Wired for beauty
To create a stunning backdrop for an
art-glass bead, simply coil twisted,
gold-filled wire into a basic choker

bead weaving
Briolettes on parade
Elbow to elbow, briolettes
and crystals make for pretty
pageantry in a bracelet
Tip
Affordable fill-ins. To cut back on costs, substitute
pressed-glass petals for the cubic zirconias, 110 seed
beads for the 2 mm round beads, and 3 mm bugle
beads for the 2.1 mm tube beads.
1. Cut two 6-ft. (1.8 m) pieces of
22-gauge (0.64 mm) twisted wire and
an 18-in. (46 cm) piece of 16-gauge
(1.29 mm) wire. Coil one twisted
wire around the 16-gauge core wire
(Wirework Basics, p. 111). Repeat with
the second twisted wire. Remove the
coils from the core.
2. String a crystal on a head
pin, and make a wrapped loop
(Wirework Basics). Repeat to
make 35 more dangles.
3. Center an art-glass bead on
the core wire, and string an
equal number of dangles on
each end. Curve the core wire
to fit your neck, and determine
the desired finished length.
String a coil on each end of the
core wire, and trim an equal
length from each coil to fit the
desired length, if necessary.
Don’t trim the core wire yet.
4. Slide the components to
the hook end of the choker.
Cut the core wire 2 in. (5 cm)
beyond the end of the coil.
Using roundnose pliers, make
a large loop perpendicular
to the hook, leaving a 1⁄4-in.
(6 mm) tail. Slide the coil away
from the loop, and hammer
the loop (photo 3). Slide the
coil over the loop’s tail. Shape
the choker to fit your neck.

1. Slide the components to
one end of the core wire.
Using a chasing hammer,
hammer the opposite end
of the core wire on a bench

2. Using roundnose pliers, form
the paddle into a small loop.
Grasp the core wire about
3⁄4 in. (1.9 cm) from the loop,
and bend the wire over the
pliers to form a hook. Hammer
the top of the hook to harden
it (photo 2).
Don’t pull the thread too tight
in the first strand. A medium
tension will allow the crystals
to form even clusters when you
sew through the shared 2 mms
between the strands.

Clasp
by Linda J. Augsburg
A handmade art-glass bead sparked the inspiration
for this easy wirework choker. To customize it,
try different combinations of beads. For example,
you could change the look dramatically by using
a round focal bead with clusters of dangles in
complementary, rather than coordinating, colors.
A built-in
hook-and-eye
clasp makes for
a pretty finish.

Wallet-friendly wire. Gold-filled wire is
gorgeous, no doubt, but you need a little
over 13 ft. (4 m) of it for this project. Try brass
wire instead; you’ll get the warm look of gold
without the price tag.

Two strands of beads take on a whole new look when
you connect clusters of crystals and add an edging of
briolettes. Metallic beads set off the colorful accents
and make for a nice contrast with all that glitz!
1. On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of Fireline,
pick up a 2 mm round bead
and a soldered jump ring,
leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail.
Sew back through the 2 mm.
2. Pick up a 2.1–3 mm tube

crystal, a 2 mm, a 4 mm, and
a 2 mm. Repeat this pattern
12 times, then pick up a tube,
a 2 mm, and a soldered jump
ring, and sew back through
the last 2 mm.
3. Pick up a tube, a 2 mm, and
a 4 mm. Sew back through the
2 mm between the last pair of
4 mms in the previous strand
(figure a, a–b). Pick up a 4 mm,
a 2 mm, a tube, a 2 mm, and
a 4 mm. Sew through the 2 mm
between the next pair of 4 mms
in the previous strand (b–c).
Repeat the pattern to point d.
4. Pick up a 4 mm, a 2 mm, and

I love the look of a sculptured
shape covered by beads.
Haskell did this technique
superbly well. In addition to
chain, try this to cover any
surface: sprockets, bike parts,
found objects, shells, and glass
shards—anything you find that
you wish to cover. All you need
to do is use this beyond-easy
technique called lashing. We’ll
get some practice in this project.

tep-by-step
1 Cut a 20-in. piece of wire. Anchor the wire on a chain link. String five
faceted rondelles. Using the lashing technique (p. 21), start to wrap and
lash a beaded chain link A–D.
2 As you run out of wire, reinforce the stitching by backtracking through a
few beads and knotting the wire a few times around an anchored wrap
E. Anchor a new wire and continue lashing until the chain link is covered
as you like F.
D
3 Wrap several chain links with beads. I cover about one-fourth and leave
three-fourths exposed, both for aesthetic reasons and so the links lie
nicely next to each other.
4 Optional closure: String 12 rondelles and a crimp bead. Loop the
rondelles through an end chain link. Go back through the crimp bead
and crimp. String about 3 in. of rondelles and a crimp bead. String
12 110s and half a clasp. Go back through the crimp bead. Pull the wire
ends tight and crimp the crimp bead. Trim the wire. Repeat on the other
end of the necklace with the remaining clasp half.
E
5 Optional closure: Cut the ribbon to the desired length for finishing
the necklace. Loop one end through an end chain link. Freeform wire
wrap the ribbon and tail together, using fine brass wire. Repeat on the
other end.

STEP 1: MEASURE THE RING BLANK
Using a ring mandrel, determine the size of a ring that fits you
comfortably, or use a set of finger gauges. (See “Measuring
Your Ring Size” on p. 106 for more details.)
This ring will be textured with flared sides; it will stretch
and grow as you shape it, so the size of the blank has to be
adjusted. For example, after making a prototype of this ring,
A
I found that the ring stretched about 3.5 sizes by the time it
was done! So, to make a size 8.5 ring, I started with a size
5 ring blank. If you want to skip the flaring, size the blank
two sizes smaller and texture until the ring is the right size
in step 5.
Subtract 3.5 from your ring size and, looking at the column
for 20-gauge metal on the Ring Blank Size by Metal Gauge
table on p. 108, find the starting length in millimeters. Mark

that length on the sterling sheet. Set a pair of dividers to 5mm
and drag one point along the edge of the metal as you scribe
a parallel line [A]. Cut out the blank with French shears. Each
end should be straight and perpendicular to the length. Using
a rawhide mallet, flatten the blank on a steel block [B]. If the
strip warps or curves, place it on its edge, with the concave
edge facing the steel block, and tap gently on the opposite
edge to straighten it.
You’ll shape the band on a ring mandrel with a rawhide mallet,
first curving both ends of the blank. Work on the ring mandrel
at the size that matches the starting point for the ring—in
this case, size 5. Rest one end of the mandrel on a pad, such
as a towel, on the edge of the table. Place the blank on the
mandrel, with one end extending ½ in. (13mm) [C]. Hit the
end with the mallet, curving it against the mandrel [D]. Repeat
on the other end of the blank, curving the metal in the same
F
direction. Extend the blank another ½ in. [E] and hit it again
with the mallet. Continue to curve and extend the blank until
it’s wrapped around the mandrel [F]. Squeeze it closed to
check the size. It should be close to your starting size. If the

size is larger or more than a half-size smaller than your size,
check the measurement against the ring blank size chart. If it’s
too large, trim it to size. If it’s a half-size smaller, you can resize
it after soldering (see p. 107).
