A Word from the Director
This is a very exciting time for the Flamenco Fire company.
After many years plying our trade throughout Queensland, we
have spread our wings (or more accurately, loaded the Tarago’s!?)
and hit the road for the ultimate flamenco road trip. 3 months,
39 concerts, 34 venues...... over 19,000 kilometres!!
This epic undertaking, a first for any flamenco group in Australia
(domestic or otherwise we are proud to say) is the product of a
monumental amount of planning, patience and preoccupation by
a cast of thousands...almost literally!
Given the nature of the performing arts, the behind-the-scenes
workers, managers, supporters, funders and ‘friendly advice
givers’ whilst being integral to every performance, rarely receive
the acknowledgment commensurate to their efforts. Please join
this very grateful Director in a rowdy round of internal applause
for a few outstanding of these many....namely, Angie Dunbavan
from Red Chair; Jane Atkins, Suzan Williams, Sarah Ferguson
etc (i.e. almost everyone!!) at the Queensland Arts Council; Chris
Bowen from Arts Queensland; John Kotzas, Jenny Hodgson and
crew from QPAC; and the creative team of Sue Rider, Andrew
Meadows, James Muller, Christopher Smith, Sonja Gerdsen and
Dave Hay, all of whom have contributed over the months/years to
make this show look, sound, and flow as it does.
Needless to say, but impossible to resist, this is the finest lineup of artists yet to appear under the Flamenco fire banner. With
Tomas Arroquero and Olayo Jimenez from Spain, along with a
stellar collection of Australian artists, Sol de Otono promises to
set the flamenco-bar very high.
Lastly and most sadly I’d like to acknowledge the passing
of Flamenco Fire’s first and dearest supporter, my friend
Arkie Tsamuras. The sole sponsor of the first Flamenco Fire
performance in 1999 at Brisbane’s Tivoli Theatre, Arkie’s love
of life and enthusiasm for the arts was as infectious as it was
irrepressible. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
Andrew Veivers – Director.

About
flamenco fire
Since 1999 Flamenco Fire has been thrilling audiences with a heady mix of traditional and
contemporary flamenco music, dance and song. A collaboration of nine of Australia’s finest
flamenco artists, Flamenco Fire features singers, dancers and musicians in a beautifully crafted
show that reveals the flamenco artform in all of its guises.
Initially offering performances that saw Brisbane based group - Jaleos Flamenco - share the
stage with a rich variety of national and international flamenco artists, Flamenco Fire soon
evolved into a single entity of like minded flamenco artists from South Australia, Victoria, New
South Wales, and Queensland. With all of the artists contributing original composition and
choreography, together they have achieved something unique in this country - a meeting
between artists of Spanish and Non Spanish background developing a new and innovative
performance vocabulary that is creative, dynamic, and has an appeal to both national and
international audiences.
Dazzling Footwork...Compelling Rhythms...Stirring
Songs...Flamenco Fire evokes the exotic roots of the
sensual and mesmerising art form that is Flamenco.
About
Sol de Otoño
Sol de Otoño, Flamenco Fire’s newest production, is an echo of the Autumn fiestas in Spain.
A time of the wine harvest. A celebration of Passion, Light, Culture, and Tradition. Flamenco
Fire’s Sol de Otoño will transport you to España.....Ole!
Building on the ongoing creative goal of striving for an innovative, original voice within the
flamenco idiom, the core ensemble of Flamenco Fire were delighted when the opportunity
arose to enrich this process through collaboration with Tomas Arroquero and Olayo Jimenez.
Both based in Spain and deeply immersed in the Flamenco life and culture, Tomas and Olayo
bring the tradition and passion of Flamenco dance and song to this production of Flamenco
Fire’s Sol de Otono.
A long way from the tourist bars of Madrid, flamenco is fast becoming a truly international art
form, and like it’s stable mate Ballet, Flamenco regularly graces the major concert halls and
theatre’s around the world. This border leaping, class defying art form not only represents the
universality of musical communication, it embraces both insider and newcomer alike to it’s
bossom and gives a voice to all ‘n sundry to cry aloud a passionate OLÉ.
