Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa jumped to
victory with Citizenguard Cadjanine Z
in Saturday night’s $280,000 FEI World
Cup™ Grand Prix CSI-W 4*, presented
by The Bainbridge Companies, at the
2014 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian
Festival (FTI WEF) in Wellington, FL. The
class featured a roster of the world’s top
riders and saw a win for the legendary
show jumper and his promising new
mount ahead of three young U.S. riders.
Jessica Springsteen and Vindicat W,
Wilton Porter and Paloubet, and Katie
Dinan with Nougat du Vallet finished
second, third and fourth respectively.
Alan Wade (IRL) set the track for
45 competitors that qualified during
the week to compete in Saturday
night’s World Cup qualifying grand prix
competition. Seventeen combinations
jumped clear to advance to the jumpoff and seven of those were able to
clear the second round course without
fault. Rodrigo Pessoa and Alain van
Campenhoudt’s Citizenguard Cadjanine
Z blazed to victory in 39.52 seconds.
Twenty-two-year old Jessica
Springsteen flew to a second place
finish with Stone Hill Farm’s Vindicat W
in 41.97 seconds. First to go in the jumpoff, 20-year-old Wilton Porter set a very
fast pace with Sleepy P Ranch LLC’s
Paloubet in 42.64 seconds to finish
third. Twenty-one-year-old Katie Dinan
finished fourth with Grant Road Partners’
Nougat du Vallet in 43.11 seconds.
The Leading Lady Grand Prix Rider
Award was also presented to Dinan on
Saturday night for her success throughout
week nine. The award is presented by
Martha Jolicoeur of Illustrated Properties
in memory of Dale Lawler.
For his win, Pessoa was presented
with the Herman ‘Kappy’ Kaplan
Perpetual Memorial Trophy, established
for Kappy with fondness by the Farriers
of the 1995 WEF. Pessoa has won the
trophy twice before, topping the week
nine grand prix in back to back years
in 2010 aboard Double H Farm’s Night
Train and 2011 with Double H Farm’s
HH Let’s Fly.
Pessoa started riding Citizenguard
Cadjanine Z, a 12-year-old
Zangersheide mare (Canabis Z x
Feinschnitt I Z), in July of 2013 and has
been working on developing a good
rapport with what he calls a “special”
and particularly quirky horse.
The pair made big steps competing
in Wellington this winter, including a

Artisan Farms Young Rider
Grand Prix Series Semi-Final
The $25,000 Artisan Farms Young
Rider Grand Prix Series Semi-Final was
held on Friday night, presented by the
Dutta Corporation in association with
Guido Klatte. Fifty young riders under
the age of 25 competed under the
lights in the International Arena, with
seven clear rounds to jump-off, and a
win for 20-year-old Nicole Bellissimo
of Wellington, FL. Riding Bellissimo
LLC’s VDL Bellefleur, an eight-year-old
KWPN mare by Cardento x Emilion,
Bellissimo jumped the only double
clear round in the jump-off to take
top honors in 51.64 seconds.
Twenty-four-year-old Jordan
MacPherson of Toronto, Ontario,
finished second aboard JEM Stables’
Piccobello du val de Geer with the
fastest four-fault round in 45.39
seconds. Twenty-year-old Adrienne
Sternlicht of Greenwich, CT, jumped
into third with four faults in 47.24
seconds aboard Starlight Farms’
Oreade de Dames.
The young rider series was
developed thanks to Artisan Farms
as a stepping stone for up-andcoming riders as they gain experience
competing at the grand prix level.
In addition to great experience for
the riders, it can also be a stepping
stone for young horses. In the case of
Nicole Bellissimo and VDL Bellefleur,
the series serves as an amazing
opportunity for both horse and rider.
“She is actually a very special
horse for me,” Bellissimo stated after
her win. “I have had her for about a
year-and-a-half. She is only eight,
so I got her when she was turning
seven, and I am the only one that has
shown her. I did her throughout her
seven-year-old year and I brought her
to Spruce Meadows last summer, so
she has done a lot as a young horse.
We moved her up this year and this
is the biggest class that she has ever
done, so it is really exciting for me that
she went out and did so well. She is
just stepping up to doing this level.”
Bellissimo showed in the young
rider series two years ago in 2012,
but explained that she did not have a
horse to compete with last year. “This
year is the first year that I have done
all of the classes,” she noted. “It is
fantastic for bringing up young horses
that aren’t quite ready to go in the
WEFs (Challenge Cup) or the grand
prix classes, but maybe you want to

