A Word From the Board
Keep up on the latest Missouri Hereford news
items by visiting the MHA website:

Hereford Breeders,
Wow! This summer has certainly been
one for the records. Although this summer
was very hot and humid, this did not shy
people away from the shows this summer.
Missouri was well represented at the Junior National
Hereford Expo in Indianapolis, IN with around 60 head
of cattle and 25 exhibitors and their families. There were
80 head of Herefords exhibited at the Ozark Empire Fair
and 196 head at the Missouri State Fair. What a great
representation at all these events. As summer draws to
an end, the sale season kicks in and the demand for our
breed is stronger than it’s ever been.
The board met at the state fair and decided to sponsor
Hereford Influence feeder calf sales at the Miller County
Sales facility starting in November. Check this issue for
further details on upcoming sale dates.
The Opportunity Sale is just around the corner and
will be here before we know it. The Hereford weekend
will kick off on Saturday, December 4 with the annual
meeting and banquet followed by the Opportunity sale on
Sunday, December 5. Start making plans to be in Sedalia
for the Hereford weekend. We will have a block of rooms
at the Best Western State Fair Inn so call now before you
forget.
If you ever have a concern or need assistance with
anything, please do not hesitate to contact me or one of
the board members. We would be glad to help. Looking
forward to seeing everyone at sales this fall!
Sincerely,
Jimmie Butler

A Note from the Editor:
Hello, Hereford Breeders.
Here it is the middle of September already and the majority
of the shows are behind us. In spite of withering heat at both the
Ozark Empire and State Fairs, there were excellent Herefords
in all the shows this summer. The Junior National Hereford
Expo in Indianapolis had the cream of the young Herefords from
across the nation and it ranked as one of the largest shows ever
assembled by the JNHE. Many of the classes of both “Owned”
and “Bred and Owned” heifers were made up of animals born
within two days of each other. When they narrow the classes
down that far you can be sure there are a lot of animals to work
through.
It is now time to turn at least part of our attention to the
upcoming sale season. You will find several sale announcements
in this issue, among them the Star Lake fall sale, MSU- Journagan
Ranch sale, Grandview CMR sale, Reynolds Herefords sale,
the Show-Me Classic, DeanaJak sale and last but certainly not
least the Missouri Opportunity Sale. If you are looking to buy
there are certainly plenty of options. Speaking of the Missouri
Opportunity Sale and the Show-Me Classic, please be aware that
the November 1st issue of the Missouri Hereford News is your
best chance to advertise your consignment animals for these two
sales. Your material for an ad needs to be to the editor no later
than October 1st. If you are sending a print-ready ad you can
have until the 10th of October.
We have our usual array of features; Joe Rickabaugh is
bringing us up to date on concerns from the AHA; there are
roundups with photos from the summer shows; the junior page
has JNHE and PRIDE Convention summaries as well as the new
MJHA officers and the women’s page has new officers and some
new money raising projects to announce.
I would like to ask your help with one of my problems with
the Post Office. Now that I am having the envelopes bar coded,
they are telling me that some of the addresses that I have can
not be coded because they have been replaced by a new address
system. It does save a few cents if they can be coded and handled
electronically. If you know that you have a newer address than
the one I am using, could you please share it with me. The “route
and box number” addresses seem to be
most consistently kicked out. I would
appreciate any help you can give me
in my ongoing negotiations with the
Post Office.
I hope your summer has been
good even though the weather has been a little crazy, some places
lots of rain and other places really dry. Our one constant element
would have to be the heat. Its a shame we can’t bottle it and
save it for those biting cold days of winter. Remember not too
long ago we were worrying about keeping those late winter/early
spring babies warm so their ears wouldn’t freeze. I will look
forward to seeing a lot of you around the sale rings this fall.
Sue Hand
The Porch
A blonde teenage girl, wanting to earn some extra money for
the summer, decided to hire herself out as a ‘handy-woman’ and
started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighborhood.
She went to the front door of the first house, and asked the
owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do. ‘Well, I guess I could
use somebody to paint my porch,’ he said. ‘How much will you
charge me?’
Delighted, the girl quickly responded, ‘How about $50?’
The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she would need was in the garage. The man’s wife, hearing
the conversation said to her husband, ‘Does she realize that our
porch goes ALL the way around the house?’
He responded, ‘That’s a bit cynical, isn’t it?’ The wife replied, ‘You’re right. I guess I’m starting to believe all those
dumb blonde jokes.
Later that day, the blonde came to the door to collect her
money. ‘You’re finished already?’ the startled husband asked.
‘Yes, the blonde replied, and I even had paint left over, so I gave
it two coats.’
Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50.00
and handed it to her along with a ten dollar tip. ‘And by the
way,’ the blonde added, ‘it’s not a Porch, it’s a Lexus.’

