BIBLIOTHÈQUE SAINTE-BARBE A PLACE FULL OF HISTORY FOUNDED IN THE XVth CENTURY Sainte-Barbe was a medieval college originally built in 1460 on Sainte-Genevieve mountain in the heart of Paris, along with many other colleges at the time. THE LAY OUT IN THE XVIIth AND XVIIIth CENTURIES REVIVAL AFTER THE FRENCH REVOLUTION 1830 RECONSTRUCTION BY THE LABROUSTE BROTHERS (1840-1853) LHEUREUX’S BUILDINGS (1881) XXth CENTURY Starting in the 1940s, the Sainte-Barbe College buildings were demolished except Lheureux’s buildings. On the vacated grounds were built the new Cujas Law Library (1958), « the small » extension of Sainte-Genevieve Library (1954), followed by « the large » one for stacks (1961). PLAN OF THE PRESENT SITE THE PRESENT BUILDINGS The Lheureux’s building, on Valette street, with the main entrance This is the second part of the Lheureux’s buildings, on the other side of the schoolyard. On the north side, a construction built by Daniel Lionel and Raoul Brandon, in 1936, links the two Lheureux’s buildings. On the south side : - a building for the staff’s room - a gym - a building for class rooms (1967, architect : R. Lebret). THE PRESENT VIEW FROM THE SCHOOLYARD THE SAINTE-GENEVIEVE LIBRARY : THE READING ROOM, THE NORDIC LIBRARY, THE STACKS VIEW OF CHARTIERE STREET The Cujas Library at the back, Louis-leGrand high school on the right and secondary entrances of SainteBarbe on the left. On the north side, a wall closes the site, at the back of Ecosse street. Above the wall, a window of the 3rd floor of the 1930s building. BIBLIOTHÈQUE SAINTE-BARBE NEW FONCTIONS IN A HISTORIC SETTING U3M PROJECT The rehabilitation of the Sainte-Barbe college is at the heart of U3M project for university libraries. Three aims : • Multidisciplinary library for undergraduate students • Extra-stacks for Sainte-Genevieve and Cujas libraries • Documentation centers for legal research PLANNING OF SURFACES • Refurbishment of existing buildings Library : 9 240 m² Research : 2 000 m² Common spaces (technical or security) : 1 429 m² • Creation of new surfaces under the yard Cujas stacks : 726 m² Sainte-Geneviève stacks : 726 m² CHOOSING AN ARCHITECT : THE COMPETITIVE PROCEDURE • The programmation was ready at the end of 2001 and the architecture competition was then launched. • Four architects out of 113 were first selected by a jury. They then had to present their project. FOUR TEAMS OF ARCHITECTS : FOUR VERY DIFFERENT PROJECTS • Agence Stinco • Agence Lipsky-Rollet • Agence Desmoulin • Agence Buffi The winner was Antoine Stinco Perspective of 1930s building and yard The biggest problem was how to keep the historical elements as close to their original state as possible while making the building functional. Exemple : the canteen with specific furniture which must be re-used There is the architect’s proposal to re-use the marble tables by placing two together in order to widen them. The author of these mosaics is Facchina, decorator of the Opera Garnier This is the amphitheatre used in the old days for physics and chemistry classes. The very narrow tiers will be widened, but the furniture will have to be reused. The drawing room shows the remains of beautiful metallic architecture Charles Gauthier’bas reliefs : art of drawing accross the ages Other parts of the buildings to be preserved : roofs, façades, the stairs at the back of Lheureux’s buildings, and the stairs of the covered playground. This last obligation has an important impact on the project because it prevents the architect from putting the three buildings at the same level at the ground floor level. This proposal of transformation the 1930s building had to be given up.