WEEK 10
As the FTI Consulting Winter
Equestrian Festival draws to a close, the
last weeks are celebrated in style with
Horseware’s sponsorship of week 10,
March 12th – 16th.
The Horseware Grand Prix CSI 3* runs
on March 15th, with a prize of $125,000
and a host of Irish entrants looking to
claim the St. Patrick’s week prize.
The FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian
Festival has partnered with Horseware for
3 years to produce the most luxurious
and sought after award blankets of the
show season, a natural alliance between
two giants of the equestrian industry.
Horseware is also delighted to have
teamed up with The Tackeria this year
to offer FTI WEF competitors and visitors
the chance to see selected items from the
Horseware collection on Vendors Row,
ranging from the popular Micklem bridle
to fashionable clothing and of course the
incomparable and legendary blankets.
Horseware is also thrilled to announce
that designer and creator of the award
winning Ice-Vibe boots, Louisa Williams,
will be available to talk to customers
throughout Horseware week.
Now approaching 30 years in the
blanket business, Horseware started
with a small team in Dundalk, Ireland,
in 1985. After months of research and
hand-stitching the prototype, the now
iconic Rambo Original was born, setting
the standard for modern blanket design.
Since then, Horseware has grown to
become the world’s most trusted
producer of horse blankets.
March 12 - 16, 2014
Today, the Horseware Rambo range
is still made in the same town in Ireland
under Tom MacGuinness’s watchful eye,
and with the same attention to detail and
high quality material that they prided
themselves on in 1985.
Constantly striving to produce the
best they can, Horseware has become
a leading manufacturer of clothing for
horses and riders. Always seeking out
untrodden paths, pushing boundaries
and finding new challenges, in the
Horseware collection you will always find
the most innovative and unexpected of
products.

The ninth week of competition for the
FTI WEF brought another round of top
hunter and equitation competition at the
Main Grounds of the PBIEC.
Professional rider Havens Schatt kicked
off the week with division championships
across both pre-green hunter divisions.
Her first win came in the Loddon Stalls
Pre-Green Hunter Level 1 division, which
she won aboard Tracy Sheriff-Muser’s
Aristocrat. Artistocrat won two over
fences classes and the under saddle
for the win. The six-year-old Oldenburg
gelding was bred by Gestuet Lewitz, out
of Varbuch Wonneke by Balou de Rouet.
The reserve champion for the division was
Quartermaster, owned by Laurie Stevens
and ridden by Lainie Wimberly. Wimberly
piloted Quartermaster to third, second,
and second over fences.
Schatt clinched another division
championship title in the Pre-Green
Hunter Level 2 division with Dream, a
seven-year-old Oldenburg gelding out of
Acrobat II by Calido I owned by Carolyn
Gouse. Dream and Schatt were first,
second, fourth, and first over fences.
Kelley Farmer and Connotation took
the reserve champion title after winning
the under saddle and one over fences
classes in addition to jumping to third
and fourth place ribbons.
Junior competitors duked it out once
the weekend arrived, with Kylie Geddes
and Chabliano Z picking up the first junior
hunter championship title of the week.
Geddes and Chabliano Z, owned by
Geddaway Farm, were first, fifth, sixth, and
first over fences and sixth under saddle to
secure the division title in the Entrust Small
Junior Hunter 16-17 division. Chabliano
Z is a seven-year-old Zangersheide
gelding out of Cassandra Z by Chablis I
Z. Reserve champion was Kate Ross and
Friday Night, owned by KAR LLC. The pair
were second, sixth, first, and fourth over
fences and fourth under saddle.
The Junior Hunter 3’3” division
awarded the championship title to Lilly, an
eleven-year-old Oldenburg mare ridden
by Lili Halterman and owned by Kimberly
Stewart. Lilly and Halterman were second
under saddle and first, fourth, and first
over fences. Halterman also picked up
reserve honors with her own horse,
Genuine, after placing first, second, and
sixth over fences and fifth under saddle.
Equitation divisions saw many talented
junior riders, including the Equitation
12-14 division. Amy Muslin rode her own
Zucchero to the tricolor honors with first
and second place ribbons over fences
in addition to earning fifth place on the
flat. Zucchero is a 10-year-old Dutch
Warmblood gelding. Reserve champion
for the division was Nina A. Rontondo and
her horse Urostar C. The pair were fourth
on the flat and sixth and first over fences.
Ashleigh Scully and Partner in Crime
claimed the Equitation 11 & Under
division after winning both over fences
classes and placing second on the flat.
Partner in Crime is a 13-year-old Welsh
Pony cross gelding out of Center Piece by
Welch Hills. Bethie Dayton rode Prosper
Park LLC’s Gossip Girl to the reserve title
for the division, placing first on the flat
and sixth and second over fences.
The youngest competitors of the
FTI WEF wrapped up their divisions on
Sunday, beginning with the Walk/Trot
division. Caroline Signorio rode Doll
House Farm’s Davric Star Sailor to the
division champion title after winning
the walk/trot class, placing second in
the walk/trot/pleasure, and earning a
second place ribbon in the walk/trot/
jump class. Davric Star Sailor is a 13-yearold Welsh Pony out of Davric Dixiebelle
by Brookside Mega Star.
The Younger Crossrails division was
also seen on Sunday, with Chloe Watrous
emerging victorious with Highlands
Bridget Jones. Watrous rode Highlands
Bridget Jones, owned by Elizabeth Foster,
to first and third over fences and second
under saddle. Highlands Bridget Jones is
a 13-year-old Welsh Pony/Thoroughbred
cross out of Cindarella Jones by Benlea
Rambler, bred by Jeanne Gelber. Reserve
champion for the division was Natalia
Torano and her pony Farnley Romeo.
Farnley Romeo was first under saddle
and second and third over fences with
Torano in the irons.

