Iggy Pop the godfather of punk—every single punk band of the past and present has either knowingly or unknowingly borrowed a thing or two from Pop and his late 1960s-early ’70s band, the Stooges, who reunited in 2003 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Iggy Pop, an outstanding artist known for his outrageous and unpredictable stage antics, sings at the Baloise Session in Basel, Switzerland, where he was honored with a 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. This fantastic performance features many of Iggy Pop’s top hits, including I Wanna be Your Dog,The Passenger, Lust for Life, and many more. On May 31, 1986, Judas Priest fans were filmed in their natural environment, a concert arena parking lot in suburban Maryland. Thirty years later, Heavy Metal Parking Lot is considered among the greatest rock and roll documentaries ever recorded. Once found only via underground tape trading, Heavy Metal Parking Lot launched a “parking lot genre” that continues to resonate today. (Documentary/1986/UnRated/17min) Heavy Metal Picnic focuses on the 1985 Full Moon Jamboree, a weekend field party bacchanal that took place at “The Farm,” home to a cast of colorful characters who lived and partied alongside unamused neighbors in the McMansions of Potomac. The Full Moon Jamboree, an affair so raucous that it made the evening news, was the farm party to end al farm parties, and much of it was recorded using a home video camera and a stolen CBS News microphone swiped from the Reagan Inauguration earlier that year. Twenty-five years later, we revisit the scene and meet the people behind the party, as well as the musicians who performed there.