A Word From Your Editor
I want to apologize and ask for your understanding
for the necessity for limiting the pictures from most of
the shows summarized in this issue to only champions. If
I had used all the pictures on winners who deserved to be
recognized we would have had a 40 page issue and that
would have broken the budget. Hopefully most of the
Reserve Champions received mention in the little wrap
up stories. We know who you are and offer our sincere
congratulations for a job well done.

Ozark Empire Fair Has “Hot” Hereford Show
A blazing sun shown down pushing the temperature close to 100 degrees as the Ozark Empire Fair’s Open
Hereford Show got underway at 1:00 pm on August 4th. With 75 head entered, it was a fine showing of animals and a
large crowd of viewers showed their appreciation for the quality and number. The show was judged by Tyler Atwood
of Stillwater, Oklahoma.
After the judge had reviewed all the classes, KJ 847P Breeze 984W owned by Joel Butler of Republic, Mo was
named Grand Champion Female and JM Lady Mandie owned by Jett Bowers of Republic, MO was awarded the
Reserve Champion ribbon. The Champion cow/calf pair was exhibited by Justin Hurst with L3 Keno Lace 531 ET
and her bull calf, H2 Kace of Gold.
In the bull classes the Grand Champion award went to Jonathan Bellis of Aurora, MO for his senior bull calf JDB
GHCC 122L Entourage W112L. Joel Butler’s spring yearling bull, BPH 3242 Woodford 063W was named Reserve
Champion.

Justin Hurst won with L3 Keno Lace 531 ET.
Jonathan Bellis swept the bull awards winning both the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons. JDB

From the AHA
discovered by the newcomers to the Hereford showring
is the disposition of the cattle.
One item really caught my attention as I made my
way through the Hereford tie stalls in Sedalia. One
breeder put the epd graph charts for all of his animals on
their stall cards. Show me another breed of cattle that
had the same information on their stall cards. You would
probably wear out a pair of shoes looking. It is great to
see this breed bring cattle to the showring with solid
numbers--Numbers that can work for both the seedstock
and commercial industry. It is also nice for the cattle to
retain some look for the showring as well and this was
witnessed at the Missouri State Fair.
Throughout late July and early August it was my
privilege to visit many herds in Missouri to select cattle
for the Missouri Opportunity sale slated for December
5. 2010. This sale returns to Sedalia and the offering
appears to be stronger this year. More attention was given
to cattle with a little more age. There will be more pairs
and bred females this year in the sale. Several breeders
opened the gate on the bred heifer pen and there will
be several front line females in this category. The pairs
will be stronger and more AI will be evident throughout
the offering. It is also gratifying to see several first time
consignors want to get involved. And they are getting
involved with some stout individuals and opportunities
for breeders across the nation. It will be fun to see the
offering in the sale catalog.
When this newsletter comes out we will be well into
the fall sale season. There will be many opportunities
between now and the end of the year to add to your
programs. You are encouraged to look at the offerings via
the Hereford World, sale catalogs, Hereford Marketplace
on the Internet and many other avenues. If you need a
sale catalog on a particular sale—call me and we will
get you one. If you are looking for a particular animal or
animals, if I can help in anyway, just let me know.
Signing off this time a couple of things need to be
said. Sue Hand does a wonderful job for the Missouri
Hereford breeders with this newsletter—support it.
This is a great promotional tool for your program and
Herefords in Missouri. Hope to see you this fall at
several Hereford events.
State Fair and Missouri
Opportunity Sale
By Joe Rickabaugh
The Missouri State Fair was one to witness this year.
When the final animal walked through the ring a total
of 196 Herefords made the showring journey during the
show. This is quite a number of animals from one breed
at any state fair. It was a good testament to the popularity
of Herefords in the Midwest. It is a pretty safe bet that if
this was not the largest breed show at the Missouri state
fair it would have ranked in the top two.
A couple of things come to mind thinking back on
the Missouri State Fair Hereford show. First was the
number of new breeders and first time exhibitors. This
shows a renewed interest in the breed. The crowd around
ringside was large for the entire show. Several breeders
from other breeds took time to witness one of the strong
state fair shows this year in Sedalia. The new breeders
who have brought their animals to the state fair in the
past few years are making their way to the top in several
classes. The bar on quality is being raised and this was
proven throughout the entire show.
Another very encouraging ingredient was the number
of junior exhibitors. Not only does this bode well for the
breed but the juniors bring a youthful excitement to this
breed. This was not only witnessed at the Missouri and
Iowa State fairs this year but I bet the average age of
the junior exhibitor at this year’s Junior National in Indy
was not much over 12 years of age. Exciting times are
ahead for this breed.
It is interesting in traveling to various shows, the
number of new families that have entered the Hereford
ranks because it is fun to show Herefords. A trait not
talked about enough in the cattle industry but one quickly