Kurtz, Gochman, and Pielet Secure Blue Ribbon Victories
In Pony Hunter Derby Classics
The pony hunters took to the grass
derby field at The Stadium at Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center (PBIEC)
on Friday for the $5,000 “Jump for the
Children” Large, Medium, and Small Pony
Hunter Derby Classics during Week 9.
Danny Moore of Spring Hill, FL,
designed the courses for all three pony
classics today, which saw the country’s
top hunter ponies and riders over two
rounds of competition.
Thirteen-year-old Emma Kurtz of
Hudson, OH, emerged victorious from
the Large Pony Classic with Dreamland.
In the Medium Pony Classic, it was nineyear-old Mimi Gochman of New York City
and True Love who rode away with the
blue ribbon. The Small Pony Classic went
to Alexandra Pielet of Highland Park, IL,
and Secret Love.
Kurtz and Dreamland, a nine-year-old
Welsh Pony/Thoroughbred/Warmblood
Cross gelding out of Numero Uno by
Magical Tale owned by Linda Evans,
earned a first round score of 77 before
returning for round two and scoring 87 for

a high score of 164. Second place went
to Freeport and Taylor St. Jacques. The
pair scored 81 in the first round and 82
in round two for a total score of 163. St.
Jacques also took third place with Devil
Mint, who she piloted to an 83 in round
one and a 78 in round two for an overall
score of 161.
Kurtz enjoyed the opportunity to take
Dreamland out on the grass field of The
Stadium. Kurtz has ridden Dreamland
on and off for about a year with trainer
Amanda Lyerly and enjoys the pony’s laidback character and natural jumping talent.
“He’s really smooth around the course.
He’s got great expression and is really
pretty through the bridle,” Kurtz described.
Next to visit the winner’s circle was
Mimi Gochman, aboard David Gochman’s
True Love, a 15-year-old Westphalian
Riding Pony gelding out of St. PR. St.
Haupstutbuch by Costolany. Gochman
topped the Medium Pony Hunter Classic
aboard True Love with a score of 176.
The pair earned a first round high-score
of 90, followed by an 86 in round two.
Second place went to Emma Kurtz and
Blackout with an overall score of 168. The
pair scored 83 in round one and 85 in
round two. Trillville and Hannah Bernstein
completed the top three with a total score
of 161. Bernstein and Trillville earned a 77
in round one followed by an 84 in round
two for the third place finish.
Gochman was thrilled with her win,
especially after being nervous going into
round two as the rider to catch. “I feel
really great! He was such a good boy and
helped me a lot through the course. He
was really good,” Gochman beamed. “That
was my highest score yet. I got [a 90] at
Capital Challenge [Md.] and one here, so
that was really nice!”
The final blue ribbon for the day went
to Alexandra Pielet and Secret Love, a
nine-year-old Welsh Pony gelding out of
Telynau Ballerina by Telynau Royal Charter
owned by Back Country Farm. Pielet rode

