Her enthusiasm for exercise is entirely contagious – after days spent with her, our entire team understood why her clients love her as much as they do. And they do – even after her signature multi-move burpees. Her joie de vivre is echoed by the phalanx of incredible athletes we’ve profiled in our Olympics portfolio. WH’s creative director, Rob Cilliers, descended on Durban a few weeks ago to catch our elites in action at the African Champs. These were some of their last fixture dates on home soil before the Rio Olympics, which kicks off this month. You’re not going to see all of them competing, which is one of the many reasons we launched the Women’s Health I Support Women In Sport initiative earlier this year... To shine the spotlight on local sports women whose achievements are under-valued or unrecognised and whose disciplines are often woefully under-funded and under-represented in the media. These women are absolute powerhouses – amazing role models who sometimes hold down families and careers along with relentless schedules. We are utterly in awe of them. And we’ll be cheering come August (and beyond)... And these bodies come in all shapes and sizes. There are those bodies that are wanting to transform – to slim down or strengthen up – and those bodies wanting to perform: to be stronger, faster, more flexible, powerful. And somewhere in the middle there are a whole heap of us who are just trying to perfect a triceps dip... Or get through the #WHGetsFit Staff Fitness Challenge. Our desk-chair-piking, fit-pole-dancing deputy editor, Wanita, will tell you that it’s all about setting a goal, which is why she insisted that each of us do exactly that when we committed to our fitness challenge. And I hate to admit it, but she was right. (I really hope she’s not reading this – I’ll never live it down!) Once I’d determined what I wanted to achieve from the 12-week fitness programme, it became something to work towards and track my progress against. And I’m a little ashamed at how it’s made me work so much harder. I admit now that, when left to my own fitness devices, I may have been a bit of a slacker. Oh, I’d show up and do something, but if the mood wasn’t right, the planets in alignment, the leggings on point, it was a verrry lacklustre effort. Not so with a singular goal in mind.
