The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park T he Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park is famous for its large monkey collection, but the zoo is much more than just monkeys. The requirement to house 50 monkeys was mandated by Joseph E. Prentice in the original grant deed to the City of Santa Ana. While much of zoo showcases these incredibly energetic and entertaining creatures, people may not know that the zoo is home to 89 different species of animals. These range from common animals like domestic chickens to the highly endangered and secretive Margay Cat. The zoo’s latest addition is the two-humped Bactrian Camel. Camels come in many shapes and sizes. Some camels have two humps, some have one hump and some have no humps at all. The most common camels are the one-humped Dromedary (or Arabian) Camels from the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa. Recently the zoo housed Dromedary Camels on loan from the company that gave rides on the weekends. The zoo also is home to one of the wild no-humped camels of South America, the Guanaco. Looking very much like a Llama, the Guanaco ranges from the Patagonian deserts of Argentina to the high Andes Mountains. The Zoo’s Guanacos live ZLWKWKHODUJHÁLJKWOHVV5KHDELUGVLQWKH7LHUUDGHODV3DPSDVH[KLELWQH[W to the Giant Anteaters. They can best be seen by riding the Zoofari Express train. Our new Bactrian camel is named Kashi. She is two-years old and came from the Albuquerque Zoo in New Mexico. Kashi is on display in the center of the Zoo in the exhibit that previously housed our Dromedary Camels. It is located just north of the walk-through Colors of the Amazon Aviary. The impressive shade structure in her exhibit is an award winning Eagle Scout 6HUYLFH3URMHFW7KH=RRKDVEHQHÀWWHGIURPVHYHQ(DJOH6FRXWSURMHFWV over the last two years and four additional projects are in the works. The distinguishing feature of our newest camel is her two humps. Many people think that the camel’s humps are used to store water but they are really fat reserves for times when food is scarce. The humps will grow plumpHULIWKH\ÀQGHQRXJKSODQWPDWHULDOWRHDWWRVWDUWVWRULQJIDW&DPHOVGR drink water if it is available, drinking up to 40 gallons at one time. There are fewer than a thousand living in the wild and are considered an endangered species. The Zoo’s camel is a domesticated version of this wild camel. To survive the cold winters of the Asian desert, Bactrian Camels develop a thick wool coat which is shed during the warmer months. Some wool is kept during the summer as insulation from the extremely hot weather of the Asian deserts. The camel has extra-large feet with split toes for walking across the sand. Thick, long eyelashes provide protection when the sand blows. Currently there is one camel in the exhibit but the Zoo is looking to bring in a young male this year to provide her with a companion. Come visit her and the other 370 animals that call the Santa Ana Zoo home.
