Wood Type:
Pine is a tough, strong, maintenance-free building material used in landscape
construction for its natural appearance and adaptability to a variety of architectural styles. It is
used in many outdoor applications such as, framing, paneling, corral poles, utility poles, and
railroad ties.
Cedar is known for its decay-resistance. The wood is used for purposes requiring resistance to
weather, such as roof shingles. Cedar wood also naturally repels insects. If you order the cedar
all wood in the order that would normally be pine will be changed to cedar i.e. ribs. Only a very
small supply of cedar is kept in our inventory. It may take an additional 4-6 weeks to get a cedar
palapa if we need to order more cedar. Please call for availability if you need your palapa
promptly.
Wood Treatment:
Treating lumber provides long-term resistance to organisms that cause deterioration. It extends
the productive life of lumber by five to ten times. Wood that is exposed to moisture or soil for
sustained periods of time will become weakened by various types of fungi, bacteria or insects.
Both the light and dark stains provide similar amounts of protection for the wood. Darker color
will protect wood better from UV rays. Custom colors available; to order online purchase the
dark and contact us right away to change the color. If you select to have the wood treated all the
wood will be treated.
Rib Options:
Our redwood ribs are 1 ½" wide x ¼" thick and weigh less than 1 pound each. Although they're
small in size the advantage is they resist decay. The redwood ribs come standard on all Palm
Palapas up to 14' in diameter. These pieces require that they be individually connected to the pine
frame unlike the pine ribs.
Our Pine ribs are custom made and help make the installation of a palapa easier. The redwood
ribs rest on top of each rafter, whereas the pine ribs are wedged between each rafter, helping to
space them correctly. The pine is 1" thick and is cut out of our round stock; this is done to match
the round rafter and main posts. Each piece is connected the adjacent piece using a webbing
material shown below. This upgrade seems to be a much sturdier option compared to the
redwood (1" thick vs. 1/4" thick)
Thatch Roof Options:
Each Palm Palapa comes with two layers of thatch as a standard option. Having multiple layers
of thatch helps the thatch to last longer, provides better shade and water protection as well as
enhancing the overall look.
Fire Retardant:
Each piece of thatch, front and back, is treated according to the manufacturers' specifications. A
Certificate of Fire Retardantcy will be issued, if requested. You may present to inspectors when
required. According to the lab testing data available the treated thatch archives a classified A
rating. Fire retardant adds a clear coating to the thatch, leaving the surface slightly more
reflective. If you add a 3rd layer of thatch roofing you can now add a 3rd layer of fire retardant.
Rope Kit:
We use twisted sisal rope for all of our rope accessories. Twisted sisal rope has proved it's
durability over many years by being the rope of choice for many outdoor and indoor
applications. Some of the benefits of using this rope are that it resists sunlight, is made of natural
fiber, and is biodegradable. The rope is 1/4" and is purely for aesthetic appeal. Rope kits comes
pre-cut but not pre-attached.
