Collier County BCC WELLNEWS APRIL 2016 Boundaries: Our Invisible Compass What is a boundary? What does it look like? What is its purpose? These are some of the questions that we discuss when working with children, but in reality these are questions for all of us to examine in our daily lives. In the Emotional Wellness program, one of the structural goals that we work on is boundaries. Boundaries in our work, boundaries in our family and boundaries in our relationships. So, what is a boundary? A boundary can be a visible or invisible structure, limitation or value that separates one from the other. Most of the time in counseling we are dealing with the invisible boundaries that manage our compass of duties, responsibilities, morals, ethics and values. This becomes important in all of our lives as boundaries allow us to separate what is in our control and within our boundary and what is not. When we work with children, we often explain that a boundary is like a fence around our yard. This boundary is what keeps our items in our yard and keeps the possible mess and responsibilities of our neighbors in their yards. Some of the items within our yard are of our choosing and some are not, but all items within our boundary/yard are within our control to change, adapt and manage. This seems simplistic in terms of the responsibilities of children, but at times can become confusing for the complex lives of adults. Establishing, maintaining and asserting our boundaries is what allows us to maintain balance and healthy relationships. If we constantly allow someone to violate our boundaries, and we begin to take on responsibilities that should belong to them, we begin to deplete our ability to maintain balance and emotional wellness. Boundaries, no matter how visible or invisible are important to our daily compass of our lives. There are times that stress, trauma or chaos affords us the ability to take on or assist with others responsibilities, but it is dually important that when that time has passed, those responsibilities return to balance within the boundaries. When our responsibilities remain in a state of imbalance we find ourselves, depleted, burnt out, exhausted, resentful, fatigued and overwhelmed. When these feelings arise we must take an inventory of our emotional wellness, examine our boundaries and take real action steps to return balance to our life. She did so well that she won a “Balance Ball Chair” for losing the most weight. She did not know that she would receive a prize for Caption describing picture or graphic. losing weight but was ecstatic when we awarded her prize and said: “I’ve never won anything before!”. Lauren Baptista, MSN, ARNP, FNP-BC Lauren is the new Nurse Practitioner in The MedCenter clinic at Risk Management, and she is so excited to be part of the team and work toward keeping our county employees healthy and happy. She grew up in Naples and graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing from Florida Gulf Coast University. Prior to that she was an RN and traveled all over the country as a travel nurse. She is trained in family and internal medicine and is passionate about preventing health problems before they start. In her spare time, she enjoys golf, karaoke, and spending time with her husband, stepsons, and Peekapoo dog, named Chewy. She is excited to meet all of you, so make sure to stop in to say hi!
