Members, This October Tread Lightly! celebrates twenty years as a non-profit organization. For these twenty years, Tread Lightly! has been working to sustain the availability of our public and private lands by advocating an ethic of good stewardship to ensure responsible outdoor recreation endures as an American lifestyle. During my time with Tread Lightly! I’ve seen trails restored and bridges built, watched Lightfoot be-friend thousands of kids, and been filled with pride as we’ve distributed millions of educational materials to our volunteer Tread Trainers and outdoor enthusiasts across the country. Today, the problems associated with outdoor recreation, especially activities involving the use of motorized vehicles, have reached critical mass. Access and opportunities on public and private lands – which brings untold environmental, economic, social and physical value to our nation – are disappearing at an alarming rate. This is why, more than ever, we look to you to help share Tread Lightly!’s essential message. Tread Lightly! will be approaching this new era with a renewed determination as we make Tread Lightly! more accessible and relevant to today’s outdoor enthusiast. Important tools that we are working on to help you in your efforts include the Respected Access is Open Access campaign and our newest “Ride On” campaign that is featured in this newsletter. We will also be working in the coming months and years to make supporting our cause more appealing as we reach out to the millions of people who enjoy the outdoors but have yet to commit to the Tread Lightly! principles of traveling responsibly. I am honored to have been able to serve as Tread Lightly!’s executive director for the past 18 years and can’t thank our dedicated members enough for your support and stewardship efforts. Now, as I look forward to the future, I see opportunity and collaboration as we work together to create good stewards of recreation and the outdoors. Happy Trails, Lori McCullough Tread Lightly! Executive Director reation Do Your Part: Off Highway Vehicles: Utility Vs. Rec We often hear that some of the worst instances of off trail travel by motorized vehicles are not actually caused by motorized enthusiasts. Hunters scouting, retrieving game or accessing hunting areas sometimes don’t think normal motor vehicle rules apply to them. Sometimes campers, climbers, fishermen and other recreationists who use vehicles to reach more remote areas of the backcountry don’t have the driving skills to negotiate some of the more technical backcountry roads and trails—causing damage to the trail or forcing them off the designated route. Other times it maybe a backcountry skier using a snowmobile to access distant slopes for some turns 1 but doesn’t know regulations about snowmobiles in those areas. The reality is many of these people do not know the rules, regulations and etiquette that go hand and hand with off highway vehicle use on our lands or the consequences of their actions. Their vehicle is a means to an end. They are using a vehicle to reach their recreational activity—not necessarily realizing that driving a vehicle is considered by many as recreational adventure. So what can we do? Whether you drive a 4x4, ATV, dirt bike or snowmobile, we all need to be ambassadors of our sport. Each and every time we hit the trail be a model of good outdoor ethics. We also need to reach out to these other communities—hunters, anglers, skiers, climbers, campers, etc.—and teach them what responsible behavior looks like when using an off highway vehicle. Offer them options and opportunities to grow their driving skills with their vehicle. Invite them on a recreational ride so they can learn more about OHV recreation. Relate to them the consequences of their actions such as resource damage, loss of access to hunting, fishing, climbing or camping sites and the creation of conflict with other recreationsits. By doing your part to educate other users we can all have a better recreational future. Tread Lightly! and Forest Service Create New Campaign In an effort to remind outdoor recreationists to stay on designated routes, Tread Lightly! teamed up with the US Forest Service to create a new campaign reminding visitors to drive only on trails shown on a Motor Vehicle Use Map. The new RIDE ON campaign will be available as posters and public service announcements this fall.
