Westchester County firm overcomes challenges to build
world-class golf course in the Bronx

With New York Botanical Garden, Yankee
Stadium and a top-rated zoo, the Bronx already
has numerous iconic destinations for visitors
and residents alike. Soon, the borough will add
another. Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point is
scheduled to open in the Fall of 2014. When it
does, the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, which
will be operated by the Trump organization as
concessionaire, will immediately be recognized as
one of the top public courses in the nation. It may
become home to a PGA tour event or possibly
host a PGA Championship or U.S. Open. But the
property’s journey from undesirable to worldclass golf course was not an easy one.

In the 1950s, Ferry Point, which sits on the East
River where the Whitestone Bridge connects
Queens to the Bronx, was a landfill. Though
closed in 1962, it remained an illegal dumping
ground and eyesore for much of the next four
decades. In 1998, former NYC Mayor Rudolph
Giuliani proposed building a golf course on
the property to beautify the land. Since it was
once a landfill, the property could not be used
for residential, commercial or most industrial
purposes, but a golf course would be a way
to make good use of the land. The project was
awarded to a private developer, but years of
design and planning fell by the wayside when
he pulled out. However, in 2008, Mayor Michael
Bloomberg resurrected it as a city-financed
project.

About that same time, LAWS Construction Corp
of Pleasantville, N.Y., was building Ferry Point
Community Park. LAWS is a general contractor
that offers a wide range of services including
excavation/site work, underground utilities, roads,
bridges and retaining walls. So when the golf
course project next door to the community park
came up for bid, LAWS went after it and won the
contract for excavation, shaping, utilities, irrigation
and cart paths.
“We started work on the golf course in 2009,”
recalled LAWS CFO Steven Vescio. “It was
originally supposed to be a $54 million, two-year
project. Four years later, we’re almost finished with
our portion, which will probably end up at about
$115 million. The additional cost had little to do
with change orders or anything we could control.
The project was wrought with numerous delays
and changes due to the environmental conditions
caused from working on a former landfill,
addressing the New York State Department
of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC)
requirements, the New York City Department of
Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) concerns
and significant design changes.”
For example, most projects allow reburial of
material, but at Ferry Point, LAWS was required
to take out, haul offsite and dispose of more than
180,000 tons of municipal solid waste. Other
unforeseen conditions and added requirements
impacted the schedule and costs, such as additional
pond liners, added demarcation geo-fabric and
additional drainage. Significant “re-shaping” of
the contours was required to accommodate golf
design criteria and drainage requirements and at
the same time maintaining the quality of play that
Jack Nicklaus has visioned.
“Another huge cost overrun was a requirement
from the NYSDEC to line all the ponds and dig a
geofoam trench across the entire site,” said Vescio.
“Since we were bringing in several million yards
of material to properly cover the landfill, the

NYCDEP was concerned that it would be too
much weight on the existing sewer system. So
they had us dig down 30-35 feet to expose the box
culvert line, create some access manholes and fill
the trench back up with large styrofoam blocks
called geofoam. That trench added nearly $8
million to the cost of the project.”
Although it hasn’t been without issues and
critics, Vescio and NYC Parks and Rec Chief
Engineer John Natoli, P.E., who has kept a close
eye on the work, are proud of Ferry Point.
“For LAWS, this is the biggest job we’ve ever
done, and it’s first class,” added Vescio. “It will be
the only Jack Nicklaus Signature-designed course
in the country that’s open to the general public
– and it will be a thing of beauty. We’re very
pleased to have been a part of it.”
If anybody can do it, it’s
probably not a job for LAWS
Although LAWS Construction had never
done a golf course, other than a design-build of
a cart tunnel at Old Oaks Country Club, Ferry
Point was a project seemingly tailor-made for the
company.
“From the earthwork to irrigation to paving, it
encompassed a lot of services we would be able
to provide in-house,” said Vescio. “Beyond that,
it was going to be a challenge, and frankly, that’s
what my dad (LAWS President and co-owner
William Vescio) prefers. He prefers tricky, complex
projects over run-of-the-mill jobs that anybody
can do, which is what sets us apart from other site
development contractors. And make no mistake,
the Ferry Point golf course certainly had plenty of
challenges associated with it.”
To do jobs like Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point,
LAWS Construction (the name comes from the
first initials of William’s four children: Lynda, Amy,
Wendi and Steven) relied on longtime valued
employees. As many as 150 people worked on the
job during the busiest part of the schedule.
In addition to the Vescios, key personnel include
co-owner and Executive VP Giacomo “Jack”
Micciche, Mr. Outside to Vescio’s Mr. Inside; VP
and Chief Estimator Nick Toumanios; Project
Manager Errol Stabiner; and Superintendent Augie
DaSilva, Micciche’s right-hand-man at the golf
course. William Vescio’s sons-in-law Bob Cook and
Mike DiNolfo also work at LAWS.
“Two other men who were crucial to the golf
course project were John Natoli and Course
Architect Jim Lipe,” said Steven Vescio. “We
worked closely with both of them to get the job

“With the Community Park and a Waterfront
Park along with the golf course, this is a 200-acre
development,” noted Natoli. “Personally, I
think it’s one of the greatest inner-city parks
department projects ever. I’m very proud of our
involvement in taking a blighted area and turning
it into something beautiful and worthwhile for
our citizens.”