Cante
Olayo Jimenez
Olayo Jimenez was born in Northern Spain into a Gypsy family of flamenco
singers, dancers and basket (canasteros) makers. His Grandmother –
“La Milia” - was a flamenco singer and friend of the great Carmen Amaya, with
whom she shared the stage when together they made their début in Barcelona.
Complimenting an upbringing surrounded by flamenco, Olayo immersed
himself in the serious study of the flamenco art form. Focusing on Madrid and
Seville, two great centres of flamenco, Olayo studied intensively at “Amor de
Dios” (Madrid) and Foundation Cristina Heeren (Seville) with highly respected
singers such as Naranjito de Triana and Jose de la Tomasa.
For many years Olayo’s highly personal vocal style and deep understanding of
flamenco have combined to ensure that his talents are constantly in demand.
Of his many appearances throughout Europe some of his highlights include:
The Royal Albert Hall (London), The Conservatorium of Music (Rotterdam,
Holland), performances on Dutch television, film score and acting appearances
(“El Punto Sobre la I”), and many other performances in prestigious concert
halls in Holland, Denmark, and the United Kingdom.
Olayo is currently based in Barcelona and has joined the cast of Flamenco Fire
especially for the 2008 season of Sol de Otoño.
James Paul
Based in Sydney, James Paul is a singer and multi-instrumentalist with broad
experience in world music. James has toured as a solo act, with world-fusion
group Jai, and with a number of other groups including The Rhythm Hunters
and Hot Caravan. His flamenco performances include productions with The
Flamenco Crew and Ana Otero. James is passionate about world music and
his studies range from Indian classical music (under sarod master Ashok
Roy) to Flamenco (in Spain, under Rafa Habichuela). James brings all of this
experience to his singing of flamenco “canté” and in playing cajon (flamenco
percussion). James joined the cast of Flamenco Fire in 2006.
Dance
Tomas Arroquero
Tomas Arroquero began his flamenco dance career in 1991 and left Australia
for Madrid in 1995 to study at ‘Amor de Dios’ (Madrid). His most important
teachers in this period were Maria Magdalena, Belen Fernandez and Manuel
Reyes. On an extended visit to Australia in 1999, Tomas performed and
taught nationwide. Returning to Madrid , he performed with Clara Ramona´s
company and worked with various Madrid based artists, including a series of
performances at the prestigious tablao - Casa Patas. In 2002, Tomas moved
to Jerez, to focus on flamenco within its traditional form. His main mentor has
been Maria Bermudez.
Currently using Jerez as his base, Tomas has performed regularly with the
London-based company, ‘Flamenco Express’, touring extensively in the
United Kingdom. He teaches workshops throughout Europe, and has taught
for longer periods as a guest teacher in both Germany and Taiwan. Tomas’
performance highlights have included the Laben Centre (Europe’s foremost
contemporary dance centre), and sharing the stage at the Royal Albert Hall
with flamenco great – Tomatito. Tomas first joined the cast of Flamenco Fire
in 2006.
Areti Boyaci
Areti Boyaci began her dancing career in classical ballet with Ballet Master
– Rex Reed. Her move to flamenco was inspired by Carlos Saura’s Bodas
de Sangre and for the last 15 years Areti has been studying, performing and
teaching flamenco dance. She frequently travels to Spain for professional
development, working intensively on technique, style and choreography
at the prestigious dance academy Amor De Dios. While in Madrid, Areti trains
with dance maestros including Belen Fernandez, La China, Ciro,
La Truco, Rafaela Carrasco and Manolo Marin. Now recognized as one of
Australia’s finest flamenco dancers, Areti’s performance highlights include
Sueno (Odeon Theatre), Ausdance Spectacular (Adelaide Festival Centre),
Encuentro (Lion Arts Theatre), Viva Flamenco (Nexus) and Womadelaide.
Areti joined the cast of Flamenco Fire in 2004.
