If your hangers are an assortment of wire and plastic freebies
collected over the years from shops and dry cleaners, you’ll never
be able to create the clutter-free look you desire.
However, much more importantly, if you choose the wrong hangers
for your clothes, you’re running the risk that they’ll become
damaged and misshapen.

WHAT WE’VE DONE
This is your ultimate guide to the incredible world of hangers.
We guarantee you’ll be amazed by just how many types
are available!
We’ve also worked out how many will fit into the average
wardrobe, to help you calculate how many you’ll need.
We measured each hanger by placing a board on top and seeing
how thick it was at its widest point. We then added 5mm to each
side of the hanger (e.g., an extra 10mm) to allow for a shirt to be
comfortably hung, before adding an additional 5mm breathing
room for each hanger.
As you look through this guide you’ll see our chart showing,
at a glance, how many hangers you can fit on a typical wardrobe
rail once they’re loaded with clothes!

HOW TO CHOOSE
A HANGER
If there’s one person who really knows
the ins and outs of hangers, it’s Howards’
Senior Buyer, Jim Toby…
“It may seem excessive, to be passionate
about hangers,” says Jim, “but the truth is,
we spend a lot on our clothes, and the way
you hang them actually protects their shape
and how long they’ll last – that’s why you
need a different hanger for coats and
jackets, trousers, T-shirts and dresses, etc.”
Clearly committed to style and substance, Jim makes ‘quality’ his top
priority when sourcing hangers for Howards. For instance, all our
flocked hangers sit on strong resin frames rather than brittle plastic
frames, and the PVC coating on our new PVC hangers is a generous
thickness, making them durable and slip resistant.
Jim elaborates, “Quality is so important, particularly with timber
hangers. That’s why I only source A-grade timbers such as maple
and lotus wood. Did you know that this kind of timber actually

allows for more specialised design features
like curved broad shoulders and notching?
I always tell people you get what you pay
for when it comes to hangers. So don’t be
fooled by the cheaper variety – they’re often
a mix of B or C grades, they’re poorly made
and may damage your clothes.”
Space is another concern. Jim explains,
“A lot of our hangers – like the fine-flocked
variety – are actually quite thin, so they’re
ideal space-savers and great for T-shirts.
You can line up quite a few of them in your wardrobe without
cramping your style – literally!”
Jim is particularly excited by the new range of hangers now
in-store at Howards. “We’ve just introduced a new coat and
trouser hanger design with a timber clamp. We’ve also expanded
our range of felt hangers for adults and children and added five
new designs of PVC-coated shirt and trouser hangers to our stock.
But my personal favourites are the two solid chrome high polished
designs – simply stunning.”
