Died of wounds Saturday 26 October 1918.
Born & lived in Shillington. Enlisted in Bedford. Son of
David & Annie Ansell of Brookside, Shillington.
In 1911 he is listed as being the son of David & Annie
Mansell, of Shillington, aged 12, at school, born
Shillington.
No known grave. Commemorated on Etaples Military
Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Plot LXVII. Row L.

Killed in action 7 November 1914.
Born in Finchley, enlisted in Ampthill, resident
Whetstone, Middlesex.
In the 1911 census Harry Ansell was the nephew of
Sara Waller (a widow), aged 21, a Farm Labourer,
born Finchley, Middlesex, resident Shillington.
Went to the front 12 September 1914.

Died of wounds Saturday 21 May 1917.
Lived in Shillington. Enlisted in Ampthill.

Artillery.
Died of wounds Thursday 21 March 1918. Aged 37.
Born in Hitchin. Enlisted in London. Son of James
Denton of Marshall Cottages, Shillington. Husband of
Sarah A. Denton of Albert Street, Lidcombe, New
South Wales, Australia.
Served in the South African Campaign. Awarded the
Military Medal (M.M.).
In the 1891 census he is the son of James & Elizabeth
Denton, of Green End, Shillington, aged 9, Scholar,
born Shillington. His birth was registered in the
January to March Quarter 1882 in the Ampthill
Registration District.
No known grave. Commemorated on Poziers Memorial,

Private 3/7199, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
Killed in action Thursday 12 October 1916.
Born & lived in Shillington. Enlisted in Clifton.
In the 1911 census he was the son of Henry & Ann
Frundon, of Aspley End, Shillington, aged 17, a Farm
Labourer, born Shillington.

In 1911 he was the nephew of Charles Cole, he was
aged 22, a Grocer's Assistant, born and resident
Shillington.

Ingram, aged 13, Assisting in Boot Repairing, born
Shillington, resident Aspley End, Shillington.
Buried in Kemmel No. 1 French Cemetery, Heuvelland,

Olive Lavinia Jenkins of 58 Park Road, Hendon,
London.
In the 1911 census he is listed as the son of John &
Lily Jenkins, aged 21, a Farm Labourer, born &
resident in Shillington.

Jepps (a widower), aged 19, a Horse Man on Farm,
born and resident in Shillington.

Absalom & Eliza Larman, aged 16, a Farm Labourer,

Went to the Front 11 November 1914.

Listed in the 1911 census as Arthur Pearce, aged 16,
son of Emma Pearce (widow), a Domestic Groom,
born and resident Shillington. His birth is registered as
Frederick Arthur, April-June Quarter 1895, in the
Ampthill Registration District.

Killed in action Tuesday 22 May 1917. Aged 28.

Son of Mrs G. Pestell, of 11 St Mary’s Terrace,
Newtown, Huntingdon. Husband of Maud Pestell, of
Church Street, Shillington.
In the 1911 census he was aged 23, born
Godmanchester, Butler to Robert Lucas at the Manor
House, Shillington.
Buried in Tank Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Killed in action Sunday 25 April 1915 on the Gallipoli
Peninsula, Turkey. Aged 29.
Emigrated aged 28. Enlisted 29 August 1914.
Born in Shillington, Luton, Bedfordshire, England, the
son of Alfred and Susan Prutton, of Church Street,
Shillington. Butcher by trade. Educated at
Bedfordshire Council School. Resident Portland, New
South Wales.
In the 1911 census he was a boarder with Harriet
Dinch; aged 25, a Butcher, born Shillington, resident
16 Etna Road, Bury St Edmunds.

Cemetery, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Panel 19

RICHARDS John
Stoker 1st Class K/6842, HMS “Queen Mary” Royal
Navy.
Killed or died as a direct result of enemy action
Wednesday 31 May 1916 when his ship was hit twice
by the German battlecruiser Derfflinger during the
early part of the Battle of Jutland causing her
magazines to explode shortly afterwards, sinking the
ship. Aged 24.
Born 22 May 1892 in Holloway, London. Husband of
Beatrice Richards of Bury End, Shillington.
No known grave. Commemorated on Portsmouth
Naval Memorial, Hampshire. Panel 19.

Private 2223369, 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Died 6 October 1918.
Resident 533 Robson Street, Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada.
Next of kin was his father, Alfred Swain, of Pegsden
Common Farm, nr. Hitchin. Born 7 January 1891,
Hertford, England. Tile Layer by trade. Unmarried.
Passed fit 16 July 1817, enlisted 31 July 1917, at
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, aged 26. Height
5 feet 7 inches. girth 38 inches. complexion fair, eyes
gray, hair light brown, hearing normal. bision right eye
20/20, left eye 20/32; religion Church of England.
Buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, Pas de

Tingey, aged 21, worker on a Farm, born & resident in
Shillington; one of his siblings is William (Willie), see

Cowman, born Shillington, resident Crawley Green, Stopsley.

born Shillington, Bedfordshire.

Born in Standon, Bedford, enlisted Woolwich, kent, resident
Plaistow, Essex. In the 1911 census Frederick Cole was the
son of David & Eliza Cole, born Shillington, aged 27, a Farm
Labourer, resident Pegsdon, Shillington, Beds.
Buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece. Plot VI. Row H.

Shillington.
Buried in the South-West part of All Saints Churchyard,
Shillington.

Died Saturday 14 October 1944. Aged 31.
Husband of Anne Mabel Haynes of Shillington.

HAYNES

Private 5833288, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment.
Killed in action at Sengarrang during the fight for Singapore
26th January 1942. Aged 28.
Son of Richard & Rose Haynes, husband of Ada Kate Haynes
of Barton.
No known grave. Commemorated on Singapore Memorial,
Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. Column 59. See also

Extracts from local newspaper:
4th November 1943
Nearly two years have elapsed since Mrs. George Haines had any news of her husband in
Malaya. The Red Cross have written a very sympathetic letter, promising news immediately it
can be obtained.
26th March 1946
Barton Man’s Fate at Singapore
Mrs. Haynes of Barton, has received official notification that her husband, Private George
Haynes, was killed on January 26th 1942 at Sangjerang, Malaya. He had arrived in
Singapore on January 13th and was 28. Mrs. Haynes is left with a son aged five. Private
Haynes was a native of Shillington.