State Fair FFA Show
In the State Fair FFA Show on August 14th, KJ 847P Breeze 984W ET continued her winning ways by garnering
the Grand Champion ribbon for Joel Butler of Republic, MO. The Reserve Champion designation went to a young
heifer calf, JDB P098 Georgia X014 born January 29, 2010 and owned by Jon Bellis of Aurora, MO .
Brianne Abramovitz won the Cow/Calf Division with her cow MHF 4S Willa 814U and her bull calf.
The young entries were the big winners in the Bull Division. Jon Bellis won the Grand Champion ribbon with
JDB GHCC 122L Outlook W110, born September 27, 2009 and a winter bull calf, BPH 3242 Pendleton 463W born
November 12, 2009, owned by Joel Butler was named Reserve Champion.

State Fair 4-H Show
Judge Chris Paulson had 70 head of Herefords to sort through in the State Fair 4-H Show on August 14. When
he had finished his deliberations, he chose CPH Lauren 07U, owned by Julie Choate of Pleasant Hope, MO as the
Grand Champion female and 4B Pinky 903 owned by Britney Adam of Clinton Co, MO as Reserve Champion.
Justin Hurst of Nevada, MO won the Cow/Calf Division with K3 Keno Lace 531 ET and her bull calf. The
Reserve Champion Cow/Calf pair was JC Annie 5325 exhibited by Cammie Ward of Linn County, MO.
The Grand Champion bull was GPHF Mr. McDreamy 92R 917W shown by Jordann Gregory of Houstonia, MO
and Kody Agee was awarded the Reserve Champion ribbon for his bull Grandview CMR Mr. Dom 9118.
Three young ladies won the showmanship awards; Brooklyn Adam, Claire Ludwig and Julie Choate.

Two Missouri Juiniors Lead State FFA
Two outstanding members of the Missouri Junior Hereford Association are now in high positions in Missouri FFA. Jon Black of
Chillicothe, MO is the current FFA State President and Sarah Ray of Paris, MO is the Vice President for Area IV. Both of these
young people own their own herds of registered Hereford cattle and both have exhibited their cattle in various shows around the
state as well as the State Fair. Both Jon and Sarah have used their Hereford herds as their Supervised Agricultural Experience
Program (SAEP) that is an important part of FFA education and both of these juniors see continuing to build their Hereford herds as
an important part of their futures in whatever agricultural endeavors they may choose.