Larry McCrann are great at putting things like that
together with favorable terms that work for both of
us.
Komatsu and Ehrbar:
A winning combination
“That’s important to us,” he added. “We think
Komatsu equipment is great. It’s high quality,
reliable, and very productive. But it’s the customer
service that we get from Ehrbar that really keeps
us coming back. It’s horrible to have a problem
on a machine and have an unresponsive dealer.
We rarely have problems with our Komatsu
equipment, but if we do, Ehrbar is always there to
take care of us.”
Much of LAWS Construction’s equipment
fleet consists of Komatsu machines from
Edward Ehrbar, Inc. The company has
approximately 25 Komatsu pieces including
excavators ranging from a compact PC27 up to
a PC400, wheel loaders from a WA180 up to a
WA380, and two dozers (D39 and D51).
“We also rent and lease Komatsu units
from Ehrbar as needed,” said Steven Vescio.
“For example, generally speaking, we’re not
large-dozer users. On the golf course job,
however, we needed a number of dozers for
earthmoving, so we leased three from Ehrbar
to use in conjunction with the two we own.

In 1998, former NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani proposed building a golf course on the property
to beautify the land. The project was resurrected by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2008 as a
city-financed project. Next year, the 200-acre Jack Nicklaus-designed Trump Golf Links at Ferry
Point golf course will be open to the public.
When the golf course project was just getting
started, LAWS bought a Komatsu PC400 and a
Komatsu WA380 for the large earthmoving portion
of the job. Now, as it’s winding down, LAWS
purchased a short tail swing PC138 for irrigation
work and a Carlson paver to put down sub-base
and asphalt for the cart paths.
Problem solvers
LAWS Construction works throughout metro
New York City including Westchester, Putnam and
Duchess counties. With the golf course work nearly
complete, the company will be looking for its next
big job.
“We’re somewhat particular about the jobs
we go after,” said Steven Vescio. “We don’t bid
everything. It’s got to conform to our strengths and
abilities, and ideally be a job where our presence
will benefit the owner. It also has to be a job where
we’re going to turn a profit. If we’re not going to
make money, there’s no reason for us to be there. If
another contractor wants to work at a lower profit
margin or even a loss, that’s on them. We’ll just
move on to the next job.
“I think the future of our company is bright,” he
continued. “Dad and Jack founded LAWS just 13
years ago, but during that time, we’ve gained quite
a lot of expertise on a wide variety of work so we
have several different directions we can go. Dad
is 64, but I don’t expect he’ll be retiring anytime
soon. He loves what he does, and so does Jack.
Under their leadership, I believe we’ve earned a
reputation for being ‘problem-solvers,’ whereas
some companies can be ‘problem-creators.’
Any issue that arises, we try to work it out to
everybody’s advantage. As long as we continue
to do that, I’m confident we’ll have a place in this
industry.” Q

Making the old look new is commonplace
when it comes to construction and landscaping.
Doing the opposite takes a talent that few possess,
and Mark Steiert is one of the exceptions.
“Oftentimes, our clients want their new
landscaping to seem as though it’s always
been there, like it’s established rather than just
recently installed,” said Steiert, Founder and
Owner of Steiert Landscape Service. “I like
that challenge because it takes a great deal of
creativity and planning to make it happen. I
have to know the right plants, stone and other
products to pull it off. I guess I’ve developed a
knack for it over the years.”

