Our PTO helps by paying for the recycle bin that is stored at the back of our school. An amazing amount of paper is recycled! Thanks to all of you for your efforts in supporting our school community and to our Green Team and their supervisors, Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Nelson. Common Core State Standards – This year, teachers at Badger Mountain are learning more about the Common Core State Standards. These standards provide a clear and consistent understanding of what students are expected to learn, so that teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. They apply to students across our state and nation. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities, regions, states and country are best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. There are English Language Arts (ELA) standards and Math standards on which teachers are receiving training at our monthly professional development meetings. For example, last week they participated in a workshop on identifying which vocabulary words kids know and can use, and which words need to be taught. At the beginning of the year and again in coming weeks, we will be working with district trainers to fully understand the standards and the instructional implications present in teaching to these new Common Core State Standards. By 2014-15 they will be fully implemented in the Richland School District and student achievement will be measured by a new state assessment system. Badger Mountain students and teachers will be ready! Other special activities – Students in grades 2 – 5 will be assessed on the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) this month. This assessment is for both reading and math. Your teacher will inform you the dates of your child’s test. We also have our 2nd Grade Chinese New Year parade, 5th Grade Science Fair, Sock Hop, 1st Grade Patriotic Program, and all-school Talent Show to look forward this month and into the next. A variety of great activities are taking place at Badger Mountain School! Happy February, Gail Ledbetter Principal PAGE 3 VOLUME 34, ISSUE 5 BOBCAT TALES BOBCAT WORD OF THE MONTH Students who were nominated for the January word of the month, Kindess: Arianna Gutierrez Kelly Borsch Leila Seely Riley Leidel Pepik Matyas Carter West Baylen Arlt Anika Halappanavara Melissa Falcon Delanie Palm Jasmine Santos Halie Quintana Julian Montoya Taylor Newton Tori Perez Lucas McCoy Audrey Robinson Bryce Wilson Teleri Bastow Bailee Jansons Levi Miller Natalie Hsu Lolah Sharifova Carley Mills Nick Rask Elora Markland Carlos Manzo Jacob Tedder Isabel Pena Nathan Seholm Ali Ferritto Maya Rowe Ashlynn Alderman Mason Leavitt Karma Sherpa-Gregory Avery Ly Aidan Leon Shae Brightman Jackson Rice Hailey Schow Nancy Suarez Ben Higbee Sadie Dabling Grace Pedersen Ethen Maxwell Evelyn Davis Xander Homan Sydney Nguyen Lucas Story Ty Martin Frankie Van Winkle Connor Overson Amelia Varljen Hallie Allenbaugh Haley Anderson Lauren Ratcliffe Lucy Jo Lerma Vixie Martinez Ashley Tonthat Emily Erickson Alyssa Hammer Mason McDermott Camryn Reynolds Ty Frigaard Blake Riste Portia Harker Deston Singh BOBCAT TALES PAGE 4 VOLUME 34, ISSUE 5 Voter’s Pamphlet Information February 12, 2013 Richland School District The Richland School Board is placing a $98 million construction bond issue before voters on February 12. 1. The bond issue addresses nine specific facility improvement projects: * Replace Lewis & Clark Elementary School which is 42 years old * Replace Marcus Whitman Elementary School which is 42 years old * Replace Sacajawea Elementary School which is 42 years old * Build a new elementary school in the south/west area where housing growth is taking place * Build a new middle school in the south/west area where housing growth is taking place * Provide educational space for HomeLink at a site to be determined * Retain Jefferson Elementary as a K-5 school; remove the 1953 wing and provide adequate space to serve the current K-5 enrollment * Replace the HVAC system at Chief Joseph Middle School * Make safety improvements at Fran Rish Stadium 2. The estimated total cost of these projects is $130 million. The District expects to receive $32 million in state assistance funds which means that $98 million must come from local taxpayers. 3. Construction projects qualify for state assistance funds. Doing constant band-aid type repairs do not qualify for state assistance funds. 2003 Projects Completed on Time and Under Budget The Richland School District has been a good steward of local tax dollars. It has been 10 years since the Richland School Board last presented a construction bond issue to improve and update facilities for our students. The year was 2003 when voters said yes to renovating Richland High School and Hanford High School, replacing Jason Lee Elementary School, and building a new middle school (Enterprise) and a new elementary school (White Bluffs). “The 2003 bond was a milestone event that will positively impact students and families for decades to come,” says Rick Jansons, School Board President. “The good news for local taxpayers is that those projects were completed on time and under budget. We will do the same with these 2013 projects.” VOLUME 34, ISSUE 5 BOBCAT TALES PAGE 5 Bond Issue Financial Information * The Richland School District’s 2012 bond tax rate is $1.21 per $1000 of assessed valuation. If voters approve the bond issue, the estimated tax rate will increase 34 cents to $1.55 in 2014. * Yearly property taxes would increase $34 on a $100,000 home, or just under $3 a month (see tax rate table below). * These new bonds will be retired in 15 years in the year 2029. * Possible Exemptions Senior citizens and disabled persons with household incomes of $35,000 or less may qualify for an exemption from levies and bonds. Call the county assessor at 736-3088 for more information. The current bonds which paid for Richland High School, Hanford High School, Jason Lee Elementary School, Enterprise Middle School, and White Bluffs Elementary School will be paid off in 2022. 34 Cent Increase Over 2012 Projected RSD Bond Tax Rate Residence Value $ 100,000 Annual Cost 0.34 per $1,000 $ 34 Monthly Cost $ 2.83 Year $ 150,000 $ 51 $ 4.25 $ 200,000 $ 68 $ 5.66 $ 250,000 $ 85 $ 7.08 $ 300,000 $102 $ 8.50 by shed publi unity s i t e m l amph a co m r ter’s P District as uestions o o V 2 Q 1 l . o y a r o e r a h Febru ichland Sc ns of the a sent to: the R ce to citize ents can be l 967-6000 l servi comm .edu or ca d s r @ info (per $1000 of assessed valuation) 2012 Current Bonds $1.21 2013 $ 2014 $ 2015 $ 2017 $ 2018 $ 2020 $ 2022 $ 2023 $ 2025 $ 2027 $ 2029 $ New Bonds $0.00 1.18 $ 1.12 $ 1.06 $ 0.98 $ 0.97 $ 0.89 $ 0.51 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ Total Bond Tax Rate $1.21 0.00 $ 1.18 0.43 $ 0.49 $ 0.57 $ 0.58 $ 0.66 $ 1.04 $ 1.19 $ 1.19 $ 1.19 $ 1.19 $ 1.55 1.55 1.55 1.55 1.55 1.55 1.19 1.19 1.19 1.19 “We’ve studied these projects and analyzed potential costs for months and received excellent input from the community.