Junior National Hereford Expo
A large delegation of breeders, both young and old, and their
animals made their way to Indianapolis, Indiana early in July
to attend the 2010 Junior National Hereford Expo. The junior
participants spent the early part of the week of the 4th of July taking
part in 25 various contests and activities. The last part of the week
was taken up with the actual judging of the cattle. More than 650
kids and 1,161 animals participated in the many activities offered
by the JNHE.
The Missouri delegation was made up of 27 juniors and 50
to 55 head of cattle. Hadley Ewing, son of Richard and Susan
Ewing, of Fordland, MO, won Div. III Champion Horned Heifer
with BIG 2913 Xena 7X sired by CH Enuff Prophet 2913. Three
Missouri juniors had class winners. They were: Nicole Pohlmann,
Owensville, MO won class #94 with her June 2009 heifer, SW
4130 Millie 9611; Joel Butler, Republic, MO won class #123 with
his March 2009 heifer KJ 847P Breeze 984W ET and Cory Wood,
Maysville, MO won class #147 with his October 2008 heifer, BIG
533P Grace 25U.
Eric Groose, Eugene, MO showed his ability in the show
ring by placing sixth out of 182 contestants in the Intermediate
Showmanship competition. That is in the top half of the top 10%.
A really good showing on the national level.
The Hurst Family did very well in the scholarship competition.
Reba won a $750.00
Walter and Joe Lewis Memorial Scholarship as well as a Golden
Bull Achievement Award worth $1,875. Justin Hurst won the Fifth
Grade Prospect Award. The Missouri team in the Great American
Certified Hereford Beef Grill-off won third place.
The cattle judging staff at this JNHE was excellent. John
Rayfield of Texas A&M judged the Bred and Owned Heifers, Bred
and Owned Bulls and the Cow-Calf pairs. His work was thorough
and consistent. Cheryl Linthicum of Comfort, TX put in two long,
hard days judging the Owned Heifers. She was very concerned
with basic soundness of the animal as well as the more obvious
cosmetic qualities. Mark McCully of Wooster Ohio, judged the
steer show. He had to work his way through 133 steers and said
they were all good quality that would work well in the industry.
The Indiana State Fairgrounds provided an excellent venue for
the show and all the activities.
A note from Kathy
Hello Juniors,
I would like to take a minute and tell you about an
exciting opportunity available to all junior Hereford
members. This past August, four Missouri Junior
Hereford Association members attended the PRIDE
(Program Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel)
Convention in Boise, Idaho. The week started with a
pizza party and an introduction from the board along
with a junior mixer. The next few days were filled with
tours of Hereford operations including Shaw Cattle Co.,
Heritage Cattle Co., Split Butte Cattle Co., and Colyer
Herefords. While touring these operations, juniors were
able to learn, experience, and ask questions about all
aspects of each ranching operation. Also, one of the main
highlights of the trip was whitewater rafting. Members
also attended leadership and team-building workshops
conducted by the National Junior Hereford Board.
PRIDE Convention is held every other year and
changes locations each time it is held. I encourage all
junior members to attend. Traveling to new places,
viewing top Hereford operations around the country,
meeting new friends, networking with others, and
learning about the Hereford and beef cattle industries are
all reasons to attend this great event!!
One last note, don’t forget to take advantage of the
scholarship opportunities available through the MHA,
MJHA, Missouri Poll-ettes, Missouri Hereford Women,
and the National Junior Hereford Association. Good luck
to everyone with school and the fall showing season.
Hope to see everyone this fall at shows and sales.

Congratulations to Brianne Abramovitz
Brianne had a very successful year on the Club Calf circuit. She showed two heifers and a steer and they stood
either at the top or very close to the top of their classes in most of the Club Calf Shows she attended. The bull she
showed was named the Champion Hereford in many of the shows. They helped Brianne to be named top exhibitor
over all breeds on the Missouri Club Calf circuit for 2010.

Missouri Hereford Women
Good Day! Hereford families,
I am Susan Ewing and I’m your new Missouri Hereford Women President. Andrea Butler has graciously
accepted the Vice-President position along with Lisa Tribble as our Secretary/Treasurer. I was surprised with my
nomination but I’m very excited about serving this organization. My personal goal is to gain unity and compassion
among our families. In the barns this summer I saw a lot of, “lending a hand,” from our youth. I believe that is
where it begins and it is a outstanding sight to see. The memories created at the last two Junior Nationals were
unmeasurable for our family. I’m thrilled to be apart of this organization.
At the State Fair, we discussed fundraising. Carrie Waller mentioned we could raise money from recycling at
our events. We plan on gathering and selling our aluminum cans. Please consider donating to Missouri Hereford
Women if you recycle cans on your farm. This would help us collect funds throughout the year.
I look forward to seeing you at the American Royal and the Missouri Hereford Annual banquet and sale. If you
need to make contact with me you can at 417.753.2329, 417.830.9431 or at Betterwing@cs.com.
Missouri Poll-Ettes
The Missouri Poll-Ettes met and discussed Queen changes, young ladies interested in being the Missouri Polled
Hereford Queen or Jr. or Sr. Princess may ask for applications from Jennifer Gregory-Sneed, she also has scholarship applications available as well, all applications are due on October 30th.
Congratulations are in store for Katherine Lewis Bolch, she became Mrs. James Fuller on August 9, 2010.
Thank you to our Missouri Poll-Ettes for helping to serve at the Steak Fry, Barb Steiner, Barb Gregory, Susan
Ewing and Robin Bartholomew. For applications contact: Jennifer Gregory-Sneed, 18430 Houston Road, Houstonia, MO 65333 or 660-568-0581