Steiert has more than 30 years of experience
in the landscaping industry. After working for
another company for several years, he struck
out on his own in 1981. At the time, he started
with just a pickup truck.
“Everything I owned fit in that truck,”
recalled Steiert. “I almost exclusively focused
on lawn maintenance, basically cutting grass.
I supplemented that with snow removal in the
winter. I couldn’t afford a plow, so I shoveled
driveways. It was hard work, but I was
determined to persevere.”
The hard work, determination and
perseverance translated into success. Today, Glen
Cove, New York-based Steiert Landscape Service
is considered one of the premier landscaping
contractors in the Long Island area with a list of
services well beyond mowing and snow removal.
“We still do both,” said Steiert, who also
offers firewood for sale year-round and is a
certified pesticide applicator. “In addition, we do
complete lawn maintenance; site development;
tree planting, pruning, spraying and removal;
retaining walls; soil amendments and other
services. Most of our work is high-end residential
projects that involve a package of services.”
Collaborative design
The largest percentage of Steiert Landscape
Service’s projects are done from design
collaborations. “We primarily work for
architects who work with homeowners and
contractors to develop their ideas into plans,”
said Steiert. “We’ve built a good reputation
with both the architects and the general
contractors we work with. They appreciate
that we can blend the landscaping into the
design and basically handle everything
ourselves with very little subcontracting.
“They also recognize our attention to detail,
and know that we won’t cut corners,” he
added. “For example, if we believe additional
drainage is needed on a site, we address that up
front. I’d rather be honest with the client and
tell them they should spend more to have a job
done right the first time. It’s better than doing
inferior-quality work at a low cost that will likely
lead to problems later on and end up hitting
them harder in the wallet down the road.”
Steiert Landscape Service relies heavily on Komatsu wheel loaders. “Because of our Komatsu equipment, we are confident that we can come to work each day
and not be hindered by downtime,” said Owner Mark Steiert. “Most of the hours on our machines are put on our Komatsu WA150 and WA480 wheel loaders
because they’re great all-purpose machines.”
Steiert estimates the company usually has
three or four jobs going at any one time. Steiert
Landscape Service is currently working on a
large project in Old Westbury that highlights its
capabilities. The work involves reshaping the
existing terrain, excavation, drainage, grading,
planting new and moving some existing trees,
driveway and Bluestone hardscape.
Steiert completed a project in Oyster Bay that
involved bringing in about 3,500 yards of soil and
grading the yard. The company also installed
septic and drainage systems and a new driveway,
as well as planted trees.
“That was a particularly interesting project
because it was right on the coast, and we
had to get permits from the Department of
Environmental Conservation because the terrain
needed to be altered,” said Steiert. “A tidal
surge from Superstorm Sandy caused extensive
damage, so we raised the grade and amended
the soil to reestablish the lawn. It turned out
beautifully.”
Experienced staff
Steiert credits a staff of about 20 for the ability
to complete such projects on time and with the
utmost quality. His sister Jeanne Grella is Steiert
Landscape Service’s Office Manager, and his son
Mike recently came on-board full time. Other
key individuals include Head Foreman Benjamin
Garcia, Tree Crew Foreman Jose Portello-Cruz
and Francisco Garcia and Will Caliz who are in
charge of maintenance.
“Everyone contributes to the success of the
company, and much of the company’s growth
is a direct result of their efforts,” said Steiert.

PC160 moves a lot of dirt quickly,” said Orellana. “It has great power, so we
often use it for lifting boulders when we’re putting up retaining walls.”
“Experience plays a big role too. Some staff have
been here almost as long as me, so they know
what needs to be done, and they make it happen.
They understand our reputation is on the line

much of our success to the pride they take
in ensuring customer satisfaction. I believe I
have the best employees in the business, both
in the office and in the field.”
Confidence in Komatsu
As Steiert Landscape Service’s projects
have grown, so has the number and size of its
machinery fleet. Today, much of it is comprised
of Komatsu wheel loaders and excavators
and a D39EX-22 dozer purchased from
Edward Ehrbar, Inc. with the help of Sales
Representative Dan Stanton.
“Because of our Komatsu equipment, we
are confident that we can come to work each

very accommodating, such as
letting us demo a machine before
we rent or buy to ensure it’s the
right fit,” said Steiert “We have
longstanding relationships with
Dan and Ehrbar. This is why we
continue to buy and rent Komatsu
equipment from them.”
For grading, Steiert Landscape Service uses a Komatsu D39EX-22 dozer. “We do a lot of
fine grading on residential projects, and the D39 is the perfect size for that,” said Mike
Steiert (pictured).
Steiert. “Most of the hours on our machines

stockpiling materials, moving trees and logs and
other applications. I know landscapers typically
use skid steers, but we find the Komatsu loaders
to be a superior alternative. They have better
visibility and offer greater reach, so we can
get more done without moving the machine,
whereas you often have to reposition a skid steer.
Overall, they increase our productivity.”
For excavation, drainage work, digging tree
stumps and moving large boulders, Steiert
Landscape Service turns to its PC35MR-3 and
PC160LC-8 excavators. “The PC35 is ideal for
working up close to obstructions and shallower
digs, and the PC160 works well in heavier
applications such as boulder walls,” said Steiert.
“For their size, they’ll move a good amount of
dirt quickly, and the PC160 has plenty of power
to lift heavy rocks.”
The company services its Komatsu equipment
with parts from Edward Ehrbar, Inc. “Ehrbar
has been very accommodating, such as letting
us demo a machine before we rent or buy to
ensure it’s the right fit,” said Steiert, who has also
purchased Rogers and Felling trailers and JCB
products from Edward Ehrbar, Inc. “Their parts
availability is excellent. We have longstanding
relationships with Dan and Ehrbar. This is
why we continue to buy and rent Komatsu
equipment from them.”
Continued slow, steady growth
Steiert said the company is not done growing,
and he would like to see it evenutally double in
size.
“I believe it can be achieved, but not quickly,”
said Steiert. “I won’t jeopardize our ability to take
care of our customers just so we can grow. We’ve
built the business to this point through slow and
steady growth, and that will remain the model
going forward.
“Michael coming on board made me take a
more long-term view of the company,” he added.
“Hopefully, one day he can take the reigns and
continue building Steiert Landscape Service. I
truly believe that the sky’s the limit.” Q

