Somernites
Cruise:
Cruising
for 15 Years

hen a group of car
enthusiasts gathered
in 2000 and decided
that Pulaski County
needed to have an
event for other car enthusiasts, none
of them realized that 2015 would mark
the 15th anniversary of Somernites
Cruise.
The first Somernites Cruise was
held in April 2001; since then it has
grown, and 2014 marked the best year
with a 1,200 car per month average for
the event that runs the fourth Saturday
April through October. It has become
the largest tourist attraction (second
only to beautiful Lake Cumberland) in
the region and is hailed as one of the
largest monthly collector car events in
the United States.
The event has been featured
on television shows My Classic Car,
Horsepower TV, Car Crazy, and Mother’s Car Show series. It has also been
highlighted in several national magazines, including Hemmings Muscle Machines, Cars & Parts, and Cruisin’ Style
Magazine.
In addition, the readers of Kentucky Living Magazine (who are also
members of electric cooperatives
across the state) have named Somernites Cruise the “Best of Kentucky” in
2012 and 2013 for Family Outing and
Best in 2014 and 2015 for Car Show
Cruise-in.
Keith Floyd has been with the car
show since its inception and serves as
the secretary/treasurer for this year, although he has served in every position.
Floyd says the 15th year of the event
should be the best one yet!
“As in the past, each month is
open to all show cars, but we do have
a specialty area where we highlight different makes of automobiles. April is
our ‘Orphans Round-Up’ where we
feature auto manufacturers that have
gone out of business, like Pontiac,
Plymouth, etc. May is ‘Mopar Mania’
and will also be our 100th Somernites
Cruise. We will have special guests David “The Mayberry Deputy” Browning,
who depicts Barney Fife, and Butch
Patrick, who starred as Eddie Munster. Patrick will also be bringing the
Munster mobiles. June is the ‘Camaro/
Firebird Showdown’ and hope to have
a replica of the Smokey and the Bandit
semi-truck and Trans Am. July will be
‘Corvette Summer’ and is the month
we have set aside to celebrate our 15th
anniversary. We have scheduled a Hap-

py Days reunion and have Henry ‘The
Fonz’ Winkler, Anson ‘Potsie’ Williams,
and Donny ‘Ralph Malph’ Most committed to attend. August is ‘Mustang
Alley.’ We are planning to have our first
annual Somernites Cruise Coker Tire
Challenge, which is a timed road rally
event. September will be the ‘10th Annual Power Cruise’ sponsored by Holley
where cars meet at several different cities (Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville,
and others) and travel together to arrive
at Somernites Cruise. In September, we
have also scheduled American Graffiti’s
Paul (Milner) LeMat and Mackenzie
(Carol) Phillips. We finish up the season in October with ‘Tri-5 Chevys and
Pre-’66 Hot Rods.’ It is at this show that
we will award our raffle prizes—a 20-ft
enclosed trailer from Gator Made Trailers and a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner,
sponsored by Don Marshall Chrysler.”
Somernites Cruise president Brink
Denney says if someone has not ever attended a Somernites Cruise, this would
be the year to start.
“You have to see it to believe it!
Hundreds of vehicles lining the streets
of downtown Somerset—many rare and
unique vehicles. It’s also unbelievable
the thousands of people that line Highway 27 to watch the cars cruise after the
show on Saturday night. There truly is
something for everybody, and we have a
great lineup of events, like the Walmart/
Somerset Mall Block Party on Friday
night before the cruise, and celebrities
each month. We are excited that we are
going to be able to offer so much for the
thousands of people that we expect to
attend this year.”
Denney adds that more information on the cruise can be found on
the Somernites Cruise Web site www.
somernitescruise.org.

istracted driving kills
thousands of people each
year. Distracted driving,
according to the Web site
DISTRACTION.GOV, is
“any activity that could divert a person’s
attention away from the primary task of
driving.”
Distractions include:
• Texting
• Using a cell phone
• Eating or drinking
• Talking to passengers
• Grooming
• Reading, including maps
• Using a navigation system
• Watching a video
• Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3
player
Statistics says that 10 percent
of drivers under 20 involved in fatal
crashes were reported as distracted at
the time of the accident, and drivers in
their 20s make up about 27 percent of
the distracted drivers in fatal crashes,
according to the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
South Kentucky RECC and the
NHTSA urge everyone to visit Web
site DISTRACTION.GOV to take the
pledge to drive phone-free.
SKRECC also urges you to talk
to your young drivers about distracted
driving and the consequences. Explain
that it won’t be “LOL” (text abbreviation for laugh out loud) if they lose their
lives or take someone else’s because of
distracted driving!