No one believes seniors . . . everyone thinks they are senile.
An elderly couple was celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to
their old neighborhood after they retired. Holding hands, they walked back to their old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found
the old desk they’d shared, where Andy had carved “I love you, Sally .”
On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armored car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up and, not
sure what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money - fifty thousand dollars!
Andy said, “We’ve got to give it back.” Sally said, “Finders keepers.” She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic. The
next day, two police officers were canvassing the neighborhood looking for the money, and knocked on their door. “Pardon me, did either
of you find a bag that fell out of an armored car yesterday?” Sally said, “No”. Andy said, “She’s lying. She hid it up in the attic. Sally said,
“Don’t believe him, he’s getting senile” The agents turned to Andy and began to question him. One said: “Tell us the story from the beginning.” Andy said, “Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday ....” The first police officer turned to his partner and
said, “We’re outta here!”

State Fair Steer Show
The State Fair Steer Show was held Tuesday, August 17th.
This show is divided into three divisions, 4-H Show, FFA
Show and Carcass Steer show. These shows are especially
lucrative for the winners because, in addition to their regular
State Fair prize money, a group of about 25-26 Missouri
breeders contributed money for an additional prize fund to be
divided between the winners whose steers were born, bred and
raised in Missouri. This year the qualifying winners received
$500.00 each for Champion rank and $250.00 was awarded
for Reserve champion ranking. In the 4-H Show , Cammie
Ward of Linn Co. MO showed the Champion Steer that she
had raised on her family’s farm. The Reserve Champion steer
was shown by Jordann Gregory with a steer from her own
family farm.
Cammie Ward and her 4-H Show Chamption Steer.
In the FFA Show, the Champion steer was exhibited by
Brianne Abramovitz with an animal that she purchased from
Duvall Polled Herefords of Lockwood, Mo. The Reserve
Champion for purposes of the additional prize money was Tyler
Erickson of Maysville, MO with a steer from the Erickson’s
farm.
David Vest, of Pilot Grove, MO, showed the Reserve
Champion FFA Hereford steer but was not eligible for the
extra prize money because his animal was purchased out of
state.
In the carcass steer competition Victoria Warden showed
the Champion with a steer that she purchased from Butler
Polled Herefords of Republic, MO
At the end of the 4-H/FFA shows Brianne Abramovitz’
steer was also named the Over All State Fair Hereford
Champion Steer.

HEREFORD INFLUENCE FEEDER CALF SALES
HAVE BEEN SCHEDULED AT
Miller County Regional Stockyards
#4 Kent Road, P.O. Box 629, Eldon, MO
4 sales have been scheduled over the next year.
The dates are:
November 8, 2010
January 10, 2011
April 11, 2011
July 11, 2011
Sales begin at 10:00 a.m.
Plan now to have your feeder calves ready to take advantage of these sales.
It can mean extra dollars in your pocket! These sales will be held in
conjunction with the regularly scheduled “special” feeder calf sales
that Miller County Regional Stockyards already holds and will be promoted
as Hereford Influence sales.
Recommended but not required practices to prepare your calves for the Hereford Influence sale
are: They need to be weaned for 45 days, bunk broke, cut by knife and healed, dehorned,
2 rounds of vaccinations for IBR-BVD-PI3-BRSV, PASTEURELLA, HAEMOPHILUS-SOMNUS
AND BLACKLEG, and be treated for worms. Source and age verified calves would be preferred.
Once again these are recommended value added practices you may wish to perform.