to protect residents from super storms

When Hurricane Sandy arrived a little more
than a year ago, the Rockaway Peninsula was
among the hardest hit regions. Breezy Point sits
at the west end of the peninsula, and became
the face of the storm the night Sandy came
ashore. An electrical fire destroyed 135 houses,
and the storm surge itself severely damaged
an additional 220 houses to such an extent that
they too had to be demolished. In total, the
community of about 2,800 homes lost more than
10 percent of them in a single night.
“Today, there are 355 empty lots where
those houses once stood,” said Breezy
Point Cooperative General Manager Arthur
Lighthall. “But that’s not the entirety of it.
The whole peninsula was covered and every
residence sustained flood damage. For the
first couple of months after the storm, this was
quite literally a ghost town. Nobody could live
here. I wasn’t able to return to my home until
May — more than six months after Sandy hit.
“Some people think we’re a seasonal ‘beach
bungalow’ community where NYC residents
escape for vacation or on summer weekends,” he
added. “That might have been true at one time,
but today, more than 70 percent of our homes are
occupied year-round. So, for the most part, these
were not second homes that were destroyed –
they were families’ primary residences.”
The Breezy Point Cooperative, which is the
governing body of the community, is working
on a two-pronged effort to get the community
back to where it was pre-Sandy. They are
working with the City and State to get permits
to allow residents to rebuild homes, and they
are trying to better protect Breezy Point from
future Sandy-size storms.
Building a dune system
The protection plan centers on creating a
series of sand dunes on the ocean side of the
peninsula to help prevent storm surges from
overtaking the town.
“We have a permit allowing us to harvest
sand from our oceanfront beach and redeposit
it in areas most needing protection,” said
Lighthall. “We’re starting at Beach 201st Street
and working west for about 1,000 feet because
that area is totally unprotected. That will be the
first phase of the 10-year permit.”
“We had very limited time to do the
scraping/harvesting,” said Mike Flanigan,
General Foreman of Field Operations. “So our
initial goal was to get as much sand as possible
to the new dune location. After the sand was
moved, we could concentrate on the dune
shaping and planting the native grasses and
vegetation that go with a dune system.”
Breezy Point turned to Edward Ehrbar, Inc. for
equipment to move the sand. The community
rented a Komatsu WA480 wheel loader and two
Komatsu HM400 haul trucks to transport the
sand.

“The WA480 is great,” said Operator Jim
Hermance. “It only takes four buckets to fill
a 40-ton truck. It has plenty of power, and it’s
not bouncy. I’m very happy with it.”
“Ehrbar Sales Rep Steve Gambutti was great
to work with,” said Lighthall. “He worked
closely with our Director of Field Operations
Eddie Ammirati to help us determine the
optimum size of equipment for the job.”
When complete, the man-made dune will be
about nine feet higher than the existing grade.
It will be roughly 125 feet wide at the base,
sloping up to about 25 feet across at the top.
The meeting that never happened
Ironically, the Breezy Point Cooperative had
started looking at the idea of constructing a
sand-dune protection system prior to Sandy’s
arrival.
Hurricane Sandy produced storm surges and electrical fires that severely damaged 355 homes
in the Breezy Point Cooperative. All of those homes had to be demolished. “Today, there are
355 empty lots where those houses once stood,” said Lighthall. “We hope our actions now will
lessen, if not prevent, any future Sandy-size devastation.”
“We all know that when you’re dealing with
Mother Nature, you can’t control everything,”
Lighthall noted. “But we certainly hope the
actions we’re taking now, when complete, will
lessen, if not prevent, any future Sandy-size
devastation.” Q

“In August 2011, Hurricane Irene caused
some flooding in town, which prompted us
to think about constructing a dune system for
protection,” Lighthall recalled. “We scheduled
a town-hall meeting on November 5, 2012
to discuss the idea, but Sandy hit October
29th, the week before the meeting, so it never
happened.