Secret Love to a first round high-score
of 86 before following up with an 80 for
their second round. Second place went to
Tazmanian Devil, ridden by Alexa Aureliano
to an overall score just one point shy of
Pielet. The pair finished on a 165 after
scoring 83 in the first round and 82 in
round two. The third place prize went
to Kate Taylor and Quicksilver Butterfly
for their total score of 157. Taylor and
Quicksilver Butterfly earned a 79 in the
round one and a 78 in the second round.
Pielet, who trains with Jill Shulman, was
nervous going into the ring with Secret
Love since it was only their second time
riding on a grass field. She admitted her
first round was smoother, but was overall
happy with how Secret Love handled the
atmosphere on the grass field.
Pielet has been riding Secret Love for
the entire FTI WEF circuit in the Small Pony
Hunter divisions and particularly enjoys
showing off his good looks each week
in the model class. “I love to model him
because he’s so pretty!” Pielet smiled.

step them up from the High Amateurs
or the High Juniors. It is also great for
riders such as myself who are stepping
up to the WEFs, but maybe aren’t as
competitive in that, and want another
stepping stone. I want to thank Artisan
Farms for sponsoring the series because
it is really great for the young horses and
riders such as myself that are moving up
to the next level.”
In her freshman year at Harvard
University in Boston, Bellissimo commutes
back and forth from Wellington each
week to compete between a full schedule
of classes. This week was especially busy,
but the extra traveling paid off in the end.
This is the biggest win of the young
rider’s career, and a very exciting
accomplishment on home turf. “It is my
biggest win so far and it is extra special
with a horse that I have kind of brought
along myself,” Bellissimo acknowledged.
“She means a lot to me, and she is always
fighting for me so much every time she goes
in the ring. She has never done anything
wrong. It was just really exciting that other
people can see how great she is.”
A student in her fourth year at the
University of Western Ontario in Canada,
Jordan MacPherson has had success in
the young rider series before and was very
happy with her rounds aboard Piccobello
du val de Geer, a 15-year-old Swedish
Warmblood mare (Kannan x Skippy II).
“It was exciting,” MacPherson smiled
after the class. “I have had her for about
four years now, and I have done two other
years with her in this series. She came out
here like a pro tonight and was amazing.
She gave me her heart, so I couldn’t be
happier.”
Adrienne Sternlicht, a sophomore
at Brown University, also had a great
experience with her mount Oreade des
Dames, a 12-year-old Selle Francais
mare by Kannan x Hurlevent. “I have
had her for three years, and she was
really my horse that we intended for
these classes,” Sternlicht explained. “I
bought her as a nine-year-old for these
young rider classes, and she has ended
up doing some more. She jumped the
‘WEF’ yesterday. I think it is nice for her
to be challenged with a bigger class every
once in awhile and then we bring her in
this level and 1.45m/1.50m is really her
comfort zone and she is quite a fast horse.
I was really just trying to be a medium
double clear and that didn’t work out,
but she was fantastic tonight and I am
thrilled with the way she went.”
Sternlicht first jumped in the young
rider series two years ago and then was
out last winter with an injury. “This year
for me has been the first year that I really
feel competitive at this level, and I am
starting to be competitive at a bigger
level,” Sternlicht acknowledged. “For me,
I was more nervous for today than I was
for the WEF (Challenge Cup) because I
kind of put pressure on myself in these
classes to really perform. I think it is a
fantastic series, and it is a really neat
experience.”