Simone Pope
Guided by some of Spain’s finest dancers - including Belen Fernandez,
La China, Carmela Greco and Ciro – Simone Pope’s contemporary
choreographies transfix the audience with their energy and passion. Founding
member of Brisbane based groups Jaleos Flamenco and The Saruzu Quartet
(formerly SARS), Simone has performed at major festivals, theatre’s and
concert halls from Tokyo to Adelaide, and almost everywhere in between.
Simone annually returns to Spain to immerse herself in the technical and artistic
directions of Flamenco. Simone also directs the Brisbane Flamenco Studio
where she teaches and hosts workshops by visiting national and international
flamenco professionals. Simone has choreographed and performed in all
previous productions of Flamenco Fire.
Guitar
Werner Neumann
Werner Neumann studied classical guitar with John Della Torre before his
passion for flamenco guitar was developed under the instruction of Robbie
Varga and Manolo Jaen. Consolidating his flamenco guitar studies, Werner
studied in Madrid with Jesus Heredia, accompanied Belen Fernandez’s
classes at Amor de Dios and studied with Enrique Bermudez (Ballet Nacional
de Espana). Based in Adelaide, Werner has performed at numerous festivals
and music events including Womadelaide, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Barossa
Festival and Victor Harbour Festival. Werner has worked with some of
Australia’s most prominent flamenco performers including Robbie Varga, Elena
Maya, Tomas Arroquero and Elena Varga and is the principal guitarist for Areti
Boyaci. Werner joined the cast of Flamenco Fire in 2004.
Kieren Ray
For the past 15 years, Kieren Ray has performed professionally as a soloist
and in numerous ensembles playing Flamenco, Classical and Jazz guitar.
He has performed extensively throughout Australia at major festivals and
venues including: Melbourne and Brisbane Concert Halls, Frankston Guitar
Festival, Melbourne Festival and Adelaide’s Playhouse Theatre. Since 1994,
Kieren has collaborated with renowned dancer Nella Randone, inspiring a
substantial collection of Flamenco Dance Theatre productions featuring original
choreographies and compositions. Musical excerpts from their production –
Tryptich – have been featured in the film Memory Tree – The Controversial Art
of David Boyd, which was screened on ABC television. Kieren currently works
with Melbourne group Sonikete, as well as his own group ContraBanda which
performs original works and contemporary masterpieces. Kieren joined the
cast of Flamenco Fire in 2002.
Andrew Veivers
From the beginning, Andrew Veivers has combined the traditional study of
flamenco with the formal training of the classical guitar. After graduating with
a Bachelor of Music in 1993 from the University of Queensland, Andrew spent
3 years studying, teaching and performing in London, Madrid and Amsterdam.
At venues ranging from Blenhiem Palace (U.K.) to chamber music series
in Amsterdam to performances throughout Japan to concerts at many of
Australia’s leading festivals, Andrew has appeared as a soloist as well as with
his various groups – The Saruzu Quartet (formerly SARS), Jaleos Flamenco
and Estilo Flamenco - to critical acclaim. With over 15 years professional
experience, and performance success throughout Australia and Europe,
Andrew draws on a wide range of musical influences, evoking the sensual and
mesmerising sounds of the Spanish guitar in all of its guises. Andrew is the
creator of Flamenco Fire and has provided musical direction for the production
since its inception in 1999.
Double Bass
Andrew Shaw
Andrew Shaw is an in-demand bassist who tours nationally and internationally,
has performed in many of the leading venues and festivals and recorded
extensively. Andrew has played with top performers in a diverse range of
fields, including jazz, free improvisation, cabaret, flamenco, tango, world music
styles, classical, new music and in an actual field. Although Andrew plays a
lot of jazz and is passionate about it, he doesn’t describe himself solely as a
jazz musician – his aim is to find out what the double bass can do. Andrew
has worked with such high profile artists as Trevor Hart, Jim Kelly, Jeff Usher,
Mark Sholtez, Lyndon Terracini, Dale Barlow, Elena Kats-Chernin, Scott
Tinkler, Rhonda Birchmore, Katie Noonan and The Queensland Philharmonic
Orchestra. Andrew joined the cast of Flamenco Fire in 2000.