Hard work leads to success for Stamford, Connecticut,
excavation, recycling contractors

Antonio Vitti Sr. founded A. Vitti Excavators
in 1966 with a vision that it would eventually
grow from a one-man company into a thriving
business, and that his son Tony would someday
take it over. Both came to be, and his vision laid
the foundation for what the company is today.
“I always believed that if I worked hard, it
would pay off,” said Vitti. “I had a lot of days
where I worked from five in the morning to
seven at night, sometimes seven days a week. I
did whatever it took to make the business work.”
“He instilled that same work ethic in me from
a very young age,” said Tony. “I worked every
day after school and on the weekends. By the

Demolition materials are often recycled by a
division of the company, A. Vitti Recycling. It

“About 75 percent of our work is in the
municipal sector within about a 50-mile
radius of Stamford,” said Tony. “The rest of
our work comes from projects we do for select
builders and developers that we work with on

However, the road to growing the company,
which now has about 40 employees and a long
service list, didn’t come easily for the elder Vitti,
who immigrated from Italy to Stamford, Conn.,
in the mid 1950s. Vitti had worked construction
jobs in his home country, and after working for
someone else in Connecticut for a few years, he
decided to go it alone.

the business. That was about 20 years ago, and I
believe we had around 10 employees.”

is self-performed. We sub very little. On
the recycling end, we have more than
400 customers who turn to us for several
products.”
Occasionally, the two divisions work
together. Currently they are working on the
Harbor Point Development project where
the companies are doing the excavation and
remediation. The project started nearly four
years ago, and Tony expects it to last another
four to five years.
Talented, experienced staff
Tony Vitti noted that A. Vitti Excavators
usually has 12 to 15 projects in progress at
any given time. Some are part of a contract
with the town of Greenwich and the city of
Stamford for sidewalks and bridges. “We
probably replace or build eight to 10 new
sidewalks, which is about 5,000 to 7,000 linear
feet, and two to three bridges per year. We
also do three or four mass excavation projects
as well as several other miscellaneous jobs.

Included in its fleet are PC600, PC308 and PC78
excavators, a WA380 wheel loader and a D20P-6A
dozer.
“In our business, production is essential,” said
Tony. “The Komatsu excavators are powerful
and provide us good productivity, both in mass
excavation and recycling. The WA380 is a good
all-purpose loader, and it moves a sizeable
amount of material quickly and efficiently.”
The Vittis have a longstanding relationship
with Edward Ehrbar, Inc. “We go back more
than 20 years,” said Tony. “We turn to them for
all our servicing. Our Sales Rep Andy Jett and
everyone at Ehrbar are great and take care of any
need we have. We consider them partners in our
business.”
Looking ahead to the
next generation
Tony Vitti hopes to pass on the values Antonio
taught him to his young son, Antonio III. He
said the two-year-old already is showing a keen
interest in construction.
“He doesn’t watch cartoons, he watches
machines,” said Tony. “Like my dad, I love what I
do, and maybe my son will share that same trait.
I fully expect the business to be here for him if he
wants it.”
“I’m proud of the way Tony took the reins
and ran with the business,” said Antonio. “He
understood right from the start that this is not a
9-to-5 business, and that customer satisfaction
is key to longevity. I believe A. Vitti is one of the
oldest contractors in Stamford, and, if that’s true,
I hope it’s a record that will continue to be broken
each year for a long time to come.” Q

Wirtgen products offer proven productivity,
reliability to Connecticut paving company
A
A&J Construction continues to evolve, even
as it approaches 35 years in business. Three
years ago, the Brookfield, Conn.-based paving
company added milling and reclamation to
its list of services. Concrete flatwork, such as
curbing and sidewalk construction, is offered
now as well.
Diversification is a key component of A&J
Construction’s continued growth, according
to its management team, which includes
Owners Ray Boa and Al Augusto and Director
of Operations Louis Augusto. “Milling and
flatwork increased our opportunities, making
us a more valuable resource for our customers,”
said Louis Augusto. “It benefits all of us. In fact,
during the down economy, we grew.”
Approximately 75 percent of A&J
Construction’s work is in the public sector,
primarily as a subcontractor. The company
typically works within an hour’s drive of
Brookfield, with multiple projects handled
by a staff of nearly 60. The company recently
completed one of its largest projects to
date, milling and paving about five miles
of Interstate 25 in Connecticut, between
Bridgeport and Monroe.
During about a three-month period, A&J
milled more than 200,000 square yards of
asphalt pavement and installed about 40,000
tons of Super Pave hot mix on the shoulders
and roadway, including 24 bridges. “The
bridges’ decks are concrete, so careful milling
was essential to minimize damage,” said Boa.
“That was a challenge considering the existing
asphalt was at various depths, from four to
eight inches. It was also time sensitive, and a
good portion of the mainline road work had to
be done at night.”
A&J Construction removed the asphalt
with its Wirtgen milling machines, including a
dual-engine W 210 for full-depth removal. “It’s
our workhorse, and now has about 2,800 hours,”
said Louis Augusto, noting it was part of the
company’s initial purchase of milling equipment,
along with a W 50 DC. “We’ve done nothing to
it other than routine maintenance and changing
bits as needed. Recently, we began using our
15-mm drum more often, and that’s increased
fuel efficiency and reduced bit wear, so our
operating costs are down.”
For compaction during subgrade prep and
paving, A&J Construction used Hamm HD 090V
and HD 120 rollers. “The Connecticut DOT has
stringent specifications for density on the mat
and joints, and again the bridges presented a
challenge because compacting with traditional
up and down vibrating blows on the concrete
deck wasn’t an option,” said Louis Augusto. “The
Hamm rollers use oscillation, so they actually
rattle or shake the mix into place. The pavement
passed with flying colors.”