Ruby et Violette WEF Challene Cup Round
7. Pessoa has big hopes for the mare and
thinks that she has great potential. She
has already done big things, including
a 2012 Olympic Games appearance in
London with Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet.
“She had a couple of good shows last
year,” Pessoa detailed. “In Barcelona in
the Nations Cup Final we were second
and she went clear, and then she won the
Grand Prix in Arezzo. Slowly, we have been
getting better. She is not an easy mare, but
she has a lot of potential, a lot of scope
and she’s really a fighter. She has her own
way, and we are starting to understand her
better, and she really turned a corner here
in Florida. She has been really comfortable,
jumping well and it’s good.”
“She has the potential to jump any
track. She is super brave and she has
tremendous scope, it’s just that some days
she can be a little bit quirky,” Pessoa noted.
“She’s special. She has days that she is not
really into it and she doesn’t give you any
warning. She is fairly unpredictable, but
when she is in the mood to go, she is as
good as any horse out there, and she was
definitely in the mood today!”
Pessoa spoke about the course, which
yielded a large number of clear rounds. “I
didn’t expect the 17 clears,” he admitted.
“The course had a really nice flow to it. It
was nice, but maybe a little bit too nice.
The starting order had a lot of really
good horses, and immediately we saw
clears coming. It was more than what he
wanted I think, but we had a nice jumpoff. The conditions were really perfect.
The temperature was perfect, the footing
was perfect, so I think maybe Alan was
a little bit too soft given the quality of
horses and riders that were on the start
list, but he’s a great builder nonetheless.
They can’t get it right every time, but he
is still one of my favorite course builders.”
“The jump-off suited my horse really
well,” Pessoa added. “I thought if I did the
plan that I had in mind, and everything
showed up right, it could be good, so I
was lucky that everything really showed
up how I wanted. Coming out, I thought
okay, ‘It’s fast, but you never know.’
With so many fast combinations coming
behind you, you never know. I thought if
it wasn’t good enough to win it would be
close - second or third - but in the end it
held up, and I’m really happy.”
Jessica Springsteen was very happy
with her second place finish with Vindicat
W, especially since the young rider has
been commuting back and forth between
Florida and North Carolina for school. She
is in her third year at Duke University.
“He felt great tonight,” Springsteen
said of Vindicat. “I rubbed the third fence
really hard, so I’m lucky it didn’t come
down, but it was great. I thought by the
end the fences got a lot bigger, so I was
surprised there were so many clear, but
I was really happy with him.”
FTI WEF Week 9
Standings and Awards
Continued from Page 1
Springsteen admitted that although
she has gone fast with Vindicat before,
this was probably the fastest she has
gone while still leaving the fences up.
“That’s my problem. I usually go a little
bit too fast and get too much going, so
I tried to keep it together,” she stated.
Springsteen had the additional
challenge of going after the very fast
round that Pessoa put down, and she did
her best to keep up. “I wasn’t expecting
to beat him, but yeah, I was happy,” she
smiled. “Wilton was so fast too. There
were so many fast rounds I wasn’t really
expecting tonight, but he’s naturally a
really fast horse, so if I get to the jumps
correctly it works out.”
Springsteen explained that she has
been going back and forth to school and
skipping two weeks in a row to show.
“This is my second week. I showed
last week, so it was kind of nice,” she
admitted. “I was practicing more, and I
think that helped.”
“It’s hard to really train a lot,” she said
of the challenge to stay competitive while
not riding regularly. “I fly down Wednesday
night and go straight into the ‘WEF’
(Challenge Cup). I think I have gotten
better at not riding as much. I used to get
jumped loose all the time, but I have gotten
used to it a bit more. I’m lucky that I know
my horses really well that I am riding. If I
had a new horse it would be different, but
with Vindicat, it’s my third year with him.
I know him really well, so I feel confident
stepping into a big grand prix.”
Third place finisher, Wilton Porter, is
also a young rider traveling back and forth
from school as a freshman at Vanderbilt
University in Tennessee and has faced the
added challenge of staying up to par to
compete against the world’s best riders
in Wellington.
“I personally kind of feel like an
underdog,” Porter admitted. “If I don’t
do well it’s not the end of the world, but
I’m trying to prove something, so I am
constantly pushing myself harder. Being
a young rider and balancing school and
riding, I have a great team helping me
out, so I can always count on them when
I’m competing.”
Porter went first in the jump-off with
his horse, Paloubet, and set a very fast
time. “I think the first round course
actually suited me because it was a little
more open, which is better for me and
Paloubet because he is definitely a horse
that I try to be softer with,” Porter said.
“The softer I can be, the better he is. In
the jump-off, going first probably worked
out better for me as well because if I had
seen Rodrigo go first, I would have tried
to go faster than I should have! The last
jump, it was definitely fast. I wasn’t sure
how it was going to end up. I’m actually
on spring break this past week, so I have
been able to ride all week, which has
helped for sure.”

Behind the Scenes at FTI WEF:
Meet Awards and Merchandise
Coordinator Kathy Tessaro
As the 2014 FTI Consulting Winter
Equestrian Festival heads into its
tenth week of competition, we would
like to recognize the many dedicated
employees of Equestrian Sport
Productions who help to make this
show one of the best in the world. A
very important part of any horse show
is the presentation of awards, and Kathy
Tessaro is the woman who makes sure
all of the ribbons, coolers, and trophies
are ordered and organized throughout
the year. Tessaro is also in charge of the
WEF Boutiques, ordering and helping to
design the merchandise, and hiring staff,
among her many other responsibilities.
Originally from Guilderland, NY,
Tessaro has lived in Florida for 26
years and is proud to be a part of
the fantastic competition at the Palm
Beach International Equestrian Center.
What is your job at the show?
I am kind of a jack of all trades. I do
the awards during the ESP [year-round]
season, and I do all of the ordering for
WEF. I do all of the ordering for the
boutiques, and I hire all of the staffing
for the boutiques. I also get all of the
plants for the rings, and I basically do
anything else that they need me to do.
DON’T MISS
ANOTHER YEAR
OF SPORT HORSE NEWS
Do you organize the other people
that help with awards? I originally hired
all of the staff that come in to do the
ribbons and manage the awards at the
rings. Marion Maybank takes care of
that for me now. I just oversee and make
sure that everything that is supposed to
be here is here.

What goes into organizing all of
the awards?
It is a lot of work in the sense of just
organizing the sheer volume of it. The
coolers that we get are for our whole
season, it’s not just for WEF. The ribbons
that we have are actually from two
different manufacturers right now, so it
is a matter of changing out to another
one when this is over.

For the boutique, do you help pick
out the merchandise and designs?

The same thing with the clothing for
the staff. I do all of the staff clothing
and make sure that everyone is properly
outfitted. I do all of the ordering, which is
a massive undertaking because of how
many staff we have and the fluctuations
in the staff. That includes all of the
restaurants, food and beverage, jump
crew, and everything. It is quite a lot
of people.

give our input as to what we would like
to see. We are working now with new
manufacturers that would like to join
the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian
Festival, and we are going to be sitting
down with them to design some new
clothes. That part of it is actually quite
fun, to see your visions come to fruition,
and to actually see people like what you
picked out or designed. It is kind of neat.
What is your experience with
horses?
I started riding when I was five.
I started with reiners, and then I got
into english when I was still little and
did the pleasure classes and the
equitation. I got my first horse when
I was about nine and I have had one
all the way up until the last four years
when I retired mine to Virginia. I am
basically too busy to do it anymore.
How did you first get involved with
ESP and WEF?
I actually started over at Littlewood
because I used to show there, and my
daughters showed over there. They
asked me if I would be interested in
doing the awards because at that
time they really didn’t have anybody
and it helped pay for my aspect of the
horses, so that is why I started doing it.
What other hobbies and interests
do you have?
At this point, in the last two years, I
really haven’t been able to do much. I
am so incredibly busy that my days off
are just spent doing mundane things. I

I have two daughters. They are
both in college. One is down here in
school and one is up in Tallahassee
going to school. My oldest daughter
will be done this year and then
moving on to decide what she wants
to do as far as further education.
Do you do any other shows?
I do the Horse Shows By the Bay
with Alex Rheinheimer in Michigan in
the summer. I am out there for a month
and then I come back and basically
start all over again here each year. That
is when we start doing the ordering and
everything else. When I go up to Traverse
City, my daughter and I go hiking up in the
mountains. That is one hobby that I enjoy
doing. There are also dunes and things
that we hike and that is quite fun.