Successful service
A&J Construction milled a similar amount of
material during a project on Interstate 84, removing
the asphalt median, ramps and shoulders of
a three-mile stretch near Manchester. Widths
varied from full width bridge decks and ramps to
between four feet and 20 feet maximum widths.
Larger widths were milled with the Wirtgen W 210
milling machine, and the company simultaneously
performed four-foot mills with a W 120 it added to
its fleet of milling equipment a couple of years ago.
“Because it’s a four-foot mill, the W 120 was
perfect,” said Louis Augusto. “We mainly use
it on smaller projects, such as trench milling
and parking lots where the four-foot machine
is able to mill greater areas in tight spaces that
the larger mill would not be able to reach, such
as islands and other structures. For really close
work, like around manholes and water gates,
we use the 20-inch W 50 DC.”

Components of the integrated intelligent
Machine Control system include robust
stroke-sensing hydraulic cylinders and a
chassis-mounted enhanced inertial measuring
unit, as well as the cab-mounted antenna
and in-cab control box. Designing the GPS
components into the machine improves
durability, and the cab-top antenna provides
accurate surface data by measuring actual
elevations as the dozer continuously tracks
during operation. The system measures
progress in real time.
Seamless mode switches
The intelligent Machine Control D61i-23
dozers provide automatic blade control from
rough cut to final grading. Inside the cab, an
easy-to-use operator interface uses design files
and interacts with the dozer’s machine-system
controls, including blade control – the D61i
comes standard with a power-angle-tilt blade
– and tractive-effort management. As the dozer
approaches final grade, it automatically and
seamlessly switches from rough dozing to
finish grading.
“Typically, users rough cut to within a few
inches of final grade before turning on the
automatics of their machine control system to get
to final grade,” said Anetsberger. “That’s because
if the operator uses traditional machine control
in automatic during rough cut, the machine tries
to push or cut too much material, and, inevitably,
the tracks slip. That can reduce productivity, cause
unnecessary wear on the tracks, increase fuel usage
and increase overall owning and operating costs.
“We’re reducing or eliminating those issues
with the D61i,” he added. “During rough cut, if

Rugged design of new PC360LC-10 Waste Handler
provides maximum uptime in tough applications

Waste handling can be an extremely tough
application for equipment. Not only is waste
material highly varied and difficult to handle, it
produces a lot of airborne debris that can wreak
havoc on engines and other critical systems.
Komatsu designed its new PC360LC-10 Waste
Handler to stand up to both types of challenges.
“Anyone who works in transfer stations,
demolition, scrap handling and recycling centers
knows how severe these applications can be,”
said Kurt Moncini, Product Manager, Excavators.
“Komatsu built the PC360LC-10 Waste Handler
with these conditions in mind and came up with
a package that helps minimize the impact of these
unique environments. We reduced associated
downtime and kept the focus where it should be:
the work at hand.”
Komatsu engineered the PC360LC-10 Waste
Handler with a severe-duty revolving frame
undercover that has thicker steel for greater
protection of internal components. Operators
are also well protected from falling debris
with standard cab-top guarding. Additional
falling-object protection and front window guards
are also available.
The heavy-duty boom and arm are made
with high-tensile strength steel and have large
cross-sectional areas and one-piece castings in the
boom foot and boom and arm tips. The design
provides excellent strength and durability.
Debris accumulation reduced
Several features reduce debris accumulation
and improve airflow, allowing the operator to
focus on the job instead of the temperature gauge.
Improvements include a high-capacity Sy-Klone ®
engine precleaner, remote-mounted A/C
condenser, engine door and hood corrugated
screening package, auto reversing fan and
radiator clean-out covers to keep air flowing
through the coolers and make cleaning easier.
Engine and hydraulic-compartment gap seals
prevent debris from entering the radiator-cooling
air stream. A wide core cooling package with wide
fin spacing keeps air flowing through the radiator,
hydraulic oil and charge air coolers. The standard
auto reversing fan changes air flow direction to
clean screens and coolers on a regular interval.
“Operators can adjust the interval to match
conditions, and they can manually reverse the fan
at any time with the flip of a conveniently-located
switch on the right-hand console,” said Moncini.
“Six working modes allow operators to match
machine performance to the application, which
offers high production in tougher tasks and
greater fuel efficiency in less strenuous situations,
so users get dual benefits.” Q

For many construction companies, the winter
months are a time to take stock of and make critical
repairs to equipment in order to ensure it’s ready
for the next season. Among those critical repairs
are major items such as hydraulic or drive train
overhauls and engine rebuilds, which are designed
to bring machines back to like-new performance.
Although repairs can be costly, delaying those
repairs can lead to unexpected downtime and
higher lost-time costs. Komatsu recognizes this,
so it is participating in and supporting distributor
incentives for major machine repairs using new
and Komatsu Reman parts. Additionally, Komastu
recognizes that it can be difficult to pay in-full
for the needed repairs, so they are also providing
attractive financing for qualified customers,
including zero-percent financing for 12 months
and no payments for 90 days through Komatsu
Financial.
“We understand that there are a variety of
reasons for putting off needed repairs, but
doing so could put you at risk for significant
downtime when a machine is most needed,” said
Glenn Schindelar, Senior Marketing Manager.
“Komatsu is committed to finding solutions to
help ensure those larger repairs get done now so
that our customers’ machines are running at peak

Schindelar cited examples, such as a sand and
gravel company that was having a difficult time
affording the upkeep of its machines during the
economic downturn. The company fixed what it
could, but a more comprehensive solution was
required. Using the local distributor’s incentive

through Komatsu Financial, the company was able
to put one machine back into proper working order.
Because the program worked so well, the company
decided to finance repairs on two additional
machines. This one customer, and many others like

This year marks Ed Powers’ 25th anniversary with Komatsu. He has
served as Vice President and General Manager, Construction Equipment
Division for the past five years, and in January 2012, he increased his
responsibilities to include General Manager, Northern Latin America
Division. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Construction
Equipment Sales, West Region Construction Equipment Manager, Director of
North America Sales Utility Division, Regional Manager of Rental Services,
Deputy Regional Sales Manager (NJ) and Finance Field Representative.
“I have witnessed our business evolve during the past 25 years. The level
of sophistication and how rapidly technology advances is mind-boggling.
This is the advantage Komatsu has over the competition – we are recognized
as an engineering leader. Most manufacturers have huge marketing
campaign budgets, whereas Komatsu prioritizes its budget into research

Ed and his wife, Berta, have been married for six years and have two
children, three-year-old Joselyne and eight-month-old Liam.

QUESTION: The initial push for Tier 4 Final
machines begins soon. Is Komatsu ready?
ANSWER: Most certainly. As government
emissions regulations mandate, we will be
introducing our Tier 4 Final products in 2014.
As of now, we haven’t announced which
models are included, but when you visit our
booth at ConExpo in March, you will see
our introductory-line machines. Komatsu’s
introduction of Tier 4 Interim machines proved to
be very successful, and we expect similar results
with our Tier 4 Final machines.
QUESTION: Why were the Tier 4 Interim
machines so successful?
ANSWER: Komatsu CARE was one of the
major factors in the success of our Tier 4 Interim
machines. Prior to their launch, we listened
to our customers’ concerns relating to this
new technology. Their primary concerns were
reliability and maintenance. Based on that, we
created Komatsu CARE – a complimentary
package for all our Tier 4 machines, which
provides factory-scheduled maintenance for
the first three years or 2,000 hours, whichever
comes first, and includes up to two Komatsu
Diesel Particulate Filter exchanges. In addition to
addressing the required government mandates
and supporting our customers’ Tier 4 Interim
concerns through Komatsu CARE, we also
improved the overall efficiency of our products,
especially when it came to fuel usage.
A good example of improved efficiencies
is our D61i-23 dozer, the next generation of
machine-control technology and the first
intelligent Machine Control (iMC) model in the
North American market. It provides automated
blade control from rough-cut to finish grading,
and it is setting a standard by changing the
traditional mast- and cable-aftermarket systems.
We plan to introduce more dozer-model
sizes in the months ahead, and we will have
an impressive display of our excavator line at
ConExpo.
QUESTION: What else is Komatsu doing to
make the customer experience better?
ANSWER: Today’s construction-equipment users
are much more knowledgeable when it comes to
owning and operating costs, and they are fully
literate in the world of instant communication.
Komatsu continues to elevate its telematics
capabilities by incorporating new technology, such
as KOMTRAX and our new mobile app, which
allows users to view real-time critical machine
information on their Apple or Android smart
phones or via tablet device. Komatsu customers
can also order parts online through eParts and
communicate with us via text and email. The next
generation of contract owners is here, and we are
running right along with them.
Komatsu strives to know its customers and
their specific needs, so we’ve made a commitment
to visit customers’ work sites and witness
first-hand their work flow. This gives us a true
understanding of their needs and helps build
long-lasting relationships. The Japanese refer to
this visualization process as gemba, and during
the past few years, Komatsu has aggressively
employed the gemba philosophy. I firmly believe
that this has contributed to our success today.
This customer-centric approach is very
important to Komatsu. The Tier 4 technology
is extremely complex and there is still a steep
learning curve for some of our customers.
Komatsu and its Distributors are working
together to help customers tackle that learning
curve more quickly, which is another advantage of
Komatsu CARE. During the program’s regularly
scheduled maintenance visits to customers’
jobsites, we have additional opportunities to share
KOMTRAX data, visualize their applications
and personally ensure that customers are entirely
satisfied. Komatsu is committed to being more
than just an equipment provider – we are a
one-stop-shop solution provider.
QUESTION: What market opportunities exist?
The rental market has always been a good
opportunity for growth. That’s even more
apparent now, as the Construction Equipment
(CE) market recovers from one of the worst
economic downturns since the Great Depression.
Komatsu introduced its new D61i-23 intelligent Machine Control dozers with integrated
grade-control technology that provides automated blade control from rough-cut to finish
grading. According to Komatsu’s Ed Powers, the machines have received rave reviews.
Komatsu met emissions regulations with its Tier 4 Interim machines, as well as improved
productivity and efficiency that resulted in lower owning and operating costs. Tier 4 Final
standards begin in earnest next year.
Typically the rental market has represented
approximately 20 percent of our entire CE
demand, but it’s currently at nearly 45 percent,
and we expect it to remain a dominant
segment of our business. Through our Rental
and ReMarketing Division, Komatsu and our
Distributors are ready to enhance and reinforce
our rental presence in the growing market.
QUESTION: You mentioned the CE Market
returning to pre-recession levels. How are
markets looking today?
ANSWER: During the past several years, the
CE market recovery has been fueled by the
commercial, infrastructure and rental segments,
with much of this growth resulting from increased
energy demand. We are very optimistic that as the
housing market continues to recover at a long-term
sustainable rate, the CE demand will also remain
solid, which will invigorate the overall economy. Q

In 1999 Komatsu formed its ReMarketing
Division to offer quality Distributor-Certified
used equipment. Since then, hundreds of
contractors throughout North America have
taken advantage of these lower-cost alternatives
to new equipment.
“We continue to see contractors turning to the
rental and used equipment market to augment
their fleet so they’re not tying up their capital
in new machines,” said Lee Haak, Director,
ReMarketing, which is now a part of Komatsu’s
Rental and ReMarketing Division. “Komatsu’s
aim is to offer customers the highest-quality used
machinery in the industry, and we’ve made a
concerted effort to expand our organization to
meet that goal. For instance, Komatsu employs
ReMarketing regional managers (see sidebar)

Those evaluators do more than just take a
cursory glance at a piece of used equipment
to determine its resale value. Each machine is
put through a thorough, 200-step evaluation
process that checks machines from stem to
stern. This process includes measuring items
such as the undercarriage on a bulldozer. Any
item not meeting Komatsu standards is clearly
identified.
“We strive for consistency in our evaluations
no matter who does it or where it’s done,”
said Haak. “That’s important for two reasons.
One, buyers know exactly what the condition
of the machine is and what’s been done to it,
as opposed to buying a machine at auction or
through another source. Two, if they buy from
outside their geographic region, they can trust in
the machine’s condition without investing time
and money to physically go look at it.”

Haak noted that ReMarketing customers have
a large variety of needs. “Some buyers want a
machine that’s had everything replaced, and
others want a fixer-upper that they can buy in
the fall and have their mechanics work on during
the winter. One contractor may want a used
excavator to start a new business, while another
is looking for a quality, older wheel loader to
park at a gravel pile where they occasionally
pull material. We can accommodate practically
any need because we have a vast network of
inventory available.”

Lee Haak has been with Komatsu for 33 years and Director of ReMarketing during the past seven
years. He’s overseen the ReMarketing division’s expansion throughout North America and recently

other manufacturer does it like we do,”
said Haak. “We’re flexible when it comes to
warranties. For example, someone may want
a 90-day warranty. Komatsu will do that. If a
customer wants a warranty, we’ll work with
them to purchase one for up to six years and

Stewart already had extensive experience
when he joined Ehrbar’s former Pelham, N.Y.,
facility in July, 1980. He previously worked
for JA Tractor & Equipment Corp. and the
Aluminum Company of Canada in his
homeland.
“He quickly gained recognition as a
superior component specialist in engines,
transmissions and hydraulics, always
showing exceptional pride in everything he
worked on,” said Executive Vice President
Matt Ahern. “Godfrey will surely be missed,
